AROUND THE END of the 19th Century La Rocque Inn was situated on the sea side of the East coast road opposite the current Seymour Inn. Initially this was called Mary Jane’s, after the matronly landlady Mary Jane Le Vesconte. As well as being a public house, Mary Jane’s was a grocery store, with a small tearoom attached. It was very popular with farm workers, fishermen and the vraicers, but had rather a reputation and dubious opening hours. It is believed that in the 1930’s the public house moved across the road into larger premises, to a house then called Seymour Place, and became the Seymour Inn. The Seymour Inn has remained open through some turbulent times during Jersey’s history. This picture shows the occupying forces outside the Seymour Inn around 1943. STILL A TRADITIONAL PUB The Seymour’s customers tell us they love the Seymour because it still retains the look, feel and atmosphere of an old traditional pub and is welcoming to locals and visitors alike.
