Please visit https://bren-tes.beanstack.org and sign in using your DCPS login information:Username: Student ID NumberPassword: Student’s Six-Digit Birth Date (MMDDYY) Please see the attached letter for more infor-mation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask Ms. Bettina ([email protected]). Brent’s December Book Fair a Great SuccessThank you to all volunteers, in particular Jill Smudde and Heidi Applegate, and of course, all shop-pers for a successful book fair. Happy Reading!

Calling All SpellersCan you use it in a sentence please? What is the origin of the word? Can I have the definition? This month Brent is all a buzz with the sounds of a spelling bee! It all starts with an information session that will be held on Wednesday, December 13 at 8:00 a.m. in room 306 for grades 3, 4 and 5.

Depending on interest we will then have a follow up spelling bee to eliminate candidates so that we will have 25 candidates compete in the Brent School Spelling Bee on Friday, January 26th at 1:00 p.m. The school’s top three spellers will then advance to represent Brent in the Cluster Competitions, where they will compete with students

from other schools to qualify for the city-wide competition. Please note that the rules state that only students in grades 4 and up are eligible for the Cluster Competi-tion, so our school bee will serve as a practice round for Grade 3 stu-dents in order for them to become even more competitive next year.

Students will be receiving their spelling word study lists at the informational meeting as well as a permission slip to participate, so we encourage parents to help them review the words at home. More information and study tips will be provided later. For more informa-tion contact Ms. Wilson ([email protected]), Ms. Hairston ([email protected]), or Ms. Leary ([email protected]).

Recess AttireAs the days are getting colder please make sure that your child is properly dressed for the weather. During recess your child needs to have a coat, legs covered and any other materials that will keep them warm for their 30 minute recess period. If a child is not properly dressed they will not be allowed outside. Also please let your child know that “coats are not optional” and they are to be brought down and worn the whole recess period.

ing that students arrive at 5:40 p.m. on their respective evenings wearing concert white/black (i.e. white shirt/blouse/dress, black/dark bottoms). The concerts will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. so I encourage you to arrive early to secure a seat. Thanks to partnership with The Source Theater and GALA His-panic Theater in DC our 3rd grade students will be able to experience a FREE presentation on Duke Ellington on December 13, 2017 at The GALA Hispanic Theater. Students will experience an in-teractive journey through Duke Ellington’s DC—from U Street and the Howard Theatre to Anacostia - as they groove along with Duke’s jazz piano and a live jazz trio. The students will join amazing per-formers, as they discover how a local hero influenced the Harlem Renaissance, helped shape the cul-tural history of Washington D.C., and became an international star. Finally, congrats to all of the students that auditioned for Dear Edwina Jr.! We have a fantastic cast, ensemble, and stage crew and we are incredibly proud of the stu-dents’ hard work. Performances will be April 12 and April 13 .
