I hope everyone is enjoying the many wonderful activities offered daily by our talented volunteers. Our resident volunteers are what really make Del Tura special. Without them, life in our community would not be as much fun or as enjoyable. These very special people give of their talents and time to enrich all our lives. Thank you from all of us on the Board of Directors. I don’t know what we would do without you.

The Board has been busy this past month on many issues of importance. Our attorney has filed suite against Hometown America regarding Prospectus 10 (P.10). It is the contention of this Board; the Prospectus that you originally received when you bought your home stays with the home when you sell it. For the past two years, new residents have been forced to take prospectus 10 when they pur-chased a home in Del Tura. Prospectus 1 (P.1) thru 8 (#4 & #9 were withdrawn) provide for an increase in monthly base rent determined by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). P.10’s increase is determined by the CPI, with a “floor” of 3% and a “ceiling” or cap of CPI plus 2%. Homes built after 2007 and re-furbished homes (owned by Hometown) are sub-ject to P.10. The economy of the past few years has decreased the value of our homes and expecting new residents to pay the unreasonable increases in P.10 has resulted in fewer sales. Our lot rental amounts are among the highest in South Florida. Many of our residents are being forced out of Del Tura by these rates. The top three lot rental categories have not increased the past two years (if you are at the cap), but these rates are approaching almost $1,000 a month. When attempting to negotiate these rates and rule issues, our Statutory Committee was met with only three words, “No, No, No.” This left us no choice but to file suite.

In this issue of the Tower, you will find a copy of the latest letter sent to Hometown management. There is also a copy of the letter that was sent sever-al months ago addressing rule changes. Please take time and read the proposed changes and if you feel other issues need addressed, contact one of us on the board.

Please welcome Jim Stenzel to the Board of Di-rectors. He and his wife Karen live on Tierra entrada and are full time residents. Their previous home was in Rochester, New York. Jim comes to the Board with a wealth of experience and qualifications.

His B.S. degree is in Organizational Manage-ment and his Masters in Management of Technol-ogy. He spent 43 years with the Xerox Corporation as a Quality Control engineer, Design engineer and a Supervisor. Jim is the new Vice-President of the Board. Please stop at coffee and say Hello.

Update on J.D. Cats diet: Things are not going well, he has gained another pound.

At 22 pounds, picking up this cat is giving me back problems. He keeps opening cupboard doors and stealing treats. He is also a kleptomaniac. He steals my jewelry and hides it under the bed. The good thing, when I’m missing something I know where to look. I’ll keep you informed of J.D.’s diet progress.

There are some wonderful events coming up in March. Be sure and mark your calendar for the:

March 1 and 2 – Golf Member-Guest TournamentMarch 8 and 9 – Trash & TreasuresMarch 16 – Rally for the Cure Golf TournamentMarch 22 – Choralaires ConcertThis will be my last column as your President.

I can’t believe three years have gone by. I have learned so many things - yes, I was guilty of be-ing one of those people who complained about the Board and wondered why they had such a hard time getting things done. Boy---Did I find out why things took time! I have learned to quote Florida Statute 723 by memory and have copies of it all over the house. My calendar increased from pocket size to 8 ½ by 11 and that some days should have 30 hours not 24. I am still trying to learn patience. The very best thing about being on the board has been getting to know all of you. The residents in Del Tura are very special. I have never known a harder working, car-ing, giving group of people. Del Tura is a beautiful community with its swimming pools, tennis courts, golf course, etc. but it is the people who make it spe-cial. I was truly blessed having board members who were smart, kind, funny, hard working and loved Del Tura. They made my job so much easier. Thank you for all the help, kindness, knowledge, joy and laugh-ter you have shown me. See you at coffee.

June 26, 2012Hometown America, Inc.Del Tura Country Club18621 North Tamiami TrailNorth Fort Myers, Florida 33903Attention: Florian O’DayFlorian,The Del Tura H. O. A. Board of Directors appreciates the opportunity to work with you and Gena to review the rules and regulations issued by Hometown America. After a great deal of discussion, we have agreed upon the following recommendations:• Rule 1b: Change age limitation from 18 to 45; allowing those individuals who are leasing and are under 45 to remain until lease is up for renewal. • Rule 9c: Reword the rule to provide current guidelines for recycled materials. Agency picking up re-cycled materials does not require bundling or separating materials.• Rule 10a: Reword the rule to remove specific breed of dogs, and further clarify that homeowner will be responsible for the safety of other residents and, as such, aggressive dogs will not be tolerated. • Rule 11a: Remove the reference to “applicable attachments and storage areas” as these are not allowed according to other rules referring to storage. • Rule 11d: Remove second line of the rule or rewrite to clarify that HT is responsible for dead trees. Rule should also clarify the responsibility for removal of hurricane debris.• Rule 11g: This rule needs to be enforced. • Rule 11h: This rule needs to be enforced.• Rule 11o: This rule has not been enforced. In addition the rule should be removed or rewritten to clarify that consistency in design of the bollard lights is required. Also previously HT paid one-half of cost of repair or replacement, this should be clarified.• Rule12a: After the time listed (“6:00AM to Midnight”) remove the rest of the rule.• Rule 12b: Change section “Vehicles are not to be on sidewalks, lawns, or vacant lots or undeveloped portions of the Community, at any time” to allow parking for special events; i.e. Vehicles are not to park on sidewalks, lawns, or vacant lots or on undeveloped portions of the Community unless approved by man-agement for special events.• Rule 13a4: Change “HOA/rec office” to HOA Office.• Rule 14c: Rewrite rule to conform to current requirements, example: replacement of existing AC unit has not required prior management approval.• Rule 16: Reword to clarify that “care giving” refers to caring for adults from outside the community.• Rule 26a: The enforcement of rules needs to be reconsidered by management – in numerous instances guests or residents have violated this rule and there has been no staff member available to assist.• Rule 27: Add back previous 2007 language consisting of “Variances to these rules and regulations may be granted by the Community Manager due to space limitations, design considerations, in cases where the intent of a rule or regulation is met but not the specific requirement or in such other circumstance where the exception will not disturb the quiet enjoyment of the Community by other residents or when the basis for the variance is deemed sufficient in the discretion of the Community Management.”• Swimming Pool Rule 7: Change wording to read: No food, glass or pets in the pool; no glass or pets on the pool deck. This is suggested since food is served in grill areas and outside the Pub area – other sugges-tion would be to clarify what is meant by pool deck.• Additional Rule: Recommend addition of safety rules for the golf course and cart paths; i.e., No walk-ing and no bikes allowed on the golf course or golf paths. No dogs allowed on the golf course, leashed or unleashed, at any time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give me a call.Respectfully______________________Joyce Cuffe, PresidentDel Tura H. O. A., Inc.cc: Gena F. Paugh

February 11, 2013Hometown America, LLCAttention: Stephen Braun, President150 North Wacker Drive, Suite 2800Chicago, Illinois 60606Re: Del Tura Golf and Country ClubDear Mr. Braun:The Del Tura H.O.A. (HOA) Board of Directors, on behalf of our residents, wants to make Hometown America aware there are serious issues within Del Tura; and we don’t feel that the community manager or the owners of Hometown America are listening to our concerns. • According to Hometown America’s advertising “Del Tura is known as Florida’s premier age-qualified community”. That phrase may have been correct at one time, but due to the Hometown America’s sales procedures, too many of the newer occupants do not appear to meet the age requirements. • Requests for confirmation that the community meets the age qualification have gone unanswered.• We requested the minimum age be moved to 48 and number 27 of the 2008 issue of the Rules and Regula-tions be eliminated. We were told the regional manager was too busy to complete the changes in 2012.• We have asked that the bar codes for prior residents be removed from the gate system; and have been given a number of excuses regarding both software and hardware. We believe that allowing the older bar codes to remain in the system is both inefficient and a safety concern.• We have repeatedly asked for the northern addresses of our residents. At first we were denied due to the “Privacy Act”. When it was pointed out the Privacy Act did not cover names and addresses, we were told it was corporate policy.• We have noted the failure to maintain the common areas properly, and the poor maintenance provided by residents on their individual properties. Complaints about weeds, shrubs and other items, not cared for by the home owners, have been ignored.• We requested the removal of individuals who present a safety concern, including those who have been con-victed as felons or those on whom the Sheriff is called multiple times. We are told the matter either cannot be taken to court or going to court takes a long time or nothing can be done. • We have pointed out management’s failure to fully adhere to the Landlord/Tenant Act by allowing unap-proved residents to remain in Del Tura.• Speeding within the community is a safety issue brought to the attention of management for several years – no resolution has been proposed or implemented. The list above is not all inclusive, but provides an overview of the types of issues that continue to frustrate the residents and the HOA Board of Directors. The market rents for the Del Tura Golf and Country Club are the highest in the area. As a result, residents should be able to expect and receive the highest quality of maintenance and customer service. The commu-nity management should be given the authority to work with the HOA for the betterment of the community and to create an atmosphere where residents feel their issues are being addressed. The HOA Board does not wish to go to our residents with a recommendation to restrict rent payments or to enter litigation. Rather, we would like an opportunity to meet with senior officials to discuss resolutions to meet our concerns. Del Tura H. O. A., Inc.Cc: Ken Kravenas, Vice President Gena Paugh, Regional Mgr. Florian O’Day, Community Mgr.

The Del Tura HOA Inc. is ask-ing all Del Tura residents, their family and guests to help us make certain of their safety and that of others. We ask that, while in Del Tura, you follow a few simple rules:

• Provide a copy Hometown America’s Rules for visiting fam-ily members and guests.

• Make certain that the driv-ers of all vehicles, including golf carts, have a valid driver’s license.

• All vehicles, including golf carts, must come to a complete STOP at Stop signs, for your safety and that of others.

• All vehicles, including golf carts, should have appropriate front and rear lights.

• All vehicles, including golf carts, should signal for turns and stops, using hand signals when necessary.

• When parking your golf cart: 1. Please do not park in front of

the bicycle rack at the Clubhouse,2. Please park golf carts four to

a parking space, at the Clubhouse.

If you park behind someone, just leave your key in the cart, and don’t be concerned if someone moves the cart in order to leave before you.

• The road right-of-way belongs first to pedestrians, then to bicy-cles, then to golf carts and finally to automobiles and other vehicles.

• The road right-of-way does not eliminate the need for all ve-hicles to have a licensed driver, to stop at stop signs or to provide proper turn signals.

• When considering travel on the Golf Course cart paths, keep in mind:

1. Individuals on foot, joggers, dog or cat walkers, hikers, or other individuals on roller skates, skate boards, motorcycles, motor scoot-ers, motorized wheel chairs or bi-cycles, etc., are not allowed to use the Golf Course cart paths at any time,

2. The one exception for golf course cart path usage is that resi-dents in a golf cart, including non-golfers, may use the cart path that runs from the Clubhouse to Via Del Sol.

The one rule not posted here is Courtesy. Please be courteous when on the roadways and cart paths.

Please give the “other guy” a fair chance by not using exces-sive speed, by stopping at the stop signs, by notifying your intentions by use of turn signals, and by stay-ing clear of cart paths where being hit by a golf ball is a very real pos-sibility.

Safety: If it is not everyone’s re-sponsibility – it should be. Please make it yours.

Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility DEL TURA

By Susan Savitt

“Food and friendship — two things you can’t live without.”

~Aggie FoyBoth food and friendship were

quite evident at the Good Tim-ers’ American booth at this year’s International Food Fair. The state honored this year was Pennsyl-vania, and a Pennsylvania Dutch noodle and ham dish was featured, as were Hershey Kiss cookies. Bar-bara Boyd coordinated our “Julia Childs.”

Chefs were Barbara, Debra Alt, Bonnie Sharpless, Gerri Camburn, Sue Maginn and Nancy Licht. Our “Betty Crockers” were Lynn ever-ett, Gloria ellis, Marge Applebaum, Janet Clemens, and Bea Botter-busch. The servers, in beautiful Amish aprons and bonnets made by Serafina Goncalves, were Alice Harris, Peg McTernan, Alice Gash, Jean Cochran, Fran Pouliot, Lynn everett, Joan Whaley, Nancy Skor-linski, and Lillian Klopp, and yours truly. Also wielding tongs was the dapper Bill Southwick. There were numerous requests for the recipe for the Noodles and Ham, so we in-clude it here:r 1 package Pennsylvania Dutch noodles, cooked according to packager 1 can Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soupr 2 cups sharp cheddar cheeser 1 small container sour creamr Diced or cut-up ham

Melt cheese in heated soup; add ham and combine with noodles. Add sour cream, salt and pepper and/or other spices to taste.

We enjoyed the event as we al-ways do, and are already planning our theme for next year.

Speaking of foods, our members have a variety of favorites. Cathy Wallace likes corned beef and cabbage; Sue Highfill, gator tail; Alice Gash and Fran Pouliot, lob-ster; Linda Leeper, peanut butter; Dottie Hurst, cabbage rolls; Millie Ciccarelli, crab; Lyn Bailey, Philly hoagie; Joan Johnson, edy’s choco-

late ice cream; Anna Incorvaia and Gerri Camburn, shrimp; Peg Gia-vanti; sausage with peppers, mush-rooms, etc.; Kathleen Quigley, all vegetables especially beets and spinach; Anna Wilson says, “any-thing spelled f-o- o-d”, and Judy Fehrman adds, “Never met a food I didn’t like.” Since we all seem to enjoy food so much, it is probably a good idea that we consider enroll-ing in the fitness program Joyce Cuff is putting together for Del Tura residents. Doing fitness activi-ties with friends is very motivation-al. Twenty jumping jacks, let’s go!

We were pleased to welcome back past member Linda Leeper and two new members at the Febru-ary meeting and sweets party (food again!). We are very pleased to have new members Brenda Blaisie and Lee Arthur on board. We also wish Anna Gessner a speedy recov-ery from the flu. At this meeting, the revised By-Laws were voted on and accepted. Copies will be distributed to all members at next month’s meeting.

As Louise Dodge promised, the Del Tura Repertory Company’s production of Luxury Cruise was very entertaining. Bravo to our Louise and all others involved in the production.

In March, Bill Southwick, Joan Johnson and I look forward, as members of the Del Tura Chor-

alaires, to performing an evening of standards at this year’s Spring Concert to be held on Friday, March 22, in the Starlight Ballroom at 7:00 p.m. There are no tickets or fee. Do-nations will be accepted. Sing along or sit back and enjoy.

Alice Harris, at Clancy’s, as it is a tradition, will host the March birthday dinner. The date will be announced at the March meeting held at 5:00 p.m. on March 5 in the Jacaranda Ballroom. Those be-ing toasted to celebrate their March birthdays are: Debra Alt, Lyn Bai-ley, Gerri Camburn, Pat Clemens, Bev Krueger, Maureen MacKin-non, Fran Pouliot, Kathleen Quig-ley, and Barbara Simmons. “erin go Bragh”

New members are always wel-come. If interested, contact Pat Clemens at 567-0716 or attend the March 5 meeting. New members joining in March will be aboard in time to attend two favorite activi-ties - the Road Rally on Wednesday, April 17, and the Kentucky Derby party on May 4. We would like to give a special invitation to join to the Sand Hill Crane that Doris Meyer featured on the cover of the February “Tower.” Loved it!

The quote at the beginning of this article is true. However, we suggest that you may want to limit your food, but never your friend-ship.

By Dennis CottiniChairperson

Along with the colorful and beautifully decorated booths fea-turing eight countries, two hun-dred seventy five (275) residents were treated first with the aromas and then by the delightful tastiness

representative of each country. All the foods were interesting from ex-otic to wonderful home cooking.

The countries were Greece, Holland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Po-land, Thailand, and of course the U.S.A., where Pennsylvania was the featured state.

The newest entry this year was

Thailand and we hope to see other countries represented next year.

In 2011, at the suggestion of the Choralaires, the HOA proposed the purchase of a Clavinova. The residents voted to approve the purchase, so in April 2011, the Clavinova was purchased. At the time, many residents asked the question, “What is a Clavinova?” The simple answer was that it is a glorified piano; but that is not the best answer.

The Clavinova is much more than a glorified piano and, unfor-tunately, we do not use it as often as we should. The instrument be-longs to the HOA and is available for use by HOA members for HOA sponsored events, private parties, weddings, memorials or other HOA approved usage.

The Clavinova we purchased is the Clavinova CVP-503 and it is easy to use, has great sound and multiple features. The audio ac-companiment lets the user play the melody of a song while a variety of musical instruments accompany and enliven the performance; it is like playing in an ensemble. There

are guide functions to assist users unfamiliar with the instrument, including “Music Finder” which allows the player to select a song, then the system provides a suit-able style, voice and tempo. The machine provides information in six languages and musical styles in Rock, Latin and others. There is the ability to record songs and save them, both onto the instrument it-self or to a USB flash drive. The instrument will also play songs stored on a USB drive; in fact the vendor included a USB drive with 1000 songs in the purchase of the Clavinova. There are also 120 pre-recorded songs on the Clavinova, which features full karaoke for en-tertaining.

Perhaps you have not played a piano in a long time or never played a Clavinova. Although they are not free, Petrucci Pianos in Cape Coral does offer lessons on the Clavinova.

I hope our HOA members will use this fine instrument more of-ten in 2013. Use of the Clavinova may be arranged through the HOA office.

Investing is a Marathon -- Not a SprintInvestors sometimes may get frustrated with their investments because those investments don’t seem to produce quick results. Perhaps that’s understandable in our fast-paced society, in which we’ve grown accustomed to instant gratification. But investing is, by nature, a long-term activity. If you look at it in terms of an athletic event, it’s not a sprint, in which you must pull out all the stops to quickly get where you’re going. Instead, it’s more like the 26.2-mile race known as a marathon.

And as an investor, you can learn a few things from marathoners, such as:

•Preparation— No one gets up one day and is ready to run a marathon. Marathon runners train for months, and even years. As an investor, you, too, need to prepare yourself for the “long run.” How? By learning as much as you can about different asset classes, types of risk and all the other factors associated with investing.

•Patience— Marathoners know they have a long haul in front of them, so they typically create a “game plan” — one that takes into account such factors as their physical condition, the weather on race day and the characteristics of the course, such as whether it’s hilly or flat. Investors should also create a strategy — one that encompasses their goals and ways of working toward them — and stick to this strategy.

•Perseverance—Marathoners may deal with injuries, dehydration and other setbacks, either while training or during the actual race. But as long as they’re able to keep going, they do so. As an investor, you too will face obstacles, such as market down turns. But as long as you continue investing and don’t head to the “sidelines,” you have a good chance of making progress toward your goals.

•Vision— Marathoners study the course they’re on, so they know what’s ahead — and where they’re going. As an investor, you also need a vision of what lies in front of you — the number of years until your retirement, the type of retirement lifestyle you anticipate, what sort of legacy you plan to leave, and so on. Your vision will help drive your investment decisions.

•ProperCoaching— Not all marathoners have individual coaches, but many have at least gone to clinics or joined running clubs so they could learn more about the various aspects of this grueling event. As an investor, you can certainly benefit from guidance or “coaching” in the form of a financial professional — someone who knows your individual needs, goals and risk tolerance, and who has the experience to make recommendations that are appropriate for your situation.

Every marathoner is familiar with the difficulties of the challenge and the satisfaction of finishing the race. As an investor, you also will be tested many times. Furthermore, you’ll never really cross the “finish line” because you’ll always have goals toward which you’ll be working. Yet, by emulating the traits of successful marathoners, you can continue working toward your objectives — and perhaps you’ll avoid the blisters, too.

HEALTH NEWS

Of particular interest to women, but a problem for men as well, metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. This syn-drome consists of five elements:

An enlarged waist: At least 35 inches for women, 40 inches for men.

High blood pressure: 130/80 or higher.

Low levels of HDL: Less than 50mg/dL for women. Less than 40 mg/dL for men.

Insulin resistance: Higher than normal blood glucose level or a fasting blood glucose level of 110mg/dL or more.

An individual with three or more of these characteristics has the metabolic syndrome. Women who have it are three times more likely to die from heart attack or stroke and are nine to thirty times more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes.

GARAGE SMOKE DETECTORS

By Dennis CottiniIn light of two recent garage fires in Del Tura, it may be

wise to install a smoke detector in your garage. At the very least the owner or neighbor would be alerted to the smoke and possibly avoid more damage or injury. One fire was due to a short in the golf cart and the other was caused by a short in a truck.

PLANNING FOR LONG-TERM CARELong-term care includes medical and non-medical care for people who have a chronic illness or disability. Non-medical care includes non-skilled personal care assistance, such as help with everyday activities, like dressing, bathing, and using the bathroom. At least 70% of people over 65 will need long-term care services at some point. Medicare and most health insurance plans, including Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policies don’t pay for this type of care, also called “custodial care.” Medicare only pays for medically-necessary skilled nursing facility care or home health care if you meet certain conditions. Long-term care can be provided at home, in the community, in assisted living, or in a nursing home. It’s important to start plan-ning for long-term care now to maintain your independence and to make sure you get the care you may need in the future.

PAYING FOR LONG-TERM CARELong-term Care Insurance – This type of private insurance policy can help pay for many types of long-term care, including both skilled and non-skilled (custodial) care. Long-term care insurance can vary widely. Some policies may cover only nursing home care. Others may in-clude coverage for a range of services, like adult day care, assisted living, medical equipment, and informal home care. Note: Long-term care insurance doesn’t replace your Medicare coverage. Your current or former employer or union may offer long-term care insurance. Current and re-tired Federal employees, active and retired members of the uniformed services, and their qualified relatives can apply for coverage under the Federal Long-term Care Insurance Program. Personal Resources – You can use your savings to pay for long-term care. Some insurance companies let you use your life insurance policy to pay for long-term care. ASK YOUR INSURANCE AGENT HOW THIS WORKS.

Other Private Options – Besides long-term care insurance and personal resources, you may choose to pay for long-term care through a trust or annuity. The best option for you depends on your age, health status, risk of needing long-term care, and your personal financial situation. (Taken from the 2012 Medicare & You Handbook)

DEL TURA Book Review

“The War of 1812”By Carl BennSubmitted by Marjorie Fisher

The author of this book is a Ca-nadian museum curator.

This war is deemed the strang-est war in the history of the United States. The Treaty of Ghent ending the war returned all conditions, after untold casualties, to the way they were before the war began, with no concessions of land or trade. The multifaceted involve-ments included Great Britain, the United States, France and the American Aboriginals.

The United States declared war on Great Britain because of its ha-rassment of American trade ves-sels. Thus the war had been termed the United States second war of in-dependence.

The Napoleonic War was in progress at the time. The United States was painfully supplying the French needs, which was much opposed by the British, thus pro-ducing a war for freedom of the

seas. The United States invaded the

British colonies in Canada hop-ing for land acquisition which they failed to accomplish. Native Indi-ans allied with Britain to defend Canada. The Indians aspired to conquer the Northwest Territory to set up their own state. This ambi-tion was never accomplished be-cause their chief was killed aiding two British forces.

British aggression continued as they burned the United States capitol. They were rebuked in at-tacking Baltimore, which inspired Francis Scott Key to author the National Anthem as he watched it all and saw, with the morning light, the United States flag was still flying.

This was the last time, exclud-ing the event of 9-11, that foreign aggression has been fought on U.S. soil.

A most successful bake sale was held on Tuesday, February 12, for the benefit for our beautiful War Memo-rial. This will help defray the expenses for its upkeep and the purchase of new flags when needed.

Tony Oliver headed this benefit up with the help of Julie and Marty Masone and Molly Walker.

It was a sight to see. Three long tables were piled high with all kinds of cakes, pies, cookies and fudge, all con-

tributed by our own Del Tura “Betty Crockers”, all willing to share their baking skills for this wonderful project. There were so many volunteers that gave a helping hand to pull it all together. The kitchen was swarming with our own “gals” busily sorting and pricing the continuous flow of all the goodies being de-livered.

At the end of the sale the total amount that came in was a whopping $745.21.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this event such a success!

Del Tura Entertainment Committee UpdateDEL TURA

February found many Del Turi-ans laughing with Don Townsend, singing along with Suzy Cruz, and dancing with the Del Prados in the beautiful Starlight Ballroom. Many of us who saw Don, “The Mental-ist” Townsend, are still trying to figure out how he “did it.” If variety is the spice of life, then we at Del Tura are very spicy individuals.

There is still some time to pur-chase tickets to see the Donna & Dunning Show on March 9, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $16.00 per person, and remaining tickets will be sold starting at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday March 5 before Coffee. This show includes songs, comedy, and im-pressions of many of your favor-ites. Additionally, in March, the Green Day Dance featuring South-ern express will be held on Friday, March 15, at 7:00 p.m. Any re-maining tickets will be sold at 7:30 a.m. before Coffee on March 5 and 12. Tickets are $5.00. A variety of music including country, rock and roll, disco, Sinatra, and elvis will be featured for your listening and dancing pleasure. These events are HOA sponsored and there are no refunds available. Hope you will

join us.Mark your calendars for the

April dance, which will feature Mike Glean, to be held on April 20, at 7:00 p.m. Mike comes rec-ommended by several Del Turians who have seen him perform at lo-cal restaurants such as Banana Joes, Nervous Nellies, Bahama Mama’s, and the Cape Coral Moose. The first day of sale will be April 2, at 7:30 a.m. for HOA members only. Remaining tickets will be available April 9 and April 16 at 7:30 a.m.

A reminder, on the first day of sale for all shows and dances, the doors open at 6:30 a.m. From that time on, you are asked to pick a number - first come first served - which will determine the order you are called in to select your seats. Numbers will be called starting at 7:30 a.m. You must be an HOA member to purchase tickets on the first day of sales.

The entertainment Committee is dedicated to bringing entertainment to Del Tura for you to enjoy. The current committee is composed of Cathy Wallace, Chairperson, Mary Harrell, Debbie Winsor, Ruth Ann and Dave Lugten, Alice Harris,

The Welcome Committee sponsored a get-together for the new residents on Tues-day, January 15, at 3:00 p.m., in the Foun-tain Grill Restaurant. We had 68 people join us which were more than expected! Nick Matarrese, the owner of the restaurant, did a great job setting up the room so we could all fit in and adding extra food when needed! The members of the Welcome Committee served drinks, took pictures and welcomed everyone as they arrived. everyone en-joyed the food Nick supplied and learned a lot about Del Tura from the speakers. Joyce Cuffe spoke about the HOA, Linda Storma explained FMO, Sue Symes discussed the FISH program, and Marlene DeGraaf in-troduced the package of activities which

are provided through volunteers living in Del Tura. Many questions were asked and answered. everyone was given a Del Tura cloth bag with a HOA handbook, informa-tion about FMO and an activity folder. Paul Taggart, the golf pro, gave us a certificate for a round of golf for four people, TK’s Hair Design gave us a certificate for a free hair cut, Nick gave two $25.00 gift certifi-cates for the restaurant and pub, and FISH provided us with large yellow oval hand soap dispenser with a black dish (the colors of fish).

Some of the new residents showed an interest in volunteering for FISH and the Welcome Committee and others said they would like to volunteer when they were set-tled. They are already talking about having a potluck so they have more time to talk and get to know one another.

Thank you to everyone who participated! If you have not been visited by one of the

committee members please fill out a form in the HOA office so we can contact you. Marlene DeGraaf Welcome Committee Chairman

“With all my heart I wish you well; laughter outweighing tears. With all my heart I wish you love; the strongest gift of God, with all my heart……..”

It has been said, that the power of love can move mountains and at the same time destroy hearts. Such a powerful word! emotion-ally it can take us to the moon and back, or break our hearts and spir-its. In our lifetime we have seen the power of love triumph over evil and pain, and give individu-als the strength to do and endure impossible things. At each stage of our lives we will continue to ex-perience “love” in various forms.

For most of us, our first experi-ence with love is what we sense as infants. every one of us is born with an enormous capacity to re-ceive love. The nurturing in those vulnerable stages of our lives will eventually mold us into who we

DEL TURA Reflections “With All My Heart”

are today. Will we trust? Will we be cautious, or protective? Will we wear our hearts on our sleeves? Our life experiences with this powerful emotion will determine the actions and decisions we make throughout each stage of our lives.

Love reaches far beyond sym-bols. A single rose may symbolize love but without sincerity, it is just a rose. To a small child a dandeli-on given from the heart represents a true sincerity, a love without res-ervation. (I still have those dan-delions pressed in the pages of my old books. I bet you do too!) That kind of love melts cold hearts, opens closed doors and minds, and has been known to create miracles. You can’t beat that kind of love!

Remember those handmade hearts, and holiday cards, com-plete with original poems, your child made with love? They were so excited and could hardly wait for you to open them as soon as they came through the door? Our

refrigerator was always covered with their artworks of love! Over the years we have received many gifts from our children and grand-children, but the ones we will al-ways keep close to our hearts, are the ones they made for us as young children.

Throughout our lives, love will teach us many lessons. It will break our hearts as well as give us hope and promise. Broken hearts can be mended by the power of love. A smile, hug, a kind word, or gesture can relay a glimmer of hope, or create a spark that can ig-nite a flame and rekindle the fire within a person’s soul. Love will get us through the most difficult times and celebrate the happiest of times of our lives.

Love is powerful, healing, and believing. Let us continue to share our gifts of love with each other every day. Your kindness will be returned to you in many ways.

By Jack Blevons

Wow! It's the 9th of February al-ready as I am writing this. The days just keep flying by. The older we get the faster the time seems to fly by and there seems to be no way to slow it down. When we were young kids, we couldn't wait to get older so we could drive or drink or do this or do that, get away from home and be our own boss. None of that could come fast enough. Now we try to be younger and don't want to get older. We want to reverse the cycle but can't. Only thing we can do now is just think back to all those years when we were so young. Seems so long ago!

Anyhow, yesterday we finished week 13 of our 2012-2013 season. It hardly seems possible that by the time you are reading this we will have only three more weeks

to play in our regular season. Then on March 22, we will be having our annual Tournament which will be different this year than in years past as instead of the Six-Team Shoot Out it will now be a eight- Team Tournament, made up of the first through fourth place winners in both the "A and the "B" Flights. Thanks to Glenn Tointon who drew this up for us. Trophies will still be awarded the same as last year with the top three finishers in both flights all getting trophies. The Tournament trophies will also remain the same, being awarded to the top three finishers in the Tour-nament.

As of yesterday's games, the leaders are as follows: The "A" Flight leaders are still Ben Har-graves/Bob Crawford in 1st place with a 33/6 record. Tied for 2nd place are Pete Slusarski/Doris

Friday Shuffleboard LeagueDEL TURA

Thurber and Jack/Janet Blevons at 30/9 and Glenn/Mary Kay Tointon follows them at 27/12. The "B" Flight leaders are Len Fleming/Donna Crawford at 26/13 followed by Stan Peters/Don Mummert at 24/15 and in 3rd place is Audrey Person/Debbie Petrosillo at 19/20. With just five weeks left on the reg-ular season as I write this, the races for the trophies are still very much wide open. There is still plenty of time to move up to replace some-one above you in the standings. Five weeks means fifteen games, so the standings can change a lot by the time those fifteen games are completed.

We have been blessed every Friday with beautiful S.W. Flor-ida weather. Unlike past years we haven't had to wear parkas, stock-ing caps or gloves down to the courts to play and also I am knock-ing on wood, we have not had a Friday rained out yet either. Let’s hope that continues on through the month of March. I know that we really could use some good rain, but not on Fridays please? One last reminder of our annual Bust-Up Party which is held on March 29 in the "Royal Palm" Ballroom in our Clubhouse from noon until about 4:00 p.m.. This is for all league members, their spouses or signifi-cant others and also the people who sub in our league and their spouse or significant other. The cost is only $5.00 per person and that includes all the food that is served plus soda and desserts. BYOB is also an op-tion. We usually have brats, hot dogs, sloppy joes, and potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, chips, desserts and all the condiments and all the soda you can drink. All you need to bring is yourself and an ap-petite. We also present the 18 tro-phies to the respective winners at the party and have picture-boards from the past five seasons. Best of all, is the camaraderie that is shared by our league members which makes the season finale so much fun. each Friday, there will be a posting on the shuffleboard shack with the particulars and a place for you to sign up, so Janet and I can plan on the food that we'll need to make and buy. Hope to see you all there. Thank you and we’ll see you again in the April Tower.

At press time, the Men’s Club Championship is scheduled to be played with tee times sched-uled on Wednesday, February 13, Wednesday, February 20 and Thursday, February 21. Two time defending champion, Jerry Butler, and runner-up Jerry Beiermann return to the entries along with former six time champions Lee Rowland and Les Lenhart. The 2007 champ, Randy Gottsacker, and 2009 winner, Bob Deems, are also in the field.

The MGA continues to sponsor the Wednesday morning games with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. New members are invited to join the activities by signing the entry sheet in the dungeon or by con-tacting Ray Rowe.

The Nine-Holers also continue their weekly Wednesday contests at 9:00 a.m. and those wishing to participate can sign the sheet in the dungeon before each Monday morning. To learn more about their competitions contact Jack Riordan.

In what is considered by many as the most exciting tournament of the year, the New england team, captained by Bill Bouchard, beat the World team by the score of

28.5 to 19.5 in the Ryder Cup. The score was determined over a three day period with day one be-ing 12 two man best ball games and the teams ended the day all even at 6.0. Day two featured 12 more matches consisting of two man teams hitting alternate shots and the New england squad had a great day as their team was able to win 10 of the 12 matches and jump to a 16-8 lead. The final day has 24 mano y mano matches with a goal for each team being a total score of 24.5. The World team, under Tom Gould, tried to come back but fell short by a 12.5 to 11.5 score and making the New england team the champions by the score of 28.5 to 19.5. This win gave New england two wins in the last three years but they still trail in the series 4 to 2. Next year’s tournament will take place on Super Bowl weekend with Bill Weddleton leading the New eng-land team and the World group has yet to appoint their leader.

March’s golf schedule includes the ABCD tournament on March 9, and the Men’s executive Golf Association (MeGA) tourney on March 22. Other scheduled events are posted in the dungeon and on the Del Tura golf web site.

Editors’ Note: While the following senti-ments are solely those of this author, many others have expressed these thoughts as well. They are certainly thoughts to ponder and observe.

When I moved here to Del Tura in June, one of my biggest concerns was MY DOGS. These beasts were accus-tomed to having a fenced-in backyard; going out to do “their business” when-ever the mood struck; never having to walk on a leash; and certainly not hav-ing to share their space with other dogs! But, that doesn’t mean that I didn’t know the rules of a responsible dog owner! And, it didn’t give me the right to plead ignorance of these rules and disregard them. Most of these rules are just common sense:

• Respect your neighbors. Don’t force your dog’s company on other people.

• Obey the local leash laws. Some dogs are “reac-tive” to other dogs. So, just because your dog may be socialized, the dog he approaches may not be…having total control by means of a leash can certainly avoid any altercations. Allowing your animal to run loose at night is totally unacceptable. Some night your dog may fail to come home. Remember that there is wildlife out there that may cause injury or

disease to your pet.• Pick up after your dog. No one

wants to step in or smell the “gift” your dog has left behind. Pick it up imme-diately (even if it’s in your yard) and dispose of it properly. Failure to clean up after your dog is not only disrespect-ful to your neighbors in this community but a health hazard as well.

• exercising your dog. Walking your dog is a wonderful way to become bonded with your animal. It provides mental stimulation by introducing the dog to other people, animals, and situa-tions. I have great concerns with own-ers who run their dogs alongside a golf

cart. I find this dangerous to the dog, dangerous to any pedestrians, and dangerous to other traffic. I have seen a dog run over with the cart because he bolted in front of it. If you are physically unable to walk your animal, then maybe you can find a friend to exercise your dog for you.

When you were raising your children, did you al-low them to go anywhere, at anytime, and do any-thing they wanted? When they dirtied themselves, did you clean them? So, why would it be any differ-ent with your dogs? As responsible dog owners, we must set a good example. Owning a clean, friendly dog reflects positively on the species and may help protect our right to own companion animals.

All of us are accustomed to seeing our “snowbird” neighbors return to their homes in the Northeast, Midwest, or even Canada but do you realize we have a few living in Del Tura who actually return to their primary home as far away as the european country of Sweden? LARS AND GUN JOHANNeSSON of Via Del Sol do just that when they return to Dalarna in the middle of Sweden. Incidentally, Gun’s name is not pronounced as we would say gun.

Both Lars and Gun grew up and went to school in Dalarna which is an area similar to one of our states. Lars spent a year in the military which was com-pulsory for all young men as they were trained to participate in UN missions. The saying is that they go into the service as a boy and return as a man.

Following his stint in the mili-tary he went into the construction business, mainly building houses. Today he is still active in the real estate business. Real estate in snowy Sweden is slow in the win-tertime, however, and that is when the couple enjoys sunny Florida.

When Gun finished her obliga-tory schooling she furthered her education by attending a school geared to restaurant managing and then worked several years in that capacity. She retired from her ca-reer when she became the mother of two sons and one daughter. She

now has two grandsons and two granddaughters.

Later she became a manager in an older peoples’ home which housed between twenty-five and fifty elderly residents. In 1987 she met Lars when she was attending a school reunion in his hometown near Stockholm. She has lived near Stockholm for twenty years.

Both Lars and Gun commented that health care, including nurs-ing home care, is practically free in their native country. Taxes, though, are very high both for em-ployers and workers. There are over 9,000,000 people in Sweden.

During the month of October Lars enjoys hunting moose in the mountains of Sweden. He noted that the gun laws there are very

DEL TURA Meet Your Neighbor

strict and people have to apply for a license to hunt and undergo a background check. Gun enjoys search-ing for antiques and often refurbishes them for resale. She is shown in the pic-ture with a sewing hassock which is hollow inside and may be used to hold sewing articles and materials. She has reupholstered about fifty of these hassocks and then sold them.

Lars and Gun bought their house in Del Tura in 2011. They had been used to vacationing in different areas of Florida and came to our community because of another Swede, Sara Lesko, who has lived in the US for nearly sixty years and is an US citizen but returns to her native country in the sum-mer.

How thankful we are that this very delightful couple is here to add richness to the diversity of our community.

Tennis In Del TuraSee all the tennis players hard

at work on the courts during the Winter Friendship Tournament held in Del Tura on January 19 and 20, 2013. After the court play the players joined all their fellow ten-nis players, their mates and friends to lots of good food, especially the gourmet hot dogs prepared on the grill by our own Chef, Jack Lin-geman. (Please note his attire at the grill.) Another round of tough competitive tennis at all levels of play will take place on all six of Del Turas tennis courts on March 9 and 10, 2013, during the Spring Fun Tournament. This will be fol-lowed on March 10 with the An-nual Tennis Association Awards banquet.

DEL TURA

By Molly Walker

The Del Tura Cruisers just re-turned from their tenth cruise. We boarded the bus which took us over to Ft Lauderdale where we boarded the new HUGe Royal Caribbean ship, Allure of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world. This ship has the capacity of 5,400 passengers plus the crew. It has 2,700 double occupancy cabins and is seventeen decks high. It is three football fields long. On board we found a deck just like the boardwalk in Coney Island and an-other deck just like Central Park in New York.

One of the highlights of our trip was having a “zip line” that was high above the boardwalk. We now have added to our Dynamic Duo, the “Dynamic Trio”. Anna Wilson, Fred Lane and Henry Coache bit the bullet and decided to give it a try. They got geared up and off they went zipping right above our balcony cabin. Good job guys, you were our Del Tura heroes that day. I’m sure it was a thrill for them as it was for us watching. They did pass by the climbing wall though. We all should have been hitting the fitness room, but I for one never found where it was. The food was very good, but as usual we all ate too much. Our clothes seemed a little tighter than when we came aboard.

All in all, it was a great cruise and enjoyed by all. How could we miss with great weather, great food, and great service?

All too soon it was over and we had to come back to the real world, back to having to make our own meals, make our beds and not hav-ing our waiter place our napkin on our laps. Oh well, we can look into another cruise for next year. If you

have any suggestions let us know and Val will see what we can do. Come and join us next time for a wonderful vacation.

The Del Tura Amigos opened the second round of their Mark Ford League schedule with a thumping of an excellent Sabal Springs team by the score of 14 to 2. In this game, the offense finally came around and compli-mented what has been an outstand-ing defense all season long to run their win streak to seven games. At press time, the team stands in second place with a 9 and 1 record with eight games remaining on the schedule. The only loss was a hard fought game against the 2012 league (and the previous 6 years champions), Old Bridge Rookies, by the score of 4-2.

At the half way mark lead-off hitter Joe Angelilli is batting .680 and Dave Denman is at .630. John Ruttman has come off the injured reserve list to blast pitching at a .846 pace and Rick Antaya is hit-ting a robust .548 and has knocked in the most runs with 25 rbi’s. Three other Amigos are batting over .500 including Rick Bour-quin, Craig Lindahl and Doug Pri-anciani. The team overall batting average is at .465 with 160 hits in their 10 games.

The team’s schedule calls for games to continue on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5:00 p.m. at Cape Coral’s Northwest Softball Complex off Chiquita through the last week of March. Admission is free and the team enjoys playing before enthusiastic fans.

DEL TURA Games Roundup

By Glenn Tointon

At the halfway mark, our Tues-day morning 10:15 bowling league has tightened up considerably. The Geri-Atrix (made up of Gerald Dyer, Geri Ruetenik, Dave Lane, and Frank Mistretta are in first fol-

lowed closely by the 4 G’s (made up of MaryKay Tointon, Diana Camp, Lyn Bailey, and Jim Bue-scher).

High average leaders are Gene Stevenson for the men at 158 and MaryKay Tointon at 157 for the ladies.

Next year we are hoping to have a split season so anyone who comes down in January and wants to join the league may do so. If you think this is something that may interest you please call Glenn Tointon at 920-309-1294 or Dave Csuy at 239-5439746.

DEL TURA Tuesday Morning Bowling

By Glenn Tointon

Our Wednesday traveling shuf-fleboard league has gotten off to a slow start. After tying a very good Six Lakes team, 15-15, our team took it on the chin by some excellent teams from Lake Ar-rowhead, Windmill Village, and

Tara Woods. We will have played Heritage on February 13, which should have a much better out-come.

So far our teams’ best are Jack Blevons (5-3), Dave Denny (7-3), and Bob Crawford (7-5).

This year’s team is made up of Jack and Janet Blevons, Bob

and Donna Crawford, Glenn and Diana Camp, Pete Slusarski, Ted Harris, Judy Lessard, Dave Den-ny, and Glenn Tointon. Our subs are Len Fleming, Al and Hennie Oostema, and Ben and Gail Har-graves.

The Club Championship was held on January 16 and 17 fol-lowed by another great lunch on the 17th planned and coordinated by our Social Chair, Gail Reeve. A wonderful complement to the lunch was the addition of two de-licious homemade soups provided by Gail Reeve and Jack Riordan, the very talented spouse of our own President, Judy. A resound-ing “Thank You”, to both of you for sharing your excellent culinary skills for this event.

Congratulations to the follow-ing Club Championship winners:Club Champion: Nancy MoyerFlight 1 1st: Mary Ann Wuerdeman2nd: Molly Brown3rd: Joan Massey

The next two major events scheduled for the Ladies Nine-Hole League are the Couples Valentine Scramble on February 13 and the Club Invitational on March 7. Results and winners of these two popular events will be published in the next issue of “The Tower”.

As a reminder, the League’s An-nual Meeting including election of Officers for the coming year will be held in early April (date to be scheduled). Information on the nomination and election process is posted in the dungeon. Any

member who wishes to be con-sidered a candidate for elected of-fice is urged to submit her name to the Nominating Committee. The Committee, who will personally follow up with these individuals, will also accept recommendations for potentially interested mem-bers. An ideal election process would provide for at least two (2) candidates for each position.

In addition to regular announce-ments at the weekly tournament play, members are reminded to regularly review published an-nouncements in the “dungeon” to obtain specifics for all planned events. New members are always welcome to join the Nine-Hole Women’s Golf Association at any time during the year. Don’t hesi-tate to contact Marlene DeGraaf at 599-4404 for more information.
