13 Colonies Road Trip

Your class is studying the 13 colonies in Social Studies, and you’ve convinced your parents to take you on an epic road trip to visit some of them next summer! Planning road trip vacations is difficult, though, so they’ve said you have to design the budget and itinerary. They also gave you a few restrictions:

x They want to visit all three regions (the New England colonies, the southern colonies, and the middle colonies).

x They want to stay in each one a few days, so they want you to narrow your choices down to 4 of the colonies.

Your job is to choose your destinations, calculate the mileage for your trip, plan what you’ll do in each city, and make a budget! You will be using your knowledge of geography and math to help make decisions. Have fun, and bon voyage!

The 13 Colonies The original 13 colonies were spread throughout three regions: New England, the Middle, and the Southern colonies. New England: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island Middle (or Mid-Atlantic): Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania Southern: North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland

Use research to choose 4 of the colonies to visit, and then decide on family-friendly attractions to visit in each one. Remember that you’ll be visiting all three regions during your trip, so plan the best route between them!

Road Trip Budget Making a budget will help you keep track of expenses while you plan your road trip! Use the chart below to track the costs of gas and the attractions

you plan to visit.

**Hint: If your trip is too expensive, try finding colonies that are closer together, choose a rental car with better gas mileage, or choose attractions that are less expensive.

Show your work in the boxes below

Gas: **Include road trip mpg AND

miles to and from attractions! **See

next page to help you calculate mileage.**

Attractions: **Include

attraction prices for ALL members of your family at

each stop!

Road Trip Math You will need to use your math skills to solve the following road trip

problems!

Your parents want to know about how much your trip will cost, as well as a daily average. Use your budget to add up the total cost. Divide the total cost by the number of days your trip will last to find the daily average. Total Trip Cost: _____________________ Daily Average: ____________________

When budgeting for a trip, gas prices are important to consider! Add up all of your mileage (including colony to colony as well as to your chosen attractions and back!) Then, use the mpg for your rental car and average gas prices to figure out how much fuel you will need, and how much gas will cost for your trip. Total Mileage: _________________________ Total Gallons of gas needed: ___________ Total gas budget: ______________________

Your parents aren’t sure if you chose the best rental car for your trip. Compare the total gas prices for your chosen car with another rental choice. Why is yours the best choice? Our rental choice: ________________________ Total gas price: ____________________ Another rental choice: ____________________ Total gas price: ____________________ Why mine is the best choice:

Figure out how many days your trip will take. Plan to spend 2 days in each colony. Use your itinerary to help you! ** If your travel time between colonies lasts more than 6 hours, you will need to add an extra day to your trip. ** If your travel distance is more than 600 miles, you will need to add 2 extra days to your trip. ** You must start and end in Washington, DC ** Consider: 250 miles = around 4 hours of driving time ** Assume that you are traveling 60 miles per hour Total number of miles driven: ________________________ Number of days spent driving: _______________________ Number of days in colonies: _________________________ Total number of days for your trip: ____________________

Mapping Your Route Use the map to label each colony. Then, use an atlas or map website to find the cities you’ll be visiting. Label each one with a star and the name of the city. Draw the route you’ll take from city to city. Lightly color in each state/colony that you’ll be driving through during your road trip.
