Court A at the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court was filled to capacity with family members of the accused in the Vuvani arson cases, interested parties (including leaders of the Malamulele protests), and a large contingent of police at-tending.

Shining in their absence were members of the ProMakhado Task Team, who would have come on previous occassions to show solidarity.

This was during the appearance of 11 alleged arsonists and perpetrators of violence in the Vuwani area. At the same time, six others were appearing in Thohoyandou for similar offences that were committed in the area under Thohoyandou’s jurisdiction.

The accused at Malamulele did not utter a word during their appearance. Only their legal representative, Mr Vhutshilo Nange, urged the court to release his clients on bail, saying they were facing Schedule One offences, which do not need formal bail applications, and that made them good candidates for bail. The state disagreed, saying that the nature of the offences was severe and that investigators needed more time to do their investigations.

The state said they were facing serious charges, where many schools were burnt down and trucks belonging to the government, worth more than a million rand, and other properties were set alight. Presiding magistrate Goodwin Ntsane said that the state succeeded in advancing reasons for not granting bail. “This case is still very new. It is fresh like blood and it being Schedule One offence should

not be an automatic passport to bail. These people did not burn grass, but many schools, more than 20 other properties were torched, trucks and graders belonging to public works were also damaged. Looking at the seriousness of the cases, investigations should also be given a chance,” he said.

He postponed the matter to 16 May 2016 for further investigations. The accused, whose ages range from 20 to 50, will remain in custody. The denial of bail was not well received by family members who were at the court.

Tovhowani Davhana of Vuwani, whose younger brother Rodney was arrested along with three others in connection with the alleged burning of trucks and graders in Vuwani, said it was not fair for the court not to grant them bail after they had spent so many days in custody. “They have been in custody since Wednesday and we do not even know why they were arrested. We had hoped that they would be granted bail today. We are very dissappointed but we will have to wait until their next appearance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of State Security David Mahlobo has issued a stern warning that all those involved in fanning violence in Vuwani would be arrested. “Whether it be a politician, business

Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba briefs the media outside the court.

people or traditional leaders involved in this violence, we will hunt you down and arrest you,” he said. Premier Stan Mathabatha also warned that more arrests were eminent, saying the number of those arrested was not yet even a quarter of those to be arrested.

It was also reported that, in a bid to resolve the ongoing unrest in the Vuwani and Mashau areas,

King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana and senior traditional leaders met with Pres Jacob Zuma at Luthuli House on Monday.

Af t e r t he even t , Mphephu said Pres Zuma promised to engage ministers and government officials “to start to roll out awareness campaigns in Vuwani and surrounding areas.” The king added

that the campaign would be aimed at educating residents about the benefits of establishing a new municipality. He added that they all wanted that learning and teaching should continue uninterrupted. Mphephu called for calmness and urged the community to fight against criminal elements.

A number of stakeholder meetings and different communities are underway in the troubletorn area

in an attempt to quell the violence and also bring calm to the area.

Thohoyandou cluster spokesperson Maj Mashudu Malelo has urged communities to guard key points such as schools, clinics and other state properties jealously as they are for their own use. “We urge all communities to desist from blockading roads as it delays police from attending incidents where incidents are reported,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that more arrests were imminent.

The arrest of the accused is the sequel to incidents that started a fortnight ago, when residents lost a case they had against the demarcation board to prevent their incorporation into a new municipality for Malamulele. Residents had since decided on a complete shutdown to show their dissatisfaction and went on the rampage, burning more than 20 schools, government vehicles, graders, a satellite police station, tribal offices and other property.

Meanwhile, the Vhembe District, known for consistently producing topquality results, has been declared a disaster area, following the torching of nearly 50 schools in the area. The highest number of schools that were torched are in the Vuwani area, with others in Malamulele. According to Education Minister Angie Motsheka, it costs about R30 million to build a school, so the total cost of building new schools is estimated to be more than R500 million rand.

Traffic was held up again on Tuesday, following yet another crash on the corner of Songozwi and Grobler Street in Louis Trichardt. A bus and a bakkie, belonging to the Department of Correctional Services, were invloved in the accident. Rescue workers attending the scene said the reason for the accident was the same old story - people not adhering to the red traffic light. Nobody was seriously injured, and local police have indicated that they are investigating a case of reckless or negligent driving. This crossing has seen many an accident, almost on a monthly basis, over the years.

012 543 9093 of per epos by [email protected].

A driver employed at the Makhado Municipali-ty, Mr Freddy Khantshi, blames his co-workers for an incident that left his car damaged at his home a fortnight ago.

The municipal workers have been on a goslow strike for nearly four weeks. Workers have convened regular meetings to find a resolution to the issue of “benchmarking of salaries process”. It was apparently during one of these meetings that Khantshi stood up and voiced his opinion.

“The municipality was offering workers R15 000 each, but other workers were not happy about that,” he said. “I begged their understanding and explained that that amount was better than nothing.”

Khantshi said that he had explained that he had listened to a speech by the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Makoma Grace Makhurupetje, when she was addressing people in Mogalakwena Municipality.

“The MEC said that the benchmarking of employees’ salaries would only be done across municipalities in the 2018/2019 financial year for the good of municipal workers. So, when the local municipality offered workers R15 000, I thought it was good that we should consider accepting it and wait for 2018.”

He stated that some workers, who spoke in hushed tones, said that they would burn his property because he was betraying the workers’ union. “I was well informed about the workers who planned to burn my property, but I just took it as a joke

because I voiced my opinion in a public space,” he said. “I had no intention to betray any person, and neither did I do anything wrong.”

On Friday night, Khantshi was awakened by a strange sound and when he peeped out through the window, he saw a big fire in his yard. He got out of bed and rushed out.

“My car was on fire,” he said. “I rushed out of the yard and looked down the street. I saw someone whom I knew – a colleague in fact – running down the road.”

He ran back into his yard and started extinguishing the fire. Soon he heard the sound of a speeding car and rushed outside to investigate. “It was the car of the very man whom I had just seen running down the road,” he said.

He explained that something like a hosepipe had been inserted through a hole drilled along the water pipeline and connected to his car. “That pipe was infused with flammable liquids, so that whoever did this cruel thing had done it from outside the yard,” he said. “This is quite disturbing, though.”

The South African Municipal Workers Union’s chairperson, Mr Lawrence Murovhi, condemned the malicious damage of Khantshi’s property. “At this stage we need to allow the police to do their job,” he said. “However, if ever by any chance our members are behind this evil act, we surely do not support this kind of action.”

The spokesperson for the Makhado SAPS cluster, W/O Kedibone Mabatha, confirmed that the police had opened a case of malicious damage to property. “We are investigation this case and we hope to make an arrest soon,” he said.

Waterval-born popular musician Clement “Clemour” Ngobeni went through to the Top-12 stage of M-Net’s TV competition, The Voice South Africa, on Sunday night, but it became clear that he will have to do something excep-tional to edge out his competitors.

Clemour was saved by the votes of his dedicated fans last week. He ousted the popular and highly talented Prime Zulu, but still had to contend with Richard Stirton and Francis Bowers. Richard was the one who received the nod from coach Kahn Morbee, which means that it’s up to Clemour and Francis’s fans to decide their fate in the competition.

On Sunday night, Clemour made a very brave and bold move to render his own version of the popular awardwinning English singer Adele’s Rolling in the deep. The star from Limpopo indicated that he was happy with his performance, even though he was under a lot of pressure and nervous. “You can just imagine the pressure that came with waiting for the results and performing five or less minutes later,” said Clemour.

Clemour said that he was grateful for the support that he had received so far from everyone who had voted for him. “Please, please use the various ways to vote for me and support my dream, because only you can make my dream a reality,” he said.

The judges applauded Clemour for his ability to

always bring in the element of surprise whenever he is on stage and encouraged him to work harder on technical difficulties, such as the pronunciation of words.

The voting ends on Thursday, 12 May, at 22:00.

There are many ways in which people can promote their businesses. They can advertise it on billboards, on radio, on television, on the internet or they can print thousands of pamphlets and dump it all over town.

At the end it is a responsible choice.

Newspaper advertising is highly effective way of bringing a message across. It is also a way in which advertisers sponsor local news and by doing so create more informed and healthier communities.

When last did you complain about bad service to a billboard?

When last did you ask a billboard when the municipal strike will end?

When last did you see a picture of local people celebrating their achievements on a billboard?

Misdaadvoorkoming

Venter self beskik oor ‘n paar eksemplare. Hy kan geskakel word by tel. 083 444 7672.

In Memoriam

The upcoming fete at Ridgeway College in Louis Trichardt will provide budding entrepreneurs and established businesses alike with the oppor-tunity to showcase their wares and services. It will take place on 27 and 28 May.

Although the aim of the fete is to generate funds for the college and the independent school, the price of R300 per stall over the two days of the fete will afford artisans, artists and craftspeople of the area the ideal opportunity to gain access to a wider target market.

The only exception in this regard is the provision of certain food products, since the college itself will be responsible for doughnuts, boerewors in a roll or with pap, Indian cuisine, various curried meals, and cold drinks. A beer tent will be run by the Round Table and a tea garden will cater for those who wish to sit and relax and have something to eat and drink while listening to the live entertainment.

Aspirant singers will have the opportunity to make use of the open mike to show what they are capable of. The fete also promises loads of entertainment for the young ones. A minifunfair will pro vide plenty of excitement, with a number of rides as well as a haunted house for the brave and face painting for the adventurous. For the adults and the young at heart, there will be arcade games,

pillow fights, sponge throwing, a slingshot competition, a tombola stall and a tugofwar competition. Local businesses are invited to enter teams for the latter event at a cost of R50 per team.

Dads are invited to visit the car exhibition provided by local dealerships, while moms shop around at the clothing and bricabrac stalls.

On Friday morning, between 09:00 and 12:00, all local nursery schools are invited to bring the children to the fete, free of charge. Those interested can contact Doret or Charmaine at the school for more information. Entrance at the gates is R20 per person. Dial the school at 015 161 0210 to book a stall or for more information.

Religious leaders take stand against violenceReligious leaders, teachers, learner bodies and other stakeholders united over the past week in an effort to call for calm and restore sanity in the Vuwani area.

On 8 May, the Vhembe Pastors Forum took a decision to preach a common sermon on Sunday, denouncing the destruction and looting of school property and the disruption of schooling in Vuwani.

The decision was taken during a crisis meeting held in Louis Trichardt by the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), SADTU, Professional Teachers Union (PEU), Combined Teacher Unions (CUT), Autonomous Teacher Unions (ATU), National Association of School Governing Bodies, COSAS and the Vhembe Pastors Forum to restore, protect and promote learning and teaching in Vuwani.

“We denounce the destruction and looting of school property and the disruption of schooling. If we do not act, history will judge us harshly,” said forum spokesperson Reverent Dean Alunamutwe Rannditsheni in a combined press release for all the stakeholders.

Lamenting the deplorable situation, Khulekani Skosana of COSAS said: “Every time there are

service delivery protests in the country, parents and adults turn learners into collateral damage when they prevent them from attending classes.” This, Skosana said, was always the case even when the grievances in question were unrelated to schooling and education but ended up impacting the learners negatively. “Our constituency is under siege. The burning of schools is tantamount to destroying our future,” Skosana said.

Over the next few days, the collective will be in discussion with the government to explore ways in which the lost school days can be recouped. Part of the proposed solutions will entail organising study camps which, with guaranteed state security, will secure the safety of learners, and making use of church facilities and underutilised government facilities to continue teaching the children.

“We are ready to go back to the classroom and ensure that children recoup the number of school days they have lost. Once safety and normalcy have been restored to the area, we will go the extra mile,” said SADTU’s provincial secretary, Mathome Raphasha. Teacher unions such as the PEU, CUT and ATU are also fully behind the call

to go back to the classroom to gain back the lost school days.

Similarly, the collective resolved that parents must release their children to continue preparing for their future. “Parents must not hinder learning and teaching,” the collective said. Closing the meeting, NECT CEO Godwin Khosa said: “Parents, teachers, learners, traditional and religious leaders should stand up for the restoration of learning and teaching, and the safety of the learners.”

As part of its campaign to restore and promote learning and teaching, the collective decided to popularise #TheBurningofSchoolsMustFall. Church leaders in the area have also organised a prayer meeting to be held on 11 May at Levubu Primary school at 10:00.

DIE 2016 TOYOTA FORTUNER IS HIER!

10 ZOUTPANSBERGER, 13 MAY 2016

Daar is alternatiewe.

Agricultural News

The Southern African Maca-damia Growers’ Association (SAMAC) recently completed a round of data collection with updated crop forecasts from all handlers of macadamia nuts.

“The updated forecast for the 2016 season is approximately 39 000 tonnes of nut in shell (NIS; measured at 1.5% kernel moisture content). This is approximately 15% lower than the 2015 crop of 46 000 t NIS, and down on the initial 2016 forecast of 43 000t,” said SAMAC in ‘n press release.

According to SAMAC, South African handlers have revised their forecasts and all indications are that the drought has affected the industry more severely than initially anticipated. Many role players in the industry have indicated a 20% decline in production, compared to the 2015 season, and reports of up to 50% lower production in some areas.

The reason for the lower expected volumes, said SAMAC chairman Walter Giuricich, could be attributed to higher nut drop and the fact that many nuts are smaller than usual with thicker shells, due to the hot and dry

weather conditions. Consequently, lower kernelrecovery rates are being achieved and much lower volumes of kernel can be expected from the South African crop. These factors, as well as high rates of insect damage, most notably late stink bug, will also negatively affect the quantities of kernel being produced and sold in the international market.

“There is a concern that, should the current dry weather conditions prevail, the 2017 crop will also most likely be affected, as dry conditions will not be conducive to achieving good pollination rates,” said SAMAC.

South African singer Jakkie Louw visited Louis Trichardt the past week for the first time in eight years. He entertained residents at the invitation of the girls of Ladies Circle 4 as part of a charity fundraiser. “He is a gentleman and an amazing person on and off the stage,” said the girls from Ladies Circle 4, who also thanked everyone who had bought tickets for Jakkie’s concert, as well as their sponsors: Grasdak Guest House, PD Otto Elektries, Soutpansberg Koelkamers, Vleispot, ISIS Décor, Laerskool Louis Trichardt and Jacques Mouton for the opening act. “Last but not least, thank you Round Table 66 and the 41ers for the cash bar,” said the girls. Pictured here are in front, from left to right, Angelique Hains, Diane Otto, Riana Otto, Christa Otto, Jean-Marie Otto, Jakkie Louw, Ciscka Jansen van Vuuren, Gerda Nagel, Andrew Pienaar en Cherise Gamble.

Triegie-leeus brul saam in stryd teen kanker

Mrs Gloria Nekhavhambe addresses the people on the use of a tractor.

Campaign focused on farming and environment

By Mbulaheni Ridovhona

The Department of Agriculture and Rural De-velopment (DARD) hosted its annual farming awareness campaign last Friday at the Tok Barnard farm near Louis Trichardt.

The theme of the awareness campaign was “conservation agriculture as a strategy to mitigate climate change.”

The campaign was launched in 2014 by DARD. This is the first time that the event has been hosted in the Makhado Municipality.

Mrs Gloria Nekhavhambe, a delegate from DARD, said that it would take some time for the awareness campaign to bear fruit, because the concept of Conservation Agriculture (CA) was still new and many people did not know about it.

Mr Michael Netshivhodza explained that CA aims to achieve sustainable and profitable agriculture by promoting three principles: minimum soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and crop rotation.

Netshivhodza said that the introduction of minimum soil disturbance or no tillage was to curb this negative impact on the soil and also to improve the quality of soil structure needed for plant growth without disturbing it. He added that permanent soil cover served as a layer on the soil surface and acted as mulch for the soil which had not been tilled or had minimum tillage. “The soil layer is protected from the physical impact of rain and wind, but it also stabilizes the soil moisture and temperature in the surface layers,” he said.

He said that diversified crop rotation promoted a healthy living soil. These practices decreased the need for pesticides and herbicides, controlled offsite pollution, and enhanced biodiversity. “The application of a diversified crop rotation increases the overall productivity of the cropping system and, as such, also the longterm profitability, compared to monocropping of economically attractive cash crops, which in the long term, always proves not sustainable,” he added.

Mr Edward Tshikumbane, a member of the Marandela Communal Property Association in which Tok Barnard’s farm operates, said that farming in the communities these days was not always taken seriously. He also added that farming was the backbone of life.Mr Tok Barnard delivers a speech at the event.

More than 300 students from various schools in the Botlokwa (Matoks) community, particularly Grade 12s with maths and science as subjects, attended a career day on 30 April to explore various career opportunities. The event was organised by the Botlokwa Investing in Youth Organization. Institutions who provided career guidance included UNISA, UJ, Transnet, UP, SAMSA, Molemole Municipality, UNIVEN, Ekurhuleni College, Capricorn FET, ABSA Bank and the South African Air Force (SAAF).

Ja, so getrou is God dan – Isak lewe.

“Daise ... Wat gaan aan?”

Dan is daar skielik ‘n man se stem: “Kathy, dis Jacobus.

“Ek pak net ‘n paar goedjies. My kar is vol petrol. Ek ry dadelik.”

“Dankie, Kathy. Daisy is buite haarself.”

“Waar is Daisy?” wil Kathy dadelik weet.“In haar kamer, Kath.

Daar is skaars lig in Daisy se kamer. Kathy gaan lê styf teen haar vriendin en sit haar arm om Daisy se lyf. Lank is daar net stilte.

“My liefste vriendin.

“Kath, asseblief! Bernard is dood.

“Ek is swanger.”

Mr Willie Agenbacht, chairperson of the Gister-se-Jeugklub (Yesterday’s Youth Club), sent in the following letter, directed to the Makhado municipal manager:

We are directing this letter to you to bring an important

matter to your attention.Although GisterseJeugklub may

not represent a signifi cant portion of the residents of Louis Trichardt and surroundings, we feel that the thoughts we will express will represent the thinking of more than just a signifi cant portion of inhabitants to whom services are provided.

Some of us have not been in town for quite so many years, but some of us have spent a great deal of our working careers and all of our retirement here. Some of us were even born here. Whatever the case may be, we have always been proud of our town and, where possible, we have done our part to enhance the appearance of our environment. Not even to mention the fact that we have always paid our municipal accounts, which, I think, is something that cannot be said of all residents.

As far as scenery is concerned,

we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Consequently, we draw visitors in the form of friends and relatives from various remote areas. We take these people out to see all the lovely places and other attractions, which they rave about. But, oh my word! When we get back into town, we are welcomed by hole upon hole in the streets! Visitors do not rave about that! The perception has always been that when a driver keeps swerving from left to right on the road, he is probably drunk. In Louis Trichardt the standing joke is that if someone drives straight, he is certainly drunk, because only a drunken person would be prepared to do that to a vehicle.

Furthermore, we have events like the Kremetart Cycle Tour and others coming up, which will again draw visitors from all over the country. We are sure that if you lodge an active repair campaign right away, by the time these events take place, the roads will be much less of an embarrassment to yourself and also us. We would prefer to be proud of our town, rather than to be embarrassed.

The Zoutpansberg Private Hospital in Louis Trichardt boasted one Mother’s Day baby on 8 May. Pictured is proud mom Mushiana with baby Thindulo Orinea Sigwavhulimu. Little Orinea weighed 3.08kg at birth and was delivered by Dr Makulana at 23:55. With mom and baby is registered nurse and midwife Sr Rabali. Photo supplied.

083 660 2472 (Allan Odendaal).

In elke kompetisie moet daar egter ‘n wenner wees.

‘n Groot

dankie gaan ook aan Vhavenda Bricks, Vhembe Ys, Cycle Centre, Molozi Trust, RMW Trust en Rondebosch Abattoir vir hulle ondersteuning.
