Fetal period9th week through birth

9th to 13th weeks (within the first trimester)

•Growth and development of basic structures (heart, lungs, liver, vertebrae, sexual organs)

•Organization and connections between nervous system, muscles and circulatory system.

•New behavioral capabilities (kicking, sucking)

•At thirteen weeks measures 3 inches and weighs 3 ounces. (7.5 cm; 87grams)

At 10 weeks… about one inch longLiver functions begin around 11 weeks

Brain develops all its neurons§ Brain activity§ Eyes sensitive to light§ Ears sensitive to sound§ Maturation and

functioning of organs and various systems.

§ Age of viability:around 22 to 25 weeks

What is the meaning of “viability”?

Even at 26 weeks a pre-term infant requires intensive care and may or may not survive

without major neurological impairments.

• Cycles of activity, rest, sleep

• Turns and prepares for birth

• At birth, full term infant weighs approx. 7.5 lbs.

25th to 38th weeks(third trimester)

8 monthsTuned in to sensations from the outside world since 6 months gestational age

The fetus tunes in to the mother’s voice, the taste of her foods, her behavior patterns and her levels of calm or stress.
