I Have A Plan Iowa®

IowacodespecifiesthatallIowastudentsmustcreatestudentcurriculumplans.Studentsbeginworkontheirplansduring8thgradeandcontinuetobuilduponthemthroughouthighschoolbycompletingidentifiedstatecomponentsspecifictoeachgradelevel.AsIowa’sdesignatedcareerinformationanddecision-makingsystem,IHaveAPlanIowa® incorporates the state componentsintograde-specificguidewaystohelpschoolsmeettherequirementsofthestudentcurriculumplan.The guideways:• Provideaneasystep-by-stepprocessforstudentstocompletetherequiredcomponents.• AllowtheIowaDepartmentofEducationtoreceivetherequireddatareportsautomatically.

Using the 12th Grade Guideway

Toaccesstheguideways,signintoanaccountand select the Iowa Guidewayslinkfromthelandingpage.

PLEASE NOTE: Your students MUST completetherequiredcomponentsintheGuidewayin orderfortheirworktoberecordedfortheIowaDepartmentofEducationreport.

Iowa 12th Grade Guideway

Thisguidewaywillwalkstudentsthroughpartsofthesystemthatarerecommendedfor12thgradestudents.Whilethereisalothere,studentsdon'tneedtodoitallatonce.Theycanstopbetweenstepsandpickuplaterwheretheyleftoff.The12thGradeGuidewayletsstudents:

• Discovertheirinterestsandcheckoutrelatedcareers• Search for careers• Search for colleges• Connect the dots and build a career plan• Practiceforinterviews• Reflectontheirplansforthefuture

Step 1 – Interest Profiler

Allowstudentsatleast10–20minutestocompletethe60questionassessment.Tobegin,clickGet Started.

TheInterestProfilerasksstudentsquestionsaboutwhattheyenjoy.Besurestudentsunderstandthat,whencompletingtheassessment,theyshouldfocusonwhattheyliketodoorthinktheywouldliketodointhefuture,assumingtheywilldeveloptheskillsneeded.

NOTE:IfthestudentpreviouslycompletedtheInterestProfiler,theirresultswilldisplay.Theyshouldcompletetheassessmentagainto see how their interests have changed overtime.

Oncethisstepiscomplete,studentswillclickContinue at the top of the page to progress tothenextstep.

RESULT:OncestudentscompletetheInterestProfiler,theywillbeabletoviewtheirInterestAreas.InterestAreasarebasedontheresearchofJohnHolland,whotheorizedthatmostindividualsareacombinationofthefollowingqualities:

1)Realistic2)Artistic3)Investigative4) Social5)Enterprising6)Conventional

Hint:ThereflectionisnotrequiredtocontinuetothenextstepoftheGuideway.

Optional Educational Enancement Activity

Aftercompletingtheinterestprofiler,instructstudentstofindanoccupationthatisnotonhisorherlistbutisstillofinteresttothem.Studentsshouldwriteaparagraphaddressingthefollowing:whatfactorscontributeto

thatoccupationnotshowingupintheirresultsandwhattheywouldneedtodotogetittoappearintheirlist.

Step 2 – Career Finder

The Career Finder allows students to search forcareersmatchingaspecificcharacteristicorseveralcharacteristics.

Characteristicscanbefoundontheleftsideofthescreen.

HINT:Studentsmustsavethreecareerstotheirportfoliobeforetheyareallowedtocontinueintheguideway.

Forexample,inthisCareerFindersearch,educationlevelisusedasacharacteristic.

If students select the bachelor’sdegreebox,CareerFinderwillautomaticallyselecttheboxesindicatinglesseducationwhichwillgeneratealistofcareersrequiringabachelor’sdegreeand all other careers requiringlesseducation.

If students wish to view only those careers requiringabachelor’sdegree,theycanunchecktheotherboxesbeforeselectingSee Your Matching Careers.

NOTE: The list of matching careers can be refined by selecting additional characteristics in the column on the left.

Studentsshouldcontinuetoaddcharacteristicsthatareimportanttothemtonarrowtheirlisttoamanageablenumberofcareers.

NOTE: It is not recommended for students to input information for each characteristic.

Tolearnmoreaboutacareer,studentsshouldclickonacareername.

NOTE: To progress in the guideway,students must save three careers totheir portfolio.

Tosaveacareertoaportfolio,selectthe Add to Portfolioontheleftofthepage.Oncethefirstandsecondcareers have been saved to the portfolio,selectReview Other Careers at the top of the page to review the careerlistagain.

RESULT:Onceatleastthreecareersofinterest have been saved to theportfolio,selectContinue at the top of thepagetogoontothenextstep.

Optional Educational Enhancement Activity

Have students access their list of careersfromtheCareerFinderresults.Fromthislist,havestudentsdeterminewhereinthecountrytheywouldfindaconcentrationoftheseoccupations.

Step 3 – School Finder

Therearemanyfactorstoconsiderwhensearchingforacollege.TheSchool Finder helps build lists ofpostsecondaryschoolsthatmatchthecharacteristicschosenbythestudent.

Characteristicscanbefoundontheleftsideofthescreen.Thestudentshouldchoosethecharacteristicswhicharemostimportanttothem.Thecharacteristicsshouldbechoseninpriorityorder.

Tolearnmoreaboutaschool,studentsshouldclickonaschool’sname.

HINT:Studentsmustreviewandsavethreeschoolstotheirportfoliobeforetheyareallowedtocontinueintheguideway.

Tosaveaschooltoaportfolio,selectAdd to Portfolioontheleftofthepage.

Oncethefirstandsecondschoolshavebeensavedtotheportfolio,select Review Other Schools at the top of thepage to review the school listagain.

Onceatleastthreeschoolshavebeensaved,select Continue at the top ofthepage.

HINT: Students can review andupdate their list of saved schools atanytimeintheCollegePlanningSectionoftheirportfolio. Optional Educational Enancement Activity

Fromthelistofschoolsgeneratedbytheschoolfinder,havestudentscreateaprosandconslistoftheirtoptwoschools.

Step 4 – Career Plan Builder

The Career Plan Builder helps studentsbringtheirworktogetherbyselectingacareer goal and the appropriate educationpathandputtingitintoaplan.The career plan includes a selected career,program/majorandaschool.

NOTE: Students can build multiple plans. They should be encouraged to build a plan A and a plan B to ensure they have options.

Tobegin,studentsshouldselectCreate a new career plan.

Create a Career Plan

Thefirststepistochooseacareerfortheplan.Tobegin,studentsshouldclickthe Start your plan now button.

NOTE: A simple plan may be completedin 15 minutes. Some studentsmay take longer or may wish to spendmore time on their plan.

Choose a Career Path

Students should add a career to theirplan.Thiscanbedonebychoosingacareeralreadysavedtotheirportfolio,searchingforaspecificcareer,orexploringcareers(organizedintosimplecategories).

HINT:Ifthestudenthascareers,schoolsandprograms/majorsalreadysavedtotheirportfolio,thesaveditemscanbeusedtobuildtheplan.

Confirm Your Career Choice

Thestudentshouldthenconfirmthecareerchoicebylookingattheimportantaspectsofthecareerandansweringthequestionstoconfirmthatitistherightchoice.

HINT: If students wish to change the career intheirplan,theycanedittheirchoice.

Oncetheaspectsofthecareerareconfirmed,studentsshouldclicktheSaveandcontinuebuttonatthebottomofthepage.

NOTE:Thecharacteristicsofthechosencareerarecomparedtothatofthestudentbasedonassessmentresults.Forexample,ifthestudenthastakentheInterestProfiler,theirworkinterestresultswillbecomparedto those of other people who tend tosucceedinthisoccupation.

Confirm Your High School Course Plan

Thenextstepistoconfirmthatthegeneralcourseplandisplayedmatchesthecoursesthestudenthastakenorisplanningtotake.Thecourseplanrecommendationsaregenerally based on those courses that would prepare a student for the career orpostsecondaryeducationchoseninthecareerplan.

Students should select the Save andcontinuebuttonatthebottomofthepagewhenfinished.

HINT: If the high school course plan is notassociatedwiththecareerchosen,thestudentispromptedtochooseadifferentcareer.

Choose an Educational Path

Basedontherecommendededucationalrequirementsforthechosencareer,studentschooseanacademicprogram.

Iftherecommendedprogramisnotwhatthestudentislookingfor,theyarepromptedtochooseadifferentcareerfortheirplan.

Confirm Your Educational Path

Studentsnowconfirmtheirchoicebyansweringquestionsabouttheimportantaspectsofthechoseneducationalpath.

HINT:Iftheprogramdoesnotfitthestudent’sgoals,anotherpathcanbechosen.

Oncecomplete,studentsshouldclickthe Save and continuebutton.Choose a Postsecondary School

The next step is to choose a school fortheplan.StudentsshouldusethedropdownmenutochooseastateorregionandclickGo.

Students should choose a school fromthedisplayedlistandclicktheAddbutton.Theschoolslistedarethoseschoolswhichoffertheprograminthestateorregionchosenbythestudentinprevioussteps.

Tochooseadifferentstateorregion,usethedropdownmenuandclickGo.

HINT: If the student is not interested inanyoftheschoolslisted,theyshouldchooseadifferentprogram.

Confirm Your Postsecondary SchoolChoice

Studentsnowconfirmtheirchoicebyansweringquestionsabouttheimportantaspectsofthechosenschool.

HINT:Iftheschooldoesnotfitthestudent’sgoals,anotherschoolcanbechosen.

Oncecomplete,studentsshouldclickthe Save and continuebutton.

Make Some Lifestyle Predictions

The next step of the plan is for studentstothinkaboutthetypeoflifestylechoicestheywillbemakinginthe10-15yearsaftergraduatingfromhighschool.Studentsareencouragedtoconsiderwheretheyplantolive,whattypesofleisureactivitiesinwhichtheywillengageandthetypeoffamilytheyplantohave.

Oncecomplete,studentsshouldclicktheSave and continue buttonatthebottomofthepage.

Making Your Plan Happen

The next step is review the advicelistedasastartingpointtomaketheplanhappen.

NOTE: The Edit button on the lefthand menu allows students to go back to any portion of their plan and edit their choices.

HINT: Studentscanbuildmorethanoneplantoreflectdifferentoptionsorcareerchoices.

Studentsshouldclick Continue at thebottomofthepagetogotothenextstep.

What Next?

Lastly,studentsareremindedthatdeterminingtheirfutureisanongoingprocess.Studentsareencouragedtouse the Your Journal feature in theirportfoliotoreflectontheprocessandtheirresultingcareerplan.

Studentsthenaskthemselveshowcomfortabletheyarewiththeplanthattheycreated.

Studentsmaynowchoosetocreateanothercareerplan,oriftheyarefinishedbuildingtheirplantheymayclick Continue in the Guideway badge.

Step 5 – Job Interview PracticeInthenextstep,studentswillpracticeanswerstocommonjobinterviewquestionsrelatedtospecificjobcategories.Theanswerswillbestoredintheportfolio.

Note: This activity will take 20‐30minutes for students to complete.

Students should choose the set ofquestionstheywouldliketousefortheactivity.

Note: The student may not progress tothe next step of the guideway untilthis step is complete.

Students should type in their answerstoeachquestion.Oncecomplete,theyshouldclick Next Question.

Note: The text to the right of theanswer box provides helpful information and tips on how to answer the question.

Hint: Studentscanskipquestionsandthenansweranyskippedquestionsattheendoftheinterview.

Step 6 – Your Plan of Study

Inthisstep,studentswillreviewtheirplan of study to ensure their 11th grade courses have been recorded accurately.Studentsshouldmakesuretheir current 12th grade courses aremarkedasenrolledandvalidatetheirplans for 12th grade to ensure they areontracktograduateandobtaintheireducationandcareergoals.

NOTE: Students can return to review their plan of study anytime. Make sure students update their plan if their career pathway or postsecondary plans change.

HINT:Youcanaskstudentstosubmittheirplantoyouforapproval.Youcanalso view reports in the Professional CentertodeterminewhichstudentsareontrackforgraduationfromtheReports tab.

Oncetheplanhasbeenreviewed,revisedandupdated,studentscanclickContinue in the Guideway badge atthetopofthepage.

Step 7 – Journal Reflection

In the last step of the 12th GradeGuideway,studentshaveachancetoreflectontheircareerandcollegeplans.

Click Add a new journal entrytostart.

Studentsentertheirthoughts,ideas,andcommentsinthetextbox.

HINT: Remindstudentsthattheirjournalentryisnotprivate.Itcanbeviewed by professionals (educatorsandcounselors)attheirschool.

WhenstudentsclickSave and thepage is refreshed showing theircomments,thestepiscomplete.

NOTE: Students can edit their journalentry by using the Edit button.

Oncefinished,studentsshouldclickthe ContinuebuttonontheGuidewaybadgeatthetopofthepage.

Summary

Asummarypagewillappeartoletthestudentknowtherecommendedstepsarecompleted.Studentsmustcontinuetothesummarypagebeforeitwillshowthattheyhavecompletedthisguideway.
