PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – The final week of registration for Central Arizona College’s 2012 spring semester will take place Jan. 3-7. “Typically students have

until the second or third week of January to register for the spring semester because the semester traditionally has started in mid-January,” Tom Di Camillo, CAC’s director of public relations, explained. “But the 2012 spring semester begins earlier this year and we want to make sure students wanting to register for classes don’t miss out on the many terrific opportunities CAC is providing this spring.”

The 2012 spring semester starts on Monday, Jan. 9, with CAC’s Weekend College program beginning on Friday night, Jan. 6. Although CAC is closed for Winter Break through Monday, Jan. 2, students may register online during the break. Staff will be available at the district’s 10 locations Jan. 3-7 during the final week of registration. Instead of redeeming holiday gift cards from Visa, MasterCard and American Express for electronic accessories, clothing and items that may depreciate in value, students can invest those

dollars in a college education that brings a much greater return on investment. At Central Arizona College, students can use gift cards from credit card companies to begin their higher education journey – or to just pay their spring semester tuition. CAC has developed six easy steps for anyone to earn college credits, take personal interest classes, pick up non-degree or community education classes, or explore the more than 75 degree and certificate programs offered by the institution. Students entering college for the first time or returning

after an extended break should request a MAP - or Master Academic Plan - to help maximize their educational experience. Transfer students or students taking non-degree courses also may follow the same MAP for easy entry into Central Arizona. Continuing students – defined as those who were enrolled in the previous semester – may start with Step 3 of the six-step process; however, they are urged to meet with an academic advisor to review their progress in their selected program.Step 1 - Apply to Central Arizona College

Who can attend? Just about anyone. “Central Arizona College is a public institution of higher education with an open admission policy,” Dr. Doris Helmich, CAC’s interim president, said. “An open admission policy means that admission to the college and access to educational opportunities may be granted to any person without regard to age, completion or non-completion of a high school diploma or GED, physical disability, economic status, and social or ethnic background.” For further information

on admission procedures, potential students are encouraged to call their local campus or the college’s customer service help desk at 520-494-5111. Students will receive orientation information by mail with the admission acceptance letter. “We have simplified the application process so taking that first step toward a college education is not so overwhelming,” Helmich said. Prospective students should complete and submit a Central Arizona College admission form prior to attending

By Nolberto Waddell The Lady Lobo and boys Lobo varsity teams traveled to Ray High School on Dec. 17, 19 and 20 to play in the Second Annual Copper Invitational Basketball Tournament. Both teams played four games in the three day tournament with the Lobo boys’ team only able to win one game and the Lady Lobos taking two games. The Lady Lobos had the honor

of playing the first game of the tournament taking on a very tall, running and defensively intense playing Lady Titan team from Chandler Prep Academy. The Lady Lobo team playing shorthanded with a few players missing because of holiday commitments, gave the Lady Titans all they could handle. Hayden took a two point lead at the end of the first period, 8-6. The Titans came back in a much

Lobo basketball takes part in second annual Copper Invitationalbetter-played second quarter to outscore the Lady Lobos 10-13 in the quarter to take an 18-19 lead into the first half break. The Lady Lobos did not back down coming out in the third quarter to take a three point 28-25 lead at the end of the third period of play. The official’s whistle came into effect for the Lady Lobos in the fourth quarter when two Lobo starters were sent to the bench with five fouls and two others playing with four fouls. The Titans could not take advantage of their 20 trips to the foul line hitting for only four points while the Lobos missed their only two attempts. But the Titans did take advantage of the missing Lobo starters to overtake the Lobos and win an exciting at the end 34-35 basketball game. The Lobo boys’ varsity team played the second game of the tournament taking on the Eagles of Imagine Prep Schools. The Lobo team came out of the locker room very intense, playing hard on both ends of the court to take a 14-4 lead after a quarter of play and continued their hard play, playing very well on both sides to

up their lead to 33-18 at the end of the first half of play. The Lobos continued their intense play in the third quarter outscoring the Eagles 17-11 to take a big 50-29 lead going into the fourth quarter. With another game scheduled for later in the day, the Lobo starters went to the bench turning the game over to the reserves in the fourth quarter. The Eagles took advantage cutting the Lobo lead by 10 points but it was not enough as the Lobos withstood the Eagle run to win the game 54-43. Julian Gomez led Lobo scoring with 14 points followed by 12 points from Matthew Manriquez. Michael Rabago pumped in nine points, Roman Padilla had seven points and Adrian Ochoa had six points to go with his many blocked shots. Robert Sandoval, Rodney Ortiz and Gabriel Ramos each ad two points. The second game for the Lady Lobos had them taking on the running Lady Wildcats of Cibecue High School. The Lady Wildcats came out running and gunning in the first quarter out hustling the Lady Lobos to take a 5-13 lead

at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Lobos decided they were not going to go down that easy and played the Lady Wildcats even the rest of the game finally losing 37-48. A hustling Devin Estrada and Yvonnah Gonzales on the defensive side and Melissa Islava taking it up a notch on the offensive side tried as hard as they could to keep the Lobos in the game but the Lady Wildcats just had a little more bounce to their step. Melissa Islava had a great game scoring 20 points. Devin Estrada finished with six points, Yvonnah Gonzales had five points with Melinda Marinez hitting for four points and Clarissa Chavez getting two points. The Lobos varsity boys’ team closed out the action in the first day of Copper Invitational basketball lay taking on the Wildcats of Cibecue. With visions of holiday festivities on their minds, the Lobo team never got into the basketball game, quickly falling behind 3-14 after a quarter of play. Things did not get better in the second quarter for the

Lobos, getting outscored 7-18 in the period to go into the first half break trailing 10 -32. With the visions of holiday festivities still their main topic, the Lobos played a little better in the second half but they could not make up the difference, losing the game by a lopsided score of 30-56. Michael Rabago led Lobo scoring with 13 points with Matthew Manriquez pumping in seven points. Adrian Ochoa had five points, Roman Padilla had three points and Robert Sandoval scored two points. The tournament took a break from play on Sunday and the Lady Lobos again were scheduled to play the first game of the second day of the tournament on Monday this time taking on the Lady Panthers of Superior High School. The game was a low scoring affair. The Lady Lobo defense came up big in the first quarter holding the Lady Panthers scoreless but the Lobos could only hit for five points to take a 5-0 lead after one quarter. The teams played even in the second quarter with both teams hitting

for eight points as the Lobos protected their five point lead going into the first half break 13-8. The Lobo defense came up big again in the third quarter holding the Panther offense to only two points but the Lobo offense also was in check as they could only come up with five third quarter points to take an 18-10 lead into the final stanza. With the coach giving her reserves some playing time, the Panthers made a small run at the Lobo lead but the Lobos turned them back winning the game 26-21. Melissa Islava again led Lady Lobo scoring with 11 points followed by six points from Yvonah Gonzales, five points from Demitria Boltarez and four points from Devin Estrada. The Lobos’ varsity was on the court next taking on another running and gunning team this time the Apaches of Ft. Thomas High School. The first quarter was back and forth with the Apaches taking a two point 10-12 lead at the end of the first period. The Apaches took advantage of many missed shots followed by no rebounding from the Lobos to pull away to a big 19-32 lead at the end of the second quarter. The Lobos finally decided to play basketball in the second half playing the Apaches even in the third quarter and the Lobos made a big comeback in the fourth quarter coming within two points of the Apaches before falling 51-55 in a hard played basketball game by the Lobos. Julian Gomez led Lobo scoring with 18 points. The defensively hard playing Adrian Ochoa finished with 11 points as did a hustling Matthew Manriquez also with 11 points. Roman Padilla also had a great defensive game finishing with five points. Michael Rabago and Marcos Gonzales added two points apiece. The final two games of the tournament had the Lobos taking on their rivals, the Bearcats. The Lady Lobos were on the court first and it was obvious that the Lady Lobos were a step slow. The Lady Lobos played hard in the first half but still trailed the Lady Bearcats 14-17 at the end of the first half of play. The Lady Lobos came out playing huge in the third quarter outscoring the Bearcats 16-6 in the quarter to take a 30-23 lead into the final stanza. The Lady Lobos could not come out of the gates in the final

quarter, leaving too much on the floor in the third period run and the Bearcats took advantage outscoring the Lady Lobos to win the game and claim the tournament’s first place prize with the 37-45 win over the Lobos. Yvonnah Gonzales took scoring honors for the Lobos with nine points. The usually high scoring Melissa Islava could only hit for eight points with the equally high scoring Demitria Boltarez only hitting for four points. Melinda Marinez pumped in seven points, Devin Estrada had five points and Bianca Lopez and Clarisa Chavez each had two points. Melissa Islava, playing good basketball throughout the tournament, was rewarded for her outstanding play with an all-tournament team award for the Second Annual Copper Invitational Basketball Tournament. The Lobos boys’ varsity team played the last game of the tournament Tuesday night taking on the very tall Ray Bearcat team. The Lobo team did not back down from the Bearcat height advantage playing even with the ranked Bearcats at the end of one half of play 27-27. But the game consists of two halves and the Bearcat scoring efficiency on their three point shots proved too much for the Lobos dropping the basketball game with a score of 52-64 to give the Bearcats the first place trophy of the Second Annual Copper Invitational Basketball Tournament. The Lobos played hard but could not get the basketball in the bucket when they needed too.

Painting and drawing classes are again being offered in Kearny by Gila Pueblo College during the spring semester with instructor Pat Lewis. The painting group known as “ArtUs” will begin classes at 9 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 12 at Ray Hall, adjacent to the Church of Good Shepherd. Anyone in the Copper Basin area interested in the arts is encouraged to join the class. All mediums are welcome and no experience is required, all levels are invited. an orientation session or registering for classes. The signed and dated form is submitted to the Records Offi ce for processing. Incoming students may call any Central Arizona College campus or center and ask to speak with an admissions representative for help. Forms may be submitted in person, faxed (520-494-5083) or completed online at www.centralaz.edu. Admission forms also may be mailed to the District Offi ce at the following address:Central Arizona CollegeAdmissions and Records Offi ce8470 North Overfi eld RoadCoolidge, AZ 85128Step 2 - Attend an Orientation Session “Orientation sessions introduce new students to each other and to Central Arizona College staff and resources,” Helmich said. “Each campus conducts orientation to meet the needs of its students.” Orientation topics include academic programs, payment options, fi nancial aid, library services, residence life, tutoring services, athletics and student activities. Becoming

familiar with these resources really can help new students acclimate to college life. “All new students are invited to attend an orientation session,” she added. “Orientation is held prior to a student’s enrollment and is unique on each campus. We encourage students to contact their campus of choice for more information.”Step 3 - See an Academic Advisor New students are required to meet with an academic advisor to discuss academic goals and review academic history and test scores. The advisor will help the student select courses based on skill level and provide a degree Master Academic Plan (MAP). “Continuing students in a degree or certifi cate program should review their program of study with an academic advisor each semester,” Helmich explained. “This helps ensure that the schedule a student is planning is appropriate for that specifi c degree program. It really helps keep the students on track.” Students returning to college after a break in enrollment should meet with an academic advisor to review their academic history and discuss the next steps toward completing their program. Students transferring from another college must meet with an advisor to determine if

course placement is required. Offi cial transcripts must be sent to the Records Offi ce, but students may bring an unoffi cial transcript when meeting with an advisor the fi rst time to help facilitate admission and scheduling. Central Arizona College not only makes its academic advisors available to students at its campuses and centers, but advising is also performed online via e-mail ([email protected]) or by phone (520-494-5410).Step 4 - Register for Classes Registration for the spring semester is ongoing through Jan. 7. The semester will begin on Monday, Jan. 9; however, Weekend College begins on Friday, Jan. 6. Students who are following a degree or certifi cate program may register for classes by bringing a completed and signed registration form to the Records Offi ce at a local campus or by registering online at www.centralaz.edu. “We encourage students, especially new students, to ask for help if they need it,” Helmich said. “Those fi rst steps into college can be daunting.” Although there is no phone registration at Central Arizona College, students may call the CAC Customer Service Desk for help at 520-494-5111 or toll free at 800-237-9814, ext. 5111 from 8 a.m.-9 p.m.
