Dear People of Holy Spirit Parish:

“Do not be afraid…” (Mathew 10:31)

July 1, 2020 is the 5th anniversary of the birth of Holy Spirit Parish. Over the next few weeks we will reflect on the significance of that day and how this new born babe has grown. Today, we must prepare for the re-birth of the parish, when we hold our first Mass open to people attending in four months.

To carry the image further, have not these past four months been a period of gestation? Like the infant growing in the mother’s womb unseen, have we not been growing new spiritual abilities and strengths these past four months? Powers of empathy, compassion, self control, prayer, com-munication and patience! When we gather again we will be a changed people. We will be a new church.

Please find in this newsletter a “How To Go To Mass” guide sheet. There is also a video on the parish website that walks you through all the new practices going to liturgy involves.

On June 26th an invitation to register for the 9:00 a.m. Mass on July 5th will be sent out to all parish members either by email or by US Postal Mail. You will need to register in ad-vance to attend the Mass either by calling the parish office or making a reservation online through Sign Up Genius. Each person or family will be given an assigned seat. This is necessary to maintain the limit of people we can hold now and to assist in the case contact tracing must be done. How to Attend Mass at Holy Spirit Parish During Covid-19 Restrictions

When? If there is not a new breakout of Covid-19 Holy Spirit Parish will resume offering Mass open to the public

on July 5th at 10:00 a.m. As interest grows additional Masses will be added. Mass will still be available via live-stream on Sundays at 8:00 a.m. through our website.

Who? We ask those over 65, those with underlying health complications, and those who work in areas where

there is a high risk of exposure to the virus not to come until we can welcome everyone back. Additional-ly, anyone who is ill, has been exposed to or may have been exposed to the virus should refrain from at-tending.

Where to sit? Everyone must register with the parish in advance of

coming and receive an assigned seat. Only seating in pews will be available. We need to limit the number of people in the church and know where everyone is seated in case there is a need to trace contacts. Those who use computers can reserve a place through the parish Sign Up Genius link included in our weekly email and on the parish website. Others are asked to call the parish at 344-9117 to reserve a seat. If you try to sign up to come and there are no openings, you will be given first rights the following week.

Wearing What? All are asked to wear a mask in the building. Even if

you do not feel the need for it, many of the people around you do. We will have both homemade and commercially made masks available for those in need of one.

Which Way In? We will all enter through the main Ministry Center

doors. These doors will open at 9:30 a.m. Other church entranc-es will remain locked. Please remain six feet apart from people you do not live with. An usher direct you to your seat.

What to Expect? There will only be instrumental music during the

Mass. As per Diocesan guidelines there will be no processions, no sign of peace and no communion cup. The priest will bring communion to you in your pew. Please receive it in the hand. Instead of a collection there will be baskets at the entrance

and exit.

What if? To avoid having to clean the entire building we ask people to use the restrooms in the Ministry Center if

needed. There are sanitizer dispensers as you enter the church.

Which Way Out? We will wait for ushers to dismiss people at the end of Mass to help assure social distancing.

Please exit the building immediately after Mass through the main Ministry Center doors, as you came in. Bulletins will continue to be available online or by mail. Please observe social distancing and refrain from gathering in the parking lot.

Why? To give thanks to God and to strengthen the love that holds the world together. Thank you for your pa-

tience with these limitations!

Questions? Be assured that we are working hard to protect our community from the spread of Covid-19. We are

blessed with the assistance of Chris Przybylski, a professional Compliance Manager, in arranging these methods of safely returning to Mass. Please contact the parish office or email [email protected].

Faith Formation: Virtually Real, Really Virtuous!

S ix months ago, we would never have imagined completing Confirmation via a video conferencing app, holding the ALPHA Series on-line or presenting Vacation Bible School over our own parish YouTube channel. The Coronavirus pandemic has

forced lots of changes upon the Faith Formation program . . . and, it has created new and wonderful opportunities!

Here are some highlights:

Small Discipleship Groups gathered virtually throughout the Easter season to open their hearts to the Gospel and to one

another. Guided by the Holy Spirit, strangers became friends and faith, hope and charity were deepened. Pflaum Weekly catechetical resources were made available on-line to families who participate in the grade 1-8 Faith Formation Program.

Links to Spiritual Enrichment materials of all sorts have been, and remain, available on the parish website. Year 1 and Year 2 Confirmands completed their program year via ZOOM gatherings which included a Wild Goose Chase

for Biblical references about the Holy Spirit, an effort to crowd-source some free verse about our Holy Mother, Mary and an invitation to create a shared playlist of music reflecting songs that lift us up in these troubled times.

A Faith in Action Film Series is in the works and coming to a parish or home “theater” near you this Fall, courtesy of some

of our parish family film buffs. The Planning for Significant Sacraments continues. Even as we speak, our First Holy Communion families are provid-

ing feedback about when and how to go forward with First Communion Masses. The rite for the celebration of the Sacra-

ment of Confirmation (Year 2 confirmands) will occur in early November in the parish. This summer’s week-long Vacation Bible School, We Are the Body of Christ, will be presented over the parish YouTube chan-

nel. The pre-recorded daily series will include a Reader’s Theater presentation, a craft, a recipe to share, a sing-a-long song and prayer. Stay tuned for registration information!

High School Ministry is back . . . in the flesh, really! Set aside Saturday, July 11th from noon to 2:00 p.m. to Picnic at Jor-dan Park. Watch the bulletin for details and get ready to jam with our own Guitar Hero, Fr. Steve. Hey, if you don’t come it won’t be fun . . . so, come! #HereToStay #KeepTheFaith

The ALPHA Pilot Summer Series has begun! Members of the Small Group and ALPHA leadership teams are doing it: 11

weeks, 11 talks, 11 opportunities to ask or speak about anything having to do with life, faith and where to go from here.

What’s next? The opportunities are endless and amazing! Let’s create and enjoy them together!! #FaithFormationIsForever

Haiti Well Update

T o date, we have received donations of $12,555.00 towards the project. Thank you for such an outpour-ing of support for this much needed project.

We are making some progress but the Coronavirus has slowed us down a bit. We’ve been gathering data about the current water infrastructure at St. Joseph Rectory and School in Lalomas, Haiti. This was essen-tial in preparation for the Request for Proposal to North Water Consulting. With that as a back drop to

what was happening since our last newsletter update, let me share with you what has recently transpired with the project.

I am happy to share that on May 22nd we were informed that the Mary Alphonse Bradley Fund Committee has approved us to submit a formal Grant Application. We are targeting a grant request of approximately $13,000, which may be about half of the well project cost. Submitting a grant does not guarantee we will get it, but advancing to the next phase of the Grant process is very encouraging. The application is due September 1st. Our Haiti Well team will work on preparing that Grant over the com-ing months utilizing the information that we will receive from the initial request for a water assessment study.

Fr. Max and Fr. Eveneau (former Pastor of 17 years) provided us with some valuable information about the current water infra-structure at the Rectory and School. They did have a shallow dug well (picture) and portable pump that was used to pump wa-ter into a tank on the Rectory roof. Unfortunately, the well has long been dry and the engine has ceased working. Additionally, they received water from the mountain top in the past, but the piping has been damaged and no longer provides water. The only water available is from the local river, 5-gallon buckets hauled to fill the roof top tank and buckets with filters to supply clean water for the students.

We have provided the current water infrastructure information and a Request for a “Potable Water Well Development Project” to Northwater Consulting in Springfield, IL. We are asking them to provide us with a “desktop” Water Assessment of the

groundwater within Lalomas. In addition, they will provide us with the Geological Assessment on the best loca-tion for placing a drilled well in the vicinity of the School and Rectory. We have also requested a timeline of pro-posed work and a written budgetary statement of costs.

As you can see, progress is being made . . . a bit of a slow start, but we are now moving forward. Let us keep our

Haitian Family in our prayers that through the Coronavirus we can navigate a well project that will bring them

much needed clean water to help sustain a happy and healthy life in Lalomas, Haiti. Thank you all very much

Ahead of Schedule … Way Ahead! Phase II Update

W ith so much backed up work, contrac-tors are moving fast, putting Phase II of

our building project way ahead of schedule. The plan was to spend June removing the asbestos, the old heating, air conditioning and

ventilation systems and installing new ones. Leaving other projects to follow later in the sum-mer. The HVAC work has gone very well giving the church state of the art energy efficient heat-ing, fresh air and cooling systems.

To our surprise, by the second week of June the electrical contractors showed up. Work began on the electrical system and lighting. The chandeliers have been re-wired with ener-gy efficient fixtures. The spotlights have also been replaced and in some cases moved. The bell tower has been repaired. The 100 year old, rotten, wooden structure that held the bell in place has been rebuilt. And the mechanical

work around bell has been replaced.

Work on the baptistery has also begun. Addi-tional joists were put in the floor beneath where it will stand. The font has been fabricated. The decking and ramp will be built in early July. We have been blessed by parish members with a gift

of $20,000 along with other handsome donations for the installa-tion of a permanent professional video system that will allow us to provide quality live stream Masses even when the church is full of people. Because of many churches seeking the same service our contractor, Audio Architects, will not be able to install the new sound system and now video system until the fall.

Lastly, the Sacred Worship Committee has been working with Church Interiors to prepare four possible painting schemes for the interior of the Church. They will be presented to the parish in July for study and reflection and eventually a vote. The painting of the church is still scheduled for summer of 2021.

Get to know our Family Life Committee and Ministry Coordinators!

I s your new baby sleeping soundly under a handmade quilt that came to you in a gift basket from the par-

ish?

When recovering from surgery at home, have you en-joyed receiving a visit and communion from one of our homebound Eucharistic ministers?

What about those quarterly Spirit Lunches filled with song and laughter, good table conversation, great food and compelling speakers?

Have you held on to the words of care and promise written in a condolence card sent to you by a member of our Grief Support Team?

Can you resurrect the tantalizing fragrance of egg bake, sausages and coffee wafting into the church during Mass on a Spirit Breakfast Cafe weekend?

If you can answer “Yes!” to any of these questions then you have been the beneficiary of the efforts of our Fami-ly Life Committee, Family Life Ministry Coordinators and, of course, many volunteers. Our Committee and Coordinators continue to work behind the scenes to enact some of these ministries and to anticipate the re-newal of others, whenever we are able to gather again as a parish family. D ue to the Pandemic, the Financial Picture is mostly out of fo-cus. Comparing actual results to budget figures is not produc-

tive. Never the less the Month of May was incredible! For the first month since December we had Revenue in Excess of Expenses to the tune of $18,187! The figures present testimony to the Great Generosity to Holy Spirit Parishioners. Thank You! It is true that YTD Total Revenue is ($37,946) less than YTD Total Expenses, but if the month of June can be similar to May, we will be OKAY at the end of the fiscal year.

Holy Spirit Parish celebrates, honors and loves our Class of 2020 High School graduates! We are proud of you; you are exactly what God had in mind when God created you. So, to paraphrase Pope Francis: “Do not bury your talents, the gifts that God has given you . . . Look to the future with hope . . . Do not serve ideas, serve people . . . The secret of joy is living to serve.” Already, you serve faithfully and well. As you go forward, we are here to serve and support you with our prayers, presence, gifts and love. Congratulations, graduates. God bless and keep you always!
