AS WE CONTINUE CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF producing theater in Los Angeles, we are thrilled to welcome playwright
Bess Wohl, and to welcome back director Trip Cullman, as they bring to
life a provocative new play, Barcelona. While the journey of the play’s two
characters is primarily personal, it delves into our global cultural divides
and shared fears. Bess has created two people sharing a relationship
fraught with assumptions and developed with a fragility that echoes the
uncertainty we all face. Her ability to draw us in to a small slice of life
to tell a story that contains universal truths is incredibly powerful and
further, makes for good drama.
A two-hander (a play with two actors) is always a tricky obstacle course
for the actors and the director. Charged with carrying the entirety of a
play, the volley is constant; Trip has helped to shape a back-and-forth
between strangers yearning to make sense of a world outside of their
control. As our allegiances shift between them, these two disparate and
also desperate characters trade secrets that forever change each other’s
lives. Trip has assembled a team of brilliant designers who, along with
compelling performances from Betty Gilpin and Carlos Leal, take us on a
surprising, funny, sexy, and even a little tipsy, journey to Barcelona.
As we move through 2016, we look forward to bringing you new plays by
some of today’s most exciting writers … beginning of course with this trip.
Enjoy the show!

ON PAGE ONE OF A PLAY, THE FIRST THING WE LEARN IS THE SETTING IN WHICH THE STORY TAKES PLACE.The towns, cities and countries in which these plots occur
represent anywhere on Earth, and sometimes beyond.
The interior rooms can be vast or cluttered, opulent or
humble, but are always specific and intentional. Before
a single line of dialogue is written, a playwright must
establish where his or her characters will live. So, in a
sense, the setting is the first “character” we meet and
serves to set the tone from the moment the lights come
up. The setting dictates, first for the writer, and then for
the audience, the very nature of the story that is about
to unfold. Consider John Patrick Shanley’s Outside
Mullingar, for instance. The Irish countryside is useful in
creating an overall ambiance, but the key element of the
setting is that two farms exist side by side with only a
small gate between them. This gate serves as a huge
bone of contention between these neighbors, and also
as the perfect metaphor for something so small having
the power to keep two people apart. Likewise, in Bess
Wohl’s Barcelona, the setting is telling in numerous
ways. The specificity of the setting roots us in a time
and place and provides clues to better understand the
play’s larger ideas. The title gives us a sense of where
we are going before we ever see the set. But more than
that, the story is contained in a soon-to-be demolished
apartment building located in the shadow of the Sagrada
Família, a Barcelona landmark and arguably one of the
most famous places of worship in the world.
A few facts about the Sagrada Família: Francisco
de Paula del Villar y Lozano was the first architect on
the cathedral. After laying the first stone in 1882 and
commencing construction, he was soon replaced by
the architect ultimately credited with the building’s
design, Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí’s vision brought together
traditions of Gothic and Byzantine cathedrals with
the almost whimsical Art Nouveau style flourishing
in Barcelona at the time. He continued work until his
sudden death in 1926, devoting 43 years to the creation
of the Sagrada Família.
133 years later, construction and renovation
continues on the Sagrada Família. This is a key factor
in this setting for this particular play. Each new spire

adds to the grandiosity set forth by Gaudí. Because
it remains in a perpetual state of development, there
is often scaffolding covering various parts of the
cathedral, to the point where tourists expect evidence
of construction when visiting this monumental building.
But nothing can dampen the effect of the building.
Reminiscent of castles dripped from sand, the spires
are as fragile-looking as they are iconic and with each
new addition, the Sagrada Família cements its place in
the architectural world as one of the most profound
and awe-inspiring religious monuments.
Even for those who haven’t visited the cathedral in
person, there are aspects to the building that are fairly
well-known. The Sagrada Família is unique and even
foreboding on the exterior. Its Byzantine architecture
separates it from most European churches, houses of
worship that are more traditionally designed. While the
Sagrada Família is breathtaking, much of its beauty is
contained within — stained-glass, intricate carvings,
color and light that Gaudí created to try to imitate
heaven itself, are housed within the strange spires.
While the seemingly incongruous outer shell has its
own beauty, the stories of the spires are perhaps even
more important than their aesthetic appearance. Each
of the 18 towers has special significance. In the middle
is the tower dedicated to Jesus Christ and around it
are four towers representing the Gospels — the books
containing the life and teachings of Jesus. The tower
above the apse, crowned by a star, represents his
mother the Virgin Mary, while the remaining 12 towers
represent the 12 apostles, witnesses to Christ’s words
and deeds.1
Neither character in this play is native to Barcelona
and they’ve arrived in this place under very different
and extreme circumstances. We are introduced to
two people we think we understand immediately, and
there are suggestions early on that they will meet
our stereotypical expectations. But this is a device
employed by Wohl to lure us in and, much like the
building that is present outside the window, there
is far more to these two strangers than the surface
would initially suggest. Much like the Sagrada Família
illuminates complexities about the play’s two characters,
as a building perpetually under construction it serves
as a perfect juxtaposition to the dilapidated building in
which the action of this play occurs. The apartment is
beyond repair, and has been condemned. The Sagrada
Família, on the other hand, is forever undergoing
growth, change and further beautification. But the
change requires constant attention, and more than 100
years of architects, craftsmen and builders contributing
to continued expansion and adornment. The Sagrada
Família requires great and constant care. Without it, it is
under threat of becoming, like its neighboring building,
something unworthy of saving.
While this idea of attention and revelation can be
applied to many plays, there is also an undertone
here of what has already been destroyed. For fear of
revealing too much of the plot, the most that can be
said on this is that there are already ruins in this play
before we enter into the story, both architectural and
emotional. The constant reminder of landmarks in
need of repair hangs heavy in the air as we uncover the
secrets of Wohl’s characters.
Each setting we discover at the beginning of a
play promises us a journey to somewhere outside of
our experience. In the plays at the Geffen this season
alone, we’ve seen London, England in the 60s, India in
the 1600s, modern day Killucan, Ireland and Barcelona,
Spain. There is always an important reason for the
writer selecting a particular time and place. In fact, all
dramatic literature is defined by the period in which it
is written and set. With this in mind, the discovery of
“where” is as important as the “who” and the “what.”
In this case, in the shadow of the Sagrada Família, in
the city of Barcelona, we experience a story in which
what is broken and in need of repair may in fact contain
great beauty and grace.

#SEXWITHSTRANGERS
Written by LAURA EASON Directed by KIMBERLY SENIOR
Featuring
When frustrated novelist Olivia meets fast-talking blogger Ethan — known more for his sexual prowess than his prose — she worries she will become just another chapter
in his little black book. Their funny and flirty union blurs the lines between rewrites, romance and royalties — proving you can’t judge a book by its author.

CRITICS’ PICK! “Suffused with warmth and humor.
Ruhl frothily whips together a romantic comedy and backstage farce.”
— The New York Times
Written by SARAH RUHL Directed by BART DeLORENZO
When long-lost loves are cast as long-lost lovers, two squabbling actors are slow to learn their lines but quick to ignite an old flame. MacArthur “Genius”
Sarah Ruhl leads us on-stage, back-stage and out the stage door as reality collides with fiction in this raucous and revealing play within a play.

CONTACT THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION PARTNERSHIPS AT 310.208.6500 EXT. 141 TO HELP THE GROWING NEEDS OF THE GREATER LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY
HUNDREDS MORE HIGH SCHOOLERS SERVEDTHANKS TO A GENEROUS CHALLENGE GRANT BY THE EDWARD A. & AI O. SHAY Family Foundation and individual donors, Geffen Playhouse recently added a second all-student
matinee for Barcelona. 500 students will experience theater for the first time, as well as in-class sessions
with Geffen Playhouse Teaching Artists before and after the show.
This additional matinee performance will effectively double the number of students served, as the High
School Partnerships Program currently supports 500 students from 4 different high schools. Many of
these students are living in some of the most low-income, isolated neighborhoods of East Los Angeles,
South Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. The depth of this program, which includes pre- and
post-show workshops, coupled with exposure to a full season of Gil Cates Theater productions, yields a
strong, lasting impact on the students. Their progress as thoughtful theatergoers has been witnessed on
a continual basis by teachers, principals and parents. Through your gracious spirit, your generosity and
your commitment to the entire Los Angeles community, Geffen Playhouse has been able to build new
partnerships with these underserved high schools, extending the program’s impact into 2016.
However, the job is far from over. There are still more than 10 high schools on a year-long waiting
list for this extraordinary High School Partnerships Program. While the addition of a second student
matinee for a single production is exciting, Geffen Playhouse aims to add a second student matinee for
every Gil Cates Theater production in the 2016/2017 season! This is only possible with the continued
support of generous patrons like you.

t. WISHFUL DRINKINGInspired by her life in Hollywood, and created
right here at the Geffen Playhouse, Carrie Fisher’s
Wishful Drinking was a wild romp with hilariously
revealing stories ranging from her debut in
Shampoo to a galaxy far, far away in Star Wars.
The production then traveled to Berkeley Rep
and on to New York’s famed Studio 54.
