Three types:
c. Arteries
d. Veins
e. Capillaries

a. Arteries
Carry oxygenated blood away from heart Function – transport blood quickly and at high
pressure to the tissue
Structure:– Thick wall to withstand pressure
– Muscular and elastic wall to prevent bursting
– The wall consist of epithelial tissues surrounded by
connective tissue and smooth muscles Branch into smaller vessel called arterioles as they
reach the tissues Arterioles continue to branch and form capillaries.

b. Capillaries
Thin-walled blood vessels
Respiratory gases, nutrients, waste
products, hormones are exchangebetween the blood and cells through
the thin wall of the capillaries
The wall is one-cell thick

c. Vein
Carry deoxygenated blood from
tissues to the heart
The wall consist of epithelial tissuessurrounded by smooth muscle
(thinner than that in arteries) and
connective tissues
Have large lumen and valve that
maintain the one-way flow of blood
