Amen Michael Leunig A MEETING WITH THE MINISTER Last Friday, the College Leadership team were delighted to welcome our local member, the Minister for Educa on and Industrial Rela ons, Cameron Dick MP, to Loreto. Amongst other things, his visit provid-ed a mely opportunity for us to discuss the Queensland government’s “Flying Start” program that will see Year 7’s enter secondary schools in 2015. Educa onally, I believe this to be a very posi ve change that will enable Year 7 students improved access to specialist teachers and facili es to enhance their learning as envisaged by the Na onal Curriculum which will be implemented from 2012. As I reflect on the term that has been, the brevity and the intensity of it, I marvel at the commitment of the staff and the students. Let us rejoice in their op mism and their success in living through a most challenging term.

Griffith Guaranteed Admission Scheme

This scheme grants appropriately qualified students, based on Year 11 and Semester 1 Year 12 results, guaranteed admission into Griffith University programs. Admission into all programs listed requires that applicants are current OP eligible; who have, besides the early admission criteria listed, at least SAs in other subjects; and meet the program prerequisites. NOTE: Both Humani es and Law have addi onal requirements. Offers to students will be forced through the QTAC or UAC offer round in December. Students must have finalised QTAC or UAC applica ons with their preferred program listed as first preference to ensure offers are made. Each Year 12 homeroom will have a printout of the Guaranteed Admission Scheme for use at school and the full document can be found on the school intranet under learning resources/careers/Griffith Guaranteed Admission Scheme Table. Music News Loreto Music Fes val – A ached to this newsle er is a dra of the Accompanist Rehearsal Schedule for those students who will be using the official Fes val Accompanist at the Finals Concert. These rehearsals only last 10 minutes each so you need to be completely prepared and arrive punctually. Please organise a green slip with your homeroom teacher or at the music office so that you can leave class at the appropriate me. You should check the music no ceboard on Monday 20 June for any last minute changes to this dra schedule.

Loreto Music Fes val Supper – It is important that all students who are performing in the Finals Concert please remember to bring a plate of food for supper on the night. Any other students / parents who are a ending are also invited to contribute to this supper if they wish.

Guitar Ensemble One ‐ As a result of their highly successful performances at the Brisbane Powerhouse with Karin Schaupp and Ka e Noonan, Guitar Ensemble One was invited to appear on Channel 10's Totally Wild programme. Last Wednesday members of GE1 had an unforge able experience doing the film shoot on stage with the crew and presenter Ranger Stacey Thomson. The girls performed excellently and also found out first-hand what is involved in doing a four minute segment for TV – more than three hours of filming! Sec ons of music had to be played mul ple mes to get different camera angles from wide shots to extreme close-ups, and the guitarists handled it all in great style. Guitar Captain Emma-Shay Guilfoyle even gave Stacey a quick guitar lesson which will feature on the segment when it airs. Well done to all girls concerned – you displayed excellent concentra on over an extended period while having a camera occasionally six cen metres from your instrument. Your behaviour was impeccable and you acted with a great sense of professionalism. Well done!

Year 10 Recording studio excursion – As part of the Year 10 curriculum, Music classes will be going to Ghostgum Studio this week to professionally record their group performances. Mrs Nielson’s 10 Music A class will be a ending this excursion TOMORROW (Wednesday 15 June) and Ms Hartung’s 10 Music B class will be a ending on Thursday 16 June. Students involved are not required to wear school uniform to this excursion.

At the beginning of next term, all of the student computers in the College will have the Australian Government’s Cybersafety bu on installed. This is a free applica on which is also able to be installed on any of your home computers. Sport Department News Soccer This week’s Draw: Round 5 ‐ 15 June This week the Junior A and Junior B teams play at home (please note the Junior A draw has now changed and can be found on www.bsgsa.spor ngpulse.net ). The Open A team have a BYE this week. The Junior A team play All Hallows at Annerley Soccer Club, 98 Victoria Terrace, Annerley; while the Junior B team are also at home to Our Lady’s College, at Annerley Soccer Club. The home games will finish at 5:00pm and students need to be picked up at the venue. Could parents please ensure that students have their name marked off with Mr Jones on departure. Loreto thought we had done enough to win the game when two minutes from the end of the game Lourdes Hill College scored to get a lucky draw. All the girls played

Results/Match Reports: Round 4 ‐ 8 June

Open One ‐ Our Round 4 clash was a one-sided affair with our girls tallying 17 unanswered goals against Mount St Michael’s Open 2 team. The game got off to a slow start over the first few minutes un l a pin point accurate cross from Leah Carey on right wing found the s ck of Jemma Stubbs prowling in the circle and deflected like a bullet into the back le corner of the box, scoring the first of her two goals for the fixture. This seemed to signal our girls in the blue and yellow that it was me to exert dominance over the game and an avalanche of goals followed. As well as pu ng in great ground work via forcing several short corners, Elise Gellweiler added one goal to our total. Anna Hertle, playing right inner, seemed to appear like a ninja at the mouth of the box on one occasion, pouncing on the ball and making it ra le the backboard in short me. Leah Carey notched up three scoring shots while Bridget Myers, not to be outdone, also po ed a trifecta for her first game of the season. Tyler Kilvington, the quiet achiever of our team, snuck in two very impressive goals while Clare

Griffiths pushed a scorcher into the back of the net later in the game. Isabel Mowen had a rare s nt up in the forwards this match and showed what a versa le player she is by accumula ng three goals over the a ernoon. Perhaps the most impressive display of the round was the determina on of Ellen “Machine Gun” Carey who, a er peppering the opposi on goalie relentlessly with no less than eleven unsuccessful shots at goal, managed to finally get an absolute blinder past the keeper in the dying minutes. A great, fun game with a spectacular result – Well done, Loreto One!

This week’s Draw: Round 5 ‐ 15 June The ladder as we enter the final round s ll has Loreto Two (11 points) on top of the ladder followed by St Rita’s (10 points) in second place and Loreto One (9 points) in third place. At this stage it is unsure if Loreto One share equal third place with Mt St Michael’s One.

This Wednesday, 15th June, is the game we have all been wai ng for with Loreto One playing Loreto Two. Stand back, watch and enjoy. Good luck!

We have two very nervous coaches preparing themselves mentally for the meet. The results from previous games would indicate both teams are very closely matched. A win by Loreto One in the final round will result in both Loreto teams in equal place.

NAB Cup Competition With the last round complete we now need to focus on round two. In round two we meet with Brisbane State High. The venue for the match against BSHS will be East Tiger Turf at Carina. The date and me is 26th July from 4 to 6pm. All students, teachers, parents and supporters are welcome to come and support the girls as they ba le it out on the turf. So, please add this date to your “must do list”. Further details on travel to the venue for players will be posted next term. In the mean me, training resumes on Thursday, 16th June. Open A – The Open A team had a close game with Mt

Alvernia College, which saw some brilliant speed and defence

down court with both a ackers and defenders taking

numerous intercepts. Defensively the girls communicated well

and put some pressure on the opposi on, which resulted in a

few held balls and some excellent turn overs around the circle

from Ashley O’Connor and Eliza Davies. In a ack both Jenna

and Clare made some crisp drives to the top of the circle and

threw some excellent high balls in to our goal shooters.

Unfortunately the last quarter saw Mt Alvernia score a few

quick goals, to defeat us by 22 to 13. Overall, the girls played

well and are improving each and every week. Coach ‐

Open B – Loreto won 25 - 22 against St John Fisher. The girls stayed strongly for the first half of the game only le ng the opposi on in with some minor errors. However they really got it together and played an amazing last quarter to ensure the victory. Special men on must go to Emily McCoy for her persistence in defence which resulted in many turnovers!

Junior A ‐ Congratula ons to the 8A's on their first win of the season against St John Fisher College. The girls are improving every week showing off their great teamwork, support and skills. John Fisher kept trying right to the end but our girls were too strong and were able to keep them out which shows

Junior B – A very close game this week against Mt Alvernia College with only 1 point differnece. Equal at half me, some impressive defence by Grace O’Shea and great control of play by Kate O’Sullivan through the centre court, saw us pull ahead by one goal in the final quarter. It was a great game by

Junior C - The team defeated Brigidine 17- 4. A great game by our girls given many of them played in posi ons they had never played before, due to a par ally depleted team. Tiarna Brock played tenaciously in defence; a dropped ball is never safe in her presence! Rebecca Lauenstein also played with great intensity and very strong leads in each of the posi ons in

Intermediate A ‐ Congratula ons to the girls on their first win of the season! The first half of the game was closely matched against the Mt St Michael’s team, but our strong defence and constant intercep ons kept the ball largely in our possession in the second half, leading to a convincing win of 23 - 14. The girls worked together seamlessly and their improved communica on paid off. While they all deserve a men on, Samantha Firrell was par cularly formidable in her centre

Department of Transport and Mains Road Research Project ‐ A survey is currently being

undertaken by Queensland based consultants, Environment Land Heritage Pty Ltd (ELH), on behalf of the Department of Transport and Mains Road to iden fy the main difficul es/barriers being faced by young Qld drivers between 16 – 25 as well as determining the extent of the problems faced. The research team would like to interview young QLD driv-ers between 16 – 25 years to hear their perspec ve on the issues and have set up an internet survey to give them the opportunity to be involved. Pre‐carnival Field Events in shot put and high jump The shotput and high jump events will be held at school prior to the carnival. We do not have enough me or space for these events on the day. Students compe ng must be in correct PE uniform including cap and shoes. The dates are as follows:
