Back when MTV played music videos, Ialways looked forward to this time ofthe year. Why? I couldn’t wait to see

what the top 100 videos of the year wouldbe, and especially which video would becrowned No. 1. I always rooted for thosefrom ‘NSYNC.

While I no longer hold my breath for thetop music videos of the year, I do get excit-ed for the many other lists: “Top NewsStories,” “Biggest Fashion Mistakes,” “BestPhotographs,” etc.

This week, I decided to put together myown list. In compiling such a list, I’ve discov-ered that I’ve been fortunate to learn manythings when it comes to the home. Whilesome tips were more difficult to grasp thanothers, my favorites are handy solutions

that anyone can implement. Here they are, in no particular order:

• Remove water stains from wooden tableswith mayonnaise. Cover the stain with may-onnaise and let sit for at least 15 minutes.

Older stains may require more time.

• When attempting to loosen a nut thatwon’t budge, touch a lit candle to it. Themelted wax will act as a lubricant.

• To maximize storage space in your refrig-erator, pantry, closet or any other area, choose square containers over round ones.

• If you accidentally break a light bulb whileit’s in the socket, remove it by using half ofan unpeeled potato. Just remember to turnoff the power to the light before doing this.

• Defog a mirror with a hair dryer. A blastof hot or cold air should do the trick.

• Keep your bar soap from melting all overyour tub/shower by resting it on a spongeon your soap dish.

• Clean up pet hair by running your handover hair-covered surfaces while wearing arubber dishwashing glove.

• For slippery lids that won’t seem to

open, tie a rubber band around the top forextra grip. This works for every type oftwist-on cover, including nail polish bottles.

• Keep your tools free from rust by plac-ing a few pieces of chalk in each compart-ment that has metal tools or hardware.

• When painting, wrap fixtures such asdoorknobs and hinges with foil to protectthem from drips.

As I reflect back on 2012 and all thewonderful things I learned and projects I’vetackled, I get even more excited for what’sto come.

W ith the numberof house fires onthe rise where

the cause of the fire wasdetermined to be electri-cal, you have to wonder, could they have been pre-vented?

Fires are not only dam-aging to your property, theycan potentially put yourfamily, neighbors and theirproperties at risk as well.

If your home was builtmore than 40 years agoand has not had any electri-cal upgrades, there’s a goodchance your wiring doesnot meet today’s safetystandards as dictated bythe National ElectricalCode (NEC). The NECstates the requirements forsafe electrical installations. It is part of the NationalFire Codes series publishedby the National FireProtection Association(NFPA). Homes of this agewill often have three typesof wiring: Aluminum (asopposed to copper), knob-and-tube wiring and two-conductor wiring.

Aluminum wire does notconduct electricity as wellas copper does, and has ahigher resistance. Overtime, aluminum wire candeteriorate, become brittleand result in breakage.

Knob-and-tube wiringconsists of ceramic knobs

and tubes thatthe wire attachesto or passesthrough (joists orstuds). Knob-and-tube wiringuses protectiveceramic tubesplaced in the holes to pre-vent the wire from chafingagainst the structure. It isnot a grounded system, therefore it increases yourrisk for electrical shock haz-ards.

Two-conductor cable is acable without a groundconductor, also known asbare-copper wire. Aground conductor acts asan additional safety con-ductor that provides a pathto ground during a shortcircuit. This helps to reducethe chance of an electricalfire.

The potential for a firehazard for these first twoitems are so great thatmost insurance companies

these days will not insurea home containing alu-minum or knob-and-tubewiring.

Here are indicatorsthat your home’s electri-cal wiring may needupgrading:

• If there are frequenttripping breakers• Crowded electrical panel• Dimming/flickering lights• Hot or discolored switchplates, cords or plugs• Light bulbs that consis-tently burn out• Buzzing/sizzling sounds• Burning smell• Arcs or sparks from anoutlet when plugging insomething

• Loose outlets• Cracked insulation aroundyour wires• Electrical shock whentouching a plug, cord, appli-ance or anything metal

The electrical strain on ahome these days canincrease because of manyfactors such as age andmajor home improvements

or renovations, andthe addition ofmajor appliances orequipment such asan air conditioner, extra refrigerator, oven, dishwasher,

washer and dryer, tank-lesselectric water heater, pho-tovoltaic systems and anelectric vehicle charger.

It is a good idea to haveyour home routinely inspect-ed by someone who isknowledgeable and qualified, and can point out and prop-erly repair any electrical haz-ards to keep you and yourhome safe. All G Electric is a

local company with a vastelectrical knowledge to helpspot potential electrical haz-ards. Its highly skilled electri-cians can handle all types ofinstallations and repairs.

The company hasrecently expanded its serv-ices to offer customers acomprehensive electricalinspection and testing toevaluate the home’s safetyand efficiency. This inspec-tion allows them to pointout any areas of concernand potential fire hazard.Call today to schedule anelectrical assessment at531-2554 (ALLG).

Have you been wanting to remodel your kitchen, buthaven’t had the time to do it? This holiday season, you can finally give yourself the gift you’ve been

longing for.Even though many of Hawaii’s kitchens are built into

small spaces, getting creative and smartly designing yourrenovation will allow you to maximize the space. CSDesign Builders’ designers will start with your vision andshow you all the creative things you can do to yourkitchen. As a single point of accountability, they’ll help youthroughout the entire build process until the finishingtouches are complete.

Here are some things to consider when renovating yourkitchen:

Counter spacePlan to cover as much of your kitchen as you can with

countertops. A lot of counter space lets you work morecomfortably. Plan your kitchen with deeper countertopsfor more space. Granite is very affordable today, and it’s agreat material that is both functional and beautiful. CSDesign Builders can even install butcher block countertopsections or islands alongside granite for chopping andpreparing food.

StorageSqueeze as many cabinets into your design as possible

and plan to place cabinets in relation toappliances. Deep cabinets that can holdplates should be located near the dishwash-er or sink. The fewer unnecessary steps needed to com-plete a task, the smoother the function of your kitchen willbe. Waist-high sliding shelves for mixers and toastersquickly put small appliances out of sight while keepingthem easily accessible. You can also use a roll-out pantrywith shelves that can be pulled out for the items you have, but rolled back into the cabinet. CS Design Builders has awide variety of creative cabinet solutions.

SinksA small kitchen does not have to have a small sink. A

large sink will make it easier for you to clean large pots andpans, and it’s a great place to stash the dirty pots beforeyou have a chance to rinse them.

Maybe it’s time you get the kitchen your heart really

desires. CS Design Builders is Hawaii’s one-stop shop forall your renovation needs, and specializes in keeping yourrenovations as hassle-free and worry-free as possible. Takethe first step in making your dream come true.

Don’t let thebed bugs bite

BY RACHEL BREIT

You know the saying, “Sleep tight and don’t let thebed bugs bite.” Well, what if you wake up with itchybites, see black spots on your bed linens, or worse,

notice the small, flat, oval and wing-less bugs on your bed?Don’t panic. You’re not the only one with this problem.

Bed bugs are running rampant across the nation. Theproblem has grown to epidemic sizes, especially in all majorcities and international hubs. And the premise that bed bugsare a sign of a dirty, messy home is simply not true.

“We get calls every day from people who have bedbugs, some of whom are ashamed to admit it,” said RichardLee of Islander Pest Solutions. “We explain to them howeasy it is to get bed bugs. Anyone can get them.”

People can unintentionally pick up bed bugs from high-traffic, public areas such as movie theaters, restaurants, pub-lic transportation, libraries, hotels, airports and even sec-ond-hand furniture stores. Bed bugs hitch rides on clothes, purses, bags, luggage, boxes and back-packs, and spread toplaces like your home.

If you discover bed bugs or see evidence of them in yourhome, seek help immediately. The longer you wait to treat theproblem, the more likely the infestation will increase andspread to other areas of your home. Bed bugs are not knownto transfer any type of diseases to humans, but they need aconstant supply of blood meals in order to grow to adult-hood. This process usually takes five to eight weeks. In an 18-month life span, an adult female can produce up to 500 eggs.

Fortunately, the bed bug specialists at Islander PestSolutions know exactly how to treat an infestation. Their phi-losophy is to treat the entire home or apartment, not just

the single room or area where you believe the problem isoccurring. Bed bugs are rarely contained to one location andeventually spread to other rooms throughout a home.

Islander Pest Solutions uses a combination of steam andEPA-registered chemicals specifically targeted to eliminate bedbugs. Steam is applied to all types of surfaces including, but notlimited to: mattresses, box-springs, futons, head-boards, pillows, sofas, chairs, recliners, desks and drawers. Even electrical out-lets near the infestation are checked for hidden bed bugs andtreated. The initial treatment usually takes at least two or morehours to complete, depending on the size of your home.Weekly follow-up inspections are performed after the initialtreatment to ensure the infestation has been eradicated.

Remember, prevention is the key to avoiding re-infesta-tion, so be aware of your surroundings and check yourclothing, bags, furniture and suitcases for signs of bed bugs.

Call Islander Pest Solutions for a free estimate and besure to ask about its holiday specials.

Whether you want to install it your-self or have a professional do it,The Cool Roof Store can show

you why a silicone-based roof coating maybe the last roof you will ever need. Whetheryou have a flat roof or a shingle roof, siliconecoatings can stand the test of time.

Look around any neighborhood in Hawaiiand you will see a real change taking place— the “Cool Roof” revolution. Instead oftearing off your old asphalt roof and haulingit to the dump every 10 to 15 years, chooseto save money by having your existing roofcoated with a long lasting coating that iswarranted up to 50 years.

Silicone coatings have so many positivepoints that it’s easy to see why they aregrowing in popularity every day. In fact, theyhave become the leading roof system thatthe Cool Roof Store sells over the last year.Lets look at a few reasons why.

Silicone coatings will withstand heavyponding water indefinitely. Because theyare not water-based like acrylic coatings, they don’t absorb moisture. While top-endacrylics — when reinforced with RoofFabric — can withstand moderate pondingwater, silicones are in a league of their own.

These coatings will not chalk off overtime. Silicone is a “non-sacrificial” coating, meaning it will not slowly shed as the yearsgo by. How long will it last? Gaco, the oldestand largest brand, offers a 50-year materialwarranty against defects in the coating. If you

have your silicone roof installed by anauthorized contractor, you get a manufac-tures labor and material warranty for up to20 years — the industry’s gold standard.

With silicone coatings, the entire roof willnot need to be reinforced with roof fabric, saving a lot of time and money.

In some cases, homeowners may want toreinforce a few “weak-knee” areas — likethe perimeter drip edge or a skylight curb— with roof fabric. However, in most casesit’s not needed. The Gaco Peel and Stickroof fabric is an easy and inexpensive way todo this. Even easier is the Gaco Liquid RoofTape, a thick, buttery caulking, which is sim-ply applied with a brush.

Because you need less material — as littleas 2 gallons per 100 square feet if your roofis smooth — the cost is about the same asa quality acrylic roof system, which needs 4to 5 gallons per 100 square feet.

What are the things you need to look out for?

If you have a rough, dry “cap sheet roof,”

you may need to first apply a base coat ofeither silicone or acrylic to seal off thethirsty roof below.

Only apply the silicone when the roof isabsolutely dry, including any base coats youinstalled. Silicone is a vapor barrier, which isgreat as a protection against pondingwater, but may bubble if the roof below iswet. Not to worry, though, because anybubbling can be easily and inexpensivelyfixed by popping the bubbles and touchingup with a dab of coating.

A coated silicone roof is slippery whenwet. The moment it even sprinkles youwant to get off the roof before it becomesa slippery slide. Leave those mangoes foranother day.

Always reinforce loose roof seams and

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Last yearyou had an easy-to-follow method for how toclose out the year and open up to new begin-nings in our homes and in our minds. It wasvery helpful for me and my family. Can youoffer some advice as we turn into 2013?

It’s hard to believe that in just two moredays we’ll be saying, “Happy New Year,”once again. I know I am not the only

one who felt the swift passing of time in2012. Well, time is still accelerating, so it’smore important than ever to set yourintentions and be present with your life, otherwise you will get to the end of 2013feeling that you failed to maximize yourpotential and your possibilities.

Your home and environment can sup-port you in what you want to create in thenew year, but you must first gain clarityabout what you want. Start by lookingwithin.

Ask yourself what you wantWhat do you want for yourself this year?

Take some time to think about what’simportant to you and then set the intent tocreate it. The clearer you are, the better andeasier your year will unfold. At the beginningof every year, I ask myself what I want toexperience in all the areas of my life. Then, just like one would plan a vacation, I takethree days off to get clear, envision, developstrategies and plan the year ahead becauseI know it is important to my success.

I am always amazed at how much I col-lect in just one year, and I am acutely aware

that we are energetically tied to things inour environment. So I set aside an extratwo days before the year ends to preparemy home to support me in all of myendeavors in the year ahead by clearingout the unnecessary accumulations in myhome, freeing the energy to help me reachmy highest potential.

Now, if your home is not yet preparedfor the new year, don’t worry! ChineseNew Year, determined by the lunar calen-dar, is Feb. 10, so you still have plenty oftime to get things ready. It’s helpful to thinkof the new year as an important and wel-come “guest.” By clearing out the old, youphysically and energetically create space forthis new year “guest.”

If you don’t know where to start, use thepoints below as a guide. Engage every per-son in the house to get ready for “out withthe old, in with the new” feng shui action.

Out with the old

1. DiscardPut your mind in “I’m on a mission

mode.” Then, go from roomto room putting in a trashbag everything that you nolonger use or need. Stay nolonger than 10 minutes ineach area.

Get rid of expired fooditems in the refrigerator andcabinets, old newspapers, junk mail, chipped cups, oldcosmetics, burnt down can-dles, broken items, warpedTupperware and other thingsthat no longer serve you. Bequick and snappy. This is aneasy step that takes nothought at all.

2. DonateNext, in a large plastic bag,

put clothes you haven’t worn,CDs, books, figurines andother items with which youno longer resonate. For largeitems, make a list and sched-

ule a day to remove them from your home. For now, remove the items that will fit into afew bags. Don’t think too much. Just do it. Ifyou have a hard time letting things go, imag-ine the smile on the person who needs theitem more than you do.

3. Clear and cleanClutter creates lethargy and overwhelm.

To make space to welcome the opportuni-ties for the upcoming year, clear off surfaceswhere things have settled — kitchen coun-ters, dining room tables and bathroom sur-faces.

In with the new

1. Stock up on foodFood symbolizes abundance and health.

Fill your pantry and stock your refrigeratorwith the type of food that you want to eatin 2013.

2. Bring in a new plantPlants symbolize growth and represent

the life force. Bring in a plant from your gar-

den, or better yet, purchase live plants andplace them in your home to represent a newand healthy beginning to the year. A displayof beautiful flowers is a positive symbol andrepresents reaching your highest potential.

3. Hang up new calendarsCalendars should represent the future,

so discard all of last year’s calendars so thatyou greet the new year by showing you arepresent and open to the future, not stuckin the past.

4. Freshen up the energyFor just a few minutes, open every door

and window to let go of the old year andenergy and welcome in the new, with avision to receive the best that life has to offer.

Take action for a great yearWhat you have in your home shows up

in the quality of your life. To raise your pos-itive experience of the upcoming year, set apositive intent throughout your home bytaking out what you no longer want andbringing in what you do. A happy homesupports you in living a happy life. Here’s toa fantastic close to 2012. See you againwith more insight to help you in your life in2013!

Rev up for the newyear with a revampIf you’re tired of looking at your out-

dated kitchen, but feel replacementwould be impractical, you’re not

alone. In 2013, consumers will be tryingto find the beauty in the beast. Projectsthat help the old look new will be thenext big makeover trend — especially inthe kitchen, where remodeling becomesmore pricey.

“Revamping kits” that refinish counter-tops, cabinets and appliances are alreadyin growing demand. Here are three topkitchen kits that can easily, quickly andaffordably help your existing kitchen lookhigh end.

Granite remains the No. 1 choice forkitchen remodels, but the standard costof granite runs from $50 to $110 asquare foot (including installation). Whilethere’s nothing functionally wrong withlaminate, Corian and Formica, they’re notalways what homeowners are lookingfor. So if your countertops need an upliftwithout a hefty price tag attached, trygranite paint.

Giani Granite Paint kits allow you togive outdated countertops a granite look

for $69.95 per kitchen. Each kit comeswith the primer, mineral paints, applica-tors and a demo DVD to help youupdate your Formica, laminate, wood, tileand Corian countertops. One granite kitcan transform an average L-shapedkitchen countertop (or about 16 runningfeet) in one weekend and the process iseasy enough for a first-time painter. Theincluded specialized sponge replicatespopular styles of granite, and the high-gloss finish adds durability and shine.Further granite countertop paint infor-mation and availability can be found atgianigranite.com.

Modern cabinets are what everyoneneeds to bring their kitchen from “old-fashioned” to “in fashion.” However, throwing the old cabinets out may seemdrastic. If your cabinets work just fine butthe color is keeping your kitchen in the’90s, try Nuvo Cabinet paint. NuvoCabinet paint is a one-day process thatdoes not require any cabinet removal ora separate primer. Just apply two coats ofyour desired Nuvo shade and withinhours your cabinets will be ready for use.

Each kit covers 100 square feet, which isthe standard cabinet coverage for theaverage-sized kitchen. One kit costs$69.95 and can be purchased from nuvocabinetpaint.com.

Appliances are a big investment andmany times are purchased all at once toachieve a harmonious, matching look.

This holds many homeowners back frommaking the jump toward the mostdesired appliance look, stainless. NewLiquid Stainless Steel paint is made with100 percent stainless steel; and kits areavailable for refrigerators as well asranges and dishwashers. The stainless“Range and Dishwasher” kit gives a

Kitchen cabinets are intendedto be functional, but fewdesign professionals or

homeowners leave the choice sim-ply at that. Otherwise, cardboard orplywood boxes might suffice.

Instead, kitchen cabinet choiceshave become hotly debated as the

options have grown. This is truewhether for a kitchen, bathroom, family room, bedroom, wine cellar, closet or any space in a home.

A major impetus has been therealization that kitchen cabinets canadd an important aesthetic cacheto the kitchen, thanks to the wider

variety of styles, materials, trims, hardware and pulls available.

They’ve become part of the jew-elry of a house— what makes ahouse a home. People are putting inan inordinate number of cabinets inall rooms these days, even in windowseats because they increase space.

For the kitchen and beyond, consider new cabinetry.

Last week, I told you how the glint ofgold always makes me think ofChristmas, while the shine and

sparkle of silver are all about the new year, filled with bright new beginnings and cele-bration. This week I’m presenting tips abouthow you can take white-hot metallic andadd some sparkle and shine to your space— and not just for this New Year’s, but foryears to come.

Just as gold is a warm metal and worksfabulously with warm colors, silver is a coolmetal that’s ideal for cool colors such asblues, purples and pinks. Some colors canbe both warm and cool, so just keep inmind that cooler, brighter shades usuallywork better with silver. If a color is light-ened by white, it’s generally cooler, while ifit has some yellow, orange, red or brown,it’s generally warmer.

For example, in this bedroom I designedin Kahala, the homeowner wanted some-thing calming, romantic, vibrant and unique. So I chose purple, the color of passion, asan accent color on the wall behind the bed.

Cool colors prevailed: The surroundingwalls were painted in a very light lilac, thefurniture was a dark ebony, and the bed-ding was white and charcoal with a pop ofsilver in an accent pillow. To make sure theroom felt fresh and clean, the lamps weremade of white glass.

But I wanted to repeat the silver andhave something interesting and unique onthat purple wall. So I made an abstractdesign with images of birds or clouds invarying sizes and mounted them at varyingdepths of half an inch to a couple of inchesfrom the wall. These silver accents createdinterest, dimension and just the right touchof subtle bling for a one-of-a-kind, relaxingand dramatic bedroom.

Now, how can you incorporate silverinto your space during the holidays in away that can last well beyond the newyear? Just as I told you about gold, there are

so many different textiles and fabrics in sil-ver : bright silver fabrics, ikats with silver inthem, faux animal skins and pewter and sil-ver textiles that can be used to reupholsteror create accents for your furniture piecesor for window treatments.

And as I told you last week, it’s easy to

add the cool bling of silver by spray-paint-ing branches or even dried leaves.

A great thing about silver is that it canhave a reflective quality. If you have a littlebit of silver and want to enhance that, adding some mirrors or glass to a spacecan help give it a very modern feel. To

incorporate silver without the modern feel,go for a more weathered look as in pewteror brushed silver. Antique silver or pewterwill add a more eclectic element.

A super-easy and affordable way to addsilver is with picture frames. There are tonsof options out there from a wide array ofstores, with looks that range from poundedmetal or scratched wood to shiny ormatte, with ornate or clean lines. Next toblack, silver is probably the most accessiblepicture frame. Use several of these toshowcase your favorite family photos orcreate your own unique works of art byblowing up images to make your own artwall with various-size frames. Want to be alittle bit more subtle? Go with black framesand add silver matting.

It’s the holidays, the beginning of a newyear. So enjoy your celebrations and bringon the sparkle and shine!

From shopping and baking to decorating, life gets hec-tic during the holidays. But regardless, put this first onyour “to-do” list: Childproof the house!

Don’t spend your holidays in the emergency room. Takea few precautionary steps now to protect your children sothey, too, can enjoy the season:

When your kids smell the aroma of baking goodies, theynaturally want to be in the kitchen. Unless you can super-vise them carefully, keep them out. The kitchen is one of themost dangerous rooms in your home.

But just in case your kids do sneak into the kitchen whenyou’re not looking:

• Unplug electrical appliances, wrap up the cords and putthem away. Also, place covers over all electrical outlets. Bothcords and outlets are sources of electric shock.

• Put guards on stove knobs so your children cannot turnthem on when you’re not looking.

As you know, children can get hurt in any room of thehouse, not just the kitchen. So for their protection:

• Don’t let children under four have hard candies, nuts orsimilar seasonal foods. Hard, round foods such as candies, nuts, grapes, popcorn, raw carrots and even raisins can getlodged in children’s throats and block the passage of air .

• Poinsettia leaves are not fatal if swallowed, but can causea skin rash and severe upset stomachs. If a child ingests anyholiday plants, call 911 immediately.

During the holidays, you should also take extra care toprotect those ‘kids’ who have four legs and a tail. Pets aresusceptible to many of the same holiday dangers as chil-dren. Take the same precautions in the holiday season toprotect your pet as you do to protect your children.

Some of the safety tips on keeping your children safe at

home were provided by the National Safe Kids Campaign. For more information visit www.safekids.org.

A solar company dedicatedto helping the communityElementary school teacher Marilyn Hamano went

looking for a solar power company the way a stu-dent might solve a class problem.

“I had been researching photovoltaic systems for overa year, and I was determined to have one installed on myhome by the end of 2012,” she said. “I looked at a lot ofdifferent companies and what they offered were all verysimilar.”

But when she looked into Bonterra Solar, she found whatshe was looking for : a company that only dealt in qualityproducts, provided good service, answered all of her ques-tions and, as she discovered, a company with a heart.

“I read about how Bonterra does pro bono work forHabitat for Humanity, the volunteer organization that buildshomes for the needy at no cost,” she said. “I really liked thatBonterra gives back to the community.”

Habitat for Humanity: a natural fit for BonterraBonterra Solar founder and principal Andrew Yani has

made philanthropy a key part of his company’s mission.“In 2009, we began providing a free solar water heating

system for every Habitat for Humanity home built onOahu,” Yani said. “Giving back is part of our philosophy. Thesun gives us unlimited electrical power and we pass onthose blessings to our customers and charities. That is espe-cially important at this time of year when our thoughts turn

to those in need.”Bonterra also assisted the Department of Hawaiian

Home Lands in developing Kaupuni Village, the first net-zero energy community in the nation. And Yani has recentlybecome a Hawaii March of Dimes board member.

Employee’s dedication extends to schoolsHamano commended Bonterra employee Chad

Horiguchi for not only educating her on her new PV systemand answering all of her questions, but for going a step fur-

ther and offering to talk to her elementary schoolclass about solar power.

“We were having a Career Fair and Chadtalked to our students about his career as a ‘solarconsultant’,” she said. “He was a natural with thechildren and soon had them eagerly asking ques-

tions and interested in the whole solar-energy issue.”She said she was happily surprised at Bonterra’s total

commitment to educating the public about green energyand providing quality products and service.

“Even though I only needed nine panels, Bonterra mademe feel like a million-dollar client,” she said.

Founded by president Carl Gaumont in 1987, Pacific IsleContractors Ltd. has been building and remodelinghomes in the Islands for a quarter of a century.

Gaumont described the company as a small contracting busi-ness that has found its niche in residential remodeling. Projectsrange from kitchen and baths to large-scale renovations, addi-tions as well as new-home construction.

While Pacific Isle Contractors has completed many addi-tions and renovations over the years, older homes built in the1930s and 1940s are some of its favorite projects.

“We renovated a number of older homes in the Nuuanuand Manoa areas and appreciate the architecture of that era,”said Gaumont. “Some of these homes were considered ‘teardowns’ by other contractors, but after careful inspection, wefound them quite structurally sound.

“You need to put things in perspective. If you’re going tospend the money on a large scale renovation and 10 percentof that cost is necessary for repairs to the structure, you’reprobably ahead of the game once you figure in the replace-ment costs of one of these beautiful older homes.”

Oftentimes the clients will be living in the home while workis being done, so they are kept abreast of scheduling and thescope of work to be performed at any given time to minimizedisruption to their daily lives. “Communication is a high priority,”Gaumont said. “We want homeowners to know what toexpect on any given day, so we can address any issues thatmight arise. Our goal is to help you attain your dream home.”

Here is some feedback Pacific Isle Contractors Ltd. hasreceived from its clients:

It has been eight years since Pacific Isle Contractors did a verychallenging, major renovation and addition to our very uniqueKailua home. We were not only extremely happy with the results, but loved the experience of working together with Carl and ourarchitect, Paul Sheffield. We are now looking forward to working

with Carl once again, building a new home in Kahaluu.— Pau and Gail Switzer

We just completed renovating our home in Nuuanu, includingnew windows, siding and a family room addition with a beautifuldeck for entertaining friends and family. Our experience with Pac.Isle Contractors has been extremely enjoyable. Carl and his creware very professional and produce high-quality workmanship.

— Andre Lee

“Your renovation should be fun, not stressful, and Pacific IsleContractors works hard to earn your trust and confidence,”said Gaumont. “We want to be your contractor.”

The answer to yourroof-protection needsW ith more than 20 years of expe-

rience in Hawaii’s roofing andsolar industry, Surface Shield

Roofing’s Shon Gregory has seen the busi-ness change as materials and technologiesare adapted to the needs and priorities ofproperty owners.

“Our clients are becoming increasinglyconcerned with rising energy costs,”Gregory said. “Traditional technologies andmaterials are still in use, but we’re findingthat more and more people are looking toadvancements in roofing to help defraytheir costs.”

Because of our state’s dependence onimported oil, energy costs in Hawaii arethe highest in the U.S., and the need toreduce the price of cooling a home orbusiness has led to innovations. “The mar-ket demands that we work with the latestmaterials and technologies,” said Gregory,“because our clients want to save on theirenergy costs over the long term.”

“Cool roofing” is an approach that has avariety of cost and environmental benefits, and the number of home and businessowners adopting it is growing rapidly.

Because such coatings are applied to exist-ing roofing substrate, demolition that sendswaste to a landfill is unnecessary. Buildingsusing cool roof materials and technologiescan save up to 25 percent on energy costs.

Roof coatings are seamless and wheninstalled correctly, can solve roof leaks onalmost any type of roof substrate. Field-applied reflective roof coatings can extendthe useful life of most roof substrates, keeping the surface cool and providing alevel of protection from the sun andweather. Roof coatings can add 25-plusyears to the service life of a roof andreduce the amount of discarded roofingmaterials that end up in landfills.

“Large commercial properties were thefirst to embrace cool-roofing technologiesbecause of the size of their buildings,”explained Gregory. “But in the past years,we’ve seen a major spike in the number ofresidential property owners opting to gowith roof coating technologies previouslyused mostly by the commercial sector.”

Surface Shield uses a variety of roofcoating products. Here are a few benefitsof one of the highly efficient coatings

used daily by the team:

• 95 percent solid Silicone contains noVOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) thatwill evaporate into the air.

• Silicone coatings are the only non-sac-rificial coatings available. Other coating sys-tems will degrade with UV rays from thesun. Silicone does not degrade throughexposure to UV rays.

• Silicone coatings are capable of with-standing permanent ponding water withno effect on the product. Because of this, silicone coatings can be used to water-proof water fountains and man-madeponds. Ponding water will break downother coatings, making these soft and great-

ly reducing their life span.

• Silicone coatings will not support moldor mildew growth, nor will they blackenbecause of mold or mildew.

• Silicone coatings are fast-drying. Intropical climates, silicone is dry enough towalk on in two hours. This means multiplecoats can be applied in the same day. Workis completed sooner than with other coat-ings.

• Silicone will not wash out. Rain, even aminute after application, will not compro-mise silicone.

Hawaii’s only licensed dealer of Solar Frontier thin-film CIS solar panels

An ‘ideal’ solution for your PV needsW ith more than 200 solar companies

to choose from in Hawaii, it’s easyto get overwhelmed when shop-

ping for a photovoltaic (PV) system.Homeowners are advised to do their researchbecause anyone can install PV systems thesedays, but not everyone is truly qualified, andnot all systems are created equal.

2012 is wrapping up with many anxious toget their PV systems installed before the statetax credits change. But what about thosewho couldn’t get on the 2012 calendar?

It depends on how you look at it — wait-ing may have actually been in your favor.

A revolutionary, thin-film panel is nowavailable in Hawaii. Risource Energy founderand president Darren Furumoto selectedSolar Frontier CIS panels with Hawaii home-owners in mind. These innovative, Japanese-made panels are ideal for Hawaii homesbecause of their proven “light-soaking effect,”quality and price point. Furumoto is the firstin Hawaii to offer these modules for residen-tial PV installations.

What makes an ideal PV system? A systemthat will offer the most return for your moneywhile providing safe and enduring quality.

“Customers should be able to rely on theirsolar provider as an expert,” remarkedFurumoto. Each system from Risource

Energy is custom-designed tomaximize energy conversionand output.

Solar Frontier panels arenot only aesthetically pleasing— they’re safe and effective. They sit sleek and black on theroof, they’re lead- and cadmi-um-free and they’re proven to handleHawaii’s salt air conditions. Local and world-wide data confirm that Solar Frontier panelsharvest energy about 9 percent better thancrystalline panels.

Maybe you haven’t heard of Furumoto orhis thin-film panels, as he’s a modest, behind-the-scenes kind of guy. You may not even see

him much, because most days he’s up on theroof working. One thing is certain —Furumoto is well-qualified in PV installations. He’s one of eight NABCEP-certified installerson Oahu, and one of 20 in the entire state.NABCEP certification is esteemed in thesolar world as the gold standard in certifica-tion. He’s worked on thousands of installa-tions throughout his nearly 20 years in the

solar industry. Furumoto is “grateful to Bruce Ekimura” of

Alternate Energy Inc. and “fortunate to(have) gained first-hand knowledge andexperience working with a wide range ofmodules and inverters” during his time spentas operations manager and lead installer atAlternate Energy Inc.

The new name Risource is derived fromthe Japanese word “risou,” which translates to“dream” or “ideal” in English. Furumoto hasthe “risou” of a quality installation at a reason-able price for homeowners. A fresh namefelt right and reflected the transition frombeing a smaller division of highly respectedindustry leader Alternate Energy Inc. With anew name and fresh logo, Risource Energy isready to take the PV world by the helm.

If you’re looking for quality and expertisewith certification, you’ll want DarrenFurumoto and his team from RisourceEnergy on your roof.

For most, remodeling a kitchen includes a completechange of cabinets and countertop, maybe evenappliances. If your cabinets are still in good condi-

tion, but you want to improve your kitchen in some way, replacing your old countertop with one made of granite isa great choice. It is a good investment and will definitelychange the atmosphere.

Granite has high tolerance to cold and heat. You cansafely place hot metal pans from your oven directly on thegranite top without the need for a hot pad. Although, youwill have to be wary of placing hot glass or ceramic disheson it as they may crack if the countertop is too cold. Thishappens because of the difference in temperature and it iscalled thermal shock.

As for cold items, you do not need to worry about con-densation that may make your granite countertop have adark spot if not properly sealed. Any condensation thatmay happen in the stone will fade away in an hour.

Granite countertops may be used as a cutting board, too. Because the hardness of granite is greater than steel, you do not need to worry about kitchen knives scratchingyour granite surface. Although, it is not recommended toalways cut on your granite countertop, as it will actuallymake your knife dull overtime.

Another way to add to your kitchen or other rooms isto create a standalone island with cabinets as the base. Itwill be a great place to sit, eat, work, study or hang out.

Along with brand new cabinets and countertops, thereare other ways to improve your kitchen to be more func-tional and last longer. Pull-out drawers are a great add-

on for existing kitchen cabinets. With metal ball-bearingtracks and solid wood dovetail drawers, you will neveragain need to worry about hard-to-reach items in theback.

“Fusing Custom Cabinets with Affordability”

20% OFFCustom Cabinets for December Only

The key to a restful nightof sleep: your bedroomWhether snuggling in for the night or just trying to

take a nap, your environment plays an importantrole. From noise reduction to lighting, there are a

few easy ways you can turn your bedroom into a tranquiloasis so you can count “Zzzs” and not sheep.

“A third of the adult population suffers from insomniafrom time to time, but only about 6 percent meet the cri-teria for an actual sleep disorder,” said Dr. Christina Brownfrom the Florida School of Professional Psychology atArgosy University, Tampa. “In a good number of cases, get-ting to sleep and staying asleep is a matter of your sur-roundings.”

Kristina Held, assistant professor of interior design at TheArt Institute of Charlotte suggested areas of the bedroomto evaluate in order to improve your sleep:

LightingHang several layers of curtains to block out light at night.

Get rid of your phones, TVs and iPads while in bed. The arti-ficial light will interrupt your sleep cycle and keep your brain

activated. Humans were created to be in-synch with the sun cycle, so positioning yourbed to the east will help you to wake upnaturally.

BeddingTry to use only natural fiber for your bed-

ding such as cotton, organic cotton, silk orlinen blend. Hypoallergenic pillows prevent allergies.

Furniture and decorUse neutral colors, blues and greens to evoke the calming

feelings of nature. Avoid using reds, which can make you feelawake.

Add decoration with an area rug that will also reducenoise. A white noise machine or ceiling fan can drown outbackground noise too. Include some inspiring artwork thatbrings you feelings of calm.
