Radio Days Revisited
The time is 1938, the setting New York City…
Imagine the pleasure of sitting in a radio theatre auditorium watching an
exciting drama being transmitted live to air: actors, impeccably garbed in
evening dress, delivering their lines into standing microphones; sound
effects people utilising ingenious resources to produce a soundscape
appropriate to the imagined action; and of course, the interspersion of live
commercials singing the praises of the sponsors’ products. Then there
was the fabulous big band dressing up the occasion with its exciting
renditions of popular tunes. Pure magic.
On Halloween, this is how the studio audience at CBS experienced Orson
Welles’ brand new adaptation of “War of the Worlds”, a play documenting
the devastation and panic following an invasion of New York by hostile
Martians. Our hugely entertaining middle school production will enable
you to relive every nostalgic moment of it.
But what of those among the listening audience who happened to
tune into the broadcast too late?
This was the night that panicked America, tens of thousands of New
Yorkers fleeing into the streets in the belief that what they were hearing
was actually occurring! Coverage of the event in the New York Times the
following day ran to several pages.
