Welcome to the very late editon of June/July Traction. June/July was a quiet period for events so I decided to wait until the Phillip Island 6 Hour had been run plus we had a few other events held during this time.

There have been more competition events than social possibly due to the colder weather; not the case for same who you can read about in this issue.

The All Triumph Challenge has been run and the winners announced and were presented their awards at the August general meeting. Congratularions Shirley, Brian and Bruce. A full rundown of the event will be published in the August/September Traction. You should have received an email blast listing the full finishing order.

editor’s rePortComing up a very big competition and social event, the Winton 12 Hour Relay (13th–14th Oct). This is a huge event and needs many helping hands. TSOA has competed in the event for many years and is generally well prepared. This year we have 2 teams entered. If you’re interested in helping for the weekend or just one day get in touch with Alister Ondarchie the event co-ordinator. email: [email protected]

It has been good to see many of you attending

General Meetings and supporting the morning

coffee’s, as this is traditionally the time of the year

when we tend to hibernate and those that can head

north to the warmer climate.

Activity like driving the trusty Triumph to various club functions has increased and it is great to see a row of our cars parked outside a coffee shop on display to spark interest from the general public, who knows a prospective member could just be walking past, the more we use the cars the better it is for the sustainability of TSOA Vic.Thank you to all those members who paid their membership fees smartly, it makes our treasurer’s job much easier and is less stressful for the membership secretary and Club Permit Scheme secretary and safer for all on the CPS.

There has been a lot of competition events over the last couple of months and you can read all about the successes and failures in the reports.Jim Cain and his team have been busy planning interesting runs for all to enjoy as the weather warms up, only one more month and it will be Spring, so finish the maintenance and polish the bodywork and get out and about.

The All Triumph Challenge at Winton Raceway was

a huge success. The results and reports of the event

will no doubt be published in the next TRaction.

Thank you to all involved for making this such a

successful event.

Yours TriumphantlyCheers roger Jeary GT6 [ green frog]

Howard Glinn and the Atr AnnouncementPlease be advised that due to many competing needs I am resigning from running the ATR event effective immediately. Whilst I wont be running this year, I do hope to be a competitor in future years.

The races have been great thanks to the support of so many competitors and supporters. Particularly the team of guys from SA, making the long trip across, and competitors from Vic and Qld.

Three individuals that have been amazing in their personal support to me constantly are Glen Coutinho , Terry Donovan and Chris Swingler. Always there to “have a chat” and offer suggestions and support. Lorraine has always been such a great supporter as well as the finance keeper too.

There have been so many highlights in the time I’ve been honoured to be the event caretaker. So many different people standing on the podium of the reverse grid races. One highlight example was Grant Rawlings in his stag! But he was just one of many. The event was always quite split between the regular “Racers” and people turning up for either their

first full race or their one off yearly race. On a purely personal level, the race when I ran so hard with Trevor Lindsay to win the outright race a few years ago was a standout, but also watching Ryan and Greg Morsillo go so hard toe to toe last year in Vic was a huge buzz.

Terry at MRA/FOSC already has the event on his plan for this year, it definitely will run. It will just depend how many Triumphs actually enter as to if it’s a series of 3 stand alone races or if its incorporated into another category event he has on the day.

Michael Kip and Gordon Bunyan are trying a new and exciting event in Victoria this year, so hopefully its well-attended, and then becomes an ongoing event each year too.

Of course I will help whoever takes over the event, be it just for this year’s race or also for future years.

For all those that turned up to race, you made it all worthwhile. For those of you that came to watch and or help on the day, I trust you enjoyed the racing.

As I’ve always said, I hope that whenever you race, you Always Triumph!!!

Spitfire Seat Belt GuidesNow that I’m an old F..t, it really pisses me off, that every time I fall into my Spitfire, I sit on the bloody seat belt which hasn’t retracted properly. I struggle around to retrieve the damn thing & nearly dislocate my neck. Anyway, lo & behold, Ebay to the rescue yet again. Several Pirates in the USA have designed after-market seat belt guides which fit directly under the Spitfire head rest - also keeps the head rest from slipping back down every time I hit a pot hole - 2 problems solved for the price of one - bargain @ $59 a pair delivered. Just the accessory you need once you’ve wasted your money on all the others. I bought the plastic ones, not the stainless steel variety - I didn’t want my throat cut as I hit the curb - not yet anyway. Might see if my tech-savvy son can make some on his 3D printer & sell them for $55 a pair!!!

Niffty Bonnet Locks” for Spitfires & GT6sHave you ever had your Spitfire bonnet latch unlock while driving down

a bumpy road? I have - on both of my Spitfires; sometimes both sides

& I find it very annoying. After repeatedly stopping & re-fastening, then

countless bonnet adjustment sessions, I finally gave up - concluding that

the latches were too worn &/or the whole body / bonnet alignment from

the Triumph factory was poor (crap) from the outset. I have a set of the

original factory accessory bonnet key locks, but could never bring myself

to drill the holes required for fitment.

Then one day while trawling Ebay, the Solution appeared - “Niffty Bonnet Locking Pins” - problem solved & no hole drilling required, all for less than $20 per car. This design is basically a ‘U shaped” stainless steel bracket with a pin. The bracket bolts under the bonnet latch mount, the latch is closed & a small pin is inserted preventing the latch from unintentionally popping open. I added a fishing line swivel so I wouldn’t lose the pin. A brilliant, yet simple design which only adds several seconds to the whole bonnet locking operation.I’m not sure if this system is ‘OK’ in racing circles, but it does help avoid bonnets opening accidentally. Unfortunately this “niffty” device was only on sale from the UK for a short period of time. So any handy sheet metal workers out there could have the opportunity to re-start manufacture & corner the market. Just check out my Yellow Spitfire next time you see it.larry mUndell.

USA Running LightsOne of my pet hates (other than luggage racks on Triumph Sports cars - really buy an SUV) are the horrible US spec ‘running’ or side lights, on late model Spitfires. My car originally came from California & I wasn’t up for a full body restoration, so I couldn’t weld & paint over them. Now I’m sick of them - they spoil the whole line of the car & the best looking Triumph, just shouldn’t have them. What to do with the b..... things?Well the front, I decided I could at least re-wire them to flash with the turn indicators, same as my Mazda MX5. It does add to the safety factor after all - never know when some old blind F..t in an MG could cut me off. But I am looking to change the unit to something smarter looking - even a smaller Commodore or Mazda unit, or I could pinch one off a Ferrari. I’m sure Michelotti would turn in his gave if he saw them.On the back however, they just have to go. But, until I do a re-spray (my sons can go through that pain once I’m dead & gone. They’ll probably sell all my cars & bikes for something more modern anyway) what do I do to cover the holes? When I was young & foolish, I drilled a couple of holes in my Mk1 bonnet in order to mount a ‘Union Jack Badge’ & I’m a Republican, so I won’t do that again. I could add another one of those awful US Spitfire badges I suppose. So while I figure this problem out I’ve temporarily stuck a cheaper “Leyland” decal over the hole - not that I really want to advertise the fact the my beloved Triumph was actually made by “Leyland”.Anyway, back to the garage to see what else I can fix.larry mUndell.

We are now mid-way through a

busy 2018 and there have been

over 20 events for members to

enjoy, including our monthly

meetings at the Manningham Hotel,

Wednesday Coffee Mornings,

Competition events, and several

Display Shows. So far, 96 different

TSOA members have attended

these events, with an average

attendance of 21 at each event.

Involvement in each of these events is not only enjoyable but is recognised by accrual of points by each TSOA participant. The points tally is the key ingredient for the annual award for our TSOA Clubmember of the year, currently held by Darren Green for the last 2 years. At our latest August committee meeting, we agreed to change the title from Clubman to Clubmember. For those members who wish to boost their Clubmember points tally, please note the list of activities for which points are awarded, recognising the effort and importance involved. So when you attend an event please make sure to sign the attendance sheet, which is usually held by the event organiser. This year’s change was to add a point for each activity where a Triumph was driven to the event – this is to encourage our members to exercise their steeds and show the public what they’re missing! I find that regular driving of my TR6 either keeps those gremlins away or flushes them out so you can find & fix ‘em. My own personal rule is Top Down (unless it’s actually raining) to get some wind in the hair, sporty rorting into the ears and a Triumph-ant smile on my face – it sure gets some funny looks when commuting to/from work in those dark hours at each end of a Winter’s day…rob Boykett ITR 611 Membership Secretary

Earlier this year, several old photographs

appeared in Traction showing several

TSOA members cars supporting the

Victorian Society for Crippled Children

back in 1964 and from these images we

gleaned just a little bit more insight into

our club history. The following equally

rare coloured photograph relates to when

brand new TR3s were assembled in

Melbourne, Australia from factory CKD

kits and in a period when taking coloured

photographs was quite rare and not like

in the present day?

This extremely interesting photograph, circa 1956, was taken at Fishermen’s Bend and shows the late Frank Parker in his capacity as Standard Motor Products “ test driver” at the wheel of a sparkling brand new, red Triumph TR3 (see the front cover for the colour photo). Frank Parker held this very responsible position which meant that he road tested every CKD TR3 that rolled out of the “sports car” assembly area of the (Standard-Triumph Australia Pty. Ltd.) Port Melbourne factory. The factory being so close to Fishermen’s Bend airfield meant that most of the road testing was carried out there. This now historic image has been made available by Bruce Parker, son of the late Frank Parker, (Bruce being the current owner of Ron Farrugia’s former TR), has graciously permitted me to share this treasured family photograph with fellow Triumph enthusiasts.graeme WhiteThis amazing photo only recently sent to Graeme. The photograph owner, Bruce Parker has given his permission to share it with members.

With a big Anniversary for TSOA only a few years away perhaps members could start to search through their Triumph photographs and send anything of interest in for publication.

Every Triumph has a long history and some could make very interesting reading for members new or old?

noteflectionsIt’s Friday 27th July as we head down the road to Phillip Island with mixed feelings of excitement and trepidation. Surely this is the year we will score an excellent result at this prestigious event – the Victorian 6Hr Relay at the Phillip Island circuit. Team Triumph has been preparing for this event for many weeks. Cars and drivers are all well turned out, the drivers are experienced in the nuances of regularity relays and under the professional control of Barry and Ursula and with a team of willing helpers to support, what’s to stop

us recording a top five finish?

The formula for doing so is simple, each driver to set a time that is a target for each and every lap with two golden (and unfortunately potentially conflicting) rules. Firstly, record lap times as close to the nominated time as possible so that bonus laps are added to the overall score. Secondly, UNDER

NO CIRCUMSTANCES, record a time faster than the nominated time, as this accrues penalty laps which incurs the wrath of the Team Manager and fellow drivers – and rightly so. Simple eh?To stand even a chance of winning, each team of six drivers must aim to both get close to their nominated times as possible to amass bonus points but not too close, as just ONE penalty point over the whole week-end immediately renders a team incapable of winning. In previous years, Team Triumph has been very successful in amassing bonus points but has also been guilty of over-reaching at times by straying into penalty territory, so could we make a better stab of it this time?Well, we cracked 50% of the objective in that there were no penalty laps over either Saturday practice or Sunday’s event which is history-making as it is a first for TSOA as far as anyone can remember. The weather conditions on Sunday deteriorated badly and drivers were finding it difficult to get consistently close to their nominated time. All apart from Rob, experienced mechanical issues over the week-end, Alister had a wheel bearing failure, then a broken

Phillip Island 6 Hour Relay 28– 29 July 2018

tail shaft (at high speed), which meant he could not complete his second run, David was running on six cylinders for a while, Ed had oil pressure problems and a radiator leak, Keith stopped on track as a result of a minor fuel problem and Geoff’s engine was also a bit grumbly for a while. But we finished in 13th spot out of 50 teams which, all things considered was commendable.Indeed, if compared to the winning team on the day, the number of completed driven laps recorded by Team Triumph was 143 with the winning team only two more ahead at 145. The striking difference was in the bonus laps score, they had 147 to Team Triumph’s 29. So, perhaps we were all too conscious of not breaking our time whereas a little more risk taking would have paid off. Hence the challenge and beauty of this type of event. Taking the safe route will mean a team is well placed (e.g.13th) at the end but will never win the event, but then going at it full tilt is very high risk. Oh well, back to the drawing board, there is always next year.ed FergUson

“Thanks all who helped and put up with that cold weather to allow us drivers to have fun. Special thanks to ursula & Barry for the organising work and Rob for the hospitality. Particularly we should mention Michael Kip who brought his car as a spare and a couple of us who had small problems kept tantalising him with the possibility of a run.Thirteenth was a good result reflecting our conservative approach to avoid breaking our lap times.Hope everyone had a good time, I did.”Thanks, Geoff St John Cox

“Thankyou to Team Triumph. It was just too much temptation to get the general invite to come along for the event and “help out” for a club member who doesn’t make it to many events. I had so much fun it was not only my pleasure but a real lift to be with such a great group of folks. I’m sure there are a lot of members who don’t make it to many events and I would like to encourage them to get involved and get some traction from Traction.I think we won on enthusiasm and team work. 13th was an achievement in a very competitive field. A really smooth operation, great drivers, great team manager, great help coordinator, great team dinner Saturday night and great crowd all round sense of hospitality. Its not possible to thank every person there for their individual contribution big and small it made the event. The only downer was that arctic wind on the pit wall. Its nearly impossible to see the cars coming with a hoody over your face! Now after all this I have to get back to working on the TR to get it out to an event myself. All the advice and ideas that come out of the discussions we had through the 2 days keeps up the enthusiasm.”Keith Pace #306

“Thanks again to Splatty and Chrissy for providing Team Triumph HQ and all the trimmings. Barry and Ursula for expert prep and management of the team. The pitwall team and support crew for all your help over the weekend. standing in the Antarctic Pitlane all day sunday was alone worth first place.Euan - thanks mate. There’s now silly questions, just silly drivers who don’t concentrate when putting new tyres on!! saved me from a rookie mistake. My driver team mates. well done. No penalties is a first. It meant we were strong all day and progressively got better. I need to work on better prep and more consistent laptimes.”Alister Ondarchie

Seventeen TSOA members

gathered at the meeting

place at Brandon Park

where the weather forecast

for the day was fine.

We also had two

visitors from Tasmania

accompanying the Ryans.

It was decided that Mark

Campbell was to be the

“Sweeper” or “Tail-end

Charlie” to follow the

group at the end to make

sure everyone was fine.

We travelled down the Frankston/Mornington Freeway turning off at Exit 15, however, our Sweeper was out of sight, nowhere to be found, as we later found out that he missed the turn off, but clever Mark eventually caught up with the group. Our morning coffee destination was at the Pelikan Societe Café at Hastings on the waterfront. The café was so crowded that we had to sit outside, and we then learned that at that particular hour of the day the inside of the Café was reserved for the breakfast people only. In the carpark at Hastings we were joined by our member from Frankston, Ed Martland. We travelled through some lovely back roads on the Mornington Peninsula through Bittern, Red Hill and Arthurs Seat.It was understood by a few members that we were going to stop in the carpark at Arthurs Seat

EMR to Hastings, Red Hill & Rye Sunday 27th May 2018

to take in the view, while others believed we were just passing by. Therefore, there were some cars that were behind the rest of the group, even though the carpark was full and the stay at the top was somewhat limited. A few chose to then go direct to the RSL at Rye for lunch rather than follow the scenic directions via Boneo to get there.Arriving at our lunch destination, we were delighted to find Mike Bindon, Maree Thompson and Pam Abbott waiting for us inside. It is becoming apparent that the amount of cars on the road on a Sunday makes driving far less relaxing than it used to be.We all enjoyed a lovely lunch at the RSL and a good chance to catch up with each other.Grateful thanks go to George Coulter and Peter Falkner for planning and organising a delightful day out.Jeanette Cain

The Victorian 6 Hour Regularity relay at Philip Island - The “Bathurst of Grass roots motorsport competition”

From Gary Tate, Bill Revill (TSOA member) and the 6 Hour Relay website.

The Victorian 6 hour regularity relay at Philip Island held on the 29th July 2018 will see the thirteenth running of this event. The first twelve years has seen capacity or near capacity fields and it still remains the most exciting event in the Nation for Club based competitors. The event has been designed in the spirit of the historic 6 hour Relay Races, which have a long history over some decades. The current event is designed to proved more appeal to a broad cross-section of competitors - junior, senior or just wanting to have a run. It has even been referred to as the “Bathurst for grass roots motor sport competitors”.

The wonderful part of the event is that it allows so many amateur competitors a chance to compete on one of Australia’s, and indeed the world’s, premier circuit.Perhaps the greatest feature of the day is the diversity of the cars. Although there is a minimum lap time so very fast cars are prevented from mixing it with the tiddlers, out of the 200 or so competitors at least 50 makes and models are represented. So different from most motor sport in which much racing is in limited formulas like Porsche Cup, 86’s, even V8Supercars - where the cars are basically the same - same sounds, same looks,

same gearchange points and the spectator can only tell them apart by the paintjob. The diversity of the field at the 6 hours was wonderful.....lots of MX5’s, many, many economical cars such as Excels and small Nissans, some other modern sports cars - some cars were race prepped, some were road registered, a team of current model Mustangs looked great and many other historic cars such as a Minis, Triumphs and MG’s were common. What a wonderful and diverse field of great looking and sounding cars all one track together!

• Theeventisopentoanyoneholding a CAMS L2S, L2SJ or above license. This allows grass roots motor sport competitors a chance to sample what higher level motor sport is all about without the added inherent costs.

• Vehiclerequirementsarethatofa sprint, so you don’t need a fully race prepared and log booked car. Most cars are eligible and only require the normal safety equipment needed at a sprint event, however all cars need a racing style harness and open cars or cars on racing tyres need a CAMS compliant roll cage.

• Theeventisspecificallydesigned to give club members the chance to form teams of drivers and pit crew to compete against other teams. It is not a race but rather a Regularity event and as such does not just involve outright speed. Each driver nominates a target lap time which they believe can be consistently maintained. If you go quicker than your time the lap doesn’t count and you receive “penalty laps” that reduces your score (i.e. one penalty lap will halve your score), if you hit your target time then you get the lap plus a bonus laps, if you are slower than your target time then you get only the lap.

• The6hourformatgiveseveryone a huge amount of racing time, enough to learn the circuit, settle into a rhythm and feel the same challenges that endurance drivers enjoy the world over.

With over 200 competitors on the day, the event develops it’s own atmosphere. Teams are working hard to stay within the strict time parameters, and faster cars are lapping the slower machinery every few laps. The Gippsland Car Club are proud to be foundation sponsors of this event and have over 30 of our members participating in the event. An example is our Committee member, Gary Tate, who currently competing in his 9th “6 Hour”, this year in his BMW 325 ci. Gary has been on the lower two steps of

the podium in the past and can you guess where he wants to be this year? His story of the event is following: Bill’s introduction to the event should give you a good idea of the drama that tends to unfold during the meet, with 50 teams that means 50 cars on the track at any one time. For our team “Arrow Racing” with 4 cars, we anticipate that each car will do about 250km – 320km round the circuit over the weekend at average lap speeds of 140+kph, so a lot can go wrong and it usually does! There were plenty of off track excursions (by others and not us), some even visited the barriers and the safety car had plenty to do as can be expected, however the good news was that there were no car to car contacts during the event. Our preparation was slowed by a collision at Winton six weeks before, when two of our team cars were written off! (See photo of race preparation!) But we were still able to get the team together and ready despite this setback. For this event we had a crack team with a seasoned team manager Geoff Tate, and 4 experienced drivers, Wayde Griffiths, Gavin Dunn, Nathan Blight and myself, all with high hopes of being on the podium again. Unfortunately we only achieved 6th place out of 50 and missed out on 2nd place due to one lap (out of 148 laps) exceeding

the nominated lap time by 0.042 of a second, tough! The other drama was my car, which developed an oil leak from the cam cover gasket on the last practice run on Saturday with oil pouring onto the hot exhaust. Unfortunately we were unable to repair it due to lack of parts and special tools and this meant that I had to share driving one of the Hyundai Excels on Sunday. This was challenging for me due to my lack of front wheel drive experience, I’ve never owned an FWD, let alone raced one! My instructions were, go into a turn over committed and flatten the throttle when you start to get loose... what? Though after about 5 laps I managed to get into a bit of a routine and only visited the kitty litter once, thank goodness.Despite the extremely cold weather on Sunday and a bit of rain (I’m told it was the coldest it has ever been for the 6 hour), our team placing somewhat down the ladder, and the problem with my BMW, it was a very good meeting which we all thoroughly enjoyed. I must give thanks to my team members for their efforts and especially Geoff for doing such a great job as team manager, can’t wait until next year! The magical sights and sounds of competing cars/motorcycles and smell of race fuel all coming from the track at Winton are awe inspiring and are experienced first-hand by the many historic followers who come from all around Australia; making Historic Winton possibly one of the favourite events on the motoring calendar.

Not surprisingly, one of the drawcards of this popular event is to wander through the pits and the various “special” car parks to view and enjoy the great mix of makes and models on site; or in the pits the oddities and the classic machinery competing over the weekend on Winton’s “short track”. The Austin Seven Club has been associated with this highly successful, long running event in partnership with the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association since day one. As an added attraction for car clubs, each year the organisers recognize the so called anniversaries of the various Marques and models and invites the associated car club to be involved with the Sunday parade laps to honour the particular anniversary. This year, one of the cars was the Austin-Healey Sprite celebrating 60 years. (Sadly, reference was made to the tragic passing of Anthony (Tony) Bennetto who drowned while snorkelling with his wife on

Heron Island back in October, 2017. Tony would be remembered by many long standing TSOA members for his active involvement with MSCA as well as in being the Sprite Club representative for many years. After retiring from Telstra he went into business servicing his beloved Sprites). The weather was a bit chilly on Saturday morning leaving Melbourne, with fairly thick fog in the valleys around Yea and across to Bonnie Doon, but it turned sunny and warm once at the track, which is a few miles out from Benalla. The ideal weather conditions prevailed over both the Saturday and Sunday and that certainly contributed to make the 42nd meeting a most enjoyable week-end. The non-stop schedule includes both car and motorcycle grids. One of the highlights for Triumph enthusiasts (and many others in attendance) was the appearance of Car 78, a bright yellow Triumph Spitfire in the Sb Group, and this

was highlighted over the public address system by the course commentators that they would like to see many more Spitfires taking to the Winton race track? Driver Gordon Bunyan put up a fine display in each of his events. (Gordon as readers would know is our current Secretary of TSOA Vic. Inc.). Also keeping the Triumph flag waving in Group Sa, was David Orchard in his BRG TR2 and Andrew Gibson in his beautifully presented TR3A , both sounded good and put on a very impressive showing. Scattered through the car parks were quite a number of Triumphs mainly from New South Wales and Victoria.

When it came to the motorcycle action, Triumph bikes were mainly seen in the hairy sidecar events in P3, up to 650cc category. These fearless guys and girls really try hard over the 5 race laps in their 1950-1960 era machines and always put on an outstanding tussle which certainly did not disappoint the big crowd watching.

I very much enjoyed the week-end so if you missed Historic Winton this year, try to find time next year. The only downer was the price of petrol being at its highest price ever, but then petrol prices are always a bit of a raffle.graeme White

Four Triumphs competed at Winton Historic Meeting this year, Andrew Gibson (TR3A), David Orchard (TR2), Ian Watt (Triumph 2.5 PI Saloon), and Gordon Bunyan (Triumph Spitfire).

Northeastern Victoria on a fine winter’s day is special,—bright sunshine, 20 degrees, no wind, —perfect older British car race weather!Private practice was available on Friday, and I managed to run 2 sessions to remind myself which way everything went, and to ponder the foibles of Winton Short Track. The car went beautifully, and I left the track with the expectation that the results for he next 2 days would be determined largely by the driver, and not the car.I have always found Winton challenging, and at times, frustrating, but in 2016, it “clicked”, and I achieved a time of 1.11, and won the Stan Jones Memorial Trophy for Sa Sports cars.In 2017, it did not “click” for me, but it did for Mike Heaton, (TR3a), and he took home the coveted shield.I hoped and felt 2018 could be a repeat of 2016.

A discussion with Gerry Lawson over dinner about Turn 3, the most important corner at Winton was very helpful. (see attached pic, inside wheel up). Qualifying was on Saturday morning, all Triumphs coming through with no major issues, and the feature race for Group S cars, 10 laps, was in the afternoon.I started just ahead of David, but in a mess in turn 1, through all the blue smoke, I saw David sail past me!Bloody Hell,—this was the (Stan Jones) trophy race and therefore a very serious matter.I did my best, and eventually got up the inside of David at the end of the straight before the s’s and David, being the English gentleman that he is, allowed me through, —although afterwards he wondered why he did this,—(hard -wired as a gentleman I believe.)The converted Stan Jones Memorial Trophy for Sa Sports Cars was mine once again!

(My wife was delighted, but still resists this wonderful icon being displayed anywhere in the house). There were 2 races on Sunday, and David and I had trouble-free runs, and a lot of fun.I got into low 1.12’s — sadly not into 1.11’s as in 2016, but I guess “the older I get, the faster I was” is the reason.I believe David’s times were better than he had achieved before.Ian Watt ran his immaculate Nb Triumph 2.5 PI after an absence from racing of 4 years, — due to pressures of work and recently bestowed International fame in his field, (not Historic Racing). The 4 year lay-off was used to make improvements to the car, but to Ian’s dismay, he was 4 seconds slower than 4 years ago!See what happens if you stop.Happily, the problem was not Ian, but the car,—slipping clutch, later found to be due to co-axial clutch release malfunction.

Easier to fix the car than the driver.—watch this space.Gordon Bunyan was there in his yellow Sb Spitfire, after an absence of 4 years also.He was very pleased to finally achieve reliability, and reports improvement in lap times over the whole weekend, and no failures. The crowd pleaser in the last race was Gordon’s spectacular “off” Turn 2, first to the outside, then across the track, and onto the inside,— Gordon told me a spectator told him that at least it looked elegant! The cream on the cake for me was the award for Best Presented Sports Car, judged by the scrutineers, and there were some pretty heavily indulged sports cars there that weekend.Fabulous weekend, well organised, helpful and happy Austin 7 folk, good weather, great safe racing, no failures, and brought home the bacon.andreW giBson (tsoa nsW)

The Beautiful and Rare Triumph Italia Coupe (1958–1962)

Sixty years on, the

incredible story of a

Triumph derivative, the

Triumph Italia 2000 coupe

deserves wider recognition

because until recently this

coupe had never ever been

sighted down under.

Fortunately, one superbly presented example (ex United Kingdom) landed in Victoria a few years back which enabled the very attractive Italian coupe to be seen in the “flesh”, rather than only in overseas motoring photographs. In isolation, the Italia two seater coupe is certainly a beautiful looking vehicle in the eye’s of most car buffs, but interestingly, it also has a number of similarities to that of another Triumph derivative the Swallow Doretti, which used the Triumph TR running gear during it’s also very short production period. The two seater Swallow Doretti roadster was built in 1954 and 1955 and was constructed on a tubular steel chassis with curvaceous steel and aluminium body panels. The Doretti was powered by a Triumph TR2 four cylinder 1991 cc wet sleeved motor, coupled to a four speed manual gearbox with optional overdrive on fourth gear. Some 276 Doretti’s were built before being withdrawn from production, after industrial pressure was threatened and applied by the very powerful William Lyons (later to become Sir William) head of the Jaguar Motor Car Company.

It may not be generally known that the concept of the sporty Italia coupe was the idea of Doctor Salvatore Ruffino, the then Italian Standard-Triumph importer, using the very robust Triumph TR3A chassis and for known and proven performance the associated TR3A running gear. A young and talented Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti designed the sleek Italia bodywork and the functional and comfortable cabin with the first proto-type going on display at the Turin Auto Show in 1958. After a few design modifications, the new coupe went into full production in 1959, be it small scale production, just as Standard-Triumph parent company started to experience industrial and financial difficulties in the UK; and whilst sales were reasonable, unfortunately the price was almost twice that of a brand new Triumph TR3A, making the new coupe a bit expensive for its location in the market place. According to Triumph folklore, almost all of the estimated 328 cars coming off the Vignale assembly line between 1959 to mid to late 1962 were left-hand drive, and

largely for worldwide distribution to Standard-Triumph dealers, (who had apparently agreed in principle to take at least one of the very attractive hand assembled vehicles?) Interestingly, Vignale never used a wooden buck to shape panels so each car is individual and it is believed, that no two Italia’s are exactly alike. That supports the known fact, that prospective buyers were often forewarned that the possibility of replacement body panels could not be guaranteed? It is thought that half a dozen right hand drive Triumph Italia’s were built especially for the troubled UK market, (the exact number of original factory right hand drive examples has never been ascertained as build records no longer exist?) Sadly, the Italia never reached its intended goal of Dr Ruffino of 1000 vehicles with production ceasing 1962 with some of the final units having TR3B specifications including the all syncromesh gearbox developed for the Triumph TR4.

The imminent take-over of Standard-Triumph by Leyland Motors and the Italia’s sale price virtually put paid to this distinctive looking coupe and the derivative was confined to Triumph motoring history rather than compete against the less expensive Triumph TR4 roadster, especially with the Surrey-top option. As we are all aware, the Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti went on to “greater things” to design many more models for Standard-Triumph cum Leyland, including the Triumph TR4 roadster, which the Italia predates, but many aspects of the Italia’s design can be seen in the TR4. Obviously, a number of Victorian TSOA members have seen the Triumph Italia following its appearance at the Xavier College Triumph concour a few years back, or exercising on the various motoring racetracks scattered around the State and members can now really appreciate the coupe’s attractive lines.

The cars current

condition is a testament

to the original quality

of Italian workmanship

and subsequent care of

this particular example.

Naturally, as one would

expect, being such an

“extremely rare” model

Triumph, surviving Italia’s

most dedicated Triumph

enthusiasts and collectors

worldwide.

The Indian government has put a ban on driving vehicles older than 15 years. Although we all value clean air and a safe environment, this obviously angers the owners of historic vehicles who’s effect on air pollution is very, very limited. Many surveys indicate that the mileage done by historic vehicles is very small and air pollution from public transport, the industry and burning coal for heating and cooking is a much bigger factor. With these stringent rules the general public is deprived of the enjoyment of seeing these parts of their historic heritage being used and enjoy, not only by the owner and his family and friends but also by the spectators or, in case of a charity event, the many beneficiary organisations.

NOTE: There is some action now to exempt ‘classic’ cars over 15 years but of course - what is a classic, how do we define it etc etc? .... In an Australian example, would they ( a Government department) exempt a 2000 Brock Commodore V8? This will cause endless squabbles. nugget nationals - low power, low cost, maximum fun! A new approach to motorsport Bill Revill

This month Bryant Park had a

visit from a genuine ‘low cost’

motorsport series - the Nugget

Nationals. The series is run

by a group of enthusiasts, for

enthusiasts, and is specifically

developed to provide low cost

motorsport.

Designed to bring the cheap thrills back into track days, the rules are simple. To compete in the points based rounds, you must purchase/borrow/share a car that comes in at under $3000 and has a naturally aspirated engine with a capacity of no more than 1500cc. (No rotaries allowed). Your Nugget car of choice will compete in a series of Motorsport disciplines ranging from Sprint days, hill climbs, drag racing, endurance rounds and dyno sessions - plus a few surprises! The enthusiastic organiser, Ying

Bot, was happy to describe the birth of the series. “ Many of us were competing informally, then we started to organise track days”, she said. “But costs got out of hand. we still wanted to compete so we decide to develop a low cost series - maximum cost of car $3000, minimal modifications, 1500 cc maximum, to make uncool cars cool again” she said. The series has been a great success. A variety of cars compete, some registered to drive to the track, some with roll cages and others very stock. “it’s all about providing a safe and pleasant environment” says Ying “ People can compete and enjoy the competition without being daunted by other, much faster, competitors. We are all about introducing people to enjoyable motorsport.”The series has been operating since 2014 and runs through various Victorian circuits and includes a run at Wakefield Park in NSW once a year. The series has about six events annually and both CAMS and AASA licences are acceptable. Event permits are via AASA and these provide the insurance cover. For more information see their website at https://nuggetnationals.wordpress.com/

Ian McCowan - a typical competitor

Iain McCowan, who came to Bryant Park with his Father, Euan, provides an example of a Nugget racer. He started 2014 and only runs in the Nugget series. His car is a Honda Civic (Named “Frank”)and fits the requirements - 1.5 litre, under $3000 (he found in the backyard of his parents friends house and , after some dealing with friends, picked it up for $500) The car is stripped and has some homemade aero devices such as splitters, wings, diffuser and sideskirts . A rollcage and harness belts are fitted along with competition seats and stiffening links are fitted to the Coilover shock mounts. Room is provided for a passenger, as at some events passengers may be carried, thus enhancing the day for all the family and friends. The engine is standard and the Honda runs Yokohama Advans ADOR 8R tyres- the most expensive parts on the car!

Iain does about 6 events per year, which includes the Nugget Nationals series and some Winton track days. The Nugget series has one event each year at Wakefield Park at Goulburn, NSW but Ian generally doesn’t get up that way. Entry costs are typical for all club motorsport - about $220 for Winton and circuits, hillclimbs like Bryant Park are about $120 for the day.

Good fun? Yes! Economical motor sport? Yes! Again as we see with so many series these days, this provides another outlet for low cost, great fun motorsport.

1 “everyday modifications for Your spitfire, Herald, Vitesse and Gt6” by iain Ayre The Crowood Press UK 2016 - ISBN 978 1 78500 175 8 - Purchased from UK Book Depository $33 postedThis is a 174 page soft cover edition with many clear photographs to support the well written text. The author draws upon the experiences of Triumph owners & enthusiasts from the UK, USA & Canada. There are chapters covering buying the right car, the design weaknesses of each model and most importantly, what can be done to improve each car and make it more reliable, and more pleasurable to drive in modern traffic. The Pros & Cons for each component are discussed at length and guide line costs given. I particularly liked the owner case studies which are given at the end of the book, and noted how similar the green Canadian 1500 Spitfire is to my own car. There is also some

stimulating discussion of some of the more controversial mods on upper engine oil supply, oil coolers on road cars, 5 speed gearbox conversions and updating GT6 ‘donut’ suspensions. Overall, a great gift for the Triumph enthusiast. Available on EBay, but still cheapest via ‘The UK Book Depository’. Highly recommended.

2 “triumph spitfire and Gt6 – the Complete story” by richard dredgeThe Crowood Press 2014- ISBN 978 1 84797 703 8 - Purchased from UK Book Depository $40 postedThis is a 176 page hard back edition. It covers the general history of the Spitfire & GT6, with chapters on the development of each successive model, as well as buying & modifying these cars. There’s a good section on motor sport, although US racing is a little light on for detail. There’s plenty of detail on engine & gearbox codes & I particularly like the use of period accessory advertisements & sales brochures (which is a particular interest of mine). Most of the photos focus on right hand drive UK spec cars, so there’s not much specific content for readers who have imported their cars from North America. A great all-round reference for the owner enthusiast – recommended.3 Websites – ‘Triumph Spitfire Performance Enhancements – Auskellian’Paul Geithner’s Spitfire Technical site is one of the best sources of information - & is a must read if you want to extract more performance out of your car – Highly recommended. The information is very technical & scientific, supported with great diagrams & photographs. My latest Mk3 performance engine build is based on this site & the Kastner tuning manual. – Enjoy. My cars are very similar to his.

4 Triumph Chat Sites – “The Triumph Experience” – Google this siteThis is a great site for all Triumph Sports car owners, & it’s free to join. Whilst 90% of members are based in the USA (where most Triumphs were sold) there are active enthusiasts from all around the world including Canada, Europe & Australia. There is a registry of cars for each model & you can set up your own car profile with as much detail & photos as you wish (or remain completely anonymous), as well as ‘Buy, Swap & Sell’ & technical articles. I particularly like the informative – question & answer forum. Even though I have owned Spitfires for over 30 years, I never refer to myself as an expert – some of the enthusiastic responses come from Spitfire owners who obviously have engineering & extensive racing back grounds. There is informed discussion & debate on all aspects of the Triumph cars & their challenges. I really recommend having a look at this site & would imagine the other Triumph models are covered as well as the Spittys & GT6s are. With all chat sites, you need to evaluate what you read, and decide who’s advice has credence.larry mUndell.
