CULL EWES & RAMS (74) Max. £111 What a trade! Simply nowhere near enough forward with the ewes averaging just over £70 and rams averaging £88.64. STIRKS (53) AUCTIONEER: CHARLIE COLEMAN 07494 588013 A good entry of mixed sorts to bring us into the New Year with plenty of competition out in force looking to source stirks. Top price to Ollie Hares today with his Limousin bull sailing to £335 and his Hereford bull to £325. Close behind was a lovely pen of Blue heifers from regular supporters Sam Baker & family flying to £320 with his steers to £295. Their Angus heifers sold well to £310. Plenty of Friesians today with bulls to £150 from the Dykes of Devizes with good sorts from the Powell family to £140 who also sold Shorthorns to £150. Similar goods from the Jones family saw young animals to £120. Young fresh Angus from Goldbourn Farm really ticked the boxes with bulls to £270. It was really good to see a super run of stirks from Nunton Farm of Salisbury saw tremendous support to see 10week old Hereford bulls to £182 and heifers to £160. CALVED HEIFERS TO £1050 CALVED COWS TO £2000 A cracking start to the New Year and although a few less numbers forward quality and trade was very strong. Once again we saw a marvellous consignment of calved and in calf cows from the Bennett family. Their “Wind Star Red” 2nd lactation daughters were twice over £1900 to £1950. 2nd lactation “Hilltown Oblique” daughter to £1980 and “Cogent Twist” 3rd lactation Friesian Holstein to £2000!! Ayrshire and Ayrshire x cows 2nd – 3rd lactation from the same home sold well from £1520 - £1920. Older in calf Friesian Holstein cows due February with 4th and 6th lactation topped at £1020. Home reared standard types from Paul & Kay Trippick settled at £1050. More sorts entered for next week Wednesday 15th January.

CALVES (220) Starts 10.00am AUCTIONEERS: TIM HECTOR 07818 056 049 CHARLIE COLEMAN: 07494 588 013 Numbers similar to last week and trade continues to hold at levels exceeding those seen last year. Quality is still key to returns but more demand for all grades!

CONTINENTAL BULLS TO £358/HEIFERS TO £205 A good entry in terms of both numbers and quality, mainly Blues forward which were sought. Best sorts continue to see a fast trade and strong demand, medium and smaller sorts more selective! A super run from Stavordale Farms saw 5 bulls over £300 to top at £358! Others to £335 twice, medium sorts £200 - £270 and smaller calves to £200. A brighter trade for most forward with plenty of buyers around the ring ensured good returns. Best still seeing a premium with best over £170 to top at £205 from J Sprake & Partners. Plenty medium sorts £120 - £170 and smaller calves up to £100.

NATIVE BULLS TO £250/NATIVE HEIFERS TO £105 Plenty forward and a real mix of quality. Lots of buyers forward for all grades of calf and trade remained firm throughout. Angus bulls to £162 and heifers to £90. Hereford bulls to £250 and heifers to £105.

FRIESIAN TO £108 FLECKVIEH TO £310 A mix of sorts available saw a better trade today, best Holsteins £75 - £112.

Shorthorns to £155, super Fleckviehs sold to £310 and £300 from RTJ Voizey &

Partners.

STEERS TO £828 HEIFERS TO £895 Wishing all our customers a Happy & prosperous New Year, today in the store ring there was an excellent start to 2020 with a good representation of buyers to match the sparkling trade to follow.

CONTINENTAL What a start to the year! Demand very strong for the younger Continental single suckled cattle and buyers were very eager to purchase. A number of excellent, good conformation British Blue 8 – 9mo steers and heifers were present with Tim Handy of Purton seeing prices from £550 - £742. A tremendous consignment of 30 home bred Blues from Robert Bull 8 – 9mo created furious bidding with everyone wanting these very best bred cattle. His steers regularly over £800 and his heifers to £815! “Quality sells” is definitely the moto today and more were wanted. Suckled Simmental x steers presented by Simon Carey & family of Wick seeing strong prices to £605. Limited numbers of older Continentals but numbers wanted following the increased demand. Simmental heifers met a fast trade to £895 (20mo) from MD & DR James and similar Blue heifers to £845 from SJ Warren.

HEREFORD & ANGUS Trade starts the season ahead of supply with numbers wanted following the

increasing demand for finished cattle. Young Hereford steers started the season

well with Wintershill Estates suckler steers selling to £520 (9mo) and their

heifers to £480 (9mo). Similar Angus from Simon Carey & family also sold well

to £525 (8mo). Only a few feeding types on offer but again trade outstripping

supply with lean, jacketed Angus steers selling to £785 and £770 and similar

heifers to £645 all from C Thompson & Son.

FRIESIANS Limited numbers forward but all grades wanted. The British Friesian steers from C Thompson & Son set the trade on fire selling to over 160p/kg to £690 (24mo).
