    Urban SOS is AECOMs annualstudent competition. It wascreated to engage studentsin urban planning and design,architecture, landscapearchitecture, environmentalrestoration, and engineeringwith the issues conrontingmodern cities and to allowthem to propose solutionsthat, i worthy, will be seen by

    established proessionals intheir eld.

    Why?

    With more than hal o thegrowing world populationliving in cities, how we addressurban and natural landscapeswill determine much aboutthe uture o our planet. As aglobal design and engineeringconsultancy, AECOM recognizesthat cities require broad-based,interdisciplinary thinking and, iproperly managed, can become

    machines or environmental andsocial progress. Our aspirationor the competition is to ostera cross-disciplinary approachto the complex challengesacing todays built and naturalenvironments.

    The 2012 competitionculminates with an event at theend o November in Shanghai.This year, we are addressingthe issue o Frontiers as thedriving theme o the Urban SOScompetition. Our globalizingworld is currently undergoingmass migrations, geo-politicalshits and new patterns ocommerce, enhancing the role ocities as the stage sets or thesemassive changes. In additionto a cash prize or the winningteam, we will arrange a donation

    AECOM is seeking submissionsor our ourth annual Urban SOScompetition. The theme o thisyears competition is Frontiers.We are seeking integrateddesign, planning, environmentalrestoration and engineeringproposals in urban contextsworldwide, which relate toborder, gateway and edge/ringeconditions. Proposals should be

    on urban sites currently acingchronic liveability challengesthat are largely the result oa citys location on a natural,political, cultural or economicborder. Proposals should beimplementable in the short-term, as we will engage a localorganization to help advancethe proposed project. Submittedproposals must all under one ormore o the ollowing criteria:

    On a political border:Challenged sites within citiesthat lie on an international,territorial or jurisdictionalboundary where the borderconditions are (at least in part)responsible or the sites existingconditions.

    Ports and trade:

    Urban sites that are impactedor largely dened by trade andcommerce that crosses nationalborders or communities.

    Migration and population shits:Urban communities and sitesthat are impacted by the massmovement o people, either asmigrants across a jurisdictionalborder, or rom a rural context to

    an urban one.

    What?

    Transnational destinations:A site that acts as a gatewayor rst point-o-entry orinternational travellers and/ormigrants, or the fow o goodsand ideas rom elsewhere in theworld.

    Shiting geo-politicalconditions:An urban community or site

    that is subject to a changing oran evolving political landscape.This transormation shouldbe impacting either a placesrelationship to its neighborsor its wider national home, itsexisting cultural aliations, orrecent or anticipated changes inthe citys political status.

    Responses can range rom astrategic ramework to a surgicalmicro-response, rom a wholelandscape system to a singlepiece o architecture. Entrantsshould demonstrate a holisticand sustainable approach totheir proposals. They shouldpresent a connective languagethat can embrace many or allaspects o the site, expressing alanguage o built orm that tiestogether land, buildings, ecology,

    inrastructure and economicand social activity. Judges willvalue creativity and innovation,but your response must beundamentally easible.

    Responses will be judged basedon these criteria:

    Response directly addressesthe challenges posed bygateway or border conditionsin an urban context

    Clear strategy or howproposal will aect largercitys transormative state

    Clear sense o howproposed design will aecttransormation o site

    Holistic approach to designthat ully embraces site

    Appreciation orinterdisciplinary thinkingbeyond traditional practice

    Creativity and innovation

    Feasibility and viability

    Ability to communicate ideasin a clear, interesting andcompelling manner

    The most successul responseswill be those that are wellpresented, combining the

    points o view o more thanone discipline architecture,landscape architecture,engineering, economics,planning, ecological restoration,climate science and arerealistically implementablein the context o city-specicphysical, political, social,economic and cultural realities.

    Engagement with a communityorganization winning team

    In making their submissionsto the Urban SOS: Frontierscompetition, teams areencouraged to considerpartner groups that couldbenet rom their proposal.These partner groups shouldbe a humanitarian, charitable

    or community organizationor agency, a related researchinstitution, or a local actiongroup that would be in aposition to urther developor implement the design. Thewinning design will receive anAECOM donation o US$25,000in cash and in-kind sta time tourther develop and implementthe project. Likely partnershipscenarios could be, but are notnecessarily limited to:

    A humanitarian charity thatcould match the donationto making the proposal areality;

    A local communityorganization prepared tojump start the project;

    A relie agency (public,intergovernmental or NGO)that could use the project todeliver services to people,places or communities inneed;

    A non-prot entity (e.g., aschool, hospital or otherpublic amenity) that woulddirectly benet rom the

    projects implementation.

    Furthermore, an additionalUS$15,000 cash prize will beawarded to the winning team.

    The competition is open toundergraduate and graduatestudents at all levels o highereducation in all countries o theworld. Entrants must be enrolledin a certied program during the2012 all term.

    Levels: Bachelors, Masters,Ph.D. students.

    Fields o Study: Urbanand Regional Planning,Urban Design, Architecture,Landscape Architecture,Environmental Planning,Natural Resource Sciences,Engineering, and relateddisciplines.

    Who?

    Submissions may be romindividuals or teams o upto our members. Teams willbenet rom having members omultiple disciplines.

    This year, we are encouragingentries rom studentsconcentrating in departmentssuch as anthropology, sociology,cultural studies, international

    Submission Requirements

    All applicants must pre-registertheir interest at aecom.com/urbansos by leaving a contacte-mail address. They may do soat any time until the competitiondeadline o August 31, 2012, butmust do so beore submittingtheir nal entry. Once you havepre-registered, you will be the

    rst to hear about any news/updates. It is recommended thatyou register your interest beoreJuly 1, 2012.

    Due by midnight GMT on August31, 2012, entrants must submit:

    A brie description (100-250words) o their proposal.This statement must clearlyidentiy the name o thecity and a challenge orsolution that is related to thecompetition theme.

    The name(s) and contactinormation o the teammembers.

    Site coordinates (via GoogleEarth) o the location, or anaddress that is searchableon Google maps.

    A PDF slide presentationo up to 10 slides. Thesemust include images and/or text. There is no wordlimit but ont size must belegible when printed at A4paper size. All responsesmust be in English, with anymeasurements provided inmetric units.

    How?

    Optional: Student teamsare not required to identiya charitable, humanitarian,community or non-protpartner group, but i theyhave one pre-identied theymay speciy one.

    Entrants are encouraged toocus their submissions onclear, concise communication

    emphasizing main ideas, keypoints and visible designsolutions. Students mayinclude photographs, diagrams,drawings, renderings, collages orother visualizations to expresstheir solution.

    Slide presentations must be inAdobe Acrobat PDF ormat. Eachle must be no larger than 5MB.They must be A4 paper size andlandscape orientation.

    Submissions must be uploadedusing the submission link onthis website by midnight GMTon August 31, 2012. Entrantswill receive a conrmation thatthe les have been uploaded.(Please retain conrmation orreerence.)

    Failure to comply with any othese submission requirementswill result in immediatedisqualication.

    Semi-fnalists SubmissionRequirements

    Three semi-nalist teams willbe selected. They will be notiedby October 1, 2012 and given aperiod o time to develop theirproposals urther. During theweek o November 12, 2012, theywill be invited to present theirsubmissions to the nal judging

    panel in Shanghai. They will behosted by AECOMs Shanghaioce. The nal schemes will bepresented at an exhibit in a to-be-determined cultural venue inShanghai.

    Each o these three teams willbe provided with an honorariumto contribute to travel costs(amount varies dependingon location o entrants). Thesemi-nalists will be invitedto present their submissionsin an appropriate ormat(presentation, video, displayboards, model) to the judgingpanel. Further details onsubmission requirements willbe provided to the three semi-nalist teams.

    JudgingThe nalist teams will be selected by ave-member judging panel chosen byAECOM and comprised o design andengineering leaders rom within andoutside the company.

    The top 20 entrants will receive specialmention on the competition website aswell as an exhibit that will be on display

    during September and October in ato-be-determined venue in Shanghai.

    Competition terms

    Three nalist teams will be invited topresent their work to the judging panelin Shanghai the week o November12, 2012. The winning team will bedetermined by the judging panel at this

    time.

    Students place o education will notimpact judging.

    NotifcationAll entrants will be notied by e-mail byOctober 1, 2012 when the semi-nalistsare announced. The winning team willbe announced at an event in Shanghaithe week o November 12, 2012.Winner and PrizesEach o the three nalist teams willreceive an honorarium to contributeto travel expenses related to visitingShanghai to present the teamssubmission. The nalist honorariaare to contribute to expenses relatedto attendance and presentation inShanghai only and cannot be exchangedor other prizes. In addition, each teamwill receive US$500 to contribute toadditional costs. No other costs orees will be covered by AECOM or thesponsors.

    The winning team (or teams) will receivea cash prize. The total prize money isvalued at US$15,000, which may bedivided amongst one or more winningteams.

    A urther US$25,000 in cash and in-kind sta hours will be donated byAECOM to a charitable or humanitarianorganization or related agency to helpurther develop the winning proposal.

    Decisions made by the judging panelshall be nal.

    Number o EntriesIndividuals may participate on only oneteam. Each team is permitted to enteronly one submission.Publication RestrictionsEntrants may not reer to projectsthat have already been implementedor which have been designed on thebasis o any agreement entered into bythe entrant or entrants with a public,public-private or ully private body withthe intention o actual development

    o the project in question. Similarly,entries may not reer to projectspublished beore the last day o thedeliberations o the judging panel.

    Inringement o Copyright and OtherIntellectual PropertyAll work submitted or the competitionmust be the entrants original work.It is the entrants sole responsibility

    to ensure that the work submitteddoes not inringe upon the intellectualproperty rights o any third party,including, but not limited to copyright,trademark and design right. AECOMshall not be responsible or entrantsinringement o any third partyintellectual property rights, regardlesso whether said inringement wasknown or should have been known bythe entrant.

    Use o Submitted WorksEntrant agrees that AECOM andcompetition sponsors are granted thenon-exclusive reproduction rights toall entries or AECOMs advertising,promotion, exhibition, print publicationand Internet purposes directly relatingto the competition.

    AECOM shall have no responsibility orany unauthorized use o the entrantsworks by any third party, including butnot limited to the sponsors.

    The top 20 submissions will beexhibited online at aecom.com/urbansos and in a month-long exhibit inShanghai in November-December 2012.
