Opening Hymn

Ye watchers and ye holy ones,

bright seraphs, cherubim and thrones,

raise the glad strain: alleluia!

Cry out, dominions, princedoms, powers,

virtues, archangels, angels’ choirs: alleluia!

They come, God’s messengers of love,

They come from realms of peace above,

Alleluia!

From homes of never-fading light,

From blissful mansions ever bright.

Alleluia!

They come to watch around us here,

To soothe our sorrow, calm our fear:

Alleluia!

Ye heavenly guides, speed not away;

God willeth you with us to stay.

Alleluia!

But chiefly at its journey’s end

‘Tis yours the spirit to befriend,

Alleluia!

And whisper to the faithful heart,

‘O Christian soul, in peace depart.’

Alleluia!

Blest Jesu, thou whose groans and tears

Have sanctified frail nature’s fears,

Alleluia!

To earth in bitter sorrow weighed,

Thou didst not scorn thy angel’s aid:

Alleluia!

To God the Father, God the Son,

And God the Spirit, Three in One,

Alleluia!

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 30 September 2018

Gradual Hymn

Lord God, to you our hearts we

raise

to give you thanks and worthy

praise

for your most high creation:

the glorious angels near your

throne.

A radiant light around them gleams,

they see and hear you at all times,

unceasing serve you, day and night,

protecting us in every plight.

With raging hate the devil burns,

as still the world towards death he

turns:

the church, the world, all righteous

law

he would blot out, now as before.

Meanwhile the watching angel host

are ready at your word, O Christ,

and filled with wisdom that you

give,

your flock from devil’s craft to

save.

Glory to God in highest heaven,

the same to Christ his Son be given,

and to the Comforter in need:

we praise with them the threefold

God.

Paul Eber 1511-69

Based on Phillipp Melanchthon 1497-1560

Tr Honor Mary Thwaites 1914-

Offertory Hymn

Praise to God who reigns above,

Binding earth and heaven in love;

All the armies of the sky

Worship his dread sovereignty.

Seraphim his praises sing,

Cherubim on fourfold wing,

Thrones, Dominions, Princes, Powers,

Marshalled might that never cowers.

Speeds the Archangel from his face,

Rearing messengers of grace;

Angel hosts his words fulfil,

Ruling nature by his will.

Yet on man they joy to wait,

All that bright celestial state,

For in Man their Lord they see,

Christ, the incarnate Deity.

On the throne their Lord who died

Sits in Manhood glorified;

Where his people faint below

Angels count it joy to go.

O the depths of joy divine

Thrilling through those orders nine,

When the lost are found again,

When the banished come to reign.

Now in faith, in hope, in love,

We will join the choirs above,

Praising, with the heavenly host,

Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 30 September 2018

Final Hymn

Christ, the fair glory of the holy angels,

Ruler of all men, author of creation,

Grant us in mercy grace to win by patience

Joys everlasting.

Send thine archangel Michael from thy presence:

Peacemaker blessed, may he hover o’er us,

Hallow our dwellings, that for us thy children

All things may prosper.

Send thine archangel, Gabriel the mighty:

On strong wings flying, may he come from heaven,

Drive from thy temple Satan the old foeman,

Succour our weakness.

Send thine archangel, Raphael the healer:

Through him with wholesome medicines of salvation

Heal our backsliding, and in paths of goodness

Guide our steps daily.

Father almighty, Son, and Holy Spirit,

Godhead eternal, grant us our petition;

Thine be the glory through the whole creation

Now and forever.

Psalm 138

Refrain and Chant: Barbara Griffin (1965 - )

1 I will give you thanks, O Lord, with | my whole | heart:

even before the gods | will I | sing your | praises.

2 I will bow down toward your holy temple ’ and give thanks | to your | name:

because of your faithfulness and your loving-kindness, for you

have made your name and your word supreme ‘ | over | all |

things.

3 At a time when I called to you, you | gave me | answer:

and put new | strength with- | in my | soul.

4 All the kings of the earth shall praise | you, O | Lord:

for they have heard the | words | of your | mouth; REFRAIN

5 And they shall sing of the ways | of the | Lord:

that the glory | of the | Lord is | great.

6 For though the Lord is exalted, he looks u- | pon the | lowly:

and he comprehends the | proud | from a- | far.

7 Though I walk in the midst of danger, yet will you pre- | serve my | life:

you will stretch out your hand against the fury of my enemies,

and | your right | hand shall | save me.

8 The Lord will complete his | purpose | for me:

your loving-kindness, O Lord, endures for ever;

do not forsake the | work of | your own | hands. REFRAIN
