…Let us pray to the Lord.…Lord, have mercy1 To save us and make us His children and heirs, our Father in heaven has given His most precious treasure, His Son, to be born of the Blessed Virgin. Let us cast aside all fear, then, and come boldly to our loving Father’s throne, praying in the Spirit for all mankind, for the holy Church and for our needs of body and soul. 2 For the Church, that all who have been baptized

into Christ may enfold in their hearts the Christ Child and so be ready to depart whenever they are called...3 For our nation, that our leaders may serve faithfully and wisely, making God-pleasing decisions and walking in integrity...4 For our parish, that we may boldly shine the Light of Christ into the dark lives of those we know who do not know or love Him...

1. Let all together praise our GodBefore His glorious throne;Today He opens heav’n againTo give us His own Son,To give us His own Son. 2. He leaves His heav’nly Father’s throne,Is born an infant small,And in a manger, poor and lone,Lies in a humble stall,Lies in a humble stall. 3. Within an earth-born form He hidesHis all-creating light; To serve us all He humbly cloaksThe splendor of His might,The splendor of His might. 4. He undertakes a great exchange,Puts on our human frame,And in return gives us His realm,His glory, and His name,

His glory, and His name. 5. He is a servant, I a lord:How great a mystery! How strong the tender Christ child’s love!No truer friend than He,No truer friend than He. 6. He is the key and He the doorTo blessèd paradise; The angel bars the way no more.To God our praises rise,To God our praises rise. 7. Your grace in lowliness revealed,Lord Jesus, we adoreAnd praise to God the Father yieldAnd Spirit evermore; We praise You evermore.

Isaiah 11:1-5The Righteous Reign of the Branch11 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,    the Spirit of counsel and might,  the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of theLORD.3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see,    or decide disputes by what his ears hear,4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,    and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,    and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

2 Samuel 7:1-16.The LORD'S Covenant with David7 Now when the king lived in his house and the LORDhad given him rest from all his surrounding enemies,2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwellin a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.”3 And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.”4 But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, 5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says theLORD: Would you build me a house to dwell in? 6 I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. 7 In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges[a] of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ 8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince[b

] over my people Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your

enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.[c] Your throne shall be established forever.’”

John 1:19-28The Testimony of John the Baptist19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the

voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight[a] the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him,“Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Luke 2:22-40Jesus Presented at the Temple22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant[a

] departin peace,    according to your word;30 for my eyes have seen your salvation31     that you have prepared in the presence of all

peoples,32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,    and for glory to your people Israel.”33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.[b] She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who werewaiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. The Return to Nazareth39 And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.

Share Time: FIRST SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS Isaiah 11:1–5Galatians 4:1–7Luke 2:(22–32) 33–40 The Seed of David Comes to His Temple A Rod has come forth from the stem of Jesse (Is. 11:1–5)—the Seed of David whose kingdom shall be established forever (2 Sam. 7:1–16). In the fullness of time, God sent forth His Son Jesus to redeem us from the judgment of the Law (Gal. 4:1–7). Now He is presented in the temple in fulfillment of the Law and revealed to be “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel” (Luke 2:22–40). Christ has enlightened us in baptism, giving us to be adopted as sons of God and heirs of eternal life. Receiving the Holy Sacrament of His body and blood, we are prepared to depart this world in peace, for our eyes have seen the salvation of God in Him.

Sing it!

366 1 It came upon the midnight clear,

That glorious song of old,From angels bending near the earthTo touch their harps of gold:"Peace on the earth, goodwill to all,From heav'n's all-gracious king."The world in solemn stillness layTo hear the angels sing.

2 Still through the cloven skies they comeWith peaceful wings unfurled,And still their heav'nly music floatsO'er all the weary world.Above its sad and lowly plainsThey bend on hov'ring wing,And ever o'er its babel soundsThe blessed angels sing.

3 All you, beneath your heavy load,By care and guilt bent low,Who toil along a dreary wayWith painful steps and slow:Look up, for golden is the hour,Come swiftly on the wing,The Prince was born to bring you peace;Of Him the angels sing.

4 For lo, the days have come to passBy prophets seen of old,When down into the circling yearsCame Christ as was foretold. His word of peace shall to the earthGod's ancient promise bring,And all who take this gift will hearThe song the angels sing.

Ephesians 3:1-12 The Mystery of the Gospel Revealed 3 For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner for Christ

Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— 2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you, 3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. 4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. 6 This mystery is[a] that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift ofGod's grace, which was given me by the working of his power.8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in[b] God who created all things,10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.

Matthew 2:1-12 The Visit of the Wise Men 2 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of

Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[b] and have come toworship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;for from you shall come a ruler    who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way.

And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Psalm 24 The King of Glory A Psalm of David. 24 The earth is the LORD's and the fullness

thereof,[a]

the world and those who dwell therein,2 for he has founded it upon the seas    and established it upon the rivers.

3 Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD?    And who shall stand in his holy place?4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,    who does not lift up his soul to what is false    and does not swear deceitfully.5 He will receive blessing from the LORD    and righteousness from the God of his salvation.6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,    who seek the face of the God of Jacob.[b
