Scott A. Siegfried, Ph.D. Superintendent Educational Services Center 4700 South Yosemite Street Greenwood Village. CO 80111 720-554-4262 Members of the Cherry Creek School District Community: Welcome to the 2019-20 school year, and welcome to your own personal pursuit of excellence. As we kick off the beginning of another academic year, it’s an exciting time for students, parents and staff alike across our 108 square miles. Once again, we are at the outset of a path through another important chapter of our lives, one that will offer rewards, challenges and plenty of chances to meet CCSD’s longstanding mission of being “Dedicated to Excellence.” Whether you’re looking forward to your first day of kindergarten or preparing for the final year of your high school career, this is an exciting time, one filled with promise, expectation and careful planning for the journey to come. We’re on this journey together, and as your Superintendent, I’m excited for the growth, learning and milestones to come in the next school year. I’m looking forward to the formal opening of the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, a new facility made possible by the generosity of our community that will prepare high school students across the District for the demands of the future. I’m excited to see how students at dozens of our elementary and middle schools take advantage of the new innovation spaces that will come online this fall. I can’t wait for the kickoff of another year of amazing student-led activities that run the gamut from championship athletic programs to award-winning theater and musical programs. Most of all, I’m excited to see our how our community comes together for another year of learning rooted in the values that have served CCSD so well for nearly 70 years. I know that a commitment to excellence will steer our course in the coming months, as will goals designed to meet our mission “to inspire every student to think, to learn, to achieve, to care.” Our course includes a focus on innovation and applicable, real-world skills for our students. It includes a commitment to equity and excellence for all, a focus on helping every one of our students to become accomplished leaders. It means offering every child a safe, inclusive and engaging space where they are encouraged to find their passions and pursue their dreams. I’m excited to take that journey with all of you this year, and I look forward to the progress that we will all make together. Scott A. Siegfried, Ph.D. Superintendent

July 1, 2019 Dear Raptor Families, While I hope this letter finds you enjoying the summer season, we continue to prepare for the 2019-2020 school year. Enclosed is information that will allow us to team together to provide your child with an outstanding educational experience. Please note that most of our check-in information and forms are being provided through the district website http://my.cherrycreekschools.org. Thank you for taking the time to review the material with your child and for providing the necessary information electronically. Eaglecrest is committed to being an exemplary learning community focused on preparing each and every student for college success. As such, high academic achievement and school safety will continue to be our primary areas of focus. Our teachers, counselors, deans, mental health professionals, and student achievement services personnel work in conjunction with administration to create a positive, productive, and respectful school climate. Eaglecrest High School has outstanding programs in athletics and activities allowing students to compete, perform, and excel. Our students discover that a well-rounded program of study, including a balance of challenging academic coursework and participation in extra-curricular activities, gives them the best opportunity for preparation for life beyond high school. We continuously review our comprehensive safety plan to insure a safe, productive, academic environment whereby students are expected to spend the academic day engaged in highly academic endeavors. Because of security and supervision limitations, building doors will not open until 7:30 a.m. and students who are not involved in a supervised activity after the end of the school day are required to leave campus by 3:45 p.m. Please take the time prior to the start of school to coordinate your family’s schedule and transportation plans to adhere to these time constraints. As a reminder… our Raptors Rest, Relax, and Read Program requires ALL Eaglecrest students to read over the summer. The list of books and associated assignments were given to students at the end of the school year. This information can also be found on the EHS website http://eaglecrest.cherrycreekschools.org as a reference or if you are new to our community. I invite you to stop by and introduce yourself. Our faculty and staff look forward to meeting you and working with every student and parent to make this their best year ever at Eaglecrest High School. Sincerely, Gwen Hansen-Vigil Principal

Raptors Rest, Relax, and Read

July 1, 2019

Happy Summer!

The Eaglecrest English Department—in collaboration with the Eaglecrest Library—established the

Raptors Rest, Relax, and Read program to help prepare all students for academic success in the

upcoming year while also striving to foster a love of reading in all. To that end, all Eaglecrest

students are expected to read a book this summer and be prepared to engage in a task related to the

book when they return to school in August.

The assignment description for all Honors and Advanced Placement English courses—

Honors English 9, Honors English 10, AP English Language and Composition, and AP English

Literature and Composition—can be found here:

bit.ly/EaglecrestSummerAssignments

The assignment description for all other English courses—English 9, College Prep English 9,

English 10, College Prep English 10, English 11, College Prep English 11, English 12, and College

Prep English 12—can be found here:

bit.ly/RaptorsRestRelaxandRead

If you have any questions about the summer assignment, please contact Doug Cole, the Eaglecrest

High School English Department Coordinator, at [email protected].

Happy Reading!

EHS Mathematics Calculator Policy

A graphing calculator is now required for all math courses. Our courses have exams that

require the use of a calculator and exams where the use of a calculator is prohibited.

Students need to know how to do the math without a calculator. It is equally important

that they learn how to use the current technology as a tool for when the numbers and

problems get really “ugly”.

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and bring the appropriate calculator each day.

As a math department, we do not have any “classroom” calculators to lend to students,

even on test days. Be sure to obtain the correct calculator and bring it every day!

Calculator Requirements:

Students must obtain either the

TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84, TI-84+, TI-84 CE or the TI-Nspire (non-CAS).

The “Silver Editions” of the calculators are more expensive because they hold more

memory and come with more tools. “Silver Editions” are great but are not necessary.

These calculators cost between $99.00 and $150.00 new. They can be purchased used on

Craigslist for as little as $35.00.

TI - 84 TI - 83 TI - 84 CE

Additional notes about graphing calculators:

The math department will have about 300 of the TI-84 graphing calculators to rent out to

students at a cost of $25 per rental during an academic year. This is a limited supply

available on a first come first serve basis. See the rental agreement on the opposite side of

this form for more details.

WHY SHOULD YOU PAY YOUR ACTIVITY FEE? That is a good question because most parents and students are curious about where that $30 goes. The money is divided up between Athletics and Activities. Some of the benefits of paying the Activity Fee are:

o All regular season home athletic events are FREE with a paid Activity Fee o All students who pay their Activity Fee receive a FREE school pride t-shirt at check-in

o Homecoming, Prom, and After Prom are supported by the Activity Fee, and prices are discounted for each event with a paid Activity Fee

o Other Student Leadership sponsored events are often discounted with a paid Activity Fee

The list below shows how the portion of the fee assists EHS Activities. In some cases, the money is the sole form of funding for a particular activity. In other cases, it is a supplement that reduces the cost of a product or event for students. The following activities are funded by the Activity Fee: Art Club Brotherhood Band Bell Choir Book Club Choir Climbing Team Club Spectrum Color Guard Creative Writing Club Dance DECA Drama Club Dungeons and Dragons Club FBLA FCA FCCLA French Club

Game On Hip Hop Club International Thespian Society Key Club Latin Club Latinas Unidas LINK Crew Literary Magazine Marching Band Mariachi Mock Trial Team Model UN Muslim Student Alliance National Art Honor Society National English Honor Society National French Honor Society National Honor Society National Japanese Honor Society

National Latin Honor Society National Spanish Honor Society Newspaper/Raptor TV Orchestra Outdoor Adventure Club Pan Asian Culture Club Peer Buddies Positive Impact Robotics Science National Honor Society Sisterhood Social Studies National Honor Society Speech and Debate Student Leadership Technical Theatre Yearbook Youth Ending Hunger

It is helpful to pay your Activity Fee because it supports the activities listed above and because the activities listed impact YOUR STUDENT and YOU in great ways!

Eaglecrest Check-In 2019 A Message from the Counseling Department Welcome back Raptors! We hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready to jump into your new classes and have a fantastic start to your school year! Each year, a great deal of thought, time, energy, and staff budgeting is involved in creating student schedules. Last February, students were provided with information and counsel regarding course selection. Throughout the spring and summer Eaglecrest’s Registrar and Eaglecrest counselors have spent time rechecking student schedules and making final adjustments when needed. Each of these steps was taken to ensure that every student is placed in appropriately challenging coursework. Due to the amount of time and energy taken to design the best master schedule possible based on the courses student selected, schedule changes in August will not be permitted. While schedule changes are not possible, if there is a legitimate error in academic placement then students can work with their counselors to request a schedule repair. Schedule repairs must meet one of the conditions listed below. Students can email their counselors about schedule repair concerns. It is the philosophy and belief of the faculty and administration of Eaglecrest High School that students may be scheduled into classes during all four periods of both A Days and B Days. Please do not request a particular study period because it is not possible to meet those requests and still offer the classes that meet all students’ needs. Thank you for your understanding. Reasons for needing a schedule repair: • A schedule that does not include a sufficient number of credits (Freshman must have 8, Sophomores must have 7, Juniors must have 6, Seniors must have 5) • A schedule that does not include sufficient core classes (4 academic classes or 3 AP

courses) • A schedule that places the student in the wrong level of a course • A schedule that doesn’t include a course(s) required for graduation (Seniors only)
