peaceful demonstration took place at the offices of the Thaba Chweu municipality on Thursday. AThe Thaba Chweu Civic Coalition protested
against corruption, amongst other issues that are very urgent. They did not hand over the memorandum of their issues to TCM, but send it directly to Pravin Gordhan, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Highlands Panorama News spoke the Thaba Chweu Civic Coal i t ion Commander in Chief, Mr Joel Ledwaba. “Issues named in the memorandum are extreme corruption in TCM, the demand to reinstate former Municipal Manager Mr Jomo Mnisi and address the alleged corruption of the political party in charge. There is a lot of corruption in high places but we have
the heart of the people within us. We can't stand for this any longer,” said Mr Ledwaba.Mr Ledwaba also alleged that politicians interfere with the administration of TCM and that the administrators need to be left alone to do their work. According to him it is not only on local level but on provincial and national level that the corruption is taking over. Another issue that the Thaba Chweu Civic Coalition raised is the 91ha of land below Mashishing (as you drive towards Mashishing on your left hand side). The protestors demand that the land must be readdressed and the houses finished.The community struggles with basic services
like electricity on a daily basis. The Civic Coalition asked Minister Pravin Gordhan to appoint a forensic investigation. They said that TCM’s electricity is the most expensive in the world. The billing system is illegal and pensioners can’t afford the electricity with the pension grant they receive. The memorandum to Minister Gordhan stated that the Thaba Chweu Civic Coalition wants feedback within two weeks. Amongst other statements, he warned TCM that the people won’t take it lightly if their list of demands is not met.Michelle Boshoff

With expected traffic volumes increasing during the forthcoming Festive Season and school holidays, the recently unveiled Nyamsoro (Automated Number Plate Recognition vehicles) will go a long way towards assisting law enforcement officers to bring mischievous drivers to book. This is according to MEC for Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe who lauded the officers for bringing to book 502 motorists in October for failing to pay their outstanding traffic fines. The vehicles were instrumental in most operations that were conducted across the province.Warrants of arrests were executed and drivers of heavy motor vehicles (HMV's) were the most offenders followed by sedan drivers as well as light delivery vehicles (LDV's). The officers further arrested 58 more drivers for drunk driving, excessive speeding, overloading, reckless and negligent driving among others. These arrests were made during day to day operations by the provincial traffic

officers.In the same month, traffic officers also issued 26 772 fines to motorists for different violations. Out of all the fines issued, 741 were issued to motorists who did not have driving licenses and 944 to those who were not in possession of their licenses. 1 367 Fines were also issued to motorists who were overtaking on barrier lines while 4 415 were fines issued for speeding.“We are doing our best to ensure that motorists who ignore the call to take road safety seriously are dealt with accordingly. As we approach the Festive Season, our traffic officers will be in all corners of the province to ensure the safety of all our road users,” said Shongwe.The MEC has again called for increased levels of vigilance on the part of motorists in order to save lives on the road. He said road safety remains everybody's responsibility and it is not only law enforcement officers who should ensure that there is general compliance with the rules of the road.

The fire at the Mayors office in Thaba Chweu
caused havoc two weeks ago.
There was a lot of speculation about the
cause of the fire. But one thing is certain, the
damage was severe and will amount to hundreds
of thousands of rand. On Tuesday the Thaba
Chweu Municipality confirmed that there is
still an ongoing investigation.
Thus, the jury is still out on the cause and motive
behind the fire.

Die “boobies” is vals, die oogwimpers is vals, die hare is vals, die naels is vals en selfs die pêrels om die nek is vals. Die sonbruin vel op die strand is “gespraypaint”. Waar jy vat is dit “plestiek”.En dit is alles OK. Nee sies, een valsheid lei tot die ander en gou is dit die nuwe norm. Dit is hoekom dinge is soos dit is. Waar is die dae toe die enigste valsheid was wat ’n vrou so af en toe in die slaapkamer gepleeg het, om die man goed te laat voel!Dié wêreld is regtig op pad hel toe.

Haar digbundel ‘Whispers of a Soul’ is in Junie vrygestel. “Dit is vir my verblydend om te sien dat die verkope goed doen in Engeland - dis iets wat ek nooit verwag het nie. Die bundel is ook goed ontvang in Suid-Afrika. Ek is baie dankbaar,” het sy gesê. Sy is oorspronklik van Vryheid en het op 16 na Lydenburg getrek. Chantal het ’n drie-jarige seuntjie Ayden. Haar familie e n v r i e n d e h e t h a a r ongelooflik ondersteun met die bundel (Pieter Broodryk het dit geborg). Kruger Lowveld Tourism (KLT) in association with the Hazyview Chamber of Business and Tourism (HCBT) takes action to curb corruption amongst traffic officers
In the light of the recent sudden increase in cases of roadside bribery and extortion, especially where affecting tourists, steps have been taken to advise the public on the correct line to pursue when faced with a corrupt traffic officer or, in more extreme cases, when faced with threatening behaviour by traffic officials.Corrupt activity by traffic officers is widespread around Hoedspruit, Acornhoek, Bushbuckridge, Hazyview, Sabie and Graskop and particularly prevalent on the R40 between Hazyview and Hoedspruit, and to a slightly lesser extent on the R537 around Sabie, the R532 between Sabie and Graskop, the R533 between Graskop and Bushbuckridge and the R535 between Graskop and Hazyview.HCBT took the lead by appointing the region's first liaison officer, with an office within the police station and resourced and supported to step in and assist tourists with any crime-related issues. “It has been a pioneering step”, says Chris Harvie of HCBT, “but one that has paid dividends for tourism in the region from day one. Hazyview is a much better place for it.” Member establishments have all agreed to take the precaution of briefing all their arriving guests on the illegality of paying cash to any official. Once this
information had been broadcast more widely and tourists began to report back on their experiences more readily, it became clear to how great an extent the corruption had spread. Numerous cases have been reported every day and it was obvious that a more concentrated campaign was necessary.Under the auspices of and funded by Kruger Lowveld Tourism it was decided to print and distribute cards through our wide membership network, informing tourists of how to deal with corrupt traffic officials, irrespective of whether traffic infringements were real or fictitious. The card reads:It is strictly illegal to pay cash to a traffic officer or any other official on the roadside. Legitimate fines should be paid at a police station or magistrate's court only, where a receipt must be issued. Road tolls, where applicable, must be paid at official toll plazas only. Should you have any problems or doubts, please present this card to the officer and/or call the following number immediately..Telephone numbers include South African Police Services (dedicated contact) and a local contact of the establishment where guests are staying or the car hire company from which a vehicle has been rented. An e-flyer with the same information has also been designed to forward to all inbound tour operators so that they can insert this into itinerary packs for self-drive visitors and provide coach drivers/guides with the same, in the event of being approached by a
corrupt traffic official.Kruger Lowveld aims to proceed with this pilot project for three months and to distribute the cards in Hazyview, Graskop, Sabie, Hoedpsruit, the Timbavati and the Sabi-Sand. It is anticipated that the initiative will go a long way to reducing the amount of corruption on the roadsides. Any attempts at bribery and extortion will be reported immediately to SAPS and corrupt traffic officers will be disciplined and, where applicable, dismissed.Lisa Sheard, Chairperson of Kruger Lowveld Tourism praises the assistance received from the South African Police Services (SAPS) in the regard. “We have had swift, efficient and meaningful buy-in from the SAPS to the extent that they have allocated a dedicated, senior SAPS member to this initiative. This also confirms that the authorities are taking tourist safety and security seriously.” South African Tourism Services Association (SATSA) has been fully informed of this process as it has unfolded. David Frost, SATSA CEO, has heralded this anti-corruption initiative as “ground-breaking and testament to the energy of the tourism industry!”

Sy het haar vertoning Pêrelvrou na Lydenburg gebring ten bate van die Dwergieland Kleuterskool.Die gasvrouens van die tafels het ongelooflike inisiatief gebruik en die tafels kreatief in ’n ‘vintage’ styl getooi. Die een tafel was mooier as die ander. So ’n damesoggend gee weer pitkos vir die siel - al het mens nie altyd geweet jy het dit nodig nie.Sy het saam met haar motiveringsboodskap baie oor haar persoonlike lewe gedeel, ou gunstelinge soos Jantjie gesing en haar vertoning vol humor gehou.
Haar pragtige lied Pêrels het verwoord wat sy na al haar jare in die musiekbedryf besef het - en dat sy ook harde bene moes kou om vandag nog relevant en een van die gunstelinge onder Afrikaanse kunstenaars te wees. ~ Michelle Boshoff

We would like to thank all the stakeholders who participated in the environmental authorisation and stakeholder engagement process for the Der Brochen Project (Der Brochen) during the scoping phase from January to July 2014. The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the FSR and plan of study have been evaluated and accepted by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) on 3 September 2014 and the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) on 23 October 2014 and to provide stakeholders with a progress update regarding one of the key aspects of the Der Brochen Project, namely the Mareesburg Tailings Storage Facility (TSF).Progress update on Mareesburg TSF Stakeholders were informed during the scoping phase that Der Brochen is consolidating all previously submitted Environmental Management Programmes (EMPs) into a single aligned document. In addition to the alignment, Der Brochen intends undertaking additional activities that have not been authorised in existing EMPs, which include:· Two open pits; (north and south pit);· The raising of the existing Helena TSF;· A co-disposal facility (tailings disposal with a rock embankment in the north pit); and· An increase in the footprint of the previously approved Mareesburg TSF and associated infrastructure.The Mareesburg TSF footprint area, as anticipated at the conceptual stage of the project in 2001, has had to be enlarged based on the current pre-feasibility level of information. This information has become available from recent designs and a better understanding of future mine production
requirements and h e n c e t a i l i n g s d i s p o s a l requirements.The footprint will be enlarged by 50ha t h a n w h a t w a s indicated in the Final Scoping Report.Area depicted in F i n a l S c o p i n g Report: 104haNew enlarged area: 150haT h e m a x i m u m operational life of the Mareesburg TSF b a s e d o n 2 5 0 k t / m o n t h , i s approximately 40 years.Should the monthly production of tailings increase, the life of t h e T S F w i l l decrease, but in this case the footprint area will not need to be increased.
Please note that all necessary specialists have been informed of the increase in the footprint area of the Mareesburg TSF, and have been requested to update their specialist reports accordingly. The increased area will be reflected in the Draft E n v i r o n m e n t a l I m p a c t A s s e s s m e n t / E n v i r o n m e n t a l ManagementProgramme (EIA/EMP) Report.Next steps in the Environmental Authorisation process:Der Brochen may now commence with the Impact Assessment Phase of the environmental authorisation process as per regulation R543 30(1) (a) of the National Environmental Management Act (Act No. 107 of 1998) (NEMA). Buying a new car is like getting into a new relationship. Things can get serious very quickly, writes Masood Boomgaard.The other day I decided to make one of the biggest decisions of my life. No, I didn’t decide to get married, I decided it was time to buy a new car. It was something I had been putting off for some time, but couldn’t put off any longer as the gearbox on my trusted wagon of 10 years decided to give in. I saw this as a sign that a change was needed. Also, my “trusted” mechanic pointed out to me that the head gasket needed to be repaired. I have no idea what a head gasket is, but I’m pretty sure it’s something mechanics have made up to scare us or slap us with a big bill.And so the hunt began for a new car. And when I say “new” car, I don’t just mean something different that I could find on Gumtree for under R35 000. I’m talking about something from a proper dealership. I wanted to experience that new car smell and peace of mind motoring. For too long I had been bargain hunting in the classifieds, meeting dodgy characters in the evening at service stations under bad lighting where dents, dings and scratches were easily concealed. I was tired of inheriting other people’s problems through my numerous “voetstoots” purchases.Buying a new car is like finding the right partner. If you’re lucky you might know within moments that you’ve found the right car, but generally it involves a lot of looking, hours online or spending your lunch breaks or Saturdays going from showroom to showroom. At most showrooms you feel welcome right away. It’s a bad economy right now so the sales people will do anything to charm you and will give you loads of attention. Of course there’s a fine line between being charming and being overbearing. I don’t think car salesmen are really taught the difference because they have a tendency to become really clingy really
quickly.It all starts out quite nicely. “Hi, I’m Peter,” the salesman introduces himself with a smile.You stroll around the showroom floor, making small talk while looking at the different models. He asks you about your preferences and then together you pick out a car.Next you decide to take your interest in this developing relationship a little further: you’re now sitting in the car. You’re at second base. You’re running your hands over the steering wheel and caressing the leather. “That feels great, doesn’t it,” Peter remarks with a smile. You’re impressed, but not sure if you want things to progress to the next level just yet. So you quickly end the encounter and promise to return soon.The next time you see Peter, at the weekend, you’re taking your relationship to the next level – he lets you test drive the car. At first you’re nervous, things start out a bit awkwardly, but of course Peter is there to help you guide it into gear. Before you know it you’re in sixth gear, flying down the highway, thrashing it around bends, tearing up the back roads with Peter egging you on. “Push it, push it!” he shouts. It’s the most exhilarating test drive you’ve ever had. The kind of test drive so good that you have to light up a cigarette after. And now you’re back at the dealership, sitting in the car, enjoying a quiet moment.“So how was it?” Peter asks.“It was amazing,” you say.There’s a pause before he responds with, “So, shall we get the finance application started?”You’re a little taken aback because things have moved rather quickly. You stutter through an excuse.“Er, let’s just hang on for a minute. I, er, just need to think about it for a bit. I like the car, but I just need to think… er… I’ll call you!”Of course you don’t call.So you receive a call from your salesman two days later. “Hi, it’s Peter from Audi Centre, was just thinking about you. That test drive was awesome the other day, I know you enjoyed it too. When am I seeing you again at the dealership?”So you give him some spiel about being busy with work and meetings, basically pulling out every excuse you can think of, because the truth is you’re not ready to commit to the car.Then you start avoiding the calls, which leads Peter to call from a private number. More excuses. You start dodging the private numbers, so he starts leaving voicemails.
“Hey it’s me, Peter, from Audi Centre. Hope you’re good. I remember you said you will be at the mall on Saturday. Well I’m at the mall and I don’t see you. Call me.”Then it gets creepier.“Hey it’s Peter. I know BMW is having an open day today. Hope you’re not there. I’ll find out where you live and kill you if you are! Ha ha! Just kidding. Call me.”Finally you get to that point where you realise you have to
break up with your salesman. You go down to the dealership and sit him down.“Listen Peter, I really like the car, I do,” you start delicately, “but I’m just not ready for a car right now. It’s a huge commitment and I’m kind of focusing on my career right now. Someday, someone will buy that car and love it the way it deserves to be loved. I’m just not ready. It’s me, not you.”At that point Peter’s eyes start to well up.“I just need to know one thing,” he responds. “Is there another car you’re interested in?” Sunday Tribune / iol.motoring

THE Renault Oroch concept vehicle, just unveiled at the Sao Paulo motor show, opens up an interesting range of possibilities and one of them is rather obvious.What if the company suddenly decided to launch a double cab bakkie version of the Renault / Dacia Duster? Think about it - the Duster SUV strikes a decent balance between car-like comfort and off-road ruggedness and a unibody bakkie spin-off could neatly plug a gap between compact unibody utes like the Chevrolet Ute and Nissan NP200 and the traditional ladder-frame hulks that are becoming so expensive nowadays.A bakkie version of the Duster has been flying around the rumour mill for a long time now and there are even a few single cab Dusters cruising around Europe, although these coach-built units are part of a special project created for OMV Petrom.A NISSAN VERSION?But speaking of Nissan's little ute, we come to yet another possibility. Nissan has yet to announce anything about the future of the SA-only NP200, but given that the current one is based on a Renault / Dacia Logan bakkie, surely it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for Nissan SA to create a replacement based on a Duster bakkie? Poach the front-end panels from the Duster-based Nissan Terrano and we're really styling.Perhaps we're getting a bit carried away here as this Oroch concept has yet to be green-lighted for production, although the implication is certainly there, given that Renault plans to launch two pick-up models in South America some time in the future.Penned at Renault's Latin America design centre, the Oroch intends to combine the practicality of a five-seat pick-up with the robust looks of a “true SUV.”The concept features two rear-mounted cameras (set at 80 and 140-degree angles) to capture “sporting moments” and there's a screen inside that can display the images in real time. The cabin also boasts 'cover carving' seats that have an additional layer of foam to withstand intensive use.But to the yay or nay: would you like to see this ute on our streets?iol motoringED: I would.
