1.3 ReflectionsTODAY I WILL BE ABLE TO REFLECT AN OBJECT OVER AN X OR Y AXIS
Activity• Each person will be receiving a picture
• You need to (individually) 2 minutes• Write down things you notice about the picture.
• Use a ruler
• Draw on the pictures with a white board pen
•Discuss with your group what you discovered(2 minutes)
Using your picture…
•Draw the line of reflection
•What do you notice about the distance of the reflections?
Reflections Just take a figure and flip it over a given axis
Patty Paper Exercise
• Given the figure use the patty paper to reflect over the line
Steps
1. Place patty paper over the coordinate plane
2. Trace the figure and the line of reflection
3. Flip Patty Paper over the line of reflection
4. Re-Trace the figure onto the graph(pressing hard)
The NEED to know of REFLECTIONS
• X=____ is a VERTICAL line through what x equals
• Example x= 3
• y=____ is a HORIZONTAL line through what y equals
• Example y= -5
Reflecting objects
Reflections over a Horizontal/Vertical line
PRETTY STRAIGHT FORWARD…. COUNT HOW FAR EACH POINT IS FROM THE LINE, THEN COUNT THE SAME DISTANCE AWAY…. EASY
Now how to reflect an object• First always look at the line you are reflecting an object over and draw
that line of the graph.
• Reflect over the x-axis
Think as if you were folding the paper and this line and the
object was wet paint.. Where would it end up?
OYO- Student volunteer/told
You reflect the point (-3,4) over the line y=1. Where does your reflected point land?

1.3 DAY 1
REFLECTIONS DAY 2TODAY I WILL UNDERSTAND HOW TO REFLECT AN OBJECT OVER A LINE
WITH A SLOPE OF 1 OR -1
Remember how to graph….
• Y=4 x=3
Remember how to graph…

Using Patty paper, reflect the image over the line y=x
•Can you come up with a way to reflect over y=x without patty paper?
•Double check your ideas by using patty paper.
Reflections over a DIAGONAL “x=y” lineSame rules apply…..but now we count diagonally
Reflections over a DIAGONAL “x=y” lineSame rules apply…..but now we count diagonally
OYO- 2 minsReflect over y=-x
If a Line of reflection goes through the object
Reflections are SIMPLE just think about folding the object over the line of reflection and where the points will end up after you fold the graph.
