SYLVANIA- Nine years ago the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce felt that the area needed a showcase for local business. The idea blossomed from a small local expo at Timberstone Junior High School to the 9th annual FREE SHOWCASE Sylvania Expo.
The expo promises to be even bigger than 2010. Last year 4000 people attended the one-day event. Chamber Executive Director Pat Nowak states “The Chamber recognized nine years ago that it is important to highlight local businesses and the expo is the perfect venue. It gives all businesses a face in the community, is an effective use of advertising and allows interaction one on one with residents and other businesses.”
The 2011 “Showcase Sylvania” Business Expo will be held on March 26 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Sylvania Sports and Exhibition Center at Tam-O-Shanter, 7060 Sylvania Avenue,
featuring representation from 162 area businesses. Since a large number of people are expected to attend the expo, the chamber has free parking for the
expo on-site at Tam-O-Shanter as well as at Olander Park, Southview High School and Boulevard Church of Christ.
Featured this year is the ProMedica
Health Pavilion offering free blood glucose screenings, BMI and body fat screenings, blood pressure screenings and bone density screenings. An ambulance will be stationed on-site for guests to tour and there will be important informative booths about cancer, strokes, surgical services, rehab, home health care and more. Franklin Park Vision will be adjusting eye glasses on site and the $1.00 donation will be given to Assistance Dogs.
Chairmen for the 2011 expo are Kevin Lent and Karen McMahon. Both realize the importance of the business expo as a unique way to showcase the area’s private and professional business diversity. Lent states “visitors to the Expo can learn about the tremendous variety of retail, organizations and service oriented companies’ right in their neighborhood

Emily Winkle, Nina Garone, Laura Glover, Pat Nowak and Karen McMahon greet-ed nearly 5,000 visitors to the Expo in 2010. Event organizers are expecting an even larger crowd for this year’s Expo.

which helps stimulate business.” Karen McMahon adds “A
Taste of Sylvania is a great a part of “Showcase Sylvania.” Local supermarkets, restaurants and coffee shops will be offering fresh ideas for entertaining, dinner and healthy alternatives meals. Guest speakers include Daniel Nieman from The Toledo Blade.
Part of the fun at the expo is the giveaways and great interactive games that many of the vendors bring. This year the expo again has designed a children’s area featuring Sylvania Franciscan Academy, Over the Rainbow Day Care and The Bouncee Thing. Entertainment will be provided by America’s Pride, Jean Holden and El Corazon de Mexico and Mark Harris.
The Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce will also be announcing their Chamber Champion’s at a preview party for “Showcase Sylvania” on March 25 from 6–8:00 p.m. CPW Events Facility hosts a tremendous grazing and cocktail reception for the vendors, chamber members and nominees. The nominees from the business and non-profit sector
are honored for their business acumen and philanthropy. The award is a one-of-a-kind art piece, designed by Homer Yarrito, specifically for the Chamber awards. It is a dramatic glass piece, produced individually, so the explosion of unique colors is different in each piece.
The Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce produces Showcase Sylvania Expo with tremendous cooperation from businesses. Executive Sponsors are Central Park West Event Facility, Metamora State Bank, The Toledo Blade, The Flower Hospital and Paramount HealthCare.
Platinum sponsor is Lourdes College. Gold sponsors are Lamar Outdoor Advertising, Sylvania Advantage and the VZN Group. The Chamber Champion sponsor is Sylvania Herald Newspapers.
SHOWCASE Sylvania is a free, family-friendly event that highlights local business in a unique setting and offers something for everyone. You can spend an hour or an afternoon. For more information please contact the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce at 419-882-2135.

www.savorytree.comHave your trees inspected now by one of our
Certified Arborists to locate storm damage potential. Structural weakness can easily be spotted now
while the trees are dormant. Flaws such as V-type crotches, heavy limbs, and split branches are
prone to failure in Winter or Spring storms. Pruning, cabling, and guying can help prevent such injury to
your landscape and home.Call on one of our licensed diagnosticians to
inspect your lawn and recommend treatment for the upcoming season. Let us explain to you how our
customized programs differ from those of other lawn care providers.
Since 1951, our firm has been caring for the trees in the Sylvania area. Our emphasis has always
been on providing a correct initial diagnosis of problems in the landscape, so that proper care can

There were plenty of fun activities for children at the 2010 Showcase Sylvania Expo. The 2011 Expo will once again feature a designated Chil-dren’s area featuring Sylvania Franciscan Academy, Over the Rainbow Day Care and The Bouncee Thing.
