The Squadron numbers – We are now at 795 canard members, not including spouses…in Canard Squadron III. So if your canard friends haven’t joined, get them in touch… If you notice you started receiving mailings after a hiatus, the only excuse Beagle has is the address section of Mozilla Thunderbird – I have an easy way to lose an address I should be mailing to – I run groups of about 30 people to avoid your many spam programs – so that means I’m sending out about 35 e-mails per mailing. IF YOU DON’T HEAR FROM ME ABOUT ONCE A MONTH – get in touch – Mozilla may have crossed you off the list…with this old fool trying to keep track.

FAA Developments: As part of the Sequestration threat by Government, the FAA has announced it will furlough 47,000 non management employees one or two days a month, eliminate midnight shifts at 60 towers, close 100 towers at some places with less than 150,000 operations or 10,000 commercial operations a year. (I have the 5 page list of threatened towers for those curious. Frankly, I enjoy uncontrolled fields a lot better than those with towers…it includes Santa Monica, Fullerton, and strangely Hawthorne which I think is a private tower…)

APRIL 2013:

Apr 9-14 2013 Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In Lakeland Linder Regional Airport (LAL) Lakeland, FL

www.Sun-N-Fun.org

April 14-19 2013: BAHAMAS BASH 2013 BAHAMAS BASH 2013

The 2013 spring Bahamas fly-in is set for April 14-19 at Fernandez Bay on Cat Island, landing at

New Bight (MYCB). A favorite of the group, it is sure to be a great getaway. We will depart Ft.

Pierce, Fl (KFPR) on April 14, the last day of Sun-n-Fun and fly direct MYCB. They have 100LL

fuel there and it is an Airport of Entry (AOE). Once again, we will have an arrival gathering and

the first drink is on the house! We will likely fly out Tuesday to Hawk’s Nest on the southern

end of the island (MYCH, 10 min flight) for some scuba, fishing or sightseeing adventure. We

also plan to do a fly out to San Salvador (MYSM, 20-30 min flight) on Wednesday to do some

exploring. As usual, these are just possibilities for those adventure minded souls but hanging

out on the beach at Fernandez is always a relaxing option. It’s YOUR vacation and the Rough

River theme of doing your own thing certainly applies for the Bahamas Bash! We will depart

Fernandez Bay on Friday the 19th to head back to Florida.

Beagle may lead a group on to the Turks & Caicos.

Flyin HISTORY: AZ Bunch reports Buckeye: Rick Reuland, is the group reporter: “The Buckeye event is a family oriented fair

highlighting aerospace displays and forums. There was only a limited amount of personal

aircraft display space, however 6 airplanes from the EZ group were there, including:

Hertzler, Lermer, Makarounis, Borom, Allison and Jamsek.

The free lunch for pre-registered fly-ins consisted of sandwiches and pizza. Balloon

rides, bi-plane rides, parachute jumps, flight simulators, R/C aircraft demos and high

speed fly-bys were featured throughout the day. If you brought young ones, bounce houses,

face painting, fire truck displays, K-9 demos and dance demos completed the fun. There

was a huge crowd, so this gathering was not for the faint of heart who do not like crowds

gathering around their planes.”

Reuland reports: “Gary Hertzler, John Makarounis, Jim Timm, Chuck Allison, Marc Borom,

Brian Scott and Richard Rivet were [at Kearny] to enjoy the usual good food. Calm winds

allowed all to land to the West which allows a back lit view of the runway and close

parking to the restaurant. A high overcast kept the temperatures a little lower than on

the previous few days.”

Nose Draggers:

Beagle’s curious about those who have and those who will have a nose gear up landing – Dave Viglierchio sent me a card Bill Allen has – presumably Bill’s private artwork…

And Beagle was thinking that it might be a little gentle chiding to have these in very small stickers to be worn proudly on our canopy rails…and encouragement for those who are new to it. Dave thinks this kind of thing should be reserved for proud accomplishments like shooting down enemy planes…your thoughts? The “No Tubes” and “No Mags” stickers are way too big for this honor...

Builder’s Help Desk:

Marc Zeitlin, of Tehachapi, has quit his day job and has joined my list of inspectors and will do pre-buy, yearly inspections and the like for the canard community. It takes quite a bit of work to float a full

time canard maintenance guy so keep him in mind. 978-502-5251(cell) [email protected]

I looked over the new Long EZ by Walter Hoffman who attended the Borrego flyin.

Page 7: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

He’s put in a very clean panel:

I’ve seen classy sun shades on Cozy aircraft, with a track down the center – but Walt has adapted it for the desert sun on his Long EZ – so much classier than the dark plastic stickon approach:

His friend Bob Bird has helped him add an adjustable intake for the cowl – he will make it cockpit adjustable soon too:

Page 8: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

And Walt has the most modern cowl outlet with tucked pipes:

He’s opened four cooling outlets on top of the four cylinders – I don’t know how much drag it adds and what speed penalty there may be with this – but both he and Bob Bird emphasized how very hot it is in the low desert when you climb out mid-summer.

Beagle learned that Buly Aliev, down in Florida, has adapted the RV baffle kit for the Cozy IV: I frankly don’t think they are any where near as pretty as the Berkut baffles I’ve been trying to get for people (I’m down to my last set (for O-320 and O-360) – and they have been made taller for Cozy IV use… But here are the details, the RV baffles are cheaper and come bent already:

As reported by Greg Andronaco: “Attached are some pics Buly sent me. Here is the link for their baffle kits:

http://vansaircraft.com/cgi-bin/store.cgi?ident=1360918969-236-663&browse=engines&product=engine-baffle

Basically [They come in] four sizes. One size for O-320 on RV 3&4, one size for O-360 on RV 3&4, one size

for O-320 RV 6 -> 9, one size for O-360 RV 6 -> 9. The cozy folks are using the larger 6 -> 9 version

depending on engine. Talked to tech support there this morning and the O-320 version will fit an O-290 albeit

some cutting around the conical mounts.

They come cut, bent, formed, ready to bolt on. Tractor versions of Lycomings use the baffles in between the

cylinders that come with the engine. Since the updraft canards have airflow in the opposite direction, one uses

the cozy plans versions of these. Have to make them yourself.”

[The Berkut laser cut baffles are not pre-bent or “formed” but have all the bolt holes lined up for the O-

320 and O-360…the overlap differs for the different cylinders, so no need for trimming that…Beagle]

Weight and Balance:

For those in the SoCal area, Clark Canedy has electronic scales at Chino airport.

Lighter than Stainless Steel Panel. Clark Canedy found a supplier who custom makes firewalls – his Cozy IV

panel was made for about $1000 – but he figures it is about 4 lbs lighter than the stainless steel he planned for

Page 9: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

the space. He put it over fiberfrax. The supplier is at 1-800-826-8417 and is North of Los Angeles. See it

around the photos below.

Clark’s A&P friend has convinced him to try a pre-oiler. He found the Infinity pre-oiler was not driving

oil through the engine so he went to this type:

This unit is made by Oilmatic.

He found a oil separator from a commercially made twin – it was a good looking unit – and I hear two very

clearly opposite opinions on doing oil separating – one says it’s good to save the oil that would blow out the

Page 10: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

breather. The other opinion that you are also saving the impurities and recycling it to the engine – particularly

water which you are trying to burn off as the oil heats up…

Note custom firewall material.

We have insufficient data yet – but Clark said Vance Atkinson said this plane had very good oil temps on

the first flight tests last June – in the heat – using a 15 row Oil Cooler located across the top of the

accessory space – he says it wouldn’t work oriented fore aft – the engine is in the way there:

Interesting sleeves to hold exhaust pipes: Clark Canedy found that Custom Aircraft Exhaust had a set

that he could mount to his rear baffle –www.Customaircraft.com (Beagle: having had my Berkut stainless

sleeves crack time after time, I’m glad to see this option.)

Page 11: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

He says they are expensive – if they can keep things from going through your prop – they are worth it.

Clark also tried out the wonderful switches (lighted and in his case dimmable) from Aircraft Spruce:

And as I’m following Chris Randall’s advice and going to Grand Rapids Glass panel, it was interesting to

see two Dynon Skylines going into a panel in Clark’s Cozy IV:

Page 12: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

Key Maintenance Tip: Dave Ronneberg passed a page of information from Light Speed Engineering (i.e. Klaus Savier) – the key points: 1. Maximum continuous operating temp for coils is 160 degrees – so having the coils were Klaus used to suggest, on the hot side of the engine, is a poor location. Ronneberg suggests that near the intake – bottom of the engine mount is a better location with change in cable runs. (Remember that all spark plug wires should be routed to stand off ¼” or so from all conducting metals and other wires.) 2. Any wire that comes off a coil subjects that coil to internal break down as resistance goes to infinity. 3. Denso plugs supplied by Light Speed are not subject to the same level of burn out as the others, a burned out plug can fail the coil. 4. Regap the plugs annually, a gap over .050” with high compression pistons will reduce the life of a coil as well. 5. Turbocharged engines need bigger “GM” style ignition coils (but they weigh 3 times as much).

And Propeller refinishing: I’m hearing that Catto will refinish and repair his own and Hertzler’s

Props but has been very busy the last 6 months and Hertzler can refinish his own and repair Catto’s props, but there is a dearth of information in my notes on other options unless you do it yourself. I’ve got names in the UK, Italy, etc. Dale Martin, up in Idaho does prop refinishing, I’ve not checked his fees – but I’m frankly ignorant of others who offer it. I’m waiting for a new fangled prop balancing device from a new supplier in Texas…and I’ll report on that too – when I get it. I’ve been testing out Noe Ramirez refurbishing my Catto Prop through two cycles so far – the surfacing looks very good, the balance was nearly right the first time – and I’ll report further in the coming mailings.

Figure $250 for a 2 blade. Noe has set up “EZ Composites” based at Compton, California 530-200-2769 [email protected]; he’s been traveling from as far as Santa Paula to Whiteman and parts in between, but if you would be more comfortable shipping it to me, I can be sure he gets it and get it back to you. Figure 2 weeks turn around most of the time. Noe offers mobile aircraft building assistance and has a lot of experience with wheel pants, gear, gear leg fairings, fiberglass repairs and finishing.

AZ Bunch Technical issues:

Bill Lermer reports," Wings and Canard are off. The Fuselage is coming home next week for

replacement of Tank tops (Strakes)…. Will most likely be out of circulation for 3 months.

Kicked the can down the road long enough". Beagle’s notice a good number of Varieze

strakes leaking over the last few years – some speculate it is auto fuel in some cases

that has destroyed the integrity, but there must be more to it.

Marc Borom reports he had a nose wheel tube give out on him (again) after getting back to

Ryan field. He is wondering where he can purchase a better quality item. Reuland has had

luck with his slick tire/ tube recommended by Rob Martinson. Beagle has been trying to

get Dr. Bob to create a tubeless nose wheel…maybe he or Jim Emons will do it for us.

The new cowl blister used to hide the RV style air filter box now fitted to N433EZ is

giving Reuland fits. After [3 days], the spray can type urethane foam used to form the

blister appears to continue to expand in random areas, even after sanding to a decent

shape. In retrospect, pre-formed brown urethane or Styrofoam would

have been better. I believe Bob Greco had this same problem on his original design

homebuilt. Nevertheless, with the aid of Richard Rivet (parts) and Gary Hertzler

(modification & installation of the hardware) some progress is being made. Squadron II guys

noticed that even the 2 part urethane foam would continue to grow even a year after it was used – used in non-

structural areas for the lightest fill, proved to be a problem – raising a bump in the overlaying glass. I found 2

part Urethane foam was only good to glue together blue foam blocks – the bubbles were basically broken by

rubbing the two surfaces together.. Beagle

Requests to Individual Members:

Do you have a Later Long EZ Owner’s Manual?

Had a guy ask if there was a Long EZ owner’s manual after 1980 – indeed there was a Second Edition

October 1982, which RAF stocked and I have – I know of no other edition. I don’t remember what I did to

mine when I change the engine to O-320, but I’m wondering if anyone has a great example of a marked

up Long EZ manual for the O-320 installation (in theory you all should if you have a different engine, I

know….). It would be good to have me publish the amendment Xerox cost shouldn’t be more than about

$5. a copy. Be assured, the safety benefits of a more accurate Owner’s Manual outreaches any safety

downside…Tell Beagle [email protected]

Doug Olson with Retract (Kelly/Drybread style) Long EZ ON tire sizes: “I'm working on getting my main gear doors to close as tightly as possible so as to not disturb the cooling airflow into the armpit inlets. Problem is the [500x5.0 Michelin] tires are too big to allow complete, flush, retraction. It' a very minor difference in size but with the geometry it makes for a poor fitting between fuselage sides are gear leg covers. I'm thinking about switching to a different tire size for a couple of reasons. Looking at pictures of the Berkut gear ( and E-Racer) it looks like a more compact tire is used. Do you know what size these are? Are they the 11/400-5?” Beagle: Berkut actually uses the slightly larger 11/500x4.0 (I get the numbers reversed from time to time) Aeroclassics at 80-90 lbs. (I'm using them tubeless.) However, there is a slick version of the Chin Sheng tires that is wider at the tread and gives more landings; and then the smallest we use are called Lambs (an old re-brand from the 1980s) and those are Chin Shengs too. On the Long EZ, all these are at about 50 lbs - although the tubeless guys are experimenting with lower pressures and getting fantastic stopping distances (not much reduction in takeoff too.) Some Varieze guys have a smaller tire and possibly a smaller wheel. Olson: I'm currently using Michelin 5.00x5 which, although the same designation, is slightly bigger than the Aeroclassics 5.00x5. I was thinking about changing to the Aeroclassics version of the Lamb tire, the 11/400x5 which would give me more clearance in the wheel wells. Beagle: ABSOLUTELY MORE ROOM - A LOT MORE ROOM – Those Long EZs finished over the last 15 years or so almost all have Lambs, but I'd go to Aeroclassic with tubes instead. I had raised rear with the Defiant too - I first put low profile 600x6 on the Defiant and it still didn't get shorter takeoff. Then I cut the mains down too much and had to go back to regular 600x6 tires...anything toward canard level is important. (For example, the tired OEM Brock nose springs can weaken and leave your nose lower – put in the stronger Cozy spring instead…) Doug: A concern I have about the Aeroclassics 11/400x5 8 ply is that they are only rated at 650 lbs. I'm getting the impression that a lot of people aren't putting a lot of credence into the load ratings. For instance this is the tire spec'd for the Lancair 360 which has a gross weight that would exceed it by quite a bit. Yep. They are much heavier duty than the Lambs - don't fret weights, I'd expect more landings - maybe twice as many as the Lambs - maybe half as many as the 500x5s... I've got a Berkut at 1250 lbs empty. So I'm up around 1800 lbs full and loaded...

What the flyers are doing:

Cookie Skovbjerg checking in with Wolf Volker who’s getting ready for

first flight.

Our Father who was in Mojave reports: “Thanx 4 sending the attached Squadron III newsletter. Its great to

again catch up with the EZ flyers. I will try to make one or 2 of the events. Burt Rutan” Actually, we heard

he was cruising around the desert golf courses – so if you really have a golf event, he’s a

Harry Bawcom is nostalgic:

“ We flew in a privileged time. The $6 gas has certainly changed things. For me it is age. Locally those that still fly don't

go very far. It was a good time. It was sad to see the plane burn [third owner of his plane had the hangar next door go up

and the heat was so intense his Long EZ melted] but I don't have to worry about an aged part hurting somebody. The

weakening canopy was bothering me the most. Stretched to 1/16" or less, aged to 30 years, something a non builder

would never replace and a builder wouldn't want to either. Thanks for thinking of me. Hope to show up at a gathering to

say hello to friends past. I often think of the Punta Pescadero trip where we lost Gus [Sabo]. Except for that, it was a fine

trip.”

Bill Norton, California City: “Towed out at dawn 3 March.

Wings and canard moved the prior weekend so all now together with the Chippy….

Assembled the same day only to find no brakes! Oh well. What would I do if I didn't

have something to work on? At least the engine instruments all seem to work properly

now. Don't know what I'm going to do with an empty two-car garage. Friends are

suggesting I park my car in there. What a concept!”

Page 17: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

Peter Seibold, Mojave started on a Long EZ but passed it on… “Airplane building will have

to wait until the kids are out of the house.”

Jim Gabrick is cold in MN and missing his EZ: “Sold out of AZ last April (2012) and have been in MN Since. First winter I've spent

here in 31 years. Now I remember why I left, it's cold here. Still flying my RV 4 but

missing my LEZ.

Glad to hear you're still at the helm of [Canard Squadron III]. A lot of good

interesting people there…Jim Gabrick. (AKA Duffer).”

John Bauer of cold country Arizona congratulates Roger Young, of Perth, Scotland: “Margie and I spent

the last two weeks of Feb exploring the Highlands of Scotland - a wonderful trip. And thanks to your recent

"ADDRESS LIST SQUADRON III" I was able to contact Roger Young, a Scotsman who flies his Long EZ out

of Perth Airport.

Page 18: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

Roger treated me to a beautiful flight over the snow-capped peaks of the Highlands which you can barely see in

one of the photos - sorry I didn't get better pics, I was too busy flying.

Spirit Rides just don't get any better. Thanks again Roger. The huge hangar where Roger keeps his EZ

along with about 2 dozen other small planes, home-builts and ultralights is interesting in itself. It was built in

the 1930s and is in amazingly good shape. Definitely worth a visit if in the area.”

Ed Masterson of Albuquerque, NM: “I'm currently hanging out on Active Duty at Kirtland

AFB (Albuquerque) NM….Having fun at Air Force Research Labs where I'm a Division Chief in

the Space Vehicles Directorate. I haven't been flying much (don't like the cold, work is

busy, lots of youth sports, Cub Scouts, etc.) but still have my Varieze hangered at

Double Eagle II (AEG).”

Beagle Rant: I was helping a buyer find a top Long EZ across country – he picked one with an O-360 with great background,

wonderful mods and current owner not on flying status. The sale is complicated by what we old builders know

so well from our own experience. Slippage – meaning, you think you’ll get the annual done next Wednesday,

or that a demo pilot will be available on Thursday morning to demonstrate the plane, that the 3 last things to do

will be completed by the time the buyer shows up. That engine temperatures will not be a problem. My best

advice is that when you are selling not to say “It will be ready on Saturday.” Say instead. “I can’t promise

Saturday. I’ll tell you when everything is done, lets build in at least a week between it being finished and you

traveling to get it.”

5 Builder rule – New members: More on Saro Marcarian who joined last month: My wife's nieces and nephews call me Captain Eyebrow. Notice that it is singular. VariEze N944X is not flying yet. Plane will (hopefully) be getting its conditional inspection [first of March]. Hopefully

doing W&B tonight as I need to return the Longacre scales I've borrowed. I recently discovered how remarkably difficult

it is to give away a couple of gallons of 100LL when the fuel can you're draining into is too full. Seriously, nobody wants

free $6 gasoline? Anyway, I'm torn between updating 944X (ridiculously lame panel) or just diving into Cozy 4

construction. Good problems to have I guess. If life continues to treat me well, maybe I can keep the Varieze after the

Cozy is complete. We'll see, I suppose.”

Page 19: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

Don Berlin, Tucson, AZ area, has bought himself a training airplane while he finishes up his own:

“I recently purchased Long EZ N715R. Lynn Burks delivered the airplane, for the seller, to Tucson Ryan Field

KRYN. He checked me out in the airplane and I now have about 7 hrs and 15 landings. The bird flies great and

straight! It is the most fun airplane I have ever flown. The Long EZ I'm building is getting close to being

finished. I wanted to build time in a Long EZ in preparation for making the first flight in the one I'm building.”

“The plane was abandoned many moons ago at Jacksonville IL airport, where

Absolutely .

Looking forward to be part of your group .

August 2012 I purchased a Long EZ plane in a very good flying condition from Less Clark; the plane was based

at Santa Ynez Airport. I wanted to upgrade my new wings while I had time to get back into flying and obtain

my private certificate in which I started to do so since 1982 on and off. My first solo flight was in 1989 and life

has its challenges. I have since got into Paragliding for well over 10 years and some gliding in a sailplane . Got

my private certificate September 2012.

I have commissioned Chris Randall to work on my wing and overhaul the entire plane with complete upgrade of

the cockpit , the engine, electric and the nose. What an amazing talented man Chris is. I have watched the

process of the up grade very closely and educated myself on all the new advance this industry has gained, spend

so much time behind the computer getting educated. It all sounded very confusing at the start of the project

which began in Jan of this year, but with Chris’ integrity and knowledge I think we have made the right designs

and decisions of what to use in creating a very refined Long EZ that will bring some attention to this incredible

plane. We are to have the first test flight some time in the next 10 day - very exiting time as I am so looking

forward to inter the world of your peers and group.

Thank you so much for your note. It sounds like a great community to be a part of. The plane is up north in San

Jose with Dave Dent and we'll tow it down in my brother's truck and rent a trailer there in the coming weeks.

Once it's down here I may need help towing it locally as I find a hangar space to work on it. I'll reach out to the

guys you mentioned today. Who knows, perhaps someone will want to do a spirit ride up to Dave's and have a

good afternoon lunch together and then I'll drive it down with my brother.

To give you an update, I bought a trailer for my EZ and I'm driving up to San Jose to move it down to LA next

week (1st week of March). Let me know what I need to do to become a member and get my first spirit ride.

Also, any thoughts on where to go for paint jobs? I was going to get quotes from body shops, but wanted to see

who I should talk to about it. My EZ will need a fresh coat, and I figure it's easier to do while I already have it

apart.

I'm new to flying (I'm 28yrs old) but really excited to start out with the project.

Update: DeLorme inReach

The inReach pairs with an iPhone to enable tracking and texting anywhere.

Page 24: 13 3 20 Flyins Coming

Last August, we reported on the new Delorme inReach, a Bluetooth device that provides two-way

satellite communication capability for any iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android device (check out the

original report here). In a lot of ways, this device is perfect for general aviation pilots who often fly to out-

of-the-way places. We’ ve heard from many pilots who are using this on a wide variety of missions,

and a recent firmware update brings even better tracking.

In our opinion, the two key features for pilots are:

1. Two way text messaging from anywhere. Remote landing strips, emergency landings, even the

capability for en route messages (your passengers, of course) make this box worth its weight in gold.

Whether you’re pheasant hunting in North Dakota or floating in a life raft in the North Atlantic, you are

covered.

2. Tracking. You can easily set up a Google map for loved ones to check on you while you’re out chasing

that $100 hamburger. When in tracking mode, inReach will send location data every ten minutes. The

bread crumb trail shows up on the map and loved ones can track your adventures. Ten minute intervals

not enough for your spouse? Shorten them to 2 minutes with a new firmware update from DeLorme and

a special data plan. It’s a little more expensive, but provides a better track log for those monitoring the

map. If this is the route for you, we highly recommend picking up the cigarette lighter adapter as the

frequent update rate will burn through batteries. The adapter will also allow you to use the auto-on

feature. As soon as power hits the box, it starts tracking. You won’t get halfway to Albuquerque before

realizing you’re “off the radar.”

The inReach does require a service plan, but a variety of affordable plans are available.

Getting started is a simple three step process:

1. Buy a DeLorme inReach ($249.99).

2. Activate a messaging plan.

3. Download the free Earthmate app (which has recently been updated for iOS6 and the iPhone 5
