(Hong Kong, 4th Oct 2016)–Poly Auction (Hong Kong) Limited (Poly Aution Hong Kong) concluded its round

of autumn auctions with a total of HK$1.115 billion. 14 sales were organized for the seasonal event, namely “Chinese and Asian Modern and Contemporary Art”, “Glossiness of Uncarved Jade – Special Auction of Cui Ruzhuo [VII]”, “Fine Modern Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy”, “Memories of the Past – Important Collection from Mr. Wang Boqun and the Republic Period”, “A Selection of Chen Wen Hsi‟s Paintings and Modern and Contemporary Ink Art”, “Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy”, “Important Jewels”, “An Important Sale of Imperial Works of Art”, “Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art”, “Treasures of Buddhist Art from the Collection of Yuyi”, “In Pursuit of the Past – A Selection of Archaic Jades, Bronzes and Ceramics”, “Important Watches”, “Noble Handbags and Accessories” and “Prestige Collections”.

Director of Poly Auction Hong Kong Zhao Xu said, “The 14 thematic sales for autumn have concluded with flying colors. Through our Hong Kong operations, we have learned to focus on excellent services and the Asian market‟s interest in arts. On the turnover front, Chinese and Asian Modern and Contemporary Art, Contemporary Ink Wash and Jewels are three major categories in our Hong Kong operations. of two IIA Type brilliant-cut white diamonds with D Color and Flawless Clarity. „A Lotus Pond‟ by Wu Guanzhong was sold for HK$106.2 million, while Cui Ruzhuo‟s masterpiece „Lotus in the Autumn Wind‟ yielded HK$141.6 million – a telltale sign of Asian connoisseurs‟ interest in prominent Chinese artists. Meanwhile, the Jewels and Prestige Collections sale auctioned out a set of two IIA Type brilliant-cut white diamonds, the largest D-color set with flawless clarity, polish and symmetry to go under the hammer, for HK$82.6 million, alongside other exquisite gems totaling over HK$20 million. The remarkable seasonal performance further consolidates the presence of our Jewels and Prestige Collections in Hong Kong and the rest of the region. Thanks to the ardent effort of our Hong Kong team, 80% of our clients come from Hong Kong and Asia, a remarkable achievement when you consider that it was only four years back in our inaugural stage in Hong Kong that our clientele was composed of 80% mainland Chinese. Next year sees the 5th anniversary of Poly Aution Hong Kong, I look forward to the Spring Sales in the coming year.”

“Following last season‟s sale of Wu Guanzhong‟s „The Zhou Village‟, which set a historic high for Asian contemporary arts, we have once again made headlines with a rich and exquisite array of lots offered by seven departments under Poly Auction Hong Kong. Contributing to the rosy results of the seasonal sales are Wu Guanzhong‟s „A Lotus Pond‟ and Sanyu‟s „Pink Nude on Floral Sheet‟, a sign that Chinese arts will continue to fare well in auctions,” said Alex Chang, Managing Director at Poly Auction Hong Kong.

Chinese and Asian Modern and Contemporary Art

The Chinese and Asian Modern and Contemporary Art sale continues to build on its successful streak, with the sales

of 133 articles totaling more than HK$200 million, among which six were sold for over HK$10 million. „A Lotus

Pond‟, created by Wu Guanzhong in 1997, was sold to the Powerlong Museum in Shanghai for HK$106.2 million.

„Pink Nude on Floral Sheet‟, a work by Sanyu in the Collection of Robert Frank, yielded HK$59 million as the

hammer fell. Also performing well in the auctions were Wu Guanzhong‟s „Early Spring‟, „Autumn onto the Wall‟, „A

Fisherman‟s Yard‟, and „Pumpkins‟, with results far exceeding the pre-sale estimates. Particularly noticeable was

„Autumn onto the Wall‟ which fetched three times more than its preliminary estimate after intense bidding. Fan

Tchunpi‟s „A Flute Player‟ and Li Chen‟s „Golden Rain‟ also set new auction records for the respective artists.

Jamie Yu, Senior Specialist of the Chinese and Asian Modern and Contemporary Art Department said, “The works of

modern Chinese maestros are particularly well-received, with top lots including masterpiece series by Sanyu and Wu

Guanzhong. This confirms the robust development of the art market and the leading position of Poly Auction Hong

Kong. The steady performance of contemporary arts is more than attractive to collectors in the region. Young and

middle-aged artists also benefit from this trend.”

Four sales were held by the Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Department. In addition to the initial Chinese

Ceramics and Works of Art, three sales namely “Treasures of Buddhist Art from the Collection of Yuyi”, “In Pursuit

of the Past – A Selection of Archaic Jades, Bronzes and Ceramics” and “An Important Sale of Imperial Works of Art”

were organized, with staggering totals of HK$105 million.

“The Treasures of Buddhist Art from the Collection of Yuyi” presented a selective collection of gilt-bronze statues which attests the artistic value of the imperial artifacts in Ming and Qing dynasties. One of the highlights was the gilt-bronze Vajrasattva from the 13th century Nepal, sold for HK$21.12 million to be ranked first in the top lots at the sale. The bronze ritual gong from the late Shang dynasty, which appears on the cover of the In Pursuit of the Past – A Selection of Archaic Jades, Bronzes and Ceramics catalog, also brought an astounding HK$13.57 million. Rounds of fierce bidding also sent the price up for the archaic bronze ding from the Shang dynasty and the fine huanghuali table from the Ming dynasty, achieving sale prices several times higher than the original estimates.

“The sale of Ming and Qing ceramics continues to be strong. We will steadily increase the size of this category while maintain the overall quality of our sales. The Treasures of Buddhist Art from the Collection of Yuyi sale, well-received as it was in the category of fine statues, attests to the sturdy growth of the Buddhist art market,” said Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Specialist Du Jibo.

Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Specialist Mu Wenbo said, “High-quality works remain the hotspot in this market,

with rare and exquisite lots from all categories being the focus of attention for all collectors. We are satisfied with the

auction results.”

Chinese Paintings

The second day of Poly Auction Hong Kong‟s 2016 autumn sales was a great success, counting HK$552 million in total receipts from five sales offered by Chinese Paintings Department, namely the “Fine Modern Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy”, “Glossiness of Uncarved Jade – Special Auction of Cui Ruzhuo [VII]”, “A Selection of Chen Wen Hsi‟s Paintings and Modern and Contemporary Ink Art”, “Memories of the Past – Important Collection from Mr. Wang Boqun and the Republic Period” and “Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy”, an eloquent testimony to the confidence of collectors in Poly Auction Hong Kong.

“Given the overall environment after shifts in the Chinese painting and calligraphy market, the fact that our five sales today achieved this kind of success is an indication of collectors‟ recognition of and trust in us. Many important lots achieved the best price that could be hoped for, reflecting the stability of the Hong Kong painting and calligraphy market. This shows our degree of commitment in selecting the best auction pieces. We have been striving to establish ourselves in Hong Kong and to enter the international market, thereby offering the Chinese as well as international markets the finest Chinese arts. We would like to thank all collectors for their staunch support as we move hand in hand towards a bright future,” said Luo Gedi, Director of Chinese Paintings.
