As the drilling rig bites deep into the ground, there is the problem of getting itschippings back up the shaft, there is also the danger that the shaft will unexpectedly reacha pocket of natural gas under high pressure and "blow" the well. The weight of drillingmud pumped into the shaft above the cutting head prevent a "blowout," because the mudis heavier than the drill cuttings.
Oil wells vary. Some have used as little as 10 tons of barite, others as high as2000 in the drilling. An arbitrary "norm" is 200 tons; and barite sells for $20 a tonbagged.
A locally-formed firm, the Magnet Cove Barium Corporation, first heededKimzey's advice and was the first to get into production in 1940 at Malvem, strip miningthe mineral from the deposit on the outer slope of what is believed to be an extinctvolcano crater. A few months later The Baroid Sales Division of National LeadCompany had its adjacent plant in production.
Together, the two plants--which keep some 400 men busy--produce an estimated80 per cent of all the drilling mud used in the U.S.
And what about that huge acreage of cutover timberland? Some 82,000 acres of itwas bought up by lnternational Paper Company of Camden; a few far-seeing businessmenheld on to their tracts.
Almost unnoticed, the pine seedlings began reaching for the sky again. By 1935,O.L. Payne had come in with a lumber mill which was successfully cutting 50,000 boardfeet a day from the second growl. International keeps its crews busy cutting and haulingpulpwood and, by advanced forestry methods, keeps the stand replenishing itself as fastas it is used.
An assortment of hardwood and construction timber mills in the county, buyingfrom managed timber tracts, cut an approximate $ 1,000,000 worth of timber each yearand are in business to stay.
The industrialization of the area gains momentum almost daily. Westinghouse isbuilding a huge bulb manufacturing plant on Lake Catherine; Reynolds Metals Companyhas added to the capacity of its Jones Mills plant; Arkansas Power and Light Company isdoubling its huge Lake Catherine steam generating plant; General Motors' Fabricastdivision is to soon start construction of a multi-million dollar plant to utilize in castingsmolten aluminum transported directly from the adjacent Jones Mills potlines.
Meanwhile the spindles at Intemational's textile plant keep whirling, the kilns atAcme's two plants and a third similar plant owned by Malvem Brick and Tile Company, stay hot, and the whine of the saws is almost never still.
Hot Spring i)ounty's second growth has made its people first generationindustrialists.
(Editor's Note: Many things have changed since this writing. The aluminum plant atJones Mill is gone; the International Shoe is gone; the Baroid plant and, of course, themine is gone; General Motors is gone, but we still have Acme Brick Added to that areseveral smaller industries scattered around the county - in the industrial parks at JonesMill and at Rockport, for example. And Rockport is growing by leaps and boundsbecause the Interstate is located there.)

1938 Photos in Malvem by the RailroadStephen R. Strauss
The photo which shows the Missouri Pacific depot is onpage 152 of the 1982 fJer/./age. Note the steam locomotivewatering standpipe and train order signal adjacent to thedepot. The photo looking south from the Main Streetcrossing toward the water tower was printed in the We/earjournal and Daily Record in \976. The newspapers'caption for the latter photo misidentified the stationplatform as a brick street along the tracks.
The St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern (merged intoMissouri Pacific in 1917) depot used to be just east of thefreicht house. It was tom down after the current depot, stillused by Amtrak, was built in 1917. There was a woodenwater tower on the south side of the track, before the steelone sho\m in the photos was built on the north side. Theold depot with covered platform, the freight house and thewooden water tower are in a photo on page 50 of Arhausasaf W/or* by Steven Hanley. The steel water tower wasremoved shortly after steam service ended in the 1950s.The freight house in the photo was removed about the sametime and the freight offices were moved into the passengerdepot. An open air space between the passenger ticketoffice and the Railway Express Agency shipping space wasfilled in to provide floor area for the freight office. Thecovered Rock Island passenger platform across the tracksfrom the current depot was removed shortly after WorldWar 11. The Hot Springs Railroad (Diamond Jo)roundhouse, later used by Rock Island. is also visible. It'son the National Register. The looking north photo showsseveral outside-braced wooden boxcars on the siding.USRA regulations prohibited wooden freight cars in Class Irailroad service after 1964. The last Missouri Pacificpassenger train to stop in Malvem ran in November I 968.Amtrak service to Malvem began in January 1976. RockIsland ceased operation in 1980.
