The package is acceptable.

Breakdown sample view

Side a Side b

The pictures represent the front view of both side of a breakdown sample (side a is the

diamond machined surface).

Inlet Inspection

• The delivery includes 130 samples: Ø12 mm, thickness 2 mm• 5 units have been chosen and inspected

– Especially the diamond machined surface (pictures will follow on the next pages).

• All the units observed have been numerated 1 to 5 on the box.• The 5 units inspected need to be cleaned.• 1 of the 5 samples has a small scratch across its surface (#3,

slide 7).• 2 of the 5 pieces show damages on their edge:

– #4 on the external edge of its surface (slide 8).– #5 on the edge of the hole (slide 9).

Breakdown sample #1

This picture represents the first unit inspected.

We can observed that the surface need to be cleaned.

In the red circle we notice something on the surface, probably a fiber.

The disk should be cleaned and then inspected again.

Breakdown sample #2

This picture represents the second unit inspected.

We can observed that the surface need to be cleaned. The surface is cleaner than in the sample #1.

There is no apparent damage on the surface.

The disk should be cleaned and then inspected again.

Breakdown sample #3

This first picture represents the third unit observed.

We can observed that the surface need to be cleaned.

In the red circle we have noticed something on the surface that looks like a scratch.

The disk should be cleaned and then inspected again.

The second picture shows a microscopic view of the disk and the “scratch” which cross the entire surface.

Breakdown sample #4

This first picture represents the fourth unit observed.

We can observed that the surface need to be cleaned.

In the red circles we have noticed a defect on the edge of the sample (around 400 mm)

The disk should be cleaned and then inspected again.

The second picture shows a microscopic view of the disk and the “impact” which is on the edge of the sample.

Breakdown sample #5

Mag 32

This first picture represents the fifth unit observed.

We can observed that the surface need to be cleaned.

In the red circles we have noticed a defect on the edge of the hole of the sample (462 mm). The second picture shows the microscopic view of the disk and the “impact” on the edge of the hole.

The two other circle show stripes similar to the “scratch” of unit #3, except that in this case, on the microscope we do not see the scratch as in the second picture on page 7. Probably it is only a stain.

The disk should be cleaned and then inspected again.

Conclusions

1. The package is acceptable. 2. All the inspected samples need to be cleaned.3. 1 out of the 5 units has a small scratch all across its surface.• #3: (see page 7)

4. 2 out of the 5 units observed have an “impact” on their edges. Small, but still a defect on the diamond machined surface.

• #4: on the external edge (see page 8)• #5: on the edge of the hole (see page 9)

5. The samples should be sent to cleaning and then be inspected again.6. The final conclusion about acceptance of the samples for further tests has to

be taken by the responsible of the study (Tomoko Muranaka).
