PEARL CHURCHApril 18, 2014Good Friday

Please enter humbly, worship deeply, and leave quietly this evening with your heart centered on the suffering of Christ for us and for our salvation. You will observe a diminishing of light throughout the service in the pattern of tenebrae worship. Tenebrae means shadows, and so our worship will include an experience of some of the shadows that Christ endured.

CALL TO WORSHIPMy soul is consumed with longing. My soul languishes in parched countryside. With open mouth I pant.

Hope deferred makes my heart sick.I’m sick. You’re sick. We are all heart-sick with longing.

Someone. Anyone.

Something. Anything.

Let my longing lick a drop of water;Soothe my soul with something wet. (Adaptations from Psalm 119:20, 81, 131; Proverbs 13:12)

SCRIPTUREJohn 4–A Story About Every Person’s LongingWhen a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who

1

Page 3: 140418 good friday

drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water!”

SCRIPTUREPsalm 120–A Heartsick Song for PeaceIn my distress I cry to the LORD, that he may answer me: “Deliver me, O LORD, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.”  What shall be given to you? And what more shall be done to you, you deceitful tongue? A warrior’s sharp arrows, with glowing coals of the broom tree!  Woe is me, that I am an alien in Meshech, that I must live among the tents of Kedar. Too long have I had my dwelling among those who hate peace. I am for peace; but when I speak, they are for war.   Leader: The word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God.

REFLECTIONFrom The Peaceable Kingdom, by Stanley HauerwasMoreover the fragmentation of our world is not only “out there,” but it is in our own souls. Amid fragments it is extremely hard to maintain our moral identity. We feel pulled in different directions by our various roles and convictions, unsure whether there is or can be any coherence to our lives. We become divided selves, more easily tempted to violence since, being unsure of ourselves, we are easily threatened by any challenge that might rob us of what little sense of self we have achieved.

3

Page 5: 140418 good friday

Lacking any habits or institutions sufficient to sustain an ethos of honor, we become cynical. By suspecting all, by assuming that behind every cause lies self-interest and behind every act of charity a psychological payoff, we hope to protect ourselves from being misused or lost. Yet cynicism inevitably proves too corrosive. Its acid finally poisons the self, leaving no basis for self-respect because it renders all activities unworthy of our moral commitment.

SCRIPTUREPsalm 123–A Heartsick Song for HelpTo you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,so our eyes look to the LORD our God, until he has mercy upon us.

Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.

Our soul has had more than its fill of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

REFLECTIONFrom Rilke’s Book of Hours, III. IIt feels as though I make my waythrough massive rocklike a vain of orealone, encased.

I am so deep inside itI can’t see the path or any distance:everything is closeand everything closing in on mehas turned to stone.

Since I still don’t know enough about pain, this terrible darkness makes me small. If it’s you, though–

press down hard on me, break in that I may know the weight of your hand, and you, the fullness of my cry.

SCRIPTUREPsalm 126–A Heartsick Song for JoyWhen the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.

Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the watercourses in the Negeb. May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy. Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.

Leader: The word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God.

REFLECTIONFrom The Ragamuffin Gospel, by Brennan ManningSooner or later we are confronted with the painful truth of our inadequacy and insufficiency. Our security is shattered and our bootstraps are cut. Once the fervor has passed, weakness and infidelity appear. We discover our inability to add even a single inch to our spiritual stature. There begins a long winter of discontent that eventually flowers into gloom, pessimism, and a subtle despair: subtle because it goes unrecognized, unnoticed, and therefore unchallenged. It takes the form of boredom, drudgery. We are overcome by the ordinariness of life, by daily duties done over and over again. We secretly admit that the call of Jesus is too demanding, that surrender to the Spirit is beyond our reach. We start acting like everyone else. Life takes on a joyless, empty quality. We begin to resemble the leading character in Eugene O’Neill’s play The Great God Brown: “Why am I afraid to dance, I who love music and rhythm and grace and song and laughter? Why am I afraid to live, I who love life and the beauty of flesh and the living colors of the earth and sky and sea? Why am I afraid to love, I who love love?” Something is radically wrong.

PRECIOUS LORD, TAKE MY HANDThomas A. Dorsey, George N. Allen

Precious Lord, take my hand, Lead me on, help me stand,I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;Through the storm, through the night,Lead me on to the light: Take my hand, precious Lord,Lead me home.

When my way grows drear,Precious Lord, linger near,When my life is almost gone,Hear my cry, hear my call,Hold my hand lest I fall:Take my hand, precious Lord,Lead me home.

When the darkness appearsAnd the night draws near,And the day is past and gone,At the river I stand,Guide my feet, hold my hand:Take my hand, precious Lord,Lead me home.

SCRIPTUREPsalm 130–A Heartsick Song for ForgivenessOut of the depths I cry to you, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice!Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!  If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered.  I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.  O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

REFLECTIONGrace, by George HerbertMy stock lies dead, and no increaseDoth my dull husbandry improve:O let thy graces without cease                                       Drop from above!

If still the sun should hide his face,Thy house would but a dungeon prove,Thy works, night’s captives: O let grace                                       Drop from above!

9

Page 11: 140418 good friday

The dew doth ev’ry morning fall; And shall the dew outstrip thy dove? The dew, for which grass cannot call,                                       Drop from above.

Death is still working like a mole,And digs my grave at each remove:Let grace work too, and on my soul                                       Drop from above.

Sin is still hammering my heartUnto a hardness, void of love:Let suppling grace, to cross his art,                                       Drop from above.

O come! for thou dost know the way:Or if to me thou wilt not move,Remove me, where I need not say,                                       Drop from above.

SCRIPTUREPsalm 133–A Heartsick Song for UnityHow very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD ordained his blessing, life forevermore.   Leader: The word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God.

REFLECTION Adapted from Connecting Christ, by MetzgerThe Father who shares life with his Son gives his Son to us so that we might become members of his family through the Spirit. This God makes it possible for us to share life with others. Many Christians confess the Trinity in name only. They are often very fearful and reluctant to talk about the Trinity. If they do talk about the Trinity they often resort to mathematical formulas and recipes: “The Trinity is like 1x1x1=1” or “Take an egg white, egg yolk, and egg shell, and mix them in a blender; there you have the Trinity.” No wonder many Christians find the doctrine of the Trinity irrelevant, with no bearing on life and relationships. But our faith is not based on some formula or recipe. It is based on the good news that the Father and Son invite us to share life filled with selfless love with them in the Spirit. This is no incoherent mystery. While we cannot define love, we can describe and experience it. Divine love is the ultimate life-giving mystery, as the Father gives his Son’s life over to sacrificial death to save the world through the Spirit.

HOMILY

TEARING OF THE VEILLeader: And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split. (Matthew 27:50-51)

Together we tear the purple squares to symbolize the veil being torn in two.

Page 15: 140418 good friday

Leader: You have been provided black paper and black ink pens. By this means, what you write on the paper, will be known only by you and God. We encourage you to use this opportunity to confess your longings and to forsake your pilgrimages which have led you away from Jesus. After the benediction feel free to remain in silent prayer while writing your response to God. Then, as you leave, you are invited to nail your paper to the cross and by that action symbolize your decision to take your longing to Jesus, the passover Lamb who gives us life.

BENEDICTION
