COLD CRANKING AMPS - EN TO SAE - ARE YOU COMPARING CORRECTLY? The specification of lead acid starter batteries is measured using two critical criteria - capacity in Ah and Cold Cranking Amps. Capacity denotes the amount of electricity stored in the battery (important for powering electrical consumers such as lights, air conditioning, wipers and so on). This is generally measured by all producers at the 20 hour rate, so it is quite easy to make product comparisons. Cold Cranking denotes the amount of starting power the battery can deliver under load, ie when starting an engine. This can be measured in several different ways, but the standard value in Europe - accepted by all European OEMs - is EN (European Norm). However in the far East and the US the standard used is denoted as SAE, and these different values are often used in error to compare battery performance. As many batteries are imported from outside of Europe, it is important that the differences in Cold Cranking ratings are understood by UK customers; essentially the test used to obtain SAE values discharges the battery more than the EN test, with the result that SAE values are always higher than EN. However this has no bearing on the real performance of the battery, nor does it mean that a higher SAE rating is better than a lower EN rating. To help customers understand the real comparisons between EN and SAE values we have constructed a simple cross reference sheet based on the current VARTA car and the new commercial vehicle types. Cold Cranking amps - En to saE - arE you Comparing CorrECtly?The specification of lead acid

starter batteries is measured

using two critical criteria -

capacity in Ah and Cold

Cranking Amps.

Capacity denotes the

OEMs - is EN (European
