On behalf of Carrom Canada, I welcome you all to our Canada Open April 2018. Whether you will be watching the games in person or online I am sure you are in for a treat. We have tremendous interest shown by players from India. Many have won state competitions, but their participation entirely depends on the approval of visas to Canada. Currently, 2 state-level players have succeeded in acquiring their visas. We also have a huge contingent from the USA competing too. USA players have always shown high standards in competitions. They have world-class players and I expect them to fare well in this event. I am excited that a fellow sportsman and our very popular Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti has accept-ed our invitation and will be there to encourage the players and promote this sport. The Mayor will be our honored guest at the Awards Ceremony. Along with the Mayor, Regional Councillor Nirmala

Armstrong, Councillor & Budget Chief Logan Kanapathi and CAO City of Markham Andy Taylor will also be attending the function. Edward Village (formerly Delta), will be the venue once again. Canada Open April 2018 Rules

T he tournament will be conducted on a league cum knock bases. A maximum number of 32 players will allowed to participate in A Division and similarly in B

division. The players will be divided into 8 groups Group A – Group H. After 3 rounds of league matches, all 4 players qualify for the knock out rounds. During the league matches NO 9th board will be played in case of draw. In case of a draw, both players will split the points. League matches will be played on a best of 25 points or 8 boards, with a time limit of 35 minutes. Last board buzzer will go off after 30 minutes. At the end of the league, players will be ranked within their groups based on the num-ber of games won, then score point difference and then total accumulative points. Based on the standings the round of 32 will be conducted as per draw grid displayed on page 11 of the brochure.

All Knock Out Rounds: All knock out rounds will be played on a best of 2 games format, adapting to the best of 25 points and 8 boards rules per game. After 2 games if the match ends 1 each then the score difference will determine the winner. If the score difference is tied then a 9th deciding board will be played, with a toss to determine which player will take the strike for the 9th board. The total time allocated for each match (2 games) will be 1.10. Buzzer will go of after 1.10 minutes. No break will be allowed between games, so as not to give undue time advantage to any player. To run the schedule efficiently, we request all players to strictly adhere to the timings listed on the schedule. Please note that the organizers reserve the right to reduce the timings of the games to bring the schedule onside if such delays occur. The organizers could also reduce the games from 2 to 1 or reduce the timings for the knock out rounds. Bearing this in mind, we request all players to please help in getting your fel-low colleagues/carrom players follow the schedule and not waste time, because indi-viduals wasting time effects the entire group.

No games will be played to finalize the standings. After the round of 32. The computer will finalize the standings for all eliminated play-ers from 17 to 32, comparing them with all other groups. The criteria will be, game won points, score difference and game points scored during the round of 32. Similarly, after the round of 16. The computer will finalize the standing from 8-16 using the same criteria mentioned in round of 32. Also, the 5th to 8th standing will be determined similarly. Due to overwhelming response in competitive entries for this competition, we will have a 3rd place match only for the Men’s A Division. Due to limited entries we will also have a 3rd place game for Men B Doubles.

Tournament Schedule We start the tournament on Saturday, at 8.00 am with the attendance of registered of

players. Please note that this year we will not accept walk in players. All players must register before the deadline 7th of April 2018. All entry fees must be paid 14 days from registering or 2 weeks before the tournament or else the offending player could lose his/her spot in the competition. No fees will be refunded. Boards will be available for practices the previous day after 5 pm until 11.00 pm. At 8.30 am, after the welcome, will be the introduction of the NEW INOVATIVE PAPERLESS SCORING SYSTEM our and commencement of the tournament with the league schedule for MEN. Players are requested to collect their tournament identifica-tion name tags, hardcopy of the E-Brochure and a Detailed Schedule. WOMEN singles will start on Sunday the 15th at 12.30, their attendance for registered begins at 12.00 pm. Team event will be held on the 14th of April at 7.30 pm. Currently on the basis of the entries received we will have 4 teams. However, this could change depending on the number of International entries received. This warm up competi-tion will have 7 players making up a team, with 3 singles and 2 dou-bles. It will be league event with the team winning the maximum number of matches, maximum number of games, and then the score difference determining the league positions. Suggested split is Team Canada, Team USA, Team International and Team Rest of Canada Open. Captains for each team and players will be noti-fied in due course.

Meals Complimentary lunches and dinners will be served as per the schedule to participants who participate in that day’s event ONLY. Menu is detailed in the E-Brochure and players who have dietary restrictions should make their own arrangement. To ca-ter to most of our players (Hindus and Muslims) only halal chicken will be served. We will also arrange pizzas as usual to provide additional meals for the players on all 3 days. Please read notes on page 17 to assist us to keep our event costs within our budget. Water station, tea, coffee, cookies will be available throughout the day. The hotel has snack and pop vending machines and have an excellent restaurant. There are lots of areas where one can relax.

P lease note that the complimentary meals offered are for players who have registered to play in a particular event i.e. if a player who has registered for doubles will only get his meals on the second day. For women, it’s the-2nd day dinner. Although the men singles are played on 2 days, players who

don’t play in doubles cannot avail the buffet on the 2nd day. Unfortunately, this is because we have to pay the hotel per head basis and these are not normal restaurant prices, they are pretty steep. Just in case, you have guests or family members accompanying you for the event, you could always avail the hotel’s in-house Tivoli Garden Restaurant services.
