  • 2Meeting New Market DemandsIn a modern company, the ability to reach the right information atthe right time is crucial for overall business success. Informationsystems must be available 24/7 from all locations, both local anddistant. Information technology provides the access-on-demandthat provides answers to important business questions. Moderninformation systems must be completely integrated within anorganization, highly available, customizable, expandable andallow for increased user demand. Rapid take up by employeesand ease of maintenance are two other factors that will helpensure an acceptable Total Cost of Ownership.

SAP AG is the world's leading provider of e-business software.By implementing SAP solutions on Microsoft WindowsAdvanced Server Limited Edition version 1.2, corporations canmake major improvements in their information handling require-ments, ensuring increased global competitiveness.

The SAP R/3 software solution, already prepared for 64-bitoperating systems and hardware since 1993, is an integratedsystem, where all functionality to run an enterprise is providedby one system. SAP R/3 offers transaction and reporting func-tionality in the areas of financial accounting, sales and distribu-tion, materials management, quality management, productionplanning, plant maintenance, and many others.

This complete 64-bit solution provides increased performance, more memory and additional resources when paired withMicrosofts newest generation of Windows Advanced ServerLimited Edition version 1.2 and HP servers based on the sec-ond-generation Itanium processor.

The Business ChallengeInformation systems must handle a rapidly growing number ofconcurrent users at different locations, while preserving goodperformance, and without becoming too complex to run andmaintain. One way of handling such issues in the past was theimplementation of distributed environments, where serviceswere distributed across many computers, in many cases, at dif-ferent geographical locations. With new enabling communica-tion technologies and high bandwidth possibilities, ApplicationService Providing and centralization are becoming cost-cuttingimperatives.

Other common challenges have to do with existing legacy sys-tems. During years of business, a lot of different informationsystems are implemented in an average enterprise. As a conse-quence, business data and information is usually spread acrossdifferent platforms and applications. That makes operationsslower due to the time needed to get and organize information. On the other hand, costs are increasing, as a result of invest-ments in different platforms. The staff education and compen-sation required to administer, operate and maintain differenthardware, operation system and application architectures alsopose significant costs. Solution architects of SAP solutionsneed to deliver reliable performance to service level agreements(SLAs) while balancing the needs of end users for both businessgrowth and IT cost-efficiencies. Production and delivery envi-ronments, such as those found in extended manufacturingcompanies, demand extensive planning capabilities.

Finally, escalating costs of data center real-estate dictates high-er density servers on the application tier to contain proliferationand improve manageability. The ability to have the completeinformation system infrastructure for the entire company at oneplace, running one operating system and one ERP system suchas SAP R/3 is vital, no matter how large and distributed thebusiness is. Also, users of ERP systems are demanding aneasy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI), similar to thosewhich they already have on their PCs or are available on theWorld Wide Web.

Solving those issues can dramatically improve company-widebusiness efficiency and system administration with one oper-ation system kernel throughout all platforms, from client desk-top to 64-bit server architecture, TCO can be reduced signifi-cantly, without any performance cutbacks.

  • The solution overview SAP R/3 and its components excel at integrating and improvingbusiness practices. For businesses of most any size and indus-try, SAP R/3 offers a compelling combination of functionality, flex-ibility, and technology, enabling companies to respond quickly tochange. Faster response means customers will have more timeto concentrate on strategically growing their core competencies.

SAP R/3 overcomes the limitations of traditional hierarchicaland function-oriented structures common in other software.Sales and materials planning, production planning, warehousemanagement, financial accounting, and human resources man-agement are all integrated into a workflow of business eventsand processes across departments and functional areas.Employees receive the right information and documents at theright time to their desktops. SAP R/3 spans organizational andgeographical boundaries for corporate headquarters, manufac-turing plants, sales offices, and subsidiaries all merge for integrated handling of business processes.

Targeted at enterprise and high-performance computing, thenewly developed Intel Itanium processor family enables a broadchoice of platforms and applications for 64-bit servers andworkstations at significantly lower costs than proprietary offer-ings, while providing exceptional performance, scalability andreliability. The Intel Itanium processor family offers theprice/performance advantages of industry standard compo-nents while providing the degree of scalability and range ofarchitectural features necessary within the high-performancemarket.

The just introduced HP server rx2600 and HP server rx5670powered by Itanium 2 processors provide a compelling 64-bitplatform for SAP solutions on the Windows Server operatingsystem. This provides for larger memory, increased processingpower and expanded I/O capacity, providing additional powerto SAP applications. Where both 32-bit and 64-bit SAP kernelsare available on an operating system platform for a particularcomponent of the mySAP.com e-Business platform, users cannow achieve a complete 64-bit solution.

Technology This complete 64-bit solution represents a new generation ofsoftware rewritten for 64-bit platforms. This is the convergenceof several new technologies designed for each other which nowwork together as reliably as their 32-bit predecessors:

HP server rx2600 powered by 1-2 Intel

    Itanium 2 processors

HP server rx5670 powered by 2-4 Intel

    Itanium 2 processors

    64-bit SAP R/3

64-Bit Windows Advanced Server, LimitedEdition version 1.2

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition64-bit database

    64-bit software:

Currently, all SAP solutions support 64-bitsystems. As demand for these systems hasincreased, the answer to the demand is theavailability of the 64-bit version of MicrosoftWindows Advanced Server Limited Edition. The new technology opens up many opportu-nities for SAP solutions, specifically the simplification of SAP R/3 customization and

configuration. By running SAP R/3 on 64-bit systems, cus-tomers can expect a high level of reliability, high availability, highperformance and lower TCO. Specifically, new solutions, suchas mySAP Supply Chain Management (mySAP SCM) with theSAP Advanced Planner and Optimizer (SAP APO) componentwith liveCache an in-memory database and comprehensivebusiness intelligence solutions, will really benefit from 64-bitsupport.

Microsoft Windows Advanced Server, Limited Editionversion 1.2

Windows Advanced Server Limited Edition version 1.2 will allowfor the following Windows 64-bit features:

Load-balancing enhancements allowing for more reliablenetwork load balancing

IIS 6 Lock-down setup policy is more secure

IIS 6 Kernel mode caching increases overall performance

IIS 6 Process handling model improved to further increasereliability

Clustering reboots managed for non-stop operation

8 node cluster support brings more flexibility and reliability

Support for accessing up to 16 Terabytes of virtual memory

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition 64-bit:

To complement 64-bit Windows, Microsoft is releasing its 64-bit version of the industrys de-facto standard SQL Server data-base. Ease of use remains excellent with a completely consistent

    3

  • user interface from the previous 32-bit version, but perform-ance, capacity and reliability are all enhanced:

Extended thresholds that surpass maximums of previous32-bit versions

    More concurrent sessions allowed

    Query performance improved

Support for in memory database and large data ware-houses

    2nd Generation 64-bit Hardware:

    Industry Standard Technologies

The Intel Itanium processor family is the industry standard tech-nology of the future. The technology is based upon ExplicitlyParallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) providing the growth inprocessor performance needed to meet the application per-formance needs of the future. HP rx2600 and HP rx5670Itanium 2 servers are hardware enhanced for maximum per-formance and memory scalability due to the special HP zx1chipset. For the latest information on HP Itanium-based plat-forms, visit www.hp.com/go/itanium.

    Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing

EPIC is designed to parallelize the instructions within eachclock cycle. This is accomplished using software compilers thatdecide which instructions can be processed in parallel. SAP R/3will take advantage of this feature allowing it to process moreinstructions per clock cycle, therefore improving the perform-ance of the SAP application.

The HP rx2600 and HP rx5670 servers are second-generationItanium servers utilizing the HP developed zx1 chipset to providesubstantially better application performance. The rx2600 is a 2-way capable server and the rx5670 is a 4-way capable server.

    HP Performance Enhancements:

The HP zx1, a special hardware enhancement unique to HPItanium 2 servers, provides better price/performance than com-petitors due to its low latency, high bandwidth and low costdesign. The HP zx1 memory subsystem is also more flexiblethan any other technology available. When combined, theseattributes mean substantially better application performance.

Target Market This solution can be implemented in almost any business envi-ronment, almost regardless of industry manufacturing, retail, distribution, telecom, finance, government, non-profit or anyother. The market opportunity for SAP solutions continues togrow in terms of both markets served, as well as in the depthand breadth of the SAP offering. Today the majority of newlyinstalled SAP solutions are on a Windows platform. For globalenterprises, SAP R/3 has historically been deployed in hetero-geneous three-tier configurations in order to meet the price-performance and reliability requirements of customers. In theseenvironments, Windows has been the platform of choice on theapplication tier.

From a management perspective, there are two main areas thatwill benefit from a 64-bit SAP R/3 implementation. The first areais future growth this solution can improve application integra-tion issues, and create a secure growth path within a very shortimplementation period. The second area is user friendliness: theuser community adoption time frame is very small, becausethere is no change to the look and feel of their usual Officeapplications. Both of these reasons lower operation costs, increase resource productivity and boost profits.

From a system administrators perspective, this solution is pre-ferred, because they already administer Windows 32-bit basedplatforms and already have most of the necessary skills toadminister Windows 64-bit architecture. This solution seam-lessly integrates with existing systems. Administration of sever-al different computer architectures and operation systems with-in one organization will not be needed, and that can have amajor impact on total system availability, reliability and security.

This solution is most applicable to the installed base ofWindows customers who are looking to achieve increased busi-ness performance for mission critical SAP R/3 solutions whileminimizing the risk to their existing business systems. Thesecustomers will especially benefit from the Itanium technologyfor greater native memory allocation possibilities, improvedcomputational and transaction processing while minimizing dis-ruption to their existing SAP environment. Itanium 2 systemscan begin to be used in parallel with existing IA32 systems, eas-ing migration with immediate returns in productivity gains fromrelatively minor investments and with minimum risk.

Customers whose databases have grown rapidly in size willwant the larger memory buffers, as well as the performanceneeded to manage these buffers. A new type of database isalso emerging, the in-memory database (IMDB), which takes amore direct approach to the use of large quantities of physicalmemory by optimizing for main-memory data managementrather than disk-based management.

Mission critical database applications will also benefit fromadvanced reliability features in the Intel Itanium processor fam-ily that detect errors and minimize the scope of their effects.

  • Case studies / Proof pointsVTG-Lehnkering AG*, a leading logistics company based inHamburg, Germany, has moved seamlessly to a high-perform-ance future-proof 64-bit platform capable of handling its exist-ing logistics applications. VTG-Lehnkering is using themySAP.com e-Business platform and Microsoft SQL Server2000 Enterprise Edition 64-bit application running on twoProliant* DL590 Itanium based servers for the SAP R/3-baseddatabase and central unit. They are using SAP R/3 Financials(FI), Enterprise Consolidation (EC-CS), Controlling (CO) andProfitability Analysis (CO-PA) applications.

ECS AG, a system integrator based in Hamburg, has success-fully implemented this mySAP.com production installation basedon the Windows 64-bit platform running on Intel Itanium basedservers for VTG-Lehnkering, one of their major clients. The solu-tion deployed was a completely 64-bit based solution andachieved the following success factors:

Completely eliminated previous issues with memory allo-cations above 2-3 GB RAM by increasing allocations to 4 GB RAM

Scalable to a load up greater than existing systems

32-bit and 64-bit databases were combined with oneanother for high availability SQL Server

Logistical applications could migrate to Windows 64-bitplatform running on Intel-based servers

System resources could be displayed for the whole loadarea

Significant cost savings were achieved through simplermaintenance and familiar Windows-based format

In the future, another eight nodes in a fail over cluster canbe added, increasing potential scalability. Operation andmaintenance will also be more flexible, and system avail-ability will improve as well.

The challenge for the IT departments was to make the softwareavailable by January 1st, 2002. In January 2002, the systemwent into production on Intels 32-bit server architecture. Justtwo months later, VTG-Lehnkering switched to a full Itaniumprocessor production environment on ProLiant DL 590 fourprocessor servers. By the end of February, the systems wereproven and comprehensive tests showed there were no obsta-cles in switching to production mode. During March 2002, theproduction system for VTG-Lehnkering was switched from 32-bit to 64-bit.

Overall the solution implemented provides feature and function-ality equal to that implemented on a 32-bit platform. In addition,64-bit technology has given added performance benefits, withlittle or no extra administration training required for systemadministrators.

VTG-Lehnkering is confident in opting for an Intel-based plat-form with its scalability and future-proof architecture.

    5

The Intel 64-bit processors arethe basis for the next generationof industry servers. We arebeginning to see IA32 projectswith large software applicationsthat are already reaching thelimits of conventional serverarchitectures. The solution has

also given VTG-Lehnkering an edge over the competitionby implementing Microsoft SQL Server 2000 EnterpriseEdition 64-bit on an Intel Itanium processor-basedmachine, and we were able to get the memory address-ability we needed to run our mySAP.com applicationsmore efficiently. Were confident about the extendedcompetitive advantage that Itanium processors promiseto deliver as our platforms develop over time.

Roman Mielinski, IT Director, VTG-Lehnkering AG

Some of our customers arereaching the natural thresholdsof the 32-bit address space. These limitations of memorymanagement and file systemscan be enhanced by advancingall components to 64-bit, fromhardware and operating system

to database and application servers. In the project atVTG-Lehnkering, we realized a full 64-bit-based SAP solution.

SAP customers that want to move system performance to thenext generation, especially those with Sales and Distribution,Production Planning and Materials Management applications, can improve productivity with SAP R/3 running on HPs Itanium2-based servers.

Functional Business ConceptmySAP.com provides a comprehensive set of solutions for running almost any kind of business. SAP R/3 is an importantcomponent of the mySAP.com e-Business platform throughwhich many interactions must pass. It is critical to a businessthat SAP R/3 be as fast and reliable as possible.

    SAP R/3 Product Overview

    7

  • The various mySAP applications that make up the mySAP.come-Business platform map onto an organizations businessprocesses. All applications are closely integrated with eachother for providing users immediate access to shared data, real-time management of online information, and the ability todynamically respond to shifts in the business.

SAP R/3 as part of the mySAP.com e-Business platform has theability to completely integrate all of the functions of a business, organization, utility or manufacturer. The following diagram pro-vides a good example of the integration of the business processin the Sales and Distribution (SD) application of SAP R/3 as anexample.

During the Sales and Distribution business function, an orderenters into sales support, and as the order is processed throughthe system, it crosses a number of other business processesuntil it is invoiced. Once invoiced, the Financial Accounting (FI)application takes over to help ensure proper payment and distribution of revenue to the appropriate locations. Also shownis how the SD application triggers the Materials Management(MM) application, which manages warehouses and helpsensure that proper levels of inventory are maintained.

    User experience

    Familiar Look and Feel

SAP R/3 has different user interfaces for users, operators andadministrators. In each case the user interface is optimized forease of use through years of evolution from customer feedback. The user interface allows for optimal access to all of the func-tions, and can be customized for any specific implementation.

As customers implement newer versions of SAP R/3, the inter-faces remain identical. When upgrading to the 64-bit version ofSAP R/3 there are no user interface changes anywhere in thesystem.

Windows 64-bit desktop, SQL Server 64-bit and SAP solutionmanagement consoles look exactly the same as in the 32-bitversion. This enables administrators to seamlessly switch to anew platform quickly and easily.

The SQL Server Enterprise Manager Console 64-bit offers allthe functionality available in SQL Server 2000, meaning that theintegration of a Standby Database on 32-bit SQL Server will notcause any procedural or functional changes. Standby DatabaseFunctions are an integral part of all Microsoft SQL Server 2000Enterprise Edition 64-bit and are compatible from todays ver-sions down to SQL Server 6.5.

    8

  • Software Architecture

    Software overview

The R/3 architecture is based on a software-ori-ented multi-tier client/server principle. This archi-tecture supports both centralized configurationsand highly distributed systems with numerousdedicated servers. The application system pro-vides presentation services, application servicesand database services. These services are sup-plemented by several special services, for exam-ple, communication and printing. The main appli-cation services could be tailored in different ways, but we consider two approaches: central R/3configuration and client/server R/3 configuration. The terms are classified as:

Central System Database and ApplicationServices running on one single computer

Client/Server System Database services arerunning on a dedicated computer. Middle-tierapplication services run on one or several servers. The end-user presentation is always on separatedfront-end computers, such as a PC or workstation.

The large scale and scope of high transaction throughput ofmany LOB (Line Of Business) applications such as SAP R/3,underlies the applications ability to benefit from the large mem-ory support and transaction processing performance of archi-tecture such as Itanium. Itaniums instruction pipelining andlarge register set also allow for more efficient processing ofstructured integer data.

    Shared Memory Requirement

With 64-bit technology, more real memory can be used whilelow-level memory operations are accelerated, resulting inimproved performance. Also, the speed of memory mappeddisk accesses, caching, and swapping increases with 64-bittechnology. With the availability of larger memory, a bigger per-centage of the database can be cached in main memory, pro-viding greater performance over a 32-bit server running SAPR/3 applications.

System Architecture SAP systems need to be prepared for greater capacity andfuture growth.

The scenario outlined here, and similar to the VTG CustomerScenario, shows how to immediately add capacity to an exist-ing environment, improve performance and prepare for almostunlimited future expansion.

    Designing for the Future:

The HP Intel Solution Center or any system integrator can perform system tests and benchmarks to clearly understandperformance expectations and capacity sizing needs. Systemsare identified that will reduce maintenance, improve perform-ance and consolidate existing servers.

The high density and high capacity of the HP rx2600 andrx5670 servers allow for the consolidation of SAP applicationservers, reducing the total number of servers. Many SAP solu-tion-based landscapes can be significant in the proliferation ofservers. The reduction of physical servers will reduce systemmanagement overhead and allow for better management ofassets. It will also decrease the floor space required to supportthe SAP solution environment providing savings in facilitiesmanagement. This will reduce the total cost of ownership byreducing overhead costs.

    9
