Re-shapingthe audiovisual scenesince 1983
Over more than three decades, the EUTELSAT HOT BIRD satellite neighbourhood at 13 degrees East has radically re-shaped the audiovisual scene in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. It has contributed significantly to creating a TV market where viewers can choose between hundreds of channels broadcast in dozens of languages.
The latest research by the Eutelsat TV Observatory shows that the HOT BIRD neighbourhood remains in pole position, standing at 138 million Direct-To-Home (DTH), cable and IP homes, up from 122 million in 2010. In the DTH market, the HOT BIRD market-leading pay-TV platforms and strong free-to-air line-up have driven steady expansion to 66 million homes in 2014 from 52 million in 2010. In Western Europe, the total audience of the HOT BIRD satellites has continued to expand, reaching 67 million homes in 2014, up from 62 million in 2010. The three co-located satellites bring together a unique combination of 660 encrypted pay-TV channels, more than 400 free-to-air channels, 8 premium platforms and over 170 High-Definition TV channels, broadcasting in 32 languages.
Direct-To-Home reception in beam centre is possible with antennae smaller than 70 cm, and with slightly larger antennas throughout Europe, North Africa and as far East as Moscow and Dubai
