5. Choosing a Site for the Radiohead
The remote radio head is a heat dissipating unit and so it will run at a temperature notably above the
local ambient. If the temperatures of the unit become excessive the unit will run less efficiently,
therefore the unit must always be mounted vertically as detailed in these instructions, in an area
with unrestricted airflow/ventilation.
Solar radiation can also significantly increase the temperature of the unit and so should be taken
into consideration when choosing a location for the unit. In particular it is recommended that the
finned surfaces should be shaded from the sun. Ideally in the Northern Hemisphere the unit should
be located on a North facing wall where it is shaded from the sun; or in a location where an adjacent
object or building will offer similar shade. In the Southern hemisphere the unit is should ideally be
located on a South facing wall.
In areas where the temperature can be considered to be moderately warm, or the ambient
temperature could reach temperatures of approaching 30°C or above and shade is not given to the
unit by any of the adjacent walls or buildings then a solar shield should be fitted to the unit.

7.1.3 Tighten the pair of nuts against the brackets to a torque of 5Nm.
7.1.4 Thread a nut and washer onto the free end of each stud as shown in Figure 7.1,
ensuring that these nuts will not foul the second bracket before it has been
tightened against the pole.
7.1.5 Position the bracket at the required height and orientation, and slide the second
bracket into position over the free end of the stud.
Note: You should always install the upper brackets first – and the hooks on this set should be
directed upwards.
7.1.6 Secure the brackets in position using a washer and nut on the outside face of to a
torque of 5Nm, as shown in Figure 7.2.
7.1.7 The inner nuts installed in step 7.1.4 should now be wound out to secure the

7.1.8 Repeat steps 7.1.2 to 7.1.7 for the lower bracket assembly, positioning the pair of
brackets approximately 350mm beneath upper set of brackets, with the hooks
facing downwards and the nuts only finger tight (so that the brackets don’t fall
down the pole but can be easily moved).
7.1.9 Position RRH so the slots in the top wall mounting bracket locate over the hooks
on the upper pole mount bracket assembly (See Fig 7.3).
7.1.10 Slide the lower pair of pole mounting brackets down the pole until the hooks
locate into the slots on the lower unit mounting bracket.
7.1.11 Secure the lower pair of pole mounting brackets firmly in position as per the 7.1.6

8. Cable Attachment to the RRH
All caps or bungs should be removed just prior to connection, after mounting of the unit to the wall
or pole. Optical [refer to AceAxis document 125-10001-018] and DC connections should not be
made if the environment or weather is likely to allow water or dust ingress to the unit as these
connection points are only IP rated once the seal is made. The connection procedure of the cables
could be as follows (see Fig 8.1 for RRH connector identifications):
8.1.1 Earth Cable.
Attach an approved, correctly terminated Earth Cable (AWG10 minimum diameter), using the
2 x M6 earth screws and washers provided. Tighten to 5Nm.
Note: It is critical that this is the first cable connected to the RRH. Under no
circumstances should a unit be commissioned without adequate grounding.
8.1.2 Antenna Port Cables (1-2).
Attach the two antenna cables, in order, with N type connectors and tighten the coupling nut
to 1Nm.
Note: It is not recommended that any ports remain unterminated, as this could lead to
degradation of the connector material if left exposed to the environment and prevent
easy installation of a cable at a later date.
8.1.3 Optical Fiber Port (1-2).
Clip the LC connector into the relevant SFP, and slide the rubber sealing boot up the cable
and into the sealing port [refer to AceAxis document 125-10001-018].;

2 x 20W Phase 2 RRH Installation Instructions
AXIS COMPANY PROPRIETARY 14/5
Note: The correct SFPs should have already been installed into the RRH (in a suitable
anti-static environment prior to mounting). If a port is not to be used for any reason, the
weather resistant bung should remain in place and be kept, sealed to prevent any ingress
of dust or moisture.
8.1.4 Remote Electrical Tilt (RET): Optional Connection.
Line up the relevant cable so that the electrical connections and guide pin in the connector are
all aligned with those in the receptacle. Insert the connector into the receptacle on the RRH
and tighten the screw thread until the cable is secured in place and the relevant seal has been
made.
Note: If the RET connection is not used, then the shipping cap must be left securely in
place to prevent the ingress of water or dust.
8.1.5 External Alarms: Optional Connection.
8.1.6 DC Power Connection.
Attach the DC power connector (-48Vdc) using an appropriately assembled Harting cable
assembly. The connector has a pivoting latch that should be pulled across and locked into
position onto the two locating dowels (See Appendix A for more details).

8.1.7 Sealing All Used Connectors
Whilst these units have been designed and qualified to an appropriate standard to ensure it is
suitably protected against ingress during its operational life, AceAxis Ltd are unable to
control the standard and consistency of installations. Subsequently it is strongly recommended
that appropriate environmental sealing tape is applied to all antenna connections, the fiber
optic connections, DC power connection and all other optional fitted cables / connectors to
prevent water ingress or corrosion of the connector joints/threads.

Appendix A. DC Supply Connection
The minimum tools required to assemble a Harting DC Connector are:
• 2mm Hexagonal Allen key.
• Wire strippers.
A.1 DC Supply Connector
The standard power connector is a Harting Han Q, the connectors are both wired as follows (Table
A1). Care should be taken to observe the correct pin location on the connector in the case of
reverse-sex contacts.
Pin Attribute 1 Positive Return (Red) 2 Negative Supply (Black) 3 On the mating (RRH) connector this pin is connected to the Chassis Earth (Green/yellow)
Table A1: DC Supply Pinout Conventions
The cable housing can accept cable gauge AWG 8-12. A cable sheath should be used for outdoor
deployments that will provide an environmental seal between the connector and the cable. Either
can be fitted although the cable gauge determines the maximum length of power cable that can be
supported (See A2 for more details).
For convenience the manufacturer’s part numbers (for a recommended Cable Connector assembly)
are listed below (Table A2). The correct connector must be used to give the IP65 or higher
protection.

A.2 Recommended Maximum Power Supply Cable Length.
The power cable should be AWG 8-12 minimum gauge, specified to NEC/CEC.ANSI/NFPA70.
The cable length should be sufficient to make sure that the cable voltage drop under highest current
load does not increase the input voltage at the RRH above -36V.
The maximum allowable cable length can be calculated using the following equation;
Maximum cable length (m) = 1000 × (VPSU - 36) / (IMAX × 2 × CableRES)
Where:
IMAX is the maximum current
VPSU is the source voltage (in this case 48V)
CableRES is the cable resistance* (expressed as Ω/Km).
* This value will depend upon the manufacturer and gauge of cable.
The following table (Table A3) shows the range for each AWG cable size.
AWG Diameter Turns of Wire
