Hair transplantation encompasses taking some parts of the scalp that are bald-resistant and moving them to a bald area. Bald-resistant areas of the scalp are mostly found at the sides and at the back of the head. These transplanted areas will generally grow hair throughout a person’s life since it is proven to be genetically resistant to be bald. The transplant would look more natural if only a few hairs are relocated per session. This is because of the fact that human hair grows in one to four strands of hair per follicle group.

Generally, there are three types of hair transplant methods.

Follicular Unit Strip Surgery or FUSS is a procedure where a strip of hair from the donor region is taken and implanted on the thinning or balding area. Sutures are then used to close the donor area. It would usually take several days to heal the area. This procedure would be best for average to extreme baldness cases since it allows several grafts to be transplanted in a single session.

Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE is a procedure where the strands of hair are transplanted from the back and sides of the head in groups of one up to four, since this is how hair naturally grows. Since it mimics how human hair actually grows, the procedure delivers results that look more natural. Another advantage of this procedure is that it does not involve major and deep cuttings. With this, the recovery time is shorter and the scars are fewer.

Scalp Reduction is a procedure where the bald area is surgically removed and the hair-bearing scalp is stretched in order to replace what has been removed. The method is very expensive and could also increase

the possibility of the tightening of the scalp, which would only lead to its thinning.

When thinking to undergo these hair transplant procedures, one should first understand the coverage experienced prior to hair loss will never be the same. However, this surgical procedures can make scalp achieve more fullness and covers those thinning areas. Additionally, hair transplantation carries several risks and complications as with other forms of surgery. There may be a possibility that the skin graft will die and may require a repeat of the process or small bumps may form on the scalp. Though, it is normally safe when it is performed by qualified surgeons. But still, each case is distinct and the reaction of each patient may differ from case to case. Patients should understand the whole process before considering the surgery.
