ONE WORLD. ONE VOICE. The following ten films were announced Monday, September 23, 2013 as Official Selections of the 2013 edition of the 24fps International Short Film Festival. This announcement brings the total festival selections so far to 18. One final announcement will follow in October, bringing the final competition program total to 30 films. All program screenings take place in the landmark Paramount Theatre, a restored movie palace from 1930 listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 37°4 S Director: Adriano Valerio Producers: Emilie Dubois, Olivier Berlemont France Narrative, 2013, 12 min. In Tristan da Cunha, 270 people live on this small island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Nick and Anne, two teenagers, have known each other since their birth, but Anne has made up her mind: she is going to study in England, 6152 miles away from Tristan. About the Director Adriano Valero was born in Italy in 1977. After a BA in Law and film studies at Marco Bellocchioʼs workshops, he moved to France and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts at EICAR, The International Film School of Paris, where he is now currently employed as the Head Professor of the Fast Track Section and Professor of Film Analysis. In 2012 he founded the BGO Camera Mundi, which organizes film workshops in developing countries. 37°4 S was in competition at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. IIn this Greek tragedy--as acted out by Belgian roosters--Marcel survives the bird flu, alcohol, sleeping pills, and his son, Max. About the Director Tom Schroeder has been making hand-drawn animated films since 1990. His films have been broadcast on PBSʼs Independent Lens series and the Sundance Channel, and have screened at the American Cinematique in Los Angeles and Anthology Film Archives in New York. They have also played widely at international animation festivals, including the Annecy and Ottawa International animation festivals and the Rotterdam and Edinburgh international film festivals. This dialogue free film about an execution describes what happens when the system becomes more important than human life.About the DirectorWriter/director Jenifer Malmqvistʼs short films have been screened and awarded at festivals around the world. Both Peace Talk (2007) and Birthday (2010) have screened at the Sundance Film Festival. A graduate of the film directing program at the Polish National Film School in Lodz, Malmqvist was awarded a scholarship in memory of the Swedish film director Bo Widerberg in 2009. She is currently working on a short documentary and the script for her first fiction feature film. On Suffocation was a 2013 Sundance Official Selection. Jenifer is also the recipient of the 2013 Pixel Talent Award.

It is 3 AM and a boy and a girl are wandering in the city looking for a hospital who will admit the girl. The task proves to be much more difficult than they thought.About the DirectorAli Asgari was born in Tehran, Iran and obtained a degree in Management at the University of Tehran. He is currently finishing his third year of Cinema Studies in Italy. Ali started his career as an assistant-director and worked for ten feature films and more than thirty short films. His shorts have screened at festivals worldwide, and he was chosen to participate in the 2013 Berlinale Talent Campus. Bishtar Az Do Saat (More Than Two Hours) was nominated for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival Palm DʼOr in the short film category.

Abel lives in the winter and Apolline lives in the summer. When Abel crosses the border and discovers her, his curiosity is overwhelming. But soon, their encounter becomes more complicated than they could ever imagine.About the Directors

Carlos De Carvalho studied illustration, graphic design at the Saint Luc Institute (Belgium) and then 3d-animation and direction at Supinfocom (France). He has worked in animated advertising, broadcast designs, and animated series for French television. He now works as an independent director/Art Director.Aude Danset studied 3-D animation and digital design at Supinfocom. She is now both an author and illustrator, as well as a script writer, editorial director, producer, and 3D artist. Premiere Automne has screened on over 35 festivals worldwide including Annecy International, Siggraph, the Venice Biennale, and Short Shorts in Tokyo where it was presented he CG Animation Best Short Award.

Paulie is a child prodigy who goes on a quest to take down the school bully in this comedy about eating dirt, the Dewey Decimal system, and finishing school as quickly as possible.About the DirectorAndrew Nackman hails from Sleepy Hollow, New York, the home of his childhood idol, the Headless Horseman. He recently graduated from USCʼs TV/Film Production MFA program with a focus in directing and editing. Prior to USC, he got his BA from Washington University n St. Louis, majoring in English, and studied film for one year at Kingʼs College in London. Paulie has screened at more than 20 festivals worldwide, and is the recipient of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Palm Springs International ShortFest, Best Comedy at the 2012 LA ShortsFest, and the AVID Silver Award for Best Screenwriting at the 2013 USC FIrst Look Film Festival.

In a bleak, stagnant waiting area, where time stands still, a boy meets a girl. When actions speak louder than words. there are compelled to connect. About the DirectorMark Lobattoʼs working background has been across a variety of TV and film productions, ranging from technical roles in-house and on location to more creative positions. He has worked with Sir David Attenborough on wildlife documentaries, as well as Quantum of Solace on the legendary Pinewood Studios lot. More recently, he has collaborated on assisting directors on feature films, from a year long stint on Wrath of the Titans, to Jupiter Ascending, the latest Wachowski project. He currently has a number of his own projects in development including a short/feature film tie-in Trust in Tokyo. Silent Treatment is just starting the festival circuit, appearing earlier this year as an Official Selection at the Fort Lauderdale and San Jose InternationaL Short Film Festivals.

NIGHT SHIFTDirector: Zia MandviwallaProducers: Matt Noonan, Chelsea WinstanleyNew ZealandNarrative, 2012, 15 min.

Salote, an airport cleaner, starts another long night shift. She keeps her head down, does her job, and gleans the means for her survival from what others leave behind.About the DirectorA Zoroastrian Indian by birth, Zia Mandviwalla immigrated to New Zealand in 1996. Mandviwallaʼs work has traveled to film festivals worldwide and won a host of awards. In 2008, she spent four months in India working alongside Nandita Das on Dasʼs award-winning, multilingual directorial debut, Firaaq. In 2009, Mandviwalla was the recipient of New Zealandʼs SPADA New Filmmaker of the Year Award. Night Shift is her fourth short film, and has been screened at numerous festivals worldwide. The film was in competition at Cannes in 2012, and was the winner of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Firebird Award in 2013.

OH WILLY...Directors: Marc James Roels, Emma De SwaefProducers: Ben Tesseur, Nidia SantiagoBelgium/France/NetherlandsAnimation, 2012, 17 min.

Willy returns to his naturalist roots as he bungles his way into noble savagery.About the DirectorsMarc James Roels studied animation at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium. He has directed three live-action short films, which have each garnered several international awards and nominations at film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival and the Clemont-Ferrand Short Film

Festival. Oh Willy...is his first animated short film.Emma de Swaef studied documentary filmmaking at the Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design in Brussels. Her graduate film, Soft Plants, was her first animated short. She is currently developing a new animated short with Marc James Roels. Oh Willy... has been selected at over 140 festivals worldwide, and has received over 80 international awards.

Christmas Eve and the army wanders the streets of a ruined city. When some desperate survivors manage to find a way out, an old man insists on staying behind to return home for his Christmas dinner.About the DirectorAlbert Blanch was born in Amer and studied Script Comic Illustration and Audio-visual before furthering his study at the ESCAC where his completed a degree in Film Direction. He has worked as a professional illustrator and art director for the company Fantastic Orange Tree, and since 2009 has been a freelance audiovisual artist working with Imago Productions, Zeba Productions, DDM Visual Alma Cubrae, RGB Sports, and Global Music Label to name a few. His short film projects have won numerous international awards. His latest short, La Otra Cena, is just starting on the festival circuit.

One more Official Selection announcement will be made in the next two weeks, bringing the number of competition films to thirty. That announcement will be made:

THIRD WAVE ANNOUNCEMENT (12 films): October 11, 2013

Public Exhibitions of the competition films will be held November 1-2, 2013 at the landmark Paramount Theatre in Abilene, Texas. The films will be curated and assembled on three distinct programs, which are formally presented during the festival weekend.24fps does not follow the typical multi-venue festival format. All Official Selection Films are screened in the Paramount, a beautifully restored vintage movie palace built in 1930. The theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.24fps is also a juried competition, with two separate panels viewing the Official Selection programs prior to the public exhibitions. The Remote Jury, made up of seven industry professionals, views the films (privately) in select cities across the US over the course of two weeks.The second panel, the On-Site Jury, is made up of artists, critics, media

consultants, musicians, photographers, and designers. This group views the films in private screenings in the exhibition theatre in late October. The Jury Prizes (cash awards) are awarded by vote from both panels, and announced at the closing night of the public exhibition programs.
