Suhayta Ben Allaway This song grew out of a performing troupe of international students at Waldorf College, Forest City, Iowa, and is now featured in Ben Allaway’s “Singing and the Culture of Peace” choral festivals. The troupe needed a name so members wrote on the chalkboard words in their language that had connections with peace, greetings, cooperation, music dance, or general culture. They ultimately chose “Sahayta”, which is the Sanskrit word for “helpfulness.”

Suliram Indonesian Folk Song This is a gentle Indonesian folk song built upon a pentatonic scale. It is a gentle rocking lullaby that translates to: A mother is singing to her child, “I have waited for you so long. Now that I have found you, I will never let you go.”

Kookaburra Australian Folk Song Kookaburra is an Australian folk song that has been a part of camp experiences for many American young people. Often it has been their first experiences in round singing. The kookaburra is an Australian bird like the kingfisher, with a large-crested head and a short tail. Its call sounds like loud laughter, as the text of the song indicates. The “bush” in the song is the central part of Australia, where it is so dry that only little bushes grow.

6:00 P.M. CONCERT PROGRAM The Turtle Dove English Folk Song

Fare you well, my dear, I must be gone, The sea will never run dry, And leave you for awhile; Nor the rocks never melt with the sun, If I roam away But I never will prove false, I’ll come back again, To the bonny lass I love, Though I roam ten thousand miles. Till all these things be done. So fair thou art, my bonny lass, O yonder doth sit that little turtle dove, So deep in love am I; He doth sit on yonder high tree, But I never will prove false a-making a moan for the loss of his love, To the bonny lass I love, as I do for thee. Till the stars fall from the sky.

The Peace of the Wild Things Joan Szymko

When despair for the world grows in me And I wake in the night at the least sound In fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake Rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things Who do not tax their lives with forethought Of grief. I come in to the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
