All 25 students from Yr 10/9 were brilliant throughout, showed real determination to get through some difficult moments and worked really well together in both their map reading, cooking. Please congratulate them if you see them! A huge thanks to all the teachers who gave up their weekend to help make the weekend a success. The weekend would not have been possible without their fantastic support. The Newsletter of Bethnal Green Academy and Sixth Form DofE Expedition A record number of 15 secondary schools, and more than 300 students, entered this year’s competition, run by Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership (THEBP) and supported by members of the Lloyd’s Community Programme (LCP). LCP volunteers assisted at the inaugural public speaking workshops and with the judging of both the semi-finals and the final.Twelve competitors made it through to the final. Many congratulations to BGA’s Ciaran Constable once again on winning the second place in the Public Speaking Final this year and what a great speech he made! Public Speaking Award for Ciaran Celebration of Women’s Day BGA On Thursday 13th March the 19 th annual Tower Hamlets Public Speaking Competition was held at Lloyd’s of London. Year 10 students Shapla, Arifa, twins Tasnim and Taslim and Akmal, Year 9, took part in a 'dragons den' style pitch last Wednesday to TFL, Safer transport representatives, Mayor Of Hackney and other judges in an attempt to obtain funds for the SchoolWatch App they have been working on. Although other students have been involved in the project , the above students were chosen to represent BGA. It was such a proud moment, our students not only repeatedly practiced the presentation, wrote the PowerPoint and planned the bid, they did this in their free time. SchoolWatch app funding This week we have been celebrating International Women’s Day with a week of assemblies, films, debate and more. The week began with a women’s football match and on Wednesday we welcomed guest speakers Anneessa Mahmood (LSE Students Union) and Inayah Zaheen (UCL Students Union) who spoke about their experiences as women in male dominated environments and how they developed leadership skills in their own educational settings. The week ended with an entertaining and thought provoking staff and student debate. Music and dance performances On Thursday, students who will soon be dancing at Disneyland Paris performed their work to parents/ carers, students and staff. On Friday it was the turn of BGA Music students who sang and played songs they have learned for their Music coursework. The BGA band followed with three numbers to finish off the event. Well done to all students who performed.

Celebration of Women’s Day BGA

Middlesex Indoor Athletics Success On Saturday and Sunday the weekend was the Middlesex Indoor Athletics competition at Lee Valley. This was at Under 15's, 17's, 19's and adult.   This was a club, not a school event, with all the major London Athletics clubs attending. (Enfield and Haringey Harriers, Belgrave Harriers, Battersea Park Harriers, Victoria Park, Thames Valley)

BookLook! The next BookLook is on the 31st of March! Students will have a say on how they feel their work is being marked by teachers.

School Council Social Action Campaign with the London CitizensStudent Food Advisory Panel Last Month in February, Students met with Martin from Accent Catering to talk about how they would like to improve school dinners! The catering company said they will listen to suggestions taken from the Student Food Advisory Panel and adapt those using healthier eating methods. This Month, ‘Martin’s Month’, these suggestions were taken on board – What did you think?

If you have any questions or queries or would like to make a suggestion – drop a note in the Student Voice Box!School bags All students must also have a black school bag which can hold at least two text books, a selection of exercise books and PE kit.

End of Year Trip – Year councils discussed places trips they would like to go on as part of the end of year trip. Form reps will be speaking to their forms about where they would like to go, how much money they are prepared to pay and look at alternative options.

Prom Committee Year 11 prom committee discussed ideas for colour/theme, food and music for the prom. At the Next meeting, Miss Morris will feedback on the top three choices for each!

Women in Leadership Workshop – Students were involved in an interesting discussion on the barriers that prevent women taking on leadership roles and considered ways in which they could be overcome.  Following heated discussions around the table, students were inspired to create change at school. Plans include creating a discussion group or society to talk about issues, start a blog and campaign on a zero tolerance policy towards sexist language and behaviour!

We’re launching the Hidden Leaders project for selected female students who will embark on a 12 week long programme leading to a social action project they care about.

The under 13's boys football team played Bishop Challoner Sports College (22nd March).BGA 1 v 0 Bishop Challoner   Goal Scorer Sakayia Hassan  

Staff swim, Cycle and Run for good causesBGA staff started Friday very early at 5.20am with a swim in the Olympic Pool at the Queen Elizabeth Park. They then cycled to BGA and ran round the MUGA as many times as they could.

Students paid to guess the total mileage of all the teachers for Sport Relief. The total was an impressive 132.9 miles! Thanks to Ms Hay for getting up early to follow the party with her camera!

There was also a student sponsored run around the MUGA after school. Watch this space to see how much was raised for Sport Relief!
