Q. Do you need fixed income with no market risk in a time oflow CD rates and severe stock market instability?

A. A charitable gift annuity may be your answer.

Here’s how it works … You transfer funds (cash, bonds, stock, mutual funds, etc.)to KWC in exchange for fixed lifetime income payments. The rate of paymentdoes not change with the stock market, interest rates or inflation - it remains fixedfor the rest of your life. Your age determines the rate.

Current ratesAGE RATE60 5.7%65 6.0%70 6.5%75 7.1%80 8.0%85 9.5%90 11.3%

Rates are slightly less for a two-life annuity.

And now, Diane Earle has been invited to give a solo performance atCarnegie Hall, one of the premier concert halls in the world. March 21,2005. Mark that date!

She will play compositions by Dr. John Steffa, a Murray State Universitymusic professor. Her solo performance will include Steffa’s “Tangents” and“Three Pieces for Piano.” She will also play a suite for viola and piano onthe same program with a viola player from MSU.

“I am absolutely thrilled about this incredible and very rare opportuni-ty,” said Earle. “Carnegie Hall is one of the most important musical meccas in the world, and the thought of playing in those hallowed halls isawe-inspiring and a musician’s dream.”

It seems a natural progression for the talented Earle. From the momenther parents purchased a piano and she began lessons at the age of six, herpassion continues to be playing and teaching music.

While attending college at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (bachelor of music magna cum laude), Ohio StateUniversity (master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees in pianoperformance and literature) and the Eastman School of Music (additionaldoctoral study), Earle not only studied piano, but also voice, organ, harpsi-chord, accompanying and chamber music.

According to Beth Roop Stovall ’84, Earle’s former student and currentdirector of KW Singers, Earle’s willingness to expand beyond playing andteaching enables her to be a “fabulous and talented accompanist.” Stovallsaid Earle’s foundation gives her the knowledge needed to ascertain asoloist or choir’s requirements and to adapt as needed to create the bestoverall performance.

In spite of over 3,500 musical performances, Earle continues to seekprofessional development through private study. Even with her talent andexperience, she practices her craft an average of five hours daily in order tomaintain her skill level.

Whether Earle is performing or teaching a first time piano student likeKWC junior Lauren Mayhew, her lively personality extends to everyonearound her. Mayhew said, “She’s always encouraging…bright and cheerfuland that really puts me at ease.”

KWC Professor of Art Bill Kolok said, “Her work is temporal, and sheworks harder in the process of creation. She gets the applause and needsthe audience.”

Earle’s involvement in the community ranges from a soloist, musical col-laborator and presenter with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra (OSO)to the creation of the “Go for Baroque” public education program spon-sored by the Kentucky Arts Council. The program enhances the learningprocess of students in the city, county and Catholic school systems. Earlealso instructs the “Arts in the A.M.” educational program at the RiverParkCenter.

Maestro Nicholas Palmer, music director and conductor of the OSO,said, “Diane’s experience makes her easy to work with in the process ofconducting. KWC is fortunate to have a wonderful piano teacher, musicteacher and staff member as talented as Diane.” He continued, “Whenteaching children, Diane makes music fun…and really engages the stu-dents.”

In addition she records CDs, teaches 25 community students, serves asdirector of the 150-voice Owensboro Civic Chorus and serves as an organ-ist at Third Baptist Church. Earle’s community participation gives her theopportunity to recruit for KWC, plus “I feel very needed in the communi-ty, which is why I stay here,” said Earle.

While Kentucky Wesleyan reflects upon Earle’s 21 years at the college, her colleagues say her achievements reflect her intelligence, her workbeyond the call of duty, her ease of teaching students of all ages and hergreat sense of humor.

Earle loves her role as a musical ambassador and “wants people to expe-rience the joy of music.”

But first there’s Carnegie Hall. Earle is preparing for the performance ofa lifetime and we at Kentucky Wesleyan applaud her success. Join us onMarch 21, 2005, at 8:00 p.m. ET in New York City in the Weill RecitalHall in Carnegie Hall as we celebrate the talent and extraordinary accom-plishments of Dr. Diane Earle. Mark that date!

It would seem there is an inherent love of Kentucky WesleyanCollege in some families and that is certainly reflected in 22 of thenewest “legacy” students on campus.

Freshman Ashley Theissen continued in the tradition set by hermother, Sue Ward Theissen ’78, and three of her mother’s siblings,Scott Ward ’74, Paul “Denny” Ward ’77 and Nancy WardCastlen ’80.

“Mom didn’t push me to come to Kentucky Wesleyan. My auntsand uncles tried to convince me more than she did,” Ashley said. “Igrew up in the greater Cincinnati area and I’ve been visitingOwensboro once a month since I was a baby,” she continued.

“My cousin told me to take a tour of KWC and I really liked it.”Plus the college offered her a great scholarship – Theissen is aBrown Scholar.

She said, “In the beginning of my search, I didn’t appreciatesomething I was always used to. Kentucky Wesleyan is now a homeaway from home.” Theissen lives on campus in Peeples Hall.

She has a double major – history and art – and wants to go tolaw school. “I might want to go into politics or international lawand travel and see the world. But sometimes I just want to be anartist – so I go back and forth.”

Like Ashley, freshman Cortney Snyder is a long way from home, but lives with her great uncle, John Snyder ’59. She also has agreat aunt nearby, Martha Snyder ’68.

“I was born and raised in Las Vegas, so Owensboro was a big cul-ture shock. It’s greener here and there are furry woodland creatures, and red leaves. In Las Vegas it’s hot, hot and a little less hot, so Idon’t own a coat, I’ve never seen snow, bugs are a new thing, andwashing cars in the driveway is legal,” Snyder said.

“In the fourth grade I decided to be an orthodontist and in theseventh grade I decided to come to KWC,” Snyder explained. “Mygrandparents, Anna and Horace Snyder ’60, brought me toKentucky Wesleyan and said, ‘This is where we met.’”

Snyder said, “At Kentucky Wesleyan, I’m not another number –everyone wants to help. It’s quite welcoming.” Snyder also playssoftball. Although her grandparents are now deceased, she thinks

they approve of her college choice.Ian Miller is a freshman from Shelbyville, Ind. His father, Rick

Miller ’82, is a Methodist minister and the family moved seventimes in 18 years.

“My father had been telling me to come here since I was four-years old, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to come until my sopho-more year and I moved from a high school of 500 to one with2,500. I decided I didn’t want to go to a state school with 20,000students,” Miller said.

“The biggest challenge is having to do everything yourself andI’m running out of clean clothes,” Miller continued. “I haven’tdeclared a major yet, but I’m a work study student for the academicdean, I live in Deacon, pledged Sigma Alpha Mu and I love it.”

Although this is her first year at Kentucky Wesleyan, RachelVanderford, also known as “Rocky,” is not a traditional student. She attended Lexington Community College right out of highschool, worked two years and then attended Paducah CommunityCollege.

She started looking at Kentucky Wesleyan last fall she said, “afterswearing I would never come here because of my sisters, HeatherVanderford Matics ’92 and Maribeth Vanderford ’96. But I fig-ured I had waited long enough. It has worked to my advantagebecause the professors are taking good care of me.”

She didn’t get a lot of pressure from her sisters. “They encour-aged me and they were excited about me attending,” she said.

“It was a big adjustment. I was a commuter student with nosocial life in Paducah. Now I live in Peeples Hall and we have aclose network of friends. I enjoy my classes and I’m learning a lot,”Vanderford continued.

She has a double major, English with an emphasis on creativewriting, and fine arts with an emphasis on theatre. “My goal is toget an MFA and teach college students,” she said.

And the Vanderford legacy lives on….Rachel has a 16-year-oldbrother, Jonathan, who wants to come to Kentucky Wesleyan. Itmust be a family tradition!
