Cat 3176 Engine. The innovative Cat3176 diesel engine delivers large-engineperformance from a compact enginedesign. The six-cylinder engine isturbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled. With high displacement and low ratedspeed, this engine provides excellentfuel economy and durability that cansignificantly reduce operating costs.

Variable Horsepower (VHP).Automatically increases horsepowerin higher gears when the machine canuse it. In lower gears where traction islimited, horsepower is limited, reducingwheel slip and conserving fuel.

Lugging Performance. High torqueoutput and torque rise makes the 3176very responsive. Its superior luggingcapability maintains consistent gradingspeeds without the need to downshift.

Fuel Efficiency. Caterpillar state-of-the-art electronically controlled, unit injection fuel system has highinjection pressure for complete fuelcombustion, efficient fuel use andreduced emissions. The dual-filtersystem reduces component wear.

Extended Engine Life. The large bore-stroke design and conservative powerrating minimize internal stresses andincrease component life. The lowengine speeds reduce engine wearand sound levels.

Hydraulic Demand Fan. The hydraulicdemand fan control automaticallyadjusts cooling fan speed accordingto engine cooling requirements. This system reduces demands onthe engine, putting more power to theground and improving fuel efficiency.

Improved Torque. Power curvescustomized for the 14H increase peaktorque for higher ground speeds andenhanced productivity. Rimpull hasbeen increased in all gears for greaterproductivity.

Emissions Compliant. The new 14Hhas reduced NOx, hydrocarbon, andparticulate emissions. The Cat 3176meets or exceeds all U.S. EPA Tier IIand EU Stage II emissions controlstandards worldwide.

Power Shift Transmission. Designedand built specifically for Cat motorgraders, the rugged transmissionprovides on-the-go, full-power shiftingas well as inching capability.

Direct Drive. Delivers superior fuelefficiency and “feel” of blade loads, material hardness and ground speed.

Gear Selection. Eight forward andreverse speeds offer a wide operatingrange for maximum flexibility. Fourgears below 11 km/h (6.8 mph) matchworking speed to job conditions formaximum productivity in earthmovingjobs. Gears five, six and seven areoptimal for efficient snow removaloperations. Gear 8 is designedfor roading.

Planetary design. Large-diameter clutchpacks and oil cooling help dissipate heat, resulting in extended transmission life.

Inching Pedal. Delivers precise controlof machine movements in any gear withlow pedal effort and excellent modulation, critical in close-quarter work or finishgrading. A new pedal design andlocation improves modulation andoperator comfort.

Dual Certified Air Tanks. Supply brakingcapacity to each side of the machine. This system ensures secondary brakingcapability in the event a failure occursin a single brake line. The dual airsystem also has a large reserve forstalled-engine braking.

Oil-Disc Brakes. Caterpillar multi-discbrakes have a large brake surface fordependable braking capability andextended life before rebuild.

Location. Brakes are located at eachtandem wheel to eliminate brakingloads on the power train and to reduceservicing time.

Brake Reliability. The completelysealed and adjustment-free brakesare oil-bathed, air-actuated andspring-released.

Page 6: 14H (i).pdf

Load Sensing Hydraulics. A loadsensing variable displacement pumpand the advanced proportional prioritypressure-compensating (PPPC, or“triple-PC”) hydraulic valves providesuperior implement control andenhanced machine performance andefficiency. Continuously matchinghydraulic flow and pressure to powerdemands creates less heat and reducespower consumption.

Implement Control Valves. PPPC valveshave different flow rates for the headand rod ends of the cylinder. This insuresconsistent extension and retractionproperties for each cylinder, andimproves operator ‘feel’ and systemresponse. All control valves use lockvalves to maintain blade settings.Line relief valves protect cylindersfrom excessive pressure.

Balanced Flow. Hydraulic flow isproportioned to ensure all implementsoperate simultaneously. If demandexceeds pump capacity, all cylinders arereduced by the same ratio. The result isimproved productivity in virtually anyapplication.

Blade Float. Blade float, incorporatedinto the blade lift control valves, allowsthe blade to move freely under its ownweight. By floating both cylinders, theblade can follow the contours of theroad when removing snow. Floatingonly one cylinder permits the toe of theblade to follow a hard surface while theoperator controls the slope with theother lift cylinder.

Independent Oil Supply. Large separatehydraulic oil supply prevents cross-contamination and provides proper oilcooling, which reduces heat build-upand extends component life.

Heavy Duty XT Hose. Caterpillar hosetechnology allows high pressures formaximum power and reduced downtime, and intelligent routing minimizesexposure to damage.

Optional Hydraulic Lockout.Mechanically locks all moldboard, machine, and attachment control leversduring machine roading. This preventsimplements from being accidentallyengaged when the motor grader istravelling down the road.

6

HydraulicsBalanced hydraulics deliver consistent, precise and responsive control.

Blade. The tall moldboard and largethroat clearance help move materialmore quickly and efficiently. Heat treatedmoldboard rails, tough-hardened cuttingedge and end bits, and large diameterbolts assure reliability and longerservice life.

Blade Positioning. The blade linkagedesign provides extensive moldboardpositioning, most beneficial inmid-range bank sloping and inditch cutting and cleaning.

Blade Angle. A long wheelbase allowsthe operator to obtain an aggressivemoldboard angle. This aggressive anglepermits material to roll more freelyalong the blade, which reduces powerrequirements. This is particularlyhelpful in handling very dry materials, cohesive soils, snow and ice.

Circle Construction. One-piece forgedcircle stands up to high stress loads.Raised wear surfaces prevent circleteeth wear against the drawbar. The 64uniformly spaced circle teeth are flamecut and heat induction hardened to resistwear, and the circle is secured to thedrawbar by six support shoes formaximum support.

Replaceable Wear Items. Tough, durable nylon composite wear insertsare located between the drawbar andcircle, and between the support shoesand circle. This sacrificial wear systemhelps keep components tight for finegrading and allows easy replacement. These inserts reduce rotational frictionresulting in extended component life.

Circle Drive Slip Clutch. This standardfeature protects the drawbar, circle andmoldboard components from shockloads when the blade encountersimmovable objects. It also reduces thepossibility of the grader making abruptdirectional changes in poor tractionconditions.

Drawbar Construction. The A-framedrawbar uses box-section design forhigh strength and optimum durability. The drawbar bottom face and the topsurface of the circle are machined toprovide accurate adjustment andprecise blading.

7

Drawbar, Circle, MoldboardEvery component is designed for maximum productivity and durability.

Integrated Bumper. The integratedbumper ties the rear frame together intoa cohesive unit, to handle the loadspossible with the new 3176 power train. This is especially important in ripping,or snow removal applications wheregraders are equipped with snow wingattachments.

Rear Frame. Rear frame has two box-sectioned channels integral with fullywelded differential case for a solidworking platform.

Front Frame. Continuous top and bottomplate construction provides consistencyand strength. The flanged box sectiondesign removes welds from high stressareas, improving reliability anddurability, and increasing resalevalues for the customer.

program.

Fuel Tank. The 110 gallon (416 L),ground level fuel tank allows longerwork shifts and reduces refuelingfrequency. An easily accessible fueltank sediment drain enables the operatorto remove sediment accumulation, reducing the risk of fuel system damage.

Extended Oil Change Interval. Operate afull 500 hours between engine oil andfilter changes, and 4000 hours betweenhydraulic oil changes. This reducesdowntime and operating expense.

XT Hose. Caterpillar’s XT hosetechnology allows high pressuresfor maximum power and reduceddowntime. Hoses are securely routedto minimize exposure to damage.

O-Ring Face Seals. Cat O-ring faceseals assure rock-solid connections thatmaintain pressure and reduce oil leaks.Intelligent hose routing minimizesexposure to damage, increasing hoselife and enhancing reliability.

Radiator Cleanout Access. Radiatorclean-out access gives the operator theability to clear away debris and othermaterials that build up around theradiator. This ensures that the radiatorfunctions properly keeping the enginecool and increasing component life.

9

ServiceabilityRe-engineered inspection and service points save time and expense.
