(Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” Jesus wanted to heal the man’s soul as well as his body. He wanted the man to repent—to turn away from sin and turn to obedience. Sin would keep him from following Jesus and having eternal life.) Will you repent of sin and follow Jesus? Will you allow Jesus to make you well and give you eternal life? Will you begin now to walk with Jesus each day? Dear Parents,

We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and working through this booklet together.

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE:

John 5:1-15

BIBLE STORY SUMMARY:

Jesus found a lame man beside the pool and asked him, “Do you want to get well?” Jesus healed the man’s legs, and he could walk again. Jesus wanted the man to have eternal life and told him to turn away from sin.

LESSON FOCUS:

To understand that I am sick with sin and only Jesus can make me well.

To understand that Jesus tells me, “Stop sinning. Come, follow Me.”

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT GOD:

God sent Jesus to take away my sin so that I can walk with Him.

LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE LEARNED:

1. In Jerusalem, Jesus walked to the pool of Bethesda. What was this place like? (Around the pool lay many sick people who were hoping to be healed. They believed that when the water stirred, God had sent an angel to heal the first person to make it into the water.)

2. Jesus asked a man who was lame if he wanted to get well. Why wouldn’t the man answer, “Yes,” right away. (He had been lame for 38 years and he answered that he didn’t have anyone to help him into the pool. He may have given up hope. Also, he did not know this was Jesus, who had the power to heal.)

3. Did Jesus cure the man? (Yes, He told him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” The man was cured im-mediately and did as Jesus told him to do.)

4. When Jesus later saw the man at the temple, what did He tell him? (Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” Jesus wanted to heal the man’s soul as well as his body. He wanted the man to repent—to turn away from sin and turn to obedience. Sin would keep him from following Jesus and having eternal life.)

Will you repent of sin and follow Jesus? Will you allow Jesus to make you well and give you eternal life?

Will you begin now to walk with Jesus each day?

Tuesday—Jesus Sees The Lame Man

What kind of things would Jesus have seen about the man’s heart—what he was

thinking and feeling? Circle the words that you think tell about the man’s feelings.

Tired Lonely Sad Hopeless Other_______________

What kind of things would Jesus have seen when he looked at this man?

He was sitting on a mat.

His legs wouldn’t hold him up to walk.

He was sitting alone, without anyone to help him.

Can you think of anything else? ________________________________

Do you believe that Jesus

sees everything that you are

thinking and feeling?

Yes

Maybe

No

Read Psalm 139:1-4

Will you bow your head and tell Jesus how it makes

you feel to know that He knows all about you and

understands you?

Are you worried or sad about anything? Is there

something you’re angry about? Are you feeling

guilty? Tell Jesus all about it—He understands

how you feel, and He wants to change your heart.

Jesus sees you inside and out!

Page 4: 1,2,3 grades 2 16 14

Can you think how the man felt when he was healed after

being unable to walk for 38 years? He probably jumped,

ran, danced and sang all the way down the street!

If you had been healed after being lame for 38 years,

what would the title of your song be?

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

What question did Jesus ask the lame man? (verse 6)

“Do you want to ______________

_____________?”

Why do you think the man did not say “YES” right away?

He really liked staying on his mat by the pool all day.

After being paralyzed for so long, he didn’t want to get his hopes up.

He felt mad at all the people who always got to the water before him.

He didn’t know that the man talking to him was Jesus, who healed people.

Did the man know who had healed him? (verse 13)

Yes

No

How many lines of our memory verse can you say without peeking?

Later that day the man went to the temple to say, “Thanks”

to God. He was glad to be well after being unable to walk for so long. The man

brought a special offering.

Who came to talk to the man at the temple? (Verse 14)

_______________________________________________

What did Jesus say to the man?

“Stop ____________________ or something

___________________________ may happen to you.”

Jesus told the man that his sin was a much bigger problem than not being able to

use his legs. His sin was keeping the man from walking with Jesus and having eternal

life.

Jesus wanted the man to be able to walk. What else did Jesus want for the man?

Jesus wanted to heal the man’s soul from sin.

He wanted the man to have eternal life—to be Jesus’ friend on earth and to be

with Him in heaven after he died.

All of the above.

Jesus wanted the man to have his sins forgiven.

He wanted the man to have eternal life so he could always walk with Jesus.
