Healthy Students Are Better Learners It's 8:35. Board markers are in every teacher’s hand ready to start the day. The teachers have carefully constructed learning experiences of visual input, hands-on activities, reading and experimentation – all designed to help their students learn. When teachers look around the room, do they see bright eyes and positive, expectant expressions, or do they see squirming, sleepy, or distracted students. Are the children stressed, depressed or anxious? According to experts, the internal environment of the brain is an integral part of learning, just as important as the classroom environment. Teachers may find in some cases that their students are not able to learn due to poor nutrition or inadequate hydration. Nutrition for children and teens is based on the same principles as nutrition for adults. Everyone needs the same types of nutrients — such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat. This means that every student needs different amount of specific nutrients at different ages. So what's the best formula to fuel student’s growth and development? Check out these nutrition basics for girls and boys at various ages, based on the Dietary Guidelines of America. Consider these nutrient-dense foods: (a) Protein. Choose seafood, lean meat and poultry, eggs, beans, peas, soy products, and unsalted nuts and seeds. (b) Fruits. Encourage your child to eat a variety of fresh, canned, frozen or dried fruits — rather than fruit juice. If your child drinks juice, make sure it's 100 percent juice and limit his or her servings. (c) Vegetables. Serve a variety of fresh, canned or frozen vegetables — especially dark green, red and orange vegetables, beans and peas. (d) Grains. Choose whole grains, such as whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, popcorn, quinoa, or brown or wild rice. (e) Dairy. Encourage your child to eat and drink fat-free or low-fat dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, cheese or fortified soy beverages. Aim to limit student’s calories from solid fats and added sugar, such as butter, cake and soda. Look for ways to replace solid fats with vegetable and nut oils, which provide essential fatty acids and vitamin E. Oils are naturally present in olives, nuts, avocados and seafood. i It is important to nourish the brain with healthy food and water as well as optimizing their internal environment. These factors will enable students to truly engage in their classroom environment. Healthy students will continue to be better on all levels of achievement. >> SCHOOL GENERAL CLEANING We would like to inform you that our school has had extensive general cleaning and disinfection from 7 - 9 August 2015. The school has done the following: (1) Sanitization of all classrooms in every level. As well as common student areas like the canteen, library, student lounge and playground. (2) All classroom furniture such as tables, chairs, bookshelves and cubbyholes have been disinfected. (3) Air Conditioners in all classrooms and common areas in the school have been cleaned. This process is arranged to maintain and strengthen the school’s “Clean and Healthy” environment program. >> PARENTS/NANNIES/ DRIVERS TO ACCESS THE SCHOOL GROUND / FACILITIES At the beginning of the school year NHJS traditionally opens its doors to parents allowing them access to the school for the first few days of the school year. This allows students and parents to see for themselves the facilities for the new school year. However, for the safety of our students we will revert back to our regular rules of access to our facilities starting this week. This means that parents will only have access to the new canteen and front lobby of the school. All other areas of the campus are off limits unless by appointment there is a need to enter the facilities. We hope that parents understand our concern with safety and help us to make the school a safer place by abiding by the regulations set by the school. >> PARENT/NANNY ID Parents or nannies / drivers have to wear school /visitor ID when they enter the school ground. You can wear either visitor ID or

Parent/Nanny ID. Some parents have filled in a form for requesting Parent/Nanny ID when they collected starter pack for student.

The primary function of this ID card is for identification of the individual and school safety. Hence, you only can access until canteen or lobby area. School will give one free ID card (Parent or Nanny). For additional or lost card, you have to pay Rp 50.000 /card.
