Deer Chuck:

Could you help me with some information aboutBirmigham? Robert Penn Warren is doing a book, "whoSpeaks for the Negro?", which we will publish, aboutcivil rights. He suspects that the main Birmingham news-papers are owned by Coz, who is from the North. Do youknow if this is true? Can it be substantiated? Wes wouldgreatly appreciate the information inasmuch as it isimportant to one of Warren's thses in the book.

With all best wishes from Gayyour family for a wonderful Christens.

and me to you and

Sincerely,

Rhl:al

Dear Nan:

Birmingham has only two daily newspapers -- theBirmingham News and the Birmingham Post-Herald.

The former is owned by S. I. Newhouse and thelatter by Scripps-Howard. Cox owns the Atlantanewspapers (except for the Atlanta Times, a newadventure in right-wing dailyism) but not thosein Birmingham. To go a little further, the Coxpapers in Atlanta, the Journal and Constitution, have exhibited leadership in racial crises viaRalph McGill et al; Birmingham was not equallyblessed.

I donut know what Robert Penn Warren's thesis is.But I consider myself the worlds' single, out-standing authority on defaulting Yankee newspaperowners whose southern progeny blew hot when coolnorthern breezes might have calmed the water.

Regards to Gay.

Sincerely,

Charles Morgan, Jr.CM j 1
