    PART 23 PILING( Fourth Revision)

o . FOR EW0 R 00.1 This Indian Standard (Part 23) (FourthRevision) was adopted by the Bureau of IndianStandards on 16 November 1988, after thedraft finalized by the Method of Measurementof Works of Civil Engineering (Excluding RiverValley Projects ) Sectional Committee hadbeen approved by the Civil Engineering DivisionCouncil.0.2 Measurement occupies a very importantplace in the planning and execution of any civilengineering work from the time of first estimatesto the final completion and settlement of pay-ments of project. Methods followed for measurement are not uniform and considerable differ-ences exist between practices followed bydifferent construction agencies and also betweenvarious Central and State Government Depart-ments. While it is recognized that each systemof measurement has to be specifically related toadministrative and financial organizationswithin a department responsible for the work, aunification of the various systems at technicallevel has been accepted as very desirablespecially as it permits a wider range of operationfor civil engineering contractors and eliminatesambiguities and misunderstandings arising outof inadequate understanding of the varioussystems followed.0.3 Since different trades are not related to

one another, the Sectional Committee duringits second revision decided that each trade asgiven in IS: 12001964 shall be issued separa-tely as a different part as it would be helpfulto users in using the specific standard. ThISpart covers the method of measurement ofpiling work applicable to buildings as well asto civil engineering works was published sepa-rately in the year 1971 and further revised in1977. In view of the large number of commentsreceived on this part, the Sectional Committeedecided to issue a fourth revision incorporatingthe changes to keep the latest method as bein~followed by most of the organizat.ions. Theprincipal modifications are in respect of rein-forced cement concrete sheet, timber sheet, andbored piles.0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether aparticular requirement.' of this standard iscomplied with" the final value, observed orcalculated, expressing the result of a measure-ment, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS : 2-1960. The number of significant placesretained in the rounded off value should be thesame as that of the specified value in thisstandard.-Method of measurement of building and civilengineering works fi rs t T 'f li J; on J.tRules far rounding off' numerical values (nuiud).

    1. SCOPE1.1 This standard (Part 23) Covers the methodof measurement of piling.2.
