A seminar on business cooperationbetween Myanmar and Vietnam was opened atMyanmar International Convention Centre on10 June with an address by Vice-President of theRepublic of the Union of Myanmar Thiha ThuraU Tin Aung Myint Oo.

Myanmar and Vietnam are members ofASEAN and have long friendly relations sincemany years back. Friendship and understandinghave been enhancing between the two countriesthrough exchange of visits of the leaders.

In his speech at the opening of the seminar,the Vice-President said, “Having good andfriendly relations between the two countries, wewelcome Vietnamese companies to come andinvest in Myanmar. To have more confidence inmaking investment in Myanmar, the Promotionand Reciprocal Protection of InvestmentAgreement between the two Governments wassigned in May 2000 and the Memorandum ofUnderstanding on Investment Promotionbetween the two Governments was signed inApril 2010.”

KABUL, 11 June—A string of attacks across Afghanistan, including one bya suicide bomber pushing an ice cream cart, killed at least 21 people Saturday,as the UN said in a new report that May was the deadliest month for Afghancivilians since 2007.

The worst attack took place in the Khakrez District of Kandahar Provincein southern Afghanistan, where a roadside bomb killed all 16 people travellingin a minibus, including eight children, said provincial police chief AbdulRaziq.

tional satellite rocketed into low-Earthorbit Friday on a mission to track changesin the amount of salt in the upper levels ofthe world’s oceans.

A Delta 2 rocket carrying theArgentine-built satellite blasted off shortlybefore 7:30 am under cloudy skies atVandenberg Air Force on the CentralCalifornia coast.

The rocket and its internationalpayload roared southwestward over thePacific, quickly vanishing into a deepmarine layer that typically shrouds thestate this time of year.

Michael Freilich, who heads NASA’sEarth science division, was relieved andoverjoyed the satellite “is working so wellfrom the beginning.”

NASA’s Aquarius instrument willmeasure the concentration of dissolvedsalt at the sea surface. The amount of brinein the ocean remains fairly constant, butsalt levels in the uppermost layer varyaround the globe.

NASA will produce monthly mapsdetailing sea salt changes during the three-year mission. Scientists hope the data willhelp them better predict future climate

change and short-term climate phenomenasuch as El Nino and La Nina.

For decades, ocean salinity has beencharted the old-fashioned way — by shipsand buoys. The problem with that is thereare gaps in the data since researchers don’thave surveys for many parts of the ocean.

Two new elements added to periodictable

WASHINGTON, 11June—Two new ele-ments are being added tothe periodic table afterthey were discoveredthrough a collaborationbetween US and Russianscientists, a top USchemistry expert saidFriday.

The elements are thefirst to be added sincecopernicium in 2009.They have not yet beennamed, but are known fornow as 114 and 116.

“Over the past 250years, there have beenbasically 100 new ele-ments discovered,” saidPaul Karol, a chemistryprofessor at CarnegieMellon University andchair of the committeethat recommended theadditions.

“But it is becomingmore and more difficultto do this so when a newelement is discovered, it’sactually pretty exciting.”

The pair were foundthrough atom-smasherexperiments called cross-bombardments, accord-ing to research publishedby the InternationalUnion of Pure and Appli-ed Chemistry.

BIRMINGHAM, 11 June— The elderly need to bewatched closely and checked at least twice a dayduring hot, humid weather, US researchers advise.

“Friends or family should visit or check onthem twice per day, and monitor for symptoms ofheat stress. If they show any signs, medicalassistance should be sought,” Dr Richard Allman,director of the Universi ty of Alabama atBirmingham Centre for Aging, says in a statement.“There are age-related changes in body temperaturecontrol that put the elderly at risk when thetemperatures rise.”

BEIJING, 11 June—A new round of lethal floodsand ensuing landslides have left at least 50 dead and40 others missing in some of the major agriculturalprovinces in southern China, turning fears of month-long drought into record-breaking inundation andbringing this summer’s flood casualties to at least94.

At least 23 died and 10 were missing in theworst-hit Xianning, Hubei Province, a spokesmanwith the provincial flood control and drought reliefheadquarters said on Friday.

“Most of the deaths and injuries were caused bycollapsing buildings after floods destroyedembankments, and 60,000 residents in Xianning’ssubmerged Tongcheng county have been relocatedto safe places by late Friday,” an official surnamedZhang from the local flood control and droughtrelief office said.

Zhang also said torrential rains have affectedabout 680,000 residents in the province, toppled6,744 homes and inundated 639 square kilometersof farmlands. The direct economic loss could reach610 million yuan ($94 million), he added.

About 1,500 soldiers and six military boats haveparticipated in the rescue.

He stressed the needto dredge the draught ofwater course for 15000-ton vessels to becomesuitable facility for 30000-ton and 35000-ton vessels.For the first phase, amaster plan is to be drawnfor extension of the portfrom No. 6 Sawmill toHtidan triangular peace ofland.

SAN BERNARDINO, 11 June—Construction can resumeon a massive Southern California solar energy projectafter wildlife officials determined it will not jeopardizethe threatened desert tortoise, federal officials saidFriday.

The US Bureau of Land Management approved thenext phase of construction on the nearly $2 billionIvanpah project located in eastern San BernardinoCounty, about five miles from the Nevada border.

In April, federal officials ordered BrightSourceEnergy Co to halt construction on two-thirds of the

Makiko Iwafuchi, 49, of Chiba, said she left her hotel 25 Mayfor a short stroll near the Goshainkunda lake. She left the main trailand could not find it again.
