Overview This is a dynamic document; users should check back for any document updates before

installing or updating software. This document contains: The latest required software versions and patches for both IBM and Oracle software to enable Oracle

products using AIX 6 or AIX 5L on IBM System p servers. The latest information about significant interoperability issues and frequently encountered problems.

The patches listed are the minimum required. For any IBM product, superseding AIX

Technology Levels or individual patches can always be installed unless otherwise indicated

below. For example: the minimum AIX requirement for Oracle 10gR1 is AIX V5.3 TL0 plus the patches

listed below. Therefore for Oracle 10gR1, any technology level such as TL1 or TL2 which is higher than the

minimum can be used instead.

POWER6 Support

The minimum AIX 5.x levels for POWER6 based models are AIX 5.2 TL10 and AIX 5.3

TL6. The POWER6 based models are fully exploited in AIX 6.1 and AIX 7.1.

POWER7 Support

IBM AIX 5.3 is planned to be supported on all models of POWER7 processor-based servers

delivered in 2010.

The minimum level of AIX Version 5.3 to support the POWER7 processor-based server is:

AIX 5.3 TL11 SP2 or later

The POWER7 750, 755, 770 and 780 also support these technology levels:



For IBM AIX 6.1 support of POWER7 processor-based servers, the minimum level

requirements depend on the server model:

POWER7 750 and 755: AIX 6.1 TL4 SP2 or later

POWER7 770 and 780: AIX 6.1 TL4 SP3 or later

IBM supports other technology levels on these models:



Starting with AIX 6.1 TL4 SP3, POWER7 mode is fully supported.

POWER7 is fully supported in AIX 7.1 GA.

Generic Certifications

Certain certifications are executed once and when approved by Oracle cover all OS versions

and system configurations that IBM supports. 10 Gigabit Ethernet and IP over InfiniBand

are supported with AIX as generic certifications. Customers should work with their IBM

representative to confirm the combinations of NIC cards, switches and OS patches that are

appropriate for their requirements.

10 Gigabit Ethernet

For the 10GE certification these configuration options were necessary, consider them in your

10GE infrastructure.

LACP timeout: Use the “long timeout” switch setting for the amount of time to wait

before sending LACPDUs.

Flow control: Enable flow control at the switch port and on the server side ports

(using HMC) for the 10GE adapter or 10GE HEA configuration.

UDP tuning: The RAC interconnect uses UDP for interprocess communications.

Tune the udp_sendspace and udp_recvspace parameters until the “netstat –s”

command indicates there are no “socket buffer overflows”. See the Network Tuning

Jumbo frames: Enable Jumbo frames on the RAC interconnect:

1. Configure Jumbo frames at the switch port. In the certification project we set

Jumbo frames to 9252 at the switch.

2. Configure Jumbo frames on the server side ports (using HMC) for the 10GE

adapter or 10GE HEA configuration.

3. Configure Jumbo frames in the Etherchannel (network interface) definition.

Certified Offerings: support for optional configurations

Oracle and IBM have agreed that certain configuration options do not require individual

certifications and can be used at the discretion of the customer, these include:

With certified VIOS combinations customers may use virtual SCSI (vSCSI) with or without

N Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) to attach disk for data storage and associated raw disk-based

Voting and OCR. This may be done for both ASM and GPFS. Customers must confirm IBM

support of the configuration and install any required AIX and Oracle updates before using.

When using Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and IP over InfiniBand customers may

configure the network routing using either EtherChannel or AIX virtual IP address (VIPA)

based on their requirements. Customers must confirm IBM support of the configuration and

install any required AIX and Oracle updates before using.



VIPA on 11gR2

In order to use AIX VIPA on Oracle 11gR2, users need to apply patch 10203061. Note,

patch 10203061 also contains the 11.2.0.1.2 patchset.

Specific AIX PTFs (fixes) for APARs (problems), Technology Levels, Service Packs and

If a given PTF is not downloadable from this location, customers should request an iFix through

Oracle availability on AIX 6 or AIX 5.3 implies support for any hardware that is supported by

IBM Software Requirements and PTFs for AIX 7.1 support of Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.1 or higher)

The requirements for the software products certified on Oracle Database 11gR2 with AIX 7.1 are

described in this section. AIX 7.1 is certified on Oracle Database 11gR2 using AIX 7.1 TL0 SP1

or higher. It is also necessary that the fix for APARs IZ87564 and IZ87216 be applied. For

Oracle RAC 11gR2 the fix for Oracle bug 9457492 must also be applied. The 64 bit kernel is

required for all Oracle Database 11gR2 installations.

VIOS

VIOS 2.2 is certified on Oracle RAC 11gR2 with AIX 7.1. The Virtual LAN feature supports

both the public network and private RAC interconnect. The Virtual SCSI feature supports

Clusterware (OCR and Vote disks) and ASM storage. These are the certified code levels, use

these code levels or higher:

Linking Fails With “Id: 0706-010 The binder was killed by a signal: Segmentation fault”

When installing Oracle 10gR2, 11gR1 or 11gR2 on a server running AIX 7.1 the following error

may occur: “Id: 0706-010 The binder was killed by a signal: Segmentation fault”. For additional

details, refer to Metalink note 1264074.1.

HACMP and PowerHA

For AIX 6.1 and Oracle RAC 11gR2, HACMP 5.4.1 and PowerHA 6.1 are certified.

Users should review MetaLink Note 404474.1 for the software version or patches required

and the latest HACMP/PowerHA information. The detailed software requirements for

HACMP/PowerHA are documented only in MetaLink Note 404474.1. PowerHA is the new

name for HACMP starting with version 5.5.

GPFS

For AIX 6.1 and Oracle RAC 11gR2, GPFS 3.2 is certified.

Use of Persistent Reserve

For GPFS 3.2, the introduction of Persistent Reserve improves failover functionality and allows

for the Oracle OCR and Voting disks to be placed on the GPFS filesystem. If Persistent Reserve

is not used, the Oracle OCR and Voting disks must be on raw devices.

In the event of SAN connection failures across multiple nodes, if the second and any subsequent

SAN failure occurs while GPFS recovery is already in progress then the total GPFS recovery

time may exceed the default Oracle CSS misscount and result in additional node evictions. To

protect against this multiple SAN failure scenario, customers can choose to locate the Oracle

OCR and Voting disks on raw devices, instead of on a GPFS filesystem.

For AIX 6.1 and Oracle Database 11gR2, Live Partition Mobility (LPM) is certified for non-

Additional AIX 6.1 Issues in Oracle Database 10gR2

The Oracle 10gR2 OUI and configuration assistant programs do not recognize AIX 6 V6.1 as a supported release.

Resolution: For the OUI program, use the ˜-ignoreSysPrereqs” option as in the command: ˜ ./runInstaller “ignoreSysPrereqs”

For the configuration assistant program, select the skip validation option and continue to verify other

errors.

The Oracle 10gR2 ”rootpre.sh” program displays unnecessary error messages related to AIX AIO.

Problem description: When running the ”rootpre.sh” program, messages like the following will be displayed:

Configuring Asynchronous I/O....

Asynchronous I/O is not installed on this system.

You will need to install it, and either configure it yourself using

'smit aio' or rerun the Oracle root installation procedure.

Configuring POSIX Asynchronous I/O....

Posix Asynchronous I/O is not installed on this system.

You will need to install it, and either configure it yourself using

'smit aio' or rerun the Oracle root installation procedure.

Resolution:

A replacement ”rootpre.sh” is available for download from Oracle MetaLink, reference

Oracle Patch 6718715, ”Support for HACMP 5.4 in rootpre.sh script”. Even though

Patch 6718715 targets HACMP 5.4 it contains the changes for AIX 6.1 AIO. Patch

6718715 supersedes Patch 6613550, which was previously recommended. Make sure to

download the 10.2.0.3 version of Patch 6718715

AIX 6.1 will issue an error message when attempting to create a volume group with a disk that is formatted by Oracle ASM.

Problem Description: This additional checking by AIX was to prevent accidentally overwriting an Oracle ASM disk. The error message from the ”mkvg” command will be similar to the following:

0516-1339 /usr/sbin/mkvg: Physical volume contains some 3rd party

volume group.

0516-1397 /usr/sbin/mkvg: The physical volume hdisk1, will not be

added to the volume group.

0516-862 /usr/sbin/mkvg: Unable to create volume group.

Resolution: The force option (-f) on the “mkvg” command will not work for an ASM disk. The AIX “dd”

command can be used to clear the Oracle ASM information for the disk. The “dd” command will

overwrite the existing data on the ASM disk. The following is a sample command:

dd if=/dev/zero/ of=/dev/rhdisk1 bs=1024 count=10

Use the “dd” command only if you are absolutely sure it is safe to overwrite the existing

data on the ASM disk. Once overwritten, the original data will no longer be retrievable.


Linking Fails With “Id: 0706-010 The binder was killed by a signal: Segmentation fault”

on AIX 6.1




When installing Oracle 10gR2, 11gR1 or 11gR2 on a server running AIX 6.1 the following error

may occur: “Id: 0706-010 The binder was killed by a signal: Segmentation fault”. The specific

AIX 6.1 TL’s and SP’s listed below contain the problem. The known APAR fixes are listed for

each fixed release. For additional details, refer to Metalink note 1264074.1.

Applications using IOCP may fail in GetMultipleCompletionStatus()

Applications using I/O completion ports (IOCP) may crash the system or lead to an application

hang in the GetMultipleCompletionStatus() routine. It is recommended that Oracle 11gR2

customers running on AIX 6.1 TL4 or TL5 apply the respective APAR fix.

Paging space growth may occur unexpectedly with 64K (medium) pages enabled

Unexpected growth in paging space utilization may occur on Oracle database applications even

when sufficient memory exists to keep the database application memory in RAM. This may be

observed on systems using 64K (medium) memory pages. While the performance effects from

the paging are negligible, paging space may be depleted over time. In an Oracle RAC

environment, this may result in node evictions. Refer to Metalink note 1088076.1.

Node evictions due to excessive AIX kernel paging

Customers who experience Oracle RAC node evictions due to excessive AIX kernel paging

should carefully review and implement the best practices recommended in the document listed

below. Testing and experience have found that memory overcommitments may cause

scheduling delays for Oracle’s “oprocd” process resulting in node evictions. Implementing all of

the Best Practice’s recommendations will reduce scheduling delays and corresponding oprocd

initiated evictions.

Performance degradation when AIO buffer size is greater than 128KB

Asynchronous IO (AIO) fastpath can trigger lock contention in the disk layer when the AIO

buffer size is greater than 128KB. This can result in significant performance degradation.

details.

Pinned files can be leaked when using AIO fastpath for CIO

When using AIO fastpath for CIO, pinned files used for read operations can be leaked. The

pinned memory in the kernel heap can increase gradually and the system may eventually run out

of pinned memory.

AIX may page out computational pages by mistake in some rare instances

When real memory is exhausted on a Power5+ or Power6 machine with the 64-bit kernel, AIX

page replacement may page out computational 64K pages instead of non-computational file

cache pages in some rare cases. This can lead to an increase in paging space consumption even

when there is sufficient file cache available for page replacement.

The solution for all of the 3 problems is: Users running Oracle Application Server Release 10g (9.0.4.0.0) on AIX 5L V5.3 should request the

IBM PTFs for both APAR IY66513 and IY70159. If the formal PTFs are not available, customers

should request an iFix containing the fixes for both APARs from IBM support. The previously documented workaround is no longer required but is included below in Appendix A to

help identify any occurrences of the original problem. See also MetaLink Note 339916.1 for patching

9.0.4.X on ML03.

Extra processes may be spawned after installation has completed and system may exhibit insufficient memory behavior

Problem Description: After the application server has been installed and started, running the command: ”ps | wc -l” at regular intervals will show a steady increment in the number of processes as invalid processes are created. Perform the following steps to resolve: See MetaLink Note: 298175.1 for information about other similar problems requiring the following solution. Solution: Shutdown all application processes using the following commands:

Long User Names

AIX 5.3 introduces support of user names up to a length of 256 bytes. However, Oracle usernames must not

exceed 30 bytes in order to guarantee uniqueness within Oracle.

Oracle User ID length

For Oracle RAC installations, the UID for the Oracle user must be less than 65536.

Dbconsole may not start after OEM install

The ”dbconsole” may not start after doing an install through the Oracle Enterprise Manager

(OEM) and selecting a database.

The solution is to:

Edit the file: ${ORACLE_HOME}/_${ORACLE_SID}/sysman/config/emd.properties

Locate the entry where the EMD_URL is set.

This entry should have the format: EMD_URL=http://:%EM_SERVLET_PORT%/emd/main

If you see the string: %EM_SERVLET_PORT% in the entry, then replace the complete string

with an unused port number that is not defined in the "/etc/services" file. If this string is missing

and no port number is in its place, then insert an unused port number that is not defined in the

"/etc/services" file in between the "http://:" and the "/emd/main" strings.

Use the command “emctl start dbconsole” to start the dbconsole after making this change.

For example: EMD_URL=http://myhostname.us.oracle.com:5505/emd/main

Stack Execution Disable option

Oracle users running on AIX 5.3 TL03 or higher may encounter problems if the new Stack Execution Disable

(SED) option is enabled. AIX 5.3 TL3, introduced a new feature called "Stack Execution Disable" or SED. This prevents buffer overflow attacks, by disabling any data to be executed as code. Performance Degradation when AIO buffer size is greater than 128KB

Asynchronous IO (AIO) fastpath can trigger lock contention in the disk layer when the AIO

buffer size is greater than 128KB. This can result in significant performance degradation.

Pinned files can be leaked when using AIO fastpath for CIO

When using AIO fastpath for CIO, pinned files used for read operations can be leaked. The

pinned memory in the kernel heap can increase gradually and the system may eventually run out

IY75901 must be installed to correct a regression introduced in the PTF

Important fixes or issues not specific to an AIX release:

For Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.1 or higher)

Bug 9457492: ASM diskgroup dismounted on all nodes

If a storage connection to a diskgroup is lost for one node in an ASM cluster, the diskgroup may be

dismounted from all nodes in the cluster. This can happen even when there is available connectivity

from all the other nodes, that is, the lost connection was just local to one host in the ASM cluster.

Workaround: Manually mount the diskgroup in ASM instances where there is uninterrupted storage

connectivity still available.


Bug 6782569: 11g Install AIX VIPS do not start.

This fix is required when using the IBM Logical Host Ethernet Adapter (LHEA) for the Oracle RAC

Public or VIP interfaces.


Using medium or large pages in 10.2.0.4 The fix for bug 7226548 is necessary for large (16MB) pages and for medium (64KB) pages to

work correctly on Oracle RAC 10.2.0.4. The information that patch 7226548 is necessary for

medium pages to work correctly is left out of the bug documentation.

Bug 8725020: VIP WONT RUN (LHEA) ADAPTER

The entstat output for the logical Host Ethernet Adapter (LHEA) is different from a regular adapter.

The racgvip script uses entstat ouput to determine if the interface is up or not. See MetaLink Note

959746.1 for details.

Bug 6608472: RACGVIP IN RAC FOR AIX FAILS EVEN THOUGH THE PUBLIC INTERFACE IS UP

This fix is required when using the IBM Logical Host Ethernet Adapter (LHEA) for the Oracle RAC

Public or VIP interfaces. See MetaLink Note 567286.1 for details.

Bug 5005135 and Note 358365.1: Possible Corruption in the OCR after installing 10.2.0.1 on AIX.

The fix is recommended for all Oracle 10.2.0.1 RAC customers. The error messages are documented in

MetaLink note 358365.1. Note: If this patch is installed then the PTF for APAR IY73570: " Aug 2005 IBM C++ Runtime Environment for AIX" or higher, must also be installed.








Bug 4455512: Oracle Database 10gR2 patch for slow Oracle instance startup when using Oracle ASM.

This is only required if using the ASM feature of Oracle Database 10gR2.

Bug 4635088: Oracle Database 10gR2 PARALLEL LOAD HANGS DURING LOAD CREATE TABLE AS SELECT FROM EXTERNAL TABLE

All Oracle Database 10gR2 RAC customers should install this fix since it also contains other important RAC

fixes.

Bug 4437469: RACGVIP NOT WORKING ON SERVER WITH ETHERNET VIRTUALISATION

This is only required if using AIX Virtual Interfaces for the Oracle Database 10.2.0.1 RAC public network.

Oracle cluster interconnect may not be correctly defined after the Oracle CRS install

After CRS installation is completed, verify that the public and cluster interconnect have been set to the

desired values by entering the following commands as root: Note: oifcfg is found in the /bin/oifcfg

$ oifcfg getif

This command should return values for global ”public” and global ”cluster_interconnect”; for

example:

en0 144.25.68.0 global public en5 192.168.100.0 global cluster_interconnect

If the command does not return a value for global cluster_interconnect, enter the

following commands: # oifcfg delif -global # oifcfg setif -global /:public # oifcfg setif â�“global /:cluster_interconnect

For example:

# oifcfg delif -global # oifcfg setif -global en0/144.25.68.0:public # oifcfg setif -global en5/192.168.100.0:cluster_interconnect

Enter the following command to verify the new settings:

# oifcfg getif




Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) for Oracle Database 10g Release 1 CRS will not display more than 3 network interfaces. This issue only applies to 10gR1 (10.1.0.2 and following)

Problem: if you install Oracle Database 10g on a system with more than 3 network interfaces, not all

of the interfaces are displayed in the menu used to select the public and private interconnect. If the 3

interfaces displayed include all the ones that you are planning to use, proceed with the normal OUI

configuration. If the 3 interface displayed do not include all the desired interfaces, use the following

workaround:

Select the most appropriate public and private interconnect from the 3 interfaces which

are listed in the menu.

Complete the installation.

After the installation, change the interconnects by entering the following commands as

root: Note: oifcfg is found in the /bin/oifcfg

If the command does not return a value for global cluster_interconnect, enter the

following commands:

# oifcfg delif -global # oifcfg setif -global /:public # oifcfg setif â�“global /:cluster_interconnect

For Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1.0.4 only) RAC All Oracle 10.1.0.4 RAC customers should install the Oracle patches for bugs 4332858 and 4277281. All Oracle 10.1.0.4 RAC customers using GPFS should also install the Oracle patch for bug 4487491.

Bug 4437469: RACGVIP NOT WORKING ON SERVER WITH ETHERNET

VIRTUALISATION

This is only required if using AIX Virtual Interfaces for the Oracle 10.1.0.4 RAC public network.





For Oracle9i Database Rel 2 (9.2.0.4)

Oracle Bug 3284426: Oracle 9.2.0.4 customers using jfs2 must install this patch to avoid severe

performance degradation.

Note: This was previously listed in this document as Oracle Bug 3224502: ”IDENTIFYING A

JFS2 FILE SYSTEM TYPE AS A MMFS” however, using the 3284426 bug number will make

the patch easier to find.


Oracle Bug 3393861: "GSD does not start on AIX 5L" In a non RAC environment, OPATCH may fail indicating missing AIX libraries.

The installation of the Oracle 9.2.0.5 patch (bug 2997330) using the OPATCH utility may fail in a non RAC

environment with error messages indicating missing RAC related libraries such as: " ha_gs_64_r and ha_em_r " In a non RAC environment, these libraries are not needed. Proceed with the following steps to resolve this problem by recreating the correct executable: Using your oracle user id: " cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib " and then issue the following commands â�œ make -f ins_rdbms.mk rac_off â�œ â�œ make -f ins_rdbms.mk ioracle â�œ

SQL*PLUS command will show a default value of "async" for the â�œfilesystemio_optionsâ��

parameter instead of the correct "asynch" value

After installing patchset 9.2.0.5, the v$parameter view and the `show parameter

filesystemio_options` SQL*PLUS command will show a default value of "async" for

filesystemio_options parameter instead of the correct "asynch" value. This will not affect the

behavior of your database, which will correctly use asynchronous I/O by default, even though the

view and command show the incorrect value.

When setting the ”filesystemio_options” parameter in the init.ora file, continue to use the

documented values, not "async".


Customers upgrading to 9.2.0.6 should prepare to immediately address the following 2 issues.





MetaLink Note 294658.1: Wrong Platform ID during patch application after applying the 9.2.0.6

patchset. Oracle OPatch will fail when attempting to apply any additional patches after the 9.2.0.6 upgrade.

MetaLink Note 294658.1 provides the manual instructions to fix this problem. NOTE: This fix must

be implemented before any additional patches can be applied.

Oracle Bug 4081980: AFTER APPLYING THE 9206 PATCHSET YOU CAN NO LONGER

CREATE A DATABASE

The ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/prvtfile.plb becomes 0 bytes after the 9.2.0.6 upgrade. The

patch for bug 4081980 will restore the prvtfile.plb file.

Oracle9i Database RAC users may also want to apply the fix for the following issue.

Oracle Bug 4074633: AIX5L - Higher CPU usage in RAC background processes in 9.2.0.6

For Oracle Applications 11i Rel (11.5.x) and 11.0.x

All Oracle Application users with Oracle Forms 6i (6.0.8.x.y) or 4.5 (4.5.10.22) should apply the following Oracle Forms patch.

The problem will most likely be seen after applying Maintenance Level 3 (ML03) for AIX 5L V5.3

but can also occur on any AIX 5L version and maintenance level. When a form is obtaining a long ”list of values”, the operation may fail and the following two Oracle

Forms error messages will be displayed. FRM-40815 : Variable GLOBAL.LLL10 does not exist FRM-40502 : Oracle error : unable to read list of values.

The current Oracle bugs associated with this problem are as follows; be sure to specify your Oracle

Forms version to obtain the correct patch: Bug 4670400: This is the main bug for the above problem. Patch for this bug is

for Forms version 6.0.8.25.x (Patch 16) only.

Bug 4689213: Backport for Forms 6.0.8.24.x (Patch 15)

Bug 4689364: Backport for Forms 6.0.8.26.x (Patch 17)

Bug 4950777: Backport for Forms 4.5.10.22 (with Oracle Applications 11.0.x)

Only 32 bit JDK should be used for Oracle Applications 11i or 11.0.x.

When performing the RapidWiz installation for Oracle Applications 11i Rel (11.5.x) or 11.0.x, the

user should only enter the path for the supported 32 bit JDK. Example: ”usr/java131/”. 64 bit JDK

may be installed for use by other products but can not be used for Oracle Applications.

Important information regarding IBM products used with Oracle

Customers using the IBM FlashCopy feature should refer to MetaLink note 300225.1 for updated information.

For customers who link their Oracle Database 10g Release 1 or Oracle9i Database user applications with libocci.a and have upgraded to the ”IBM XL C/C++ Enterprise Edition V7.0” runtime environment.

In this environment, some C++ string operations (For example: ”operator+”) will not work

properly.

The work around is to make sure that ”libC.a” precedes ”libocci.a” in your user application link

line by changing the "-locci" to "-lC -locci" at the link line. See the following example:

A sample application ”mytest.cpp” requires libocci.a at link time in order to resolve few

symbols. The typical compile and link line may look like: $ xlC mytest.cpp -locci

To work around the problem, change the compile/link line to: $ xlC mytest.cpp -lC -locci

Note: The following commands can be used to check the current version of the C/C++ runtime

environment: $ lslpp -l | grep xlC.rte xlC.rte 7.0.0.1 COMMITTED C Set ++ Runtime $ lslpp -l | | grep xlC.aix50.rte xlC.aix50.rte 7.0.0.3 COMMITTED C Set ++ Runtime for AIX 5.0
