Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus after the 6:30 AM & 8:00 AM Masses

Jesus said these words to St. Margaret Mary, “I

promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that

its all-powerful love will grant to all those who

receive Holy Communion on nine First Fridays of

consecutive months the grace of final repentance;

they will not die under my displeasure or without

receiving their sacraments, my divine Heart making

itself their assured refuge at the last moment."

With regard to this promise

Our Lord required:

1. Receive Holy Communion 2. That the nine Fridays must

be consecutive

3. That they must be made in

honor of His Sacred Heart

First Saturday Devotion to the

Immaculate Heart of Mary

Rosary and Devotion after the 8:00 AM Mass.

The following are the conditions Our Lady requests

regarding the First Saturdays of the month to obtain

for us “at the hour of death the graces necessary for

salvation."

With the intention of making reparation to the

Immaculate Heart of Mary:

1. Go to Confession 2. Receive Holy Communion 3. Recite the Rosary 4. “Keep me company for an additional fifteen minutes

while meditating on the

mysteries of the Rosary.” (It is preferable to

meditate on one mystery each month during

these additional fifteen minutes.)

The Fifth Commandment

by Landon DePasquale, Director of New Evangelization

Thou shalt not kill.

The Fifth Commandment concerns, first and foremost, the

protection of human life. Having created man in his own

image, God instructs humanity to respect human life. It is

tempting to look at this commandment and gloss over it.

Most of us haven’t killed anyone, so we figure we are good.

Yet, there are all sorts of ways we fudge the line around

murder.

The Church has always condemned intentional killing of

innocents. There is never a context where intentionally

killing an innocent person is justified. While there are

circumstances where killing a guilty party is not prohibited,

such as self-defense or a just war, even those conditions do

not remove the prohibition of intentionally killing innocent

people. Often, I hear people agree wholeheartedly with the

preceding teaching and then immediately carve out an

exception. What if a person is greatly suffering, shouldn’t

we let them choose when to end their life? What about a

woman whose life is endangered by her pregnancy,

shouldn’t that woman be able to save herself even if it

means procuring an abortion?

The problem with these sorts of exceptions is that they miss

the point of the prohibition on killing innocents. It isn’t

based on circumstances or utility, but on the very nature of

who we are as humans. All people were made in the image

of God. Our nature was further dignified by the Incarnation,

where humanity and divinity were united in the single

person, Jesus Christ. It is because of who we are, because of

the dignity we have been given by God, that killing an

innocent, even for a supposedly good end, is always wrong.

I think the desire to carve out exceptions for things like

euthanasia or abortion stem from a misunderstanding of

suffering. We tend to treat suffering as something to be

avoided at all costs, minimized when it is unavoidable, and

escaped as quickly as possible. Such a view can see no

good in the suffering of someone near the end of their life.

As Catholics, we believe that suffering can be redemptive.

When we unite our sufferings with those of Christ on the

cross, the difficulties we experience are given meaning and

serve to help us achieve salvation.

As much as we may be tempted by a good outcome, killing

an innocent is never the answer. Next week, we will look at

Jesus’ extension of the Fifth Commandment, to love our

neighbors.

Fr. Chuck Beierwaltes C.Ss.R will be here the weekend of August 6/7 to update us on the current status of Sarnelli House, the

HIV/AIDS orphanage in North East Thailand. There will be a second collection at the masses. Go to web

page sarnelliorphanage.org for more information. Below is a summary of a visit to the Orphanage by Jerry Olp, son of

parishioner Tom Olp

Sarnelli House: Providing Hope and Love in NE Thailand

I navigate my mountain bike along the road of packed red dirt. The day’s

hot sun gracefully falls towards the horizon, giving way to a much

appreciated cooler temperature. Locals, reclining in the shade of their

modest homes or manning the small shops along the roadside, smile

widely and call out, “Sa Wa Dii!”—Hello! The rice fields stretching

towards the golden setting sun are bare and dry, having been harvested at

the start of the dry season in November. With heads bowed, Zebu cattle

chew the once green grass as birds sing gracefully in the distance.

I stop pedaling and coast to a gated entry where inside, dozens of

toddlers joyously play on and around a trampoline. After only a minute

from being spotted, I am ambushed by the amiable army, where a

bombardment of hugs and laughter are exchanged from both sides. Their energy unrelenting, I constantly pick up and swing child

after child, until I leave sweaty and exhausted—but content with the fact that even without a common language to converse in, a

mutual sense of friendship and love was shared by both parties.

Sarnelli House, a collection of six homes for orphaned and children with HIV/AIDS, is located just outside the city of

Nongkhai, Thailand, on the border of Laos. Started in 1998 by Father Michael Shea and the Redemptorist Fathers of Thailand,

Sarnelli House cares for children ranging from infants to those entering their twenties, giving the children an opportunity to

achieve success and happiness through education, love, and support. The children at Sarnelli House, despite their troubled pasts

and current ailments, go on with bright smiles, eventually to go on to higher education or pursue careers throughout Thailand.

Staying at Sarnelli House for about one week, I witnessed the amount of financial and logistical planning it takes to run an

orphanage of this size. Father Mike, along with the dozens of other staff members, such as the selfless cook Pidah (who cooks

amazing food!), provide an example of a smoothly run charity, giving the children tangible valuables like food, shelter,

transportation, education, medication, and even employment. This does not consider the intangible valuables such as love,

kindness, nurturing, support, and spirituality, which are all given in heaping amounts to all of the children.

Having spent one week at Sarnelli House, I left feeling inspired and loved by Father Mike, the staff, and the children’s

generosity and hospitality. Sarnelli House is a truly amazing place, providing shelter, food, love, and support to those most in need.
