    APPROACH

Identify, analyze, and critically evaluate relevant information & data froma TBL perspective (specifically) and sustainability (generally)

Conduct rigorous secondary research to provide depth and breadth inthe analysis and evaluation of your information

Use recognized resources such as GRI indicators plus concepts fromreputable sources such as The Business Guide to Sustainability and

Step by Step Guide to Sustainability etc

Use specific information to identify the real situation about which youare writinga company, an industry, a government etc

    APPROACH: 5 STEPS

    Find a company

Figure out what phase it is currently at (A)

Deduce what phase it could be elevated to (B)

Work out what needs to change to go from A to B

Create a monitoring system to keep it at B

What are the identified goals of the company?

What phase have you identified them as being?

Do you think they could realistically improve on a

    cost/benefit basis?

    Could they operate more sustainably?

Will they survive long-term if they dont change?

If they have to change, what are your recommendations?

    WHAT TO MONITOR

What are the main points or issues that will

    need to be monitored?

    What would be the frequency?

Who would need to do the monitoring?

Would they need outside professional help?

    An effective conclusion should:

Link generic indicators to specific indicators - with reasons for any

    changes or variations

Identify what the company is doing right

Identify what the company is doing wrong

    Identify amendments, recommendations, correctionswith reason,

logic, and ideally with quantitative analysis

    Case study: Farming in Australia

You are a consultant to the CEO of an Australian farming company and he wants to set up

a farm to grow potatoes, rice or beef cattle. The market is currently paying $100 a tonne

for potatoes, $200 a tonne for rice, and $2,000 a tonne for beef. Australia is known as

the driest continent on earth. He could grow any one of the three products as the

market is strong for all of them.

    Basic Facts

    It takes:-

100 litres of water to grow 1 kilogram of Potatos

4,000 litres of water to grow 1 kilogram of Rice

13,000 litres of water to grow 1 kilogram of beef

Question:Which product do you recommend to grow on this farm and what would be your

justification. What points would need to be considered?

You have just been employed as the Sustainability Officer of a company and

your boss has asked you to figure out how to assess the companys

sustainability. You conduct an initial analysis and figure out that the

company is in the third phase (compliancerisk reduction).

Your boss then presents your report to the Supreme Uber Boss who demands

that the company must be transformed to reach the fifth phase of Strategic

    Sustainability.

You go back to your desk and start to create a monitoring system that will

bridge the gap between phase 3 and phase 5.

What are the key points you will need to consider, and what would be your

    process?
