From shelter for a day ... to stability for a lifetime.

While providing emergency overnight shelter due to frigid temperatures, Horizon House showed that it is more than just a place to get out of the cold...

“I stayed at Horizon House last week and slept as well as I would in a hotel ... even better. They treated us like we were paying customers in a hotel, but they show that we are more than customers. They care.” -Pablo E.

Horizon House’s 11th annual flagship event, held in cooperation with the Indianapolis Colts at their training facility, to take place in the Fall, 2015 (exact date to be determined).

In 2014, Horizon House served 3,361 homeless neighbors. This is a 23 percent increase over the previous year. The most interesting point is that 62 percent of these neighbors were new to Horizon House. We continually see individuals who are new to us and, in most cases, new to homelessness-this means that the need still continues. On average, we see 160 neighbors a day.

Our main aim is to assist homeless neighbors in identifying and overcoming barriers in their lives in order to end their homelessness. We do this while showing them hospitality and treating them with respect and dignity. We accomplish our aim by serving as a day-shelter with multiple, comprehensive services available in one location.

Basic Engagement Services/Case Management - Our services (day shelter, restrooms, showers, laundry, clothing, access to phones and mail delivery) are crucial for helping clients maintain their dignity, while meeting their immediate needs. These initial services also set the stage for access to other services that address long-term needs and foster self-sufficiency. Case Managers provide assessment, supportive services, goal identification, referral to health care, and linkage to resources and services that will encourage stabilization and self-sufficiency. Last year, case managers logged 4,544 assessments and meetings. In 2014, our short-term services included providing the opportunity for neighbors to take 8,229 showers and wash 3,788 loads of laundry.

Employment Training - Our program provides neighbors with job readiness training, job search, and employment placement and retention by offering a variety of employment services and ongoing support through Vocational Case Management services. In 2014, 129 neighbors completed the program and 85 neighbors obtained employment.

Street Outreach - Our outreach team engages persons living on the streets by building trusting relationships, providing life-sustaining supplies, addressing urgent needs, and linking them to health care and other services. In 2014, Outreach encountered 612 neighbors. This was an increase of 33 percent over the previous year. Horizon House outreach coordinates Professional Blended Street Outreach. This team incorporates members from eighteen organizations who combine efforts to reach homeless neighbors.

In-House Collaborative Partners - We partner with many organizations to provide needed services. One of our main partners is Eskenazi Health who runs the Eskenazi Health Pedigo Health Center at Horizon House. The Health Center provides holistic, integrated medical and mental health care to homeless individuals. We also partner with Indiana Legal Services, WorkOne, Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation, Veterans Administration, Marion County Probation, Marion County Parole, Marion County Public Health, Second Helpings, and many more.

On a very cold night, one of our neighbors, Bernard, would not go to a shelter without finding a place for his dog Oreo. Horizon House assisted Bernard in finding shelter for Oreo, starting employment training, and more. The Indianapolis Star story gained national attention after being picked up by the Huffington Post.
