12 Continuing Our Journey

Author of the Advent book, Keep Watch With Me, Claire Brown writes: “for many of us,

Advent, the season that precedes Christmas, is marked by holiday parties, shopping and

preparation, and end-of-the-year business. But in the Christian liturgical tradition, this

season is one of self-reflection and preparation. Before the joy of Jesus’ birth at Christ-

mas, we walk through weeks of uncertainty about the world, repentance for our sins,

and grappling with our need for God’s intervention and God’s call to us to address the

injustices of the world. We prepare our hearts for God’s coming through faithful work

and prayer. We keep our hand to the plow while we were search the skies for signs of

God’s presence.”

The season of Advent offers us the opportunity to pause in our busy work and lives, to

take stock of who and where we are, to repent, and to seek out the voice and move-

ment of God’s Spirit in the world, one another, and ourselves. The ancient desert dwell-

ers of the earliest Christian communities believed that the surest way into the heart of

God was to be still. In being still we learn to be attentive to the vast and hidden stillness

that permeates all things. Advent is about becoming attentive to that stillness. The

stillness in our homes. Rise in the thin light of a new day. Do not turn on the lamp or

television, computer or coffee maker, but stand by an east window and let the dawn’s

fingers creep up over the fingers of your own hand.

The stillness as we venture out of doors. Hear it in the splintering of fall leaves or in the

first cape of snow draped over the eaves of your house.

Turn finally to your own heart. The same stillness is there as well. In that stillness beats

the heart of God. There is correspondence between our hearts and God’s. Our hearts

yearn for hope in all its fullness and being one with each other.

This season of the Coming, we wait and we rise up on tiptoe to dance. We open our

throats to sing and to proclaim this Advent vigil we keep. May these Advent days be

warm and rich in those things that bring you peace.

Minutes from the November Council Meeting

Attendees: Adele Buum, Sheila Helms, Linda Langner, Christie Delfanian, Teri Johnson, Dave Huebner, Jim and Ruby Wilson and Dawn Jones

Call to order, 5:25 p.m.

Sheila made a motion to approve minutes, seconded by Adele. Motion carried.

Treasurer’s report –we had payroll expenses so for this month alone income fell behind expenses by $877. Suggestion made to add a running total for the year that reflects the carryover when income outweighs expenses to treasurer’s report. This will give parish-ioners a more accurate view of yearly income vs. expenses. Motion by Adele, second by Sheila to approve treasurer’s report. Motion carried.

Old Business

Banner replacement – Two new banners were ordered with different, short messages on them because a discount was offered

for ordering two, so total cost was less than $200. Plan is to be able to rotate them. Through her PFLAG meeting, Teri

learned that the police would like to be notified when vandalism such as the theft of our flag occurs.

Dave said he can put the flag up but will need help to elevate it higher. He and Jim will take care of that.

UCC credentialing –continuing.

New Business

Second treasurer – request by Jennifer to have another person who knows how to use Quickbooks and has accounting back-

ground as a backup. Motion by Sheila, second by Adele to see a second treasurer. Motion carried.

Office manager – Decision made continue as is and extend council’s gratitude to Jennifer for all that she does.

Nominating committee – Need secretary, church home and moderator for 2020. Dave volunteered to take over church home,

Dawn volunteered to be secretary and Linda agreed to continue as moderator unless someone else expresses a desire to fill

the position. Therefore, no nominating committee is necessary.

Church decorating – Tree needs to be up by Dec. 1. Adele and Linda will go through Christmas deration. Suggestion made to

purchase some new ones. Those who wish to help decorate the tree will meet at 10 a.m. Nov. 30 – Dawn will bring soup

and Subway sandwiches will be ordered for lunch.

Committee Reports

Church home – Sheila made a motion, seconded by Adele, to have Dave Huebner and Jim Wilson figure out the best solution for

the cracked column and the siding that has moisture damage. Motion carried. Moisture in side may be responsible for the

damage to the trim on the northeast corner of the church as well.

Council extends a thank you to Linda Langner, Adele Buum and Helen Andersen for paying for the window cleaning.

Church Outreach – update on Harvest table was included in November newsletter

Church Life – Sunday School teachers are scheduled through December; we now have eight in the confirmation class!

Church Connections – no report.

World Aides Community Service

Each day a person in the world living with HIV is a World’s AIDS Day. December 1 is the annual observance of

World AIDS Day and our church will be hosting a World AIDS service on Tuesday evening, December 3rd at 7:00

pm. The theme of this year’s World’s AIDS Day is “Communities make the difference” and the service will high-

light the important opportunity and essential role communities have played and will continue to play in the

AIDS response at the international, national and local levels. This service is an opportunity for people in our

community to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate

people who have died. This community service is being sponsored by the Brooking’s PFLAG (Parents/Friends of

Lesbian and Gay) chapter.

Globally there are an estimated 34 million people who have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in

1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in

history. Today, scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living

with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. Despite this, the stigma and discrimination

remain a reality for many people living with the condition.

World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public that HIV has not gone away—there is still a vital

need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and increase education. Prevention and treatment of

HIV grow by raising our voices as one. When we come together as a community we have the power to make a

difference. Please join the community on Dec. 3rd at 7:00 pm for this meaningful service.

CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL

December 15th will be the last Sunday for children’s Sunday school for the year. Sunday school will resume in

January!
