2016-17 Schedule and Results

CARDINAL OF THE WEEKMoriah Monaco has been named Mid-American West Division Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday. Monaco helped the Cardinals improve to 7-2 in conference action last week for its best MAC start since the 2008-09 season. The junior from Dover, Ohio, started the week off with a career-high 35 points while tying her personal-best in 3-pointers made (8), helping the Cardinals earn an 89-75 road win at Buffalo last Wednesday night in Alumni Arena. On Saturday, Monaco led the Cardinals again in scoring with a 23-point performance against Northern Illinois. She has now scored in double figures in all but one of Ball State’s 21 games this season. For the week, Monaco averaged 29.0 points and made 11 from behind the arc while shooting 50.0 percent from the field (20-of-40). She also added 7.0 re-bounds per contest.

Sallee Knows How To Win: Head Coach Brady Sallee is the only head coach in program history to have four consecutive winning seasons — 17-16 (2012-13), 18-17 (2013-14), 17-14 (2014-15) and 21-8 (2015-16).

43 Seasons Of Women’s Basketball At Ball State: This is the 43rd season in Ball State women’s basketball history. The Car-dinals are 516-625 (.451) and 267-320 (.451) in the Mid-American Conference.

The Cardinals Remain Efficient From The Floor: Last season Ball State was more efficient from the floor than its opponents in 22 of the Cardinals 32 games. The Cardinals field goal percentage for 32 games was .419 while Ball State’s opponents were held to .368. The Cardinals are continuing the trend this season after shooting .447 percent for 21 games while holding their opponents to .367 from the floor.

Still Outscoring Opponents In Worthen Arena: The Ball State women’s basketball team out-scored its opponents by 177 points at John E. Worthen Arena last season, which is an average of 10.4 points per game. The Cardinals shot .443% from the field at home, while limiting opponents to .372%. The Cardinals are continuing that trend at home in 2016-17 and is out-rebounding their opponents, 43.1 to 37.0 while out-scoring their opponents by 185 points (16.8 per game).

Starting The Season On the Right Foot: After winning their sea-son opener on Friday, Nov. 11 the Cardinals finally broke a 10-year losing streak. Rebound That Basketball: Senior center Renee Bennett’s back-to-back double doubles to start the year is the first time a Cardinal has accomplished the feat since former Cardinal Emily Maggert in 2009, that year Maggert started with three double-doubles. Ben-nett currently has registered six double-doubles this season and eight for her career.

She Shoots She Scores: Junior forward Moriah Monaco opened the season with a 24-point performance against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11/11) which marks the most points scored by a Cardinal in a decade. Lisa Rusche chipped in a game-high 23 points against Kentucky in Worthen Arena in 2006.

Sallee Knows How To Open The MAC: With the win over Toledo on Dec. 31, fifth-year head coach Brady Sallee improved to 4-1 in league openers with wins over Miami, Bowling Green and twice to Toledo. Sallee has lost once and that was in 2013-14 on the road at Akron.

BALL STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALLOff To A Good MAC Start: For the first time since 2008-09 the Cardi-nals have started Mid-American Conference action with a 7-2 record. If the Cardinals defeat Akron Wednesday and improve to 8-2 then it will mark the best conference start since the 2008-09 season.

Next Game vs. Miami:Saturday’s game against Miami will mark the 65th time in program history the two schools have met with the Cardinals leading the all-time series 44-20. The last time Ball State beat Miami in Oxford Jan. 28, 2015 in Millett Hall by a score of 72-55. The Cardinals defeated the RedHawks last season in Worthen Arena, 66-41. Under the direc-tion of Brady Sallee the Cardinals are 5-0 against the RedHawks from 2013-Present.

Ball State Basketball Signs Three NLI’s: Oshlynn Brown (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chilicothe), Maliah Howard-Bass (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) and Sara Price (Warren, Ohio/How-land) have each signed a NLI to play basketball at Ball State, starting in the 2017-18 season.

“I am so excited about these three young ladies and their futures at Ball State,” said Sallee. “They all fill very specific needs for us imme-diately and I feel will make an impact from day one. Most importantly, they are great people, from great families. They will wear our jersey with the pride that it demands!”

Oshlynn Brown a 6-1 center from Chillicothe, Ohio enters her senior season with 700 career points and 832 rebounds. She is projected to be the first player in program history to reach 1,000 points and re-bounds her last season as a Cavalier. Brown received All-Ohio second team honors as a junior. She is a two-time all league first team selec-tion and two-time first team all district honoree.

“We are excited to add such a high level athlete to our program,” said Sallee. “Osh was made to play at Ball State. She competes on every single possession, rebounds furiously and is a nightmare for oppo-nents in the open floor. She has the versatility as a forward that you need to compete at the highest of levels.”

Maliah Howard-Bass a 5-9 guard from Columbus North, had a break-out junior season, averaging 18.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. As a junior, Howard-Bass was chosen IBCA/Subway Underclass Supreme 15, Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association All-State honors, first-team all-state, first-team all-conference and Associat-ed Press All-State honorable mention. Entering the 2016-17 season Howard-Bass ranked fourth in 3-pointers (86), 11th in points (918), and 11th in steals (176). As a junior, Howard-Bass was an Indiana Core All-Star.

“Maliah is simply one of the best players in the state,” said Sallee. She plays for a special high school program at Columbus North and com-petes at the highest of levels in the summer with the Indy Gym Rats. She is a do-it-all guard. She can shoot it, drive it and pass it…simply a playmaker that we are pumped to have in our program.”

The second player from the state of Ohio that will join the Cardinals next season is Sara Price from Howland High School. Price is a 6-1 guard/forward who plays both basketball and softball for the Tigers. Last season Price averaged 21.7 points and 9.8 rebounds while shoot-ing 44.6 percent from the floor. She currently ranks fifth in school his-tory for points (1,178) and needs 334 points to be the all-time leading scorer at Howland. Price earned All-Ohio honors, First Team all league and all county along with most valuable player as a junior.

“Sarah’s ability to score is special,” said Sallee. “She can stretch defenses with her 3-point prowess and you add that along with her length and athleticism, she will fit perfectly into our system. Her versa-tility will allow her to play multiple positions for us. We are very excited to have Sarah in a Ball State uniform for the next four years.

Basketball Runs In The Family: Junior Moriah Monaco grew up around the game of basketball, she is the niece of current West Virginia men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins who is in his eighth season with the Mountaineers. Huggins is a native of Gnadenhutten, Ohio and was also the head coach for current Mid-American Conference member Akron for five seasons. Monaco is a native of Dover Hills, Ohio and attended Dover Hills High School.

Picked Second Again: The Ball State women’s basketball team has been picked second for the fourth straight season in the Mid-American Conference Preseason Poll.

Home Sweet Home: John E. Worthen Arena has been very good to the Cardinals for the past decade. Ball State has a record of 116-60 (.656) at Worthen Arena from 2004-present. From 2009-present, the Cardinals own a 47-25 MAC record when playing at home during conference action. Brady Sallee is 28-12 at home during league play. This season the Cardinals are currently 8-3 in John E. Worthen Arena.

Against The State of Michigan: Ball State is 23-8 against Michi-gan schools during head coach Brady Sallee’s first four seasons after beating Detroit Mercy (twice), Western Michigan (eight times), Eastern Michigan (seven times), Central Michigan (four times) and Oakland University (twice).

Brady Ball: Head Coach Brady Sallee plays one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the Mid-American Conference year in and year out. Sallee’s first season the Cardinals played Illinois State which had played in the post season Women’s National Invitation Tournament. In 2013-14, Sallee faced six teams in non-conference action that were postseason participants in 2012-13. Louisville and Purdue both went to the NCAA Tournament that season, while Auburn, Western Kentucky and Wyoming played in the Women’s National Invi-tation Tournament and Detroit in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The 2014-15 non-conference schedule featured six more teams that had also reached postseason play in 2013-14, Louisville, Purdue and Western Kentucky participated in the NCAA Tournament, while Char-lotte and Duquesne played in the Women’s National Invitation Tour-nament and Evansville in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. Last season Ball State took on Western Kentucky who was an NCAA par-ticipant in 2014-15. BALL STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

A new era in Ball State women’s basketball began May 10, 2012, when Brady Sallee was named the 11th head coach in program history.

Sallee who enters his fifth season at Ball State in 2016-17, has made program history by guiding the Cardinals to four straight postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament appearance. He directed the Cardinals to a 22-10 ledger in 2015-16 which marks only the fifth time in program history Ball State has had a 20+ win season. Sallee is also the only head coach in program history to have four consecutive winning seasons --- 17-16 (2012-13), 18-17 (2013-14), 17-12 (2014-15) and 22-9 (2015-16).

Sallee owns a 224-173 career head coach record, including a 136-109 mark in eight seasons at Eastern Illinois.

The 2015-16 season saw Ball State clinch its third automatic bye in four years into the Mid-American Conference Tournament, as the Cardinals entered as the third seed.

After earning a berth in the postseason WNIT, the Cardinals ad-vanced to the second round of the tournament for the first time since the 2012-13 season byr pulling off a 77-72 upset at Big Ten foe Iowa.

For the third straight season, senior forward Nathalie Fontaine was named First Team All-MAC, while junior guard Jill Morrison was selected Third Team All-MAC for the second time in her ca-reer. Freshman guard Carmen Grande also earned a spot on the MAC All-Freshman Team. This marks the fifth time Ball State has placed at least three players on All-MAC squads in the same sea-son, with the four other being 2014-15, 2008-09, 2007-08 and 1982-83. Fontaine was also named MAC Player of the Year and earned honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press. She ended her career as the program’s all-time leading scorer (2,166 pts).

The 2014-15 season saw Sallee help the Cardinals clinch the MAC West Division title outright for the first time since the 2008-09. Ball State earned a bye as the second seed in the 2015 MAC Tournament and advanced straight to the semifinals, where it lost to No. 6 seed Eastern Michigan 75-65. The Cardinals made their third consecutive appearance in the WNIT, traveling to Middle Tennessee.

In 2013-14, Sallee guided the Cardinals to a thrilling run to the 2014 Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game. The Ball State women’s basketball team went on to make its second-straight trip to the 2014 Women’s National Invitational Tournament and fifth overall in program history.

The Cardinals became postseason eligible by winning seven of its final eight games en route to advancing to the MAC Tournament

championship game for the first time since winning it all in 2009. In the semifinals of the MAC Tournament, Ball State scored a thrilling 73-55 win over 25th-ranked and top-seeded Bowling Green. The Cardinals then lost to No. 3 Akron 79-68 in the title game.

Ball State had a seven-game winning streak heading into the MAC Tournament championship game, including tournament wins over No. 12 seed Kent State, No. 9 Northern Illinois, No. 4 Buffalo and No. 1 Bowling Green. Ball State was only the third team to win four games and the first team to play five in a single MAC Tourna-ment. The Cardinals were also just the third No. 5 seed in league history to compete in the MAC Tournament title game.

Sallee led the Cardinals to an 18-17 overall record in 2013-14, with the 18 wins being the most in a season since the 2008-09 squad went 26-9.

In his first year at Ball State, Sallee helped the Cardinals reach the Final 16 of the 2013 Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) with a roster featuring just seven healthy players over the final 11 games, and as few as six at one point in the season. The Cardinals ended the 2012-13 season with a 17-16 overall record. After a few bumps and bruises in the first half of his debut sea-son, Sallee helped Ball State post one of the most dramatic turn-arounds in Mid-American Conference history as the Cardinals earned the No. 2 seed in the MAC Tournament with a 12-4 league mark. Under Sallee’s tutelage, Ball State improved eight games from its 4-12 MAC mark in 2011-12, which ties as the biggest MAC turnaround in the last 20 years. Sallee also became just the second coach in program history to start MAC play 8-1 in his or her first season.

Thanks to its strong effort in the last half of the regular season, which saw the Cardinals knock of eventual MAC Tournament Champion Central Michigan twice, Ball State earned its fourth ap-pearance in the WNIT and first since the 2006-07 season.

Sallee’s Cardinals then pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the tournament with a hard-fought, 53-48 first-round victory at Big Ten foe Minnesota. Ball State continued its tournament run by knocking off Northern Iowa, 51-48, at Worthen Arena to win two WNIT games for the first time in program history.

For their efforts, freshman guard Nathalie Fontaine was named the MAC Freshman of the Year while senior guard Shanee’ Jackson was voted the MAC Sixth Player of the Year. Fontaine also earned recognition on the All-MAC Second Team and MAC All-Freshman team, while junior guard Brandy Woody was selected to the All-MAC Third Team.

- The Ball State women’s basketball team is having their best start in a decade after the Cardinals defeated Evansville, 84-49, last Wednes-day night in Worthen Arena. The last time Ball State began their sea-son with a 2-0 start was in 2006-07 under the direction of former head coach Tracy Roller, that year Ball State ended its season 24-7.

- Five Ball State players reached double figures against the Purple Aces, with senior guard Jill Morrison leading the way with 19 points. Senior center Renee Bennett was the second leading scorer behind Morrison with 16 points and 10 rebounds. This is the second-straight game Bennett has recorded a double-double and the third of her ca-reer. Junior forward Moriah Monaco and newcomer Destiny Wash-ington finished the contest with 14 points apiece, while senior guard Calyn Hosea ended the game with 11 points.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Ball State women’s basketball team earned its second-straight win at in-state rival Butler Sunday afternoon in Hin-kle Fieldhouse after defeating the Bulldogs, 74-50.

The Cardinals have not defeated Butler in Hinkle Fieldhouse since the 2006-07 season. Ball State improves to 5-2 overall while the Bulldogs fell to 2-6.

Sophomore guard Destiny Washington led the Cardinals offensively with a 17-point performance, just one shy of her career best. Sopho-more guard Carmen Grande and senior center Renee Bennett chipped in 16-points apiece while junior forward Moriah Monaco ended the day with 10. Monaco has now scored in double figures in all seven of Ball State’s games this season. The Cardinals bench scored 21 points in today’s win.

MUNCIE, Ind. - Thursday was just one of those nights for the Ball State women’s basketball team.

The Cardinals played well enough defensively, limiting Purdue to 37 percent shooting. They held a slight advantage on the glass and in the turnover column.

But they simply could not get a shot to fall. Ball State struggled to a season-low 23 percent from the floor in a 58-42 loss to the Big Ten’s Boilermakers at Worthen Arena.

Senior center Renee Bennett led all players with 16 points for Ball State (5-3), while Jill Morrison finished with nine. Moriah Monaco add-ed eight points and nine rebounds, and Destiny Washington grabbed a game-high 12 boards.

MUNCIE, Ind. - Senior center Renee Bennett collected her third dou-ble-double of the season after tying her career high in points (28) while pulling down 11 rebounds in the Cardinals’ 78-74 loss to Lipscomb Sunday afternoon in Worthen Arena. It was an uncharacteristic day for the Ball State women’s basketball team. Typically the Cardinals win the rebound battle over their oppo-nents, especially at home, but today was a different case as Lipscomb outrebounded Ball State, 41 to 28. Both teams ended the game shoot-ing well from the floor – Lipscomb (47.5 percent) and Ball State (46.8). The Cardinals limited their turnovers to only nine and dished out 23 assists while the Lady Bisons committed 18 miscues. Ball State won the points in the paint battle for the ninth time this season, 46 to 20. Ball State had three players finish in double figures with Bennett lead-ing all players with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Des-tiny Washington chipped in 13 points while sophomore point guard Carmen Grande ended the day with 10 points and 12 assists, one shy of her career high.

MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State women’s basketball (10-5, 3-0 MAC) re-mainded undefeated in Mid-American Conference play with its 61-56 win over Western Michigan (11-3, 2-1 MAC) Saturday afternoon in Worthen Arena.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Ball State women’s basketball team is now off to its best start in Mid-American Conference action since the 2008-09 season after its 75-53 road win at Bowling Green Saturday afternoon in the Stroh Center. The Cardinals are now 13-6 overall and 6-1 in league play while Bowling Green drops 5-14 on the year and 1-6 in the MAC.

Senior center Renee Bennett scored her 1,000th point off of a jumper with 36 seconds left on the game clock. Bennett led all scorers with 22-points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Bennett now becomes the 26th player in program history to reach the 1,00th point club. This is the first time since the 2014-15 season that the Cardinals have had two players reach 1,000 career points in the same season. Senior guard Jill Morri-son scored her 1,000th point against Urbana (12/28/16). In 2014-15, Nathalie Fontaine and Shelbie Justice both accomplished that feat.

The women’s basketball battle Saturday for first place in the Mid-Amer-ican Conference between Ball State and Northern Illinois provided just what you might expect from the league’s best shooting teams.

It was a high scoring, back-and-forth affair that came down to the fourth quarter. But Northern Illinois just made too many shots down the stretch, as it handed Ball State its first home loss in conference play, 101-96 at Worthen Arena.

The Cardinals (14-7, 7-2 MAC) placed six scorers in double figures, led by Moriah Monaco with 23 points, and actually made more shots from the floor than NIU.

Renee Bennet added 16 points, while Carmen Grande (12), Jill Morri-son (12), Calyn Hosea (11) and Destiny Washington (10) also reached double figures. Grande directed the Ball State offense with 10 assists for a double-double.

But the Huskies (15-5, 8-1 MAC) shot the ball at a 56 percent clip and outscored the Cardinals by nine points from the 3-point line and four from the charity stripe to overcome a 20-10 disadvantage on the offensive glass.
